Well, the months of rumours, speculation and player wishes have finally come true, as Nintendo has revealed that SNES games are indeed headed to Nintendo Switch.
Just like the NES games already available on the console, this new SNES library will be available exclusively to Nintendo Switch Online members. The games will benefit from special online features such as the Rewind function, and a whopping 20 titles will be available when the new service begins.
Which games, we hear you ask? These beauties:
- Super Mario World
- Super Mario Kart
- The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past
- Super Metroid
- Stunt Race FX (Available for the first time since its original Super NES release)
- Kirby's Dream Land 3
- Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island
- Star Fox
- F-ZERO
- Pilotwings
- Kirby's Dream Course
- BRAWL BROTHERS
- Breath of Fire
- Demon's Crest
- Joe & Mac 2: Lost in the Tropics
- SUPER E.D.F. EARTH DEFENSE FORCE
- Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts
- Super Puyo Puyo 2 (Available for the first time in the U.S.)
- Super Soccer (Available for the first time since its original Super NES release)
- Super Tennis (Available for the first time since its original Super NES release)
Alongside the games, Online members will also have the opportunity to snag this SNES-style controller for $29.99 / £26.99. More details on this will be shared soon.
So, when can you get stuck into all of these SNES games? Well, if the title of this article hasn't already given it away, the games are headed to Switch tomorrow – but only if you're in North America. European players will have to wait until Friday. Oh, and there's no additional cost, either.
Update: To clarify the situation further, we've heard from Nintendo UK that the SNES games will be going live in the UK at midnight (so Friday 6th September at 00:00). In CEST, that's 01:00 on the 6th September.
North American players can expect the games to drop on Thursday 5th as expected.
Enjoy!

Finally some value in the online service
Yay, happy days!
Its about time, and free!
Looks like everyone got their wish... F-Zero at last!
Super Metroid on Switch. 😁
I really hope Earthbound, Chrono Trigger, and FFVI get added to this as well.
Sweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeettttt!!!!
It's about time!
Sweet lord, yes! 20 games to start with - fab. Some off kilter ace ones in there too - Breath of Fire and Demon's Crest are phenomenal.
That SNES controller will SO be mine.
@Jack_Goetz Indeed FINALLY F-Zero on the Switch!
Yes super sweet news!
Yes yes yes,,,
Fzerooooo
Can't wait to get in on some of the games I missed out on.
Breath of Fire!!! Absolutely amazing!! Finally I will get a chance to play it properly, not via an emulator or something like that.
That's pretty awesome. Glad they're not pulling some tiered sub BS. This'll go a long way toward making that $19.99 a year feel worthwhile.
I hope we get Star Fox 2 via this service.
Finally!!! I also need two of those SNES controllers. I wonder if they will sell out. Does anyone know if the NES controllers released last year are still available?
Finally joe and mac 2
Hope they lose the overlay crap that plagues the NES games.
Still not impressed consider I could play these games 10 years ago, however the controllers are quite tempting.
There, fellow fans, now you can start trashtalking the subscription for the absence of N64 games.😜
Seriously, though, quite a package to start with. Even Breath of Fire - I don't recall NES Online launching with JRPGs last year.
Awesome news, finally some games I want to play in the online service. I'm happy.
Totally forgot about the direct but forget Gears 5 im playing Super Mario World hot damn
I have a massive SNES collection but it will be nice for others to enjoy. And the online multiplayer might actually be fun with SNES games. Surprised they never released Duck Hunt for the NES games they could have just replaced the light gun with a joycon... guess it would have took too much work
Finally, it's time to join the fun playing SNES games that I never played before.
I knew it!! I've been saying aaaaages that Nintendo need to roll out it's SNES game catalogue to a decent level in order to refresh, remind, and introduce gamers today of its magnificent gaming history. A few titles here and there on the New 3DS and Wii U was never going to be enough. Hopefully some GBA games next?
Either way, a good strong start for Nintendo in terms of retro games content!
Awesome news and some surprising games such as Demons Crest and Stunt Race FX
@DTfeartheBEARD They are still available.
Great lineup! This is about the best start one can ask for. You already get the three most acclaimed games on the system.
@Ralizah,
The $19.99 was already good value when you consider the individual virtual console Nes games prices, now it's just more value with the Snes games.
About time!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm glad. Can't wait for more.
Maybe they're starting to listen to their customers. I gotta say the number and the quality of almost all games in the list impressed me
Super Tennis is one of my favourite SNES games ever...now I have it again. Looking forward to getting back into these games!
I can’t believe it! Stunt Race FX!!!!
Star Fox
Super Metroid
Good stuff. Finally
And there was much rejoicing!
Demon's Crest!! One of my favorite games ever, can't wait to play it again.
@johnvboy That's only if you actually want to play most of the NES games on offer, which most of us don't. Although my issue is that the way the buttons are mapped makes the games a bit of a pain to play in handheld mode, and no option for remapping is offered.
Thankfully, the face button layout on SNES is identical to the way they're laid out on Switch, so they should control fine.
What are the odds I just got my 8bitdo sn30 pro controller last week!
@BlackenedHalo Breath of Fire!!! Absolutely amazing!! Finally I will get a chance to play it properly, not via an emulator or something like that.[
Uh, I have some bad news. On the Switch, it will be running on an emulator.
I'm excited for this but I'm still holding out for Faxanadu on the NES Online...
@607jf,
That's the whole point of retro games fella, if you couldn't play them in the past they would not be retro games, out of interest what more do you want from a $1.58 a month service.
I am so excited to play PilotWings lol... all these amazing new games and I want this
Groovy, some wonderful SNES titles with an emulator' QoL features like rewind & quicksaves. But what's worrying me more is that it took a full year to bring another console to an Online Services. What about N64 and GameCube? In 2020 and 2021?
Wicked, I know this opinion won't be shared but I was kinda hoping the SNES controllers would be joy cons like the NES controllers but oh well! Not that I could work out how they'd slide on with the big L and R buttons. I think they'd be more unique and possibly useless like that but I would love them even more for it!
I didnt expect 20! I didnt expect the amazing Demons Crest either.
At the very best I thought Mario World, Link to the Past and then something "meh" like Super Soccer. Instead we got so much more!
Also, for pete's sake play Demons Crest. This is one of the best SNES games ever made and its such a shame that the series ended there.
@Ralizah,
Of course it does,but I assuming most of us on here are big Nintendo fans so we should be happy that we can just have everything on the list without having to stick to a budget.
Finally a justifiable reason to have online. Sweet
@WiltonRoots,
Super tennis is awesome and until your comment I did not know it was coming.
SNES GAMES, SNES GAMES, SNES GAMES!!! AND WE START OFF WITH 20!!! NOT ALL THOSE GAMES WITH A SPEED OF 2 A MONTH, NO, BAM, 20 IN ONE GO, WITH MORE EXTRA TO COME!!! I'M SO HAPPY RIGHT NOW!!!
20 games landing at once is great news... These could have been drip fed out over the next 6-8 months. What will be interesting is seeing how quickly more titles get released going forward. Regardless, it's added alot of value to the online service....
Super Mario World 2!! I couldn't believe it. Now just need FF6.
Great to see SNES games added to the service, and some nice ones from start too.
@acachewowow it is not free, because it's a part of the service you pay for it, same with PS+ or Xbox Live Gold monthly games.
@Ralizah,
Just thinking the Switch Lite with it's D pad has just come at the right time, I will be picking one up at launch I think.
(To Super Metroid 'new item' fanfare)
#Yay-I-Can-Play-SNES-Games-Now-And-That-Is-Pre-tty-Gooooood.#
Well done ninty, you did the right thing
@BlackenedHalo it is via emulator on the switch and Nintendo's emulator is ok but there are better emulators for your pc. I think you probably meant officially. It was available and still is, on the 3ds eshop too.
@BANJO I also didn't think 20 games would release at the same time but once they announced it I remembered that NES games launched that way too.
Fantastic, I thought they'd drip feed us titles for years but 20 off the bat is great.
@John_Deacon,
I think this was their plan all along, start with the NES games then release SNES titles pretty much on everybody's subscription renewal, I would imagine we will get N64 games around the same time next year.
@dystome I know. I’m going to be beating Super Metroid and Link to the Past again. These new fangled entertainments can wait 😂
@skulltulips,
I don't know why we expected anything else, when Nintendo launched the online service they gave us a decent selection of NES titles, it was only after launch they drip fed us a couple of titles each month.
Now this is epic
Finally Super Metroid!!!
Not surprised but I am pleased. I hope we get some more SNES JRPGs eventually on that list!
@Crono1973 Yes thats true. Perhaps it's not as much of a surprise after all considering that.
I hope we get a SNES icon in addition to the NES one, pretty sure they will do this, it will be great as more retro systems are added.
@johnvboy basic online functions.
I bought a SNES classic already. I can play SNES games in 720p...
@LinktotheFuture "...hooraaay..."
Unfortunately this was the best announcement for me. I’m glad they’re offering individual controllers this time though, I’ll definitely grab one.
Well done Nintendo.
No you guys have to find something else to complain about 24/7
Hopefully the next will be Gamecube, right? Or is that asking too much?
@Trajan,
I would much rather have these games on the Nintendo Switch's screen, but each to their own I guess, also being a Nintendo fan I just do not want to go down the piracy route.
Meh. When is the Dreamcast games coming
Can't wait. Actraiser, Earthbound, Super PunchOut, and so much more. This is listening to your fans. Salute Nintendo!
@The_Legged_One,
You can be sure of one thing, no matter what Nintendo add to their online service certain people will still complain, even if the service was totally free.
@Rayquaza2510 Really? I swear my switch just came with it for free. Maybe I am just the lucky one.
My meaning is they could have added a fee of 5-10 bucks or offered an ultimate version with a premium. So ya, pretty much free. I am not one to cry about spilt milk.
@LavaTwilight Right Faxanadu when!
@Joekun,
Why is that unfortunate, I bet it was great news for a lot of Nintendo fans.
Nice to see Super Tennis there, one of the best tennis games ever made.
The best announcement of the Direct!
@johnvboy Being a Nintendo fan, you of course have the original hardware.
I just wish they had this separate from the online.
@ryancraddock £26.99 in the UK.
Link
https://mynintendostore.nintendo.co.uk/catalog/product/view/id/668
@OnBeingHuman,
Without a doubt, and that's saying something because it was a pretty awesome direct imho.
It's about time! They ran out of NES games 4-5 months ago.
@Trajan,
No I don't collect old systems, it's just not my thing so this online subscription is perfect for me.
So does this mean that we'll end up with GameCube games in September 2021?
@Julien I know right, the uk one should’ve been up first and then the us parma violet one lol
@Julien Cheers! I've updated the article 🙂
@johnvboy A Nintendo fan that doesn't collect? Interesting.
What a time to be alive! That was an incredible Nintendo Direct
@wolvesboy The UK (and Japanese) controller looks so much nicer and playful. The missus disagrees but then she's American.
@ryancraddock You're welcome and awesome / brilliant!
@Trajan,
I just don't think there would be that much interest in a Virtual console service from the wider Switch audience, and I am pretty sure Nintendo would have gone this way if they thought they could make more money, if Nintendo have had just gone and released 20 or so SNES games at say $5.00 each, I could not justify buying them all, even more so when I have already bought them on the Wii and Wii U's Virtual console service, this is a much better idea imho.
I've never played Kirby's dreamland 3 or Super Soccer. Now I can try them
Ah crap, now i have to play through A Link to the Past for the 20th time - poor me
@johnvboy You cannot give "them" too much at once or it will be expected. I have heard more crying about a 20 service from people who are also complaining about how expensive joycons are while posting pictures of their 40$ mod of said joycon.
Side Note: What a banger that direct was.
Come on Nintendo! How dare you after I finally finished all the NES games offered. How am I supposed to find time to play my backlog now? I cannot believe Nintendo did this to me!
Seriously though, this is awesome and I am excited for tomorrow even if I don't think I will be able to play them until Friday. The thing is SNES games are going to get a less complaints than the NES ones because game developers learned a lot about game design by then and there are a lot less garbage games on the SNES.
This is so great!
@johnvboy People do forget having to repurchase games on VC for 5 a pop.
Wow, finally Ninty doing just about everything right.
@Trajan,
Well I have owned every console Nintendo have ever made with the exception of the Virtual boy, for me I just don't get all that worked up over retro consoles, I didn't buy the mini systems because I wanted to play these games on the Nintendo switch's screen, I see what you are getting at but I still consider myself a big Nintendo fan.
@acachewowow,
And moaning about the pricing system at the time, and the fact they had to pay another small fee when the same games became available on the Wii U's virtual console service, I must admit I do get whiplash from peoples changing opinions on here.
A great reveal. Maybe now I can finally play through Super Mario World. Some shoe-ins I expect to see down the line are the Donkey Kong Country trilogy and EarthBound. Perhaps Nintendo will even throw in some Satellaview games down the line?
@johnvboy No, I'm saying have all these games as a service separate from the online. This service is worth it for many at $20 a year, but for those of us that already have or have played these games it means nothing.
I would just like to have a functional online service like every other platform.
This was the highlight of the direct for me. Super metroid, alttp, smw here I come! Glad it didn't spike in price 😆
@The_Legged_One They will. They always will.
Dam y’all already giving us great online for pennies, and now free snes games this deal is too good to be legal.
@Julien I agree with you, and plus the non Parma violet ones are easier to tell younger games what button does what, if I said oh it’s the purple button to my kids I would probably get told THEIR ALL PURPLE! 😂
Deffo getting a SNES controller though and that’s the uk one 😂
I'm liking this opening lineup!
The controller is tempting, but I already have an 8Bitdo SF30 Pro and a GBros wireless adapter that I use to plug in my SNES Classic Controller.
Took them long enough, but better late than never!
@Trajan,
I doubt that there will be many people posting on video game internet forums that have not played and owned these games multiple times, and as much as I was a big fan of the Virtual console services on the Wii and Wii U there was issues with them.
@MarioLover92 It's not late. The SNES games are there to win people over who subscribed for one year of NSO last year. They will do this next year with N64 games
@johnvboy I just found it curious. Usually the people who are super against pirating old ROMs usually own the original games.
I'm still holding out for a N64 classic. Still own all of that, but I'd like a nice Goldeneye/Perfect Dark emulation box.
@sanderev,
Nice to see mainly positive comments so far.
Here's hoping for Lester the Unlikely and Hong Kong 97!
One entire year to add SNES to the service.
I can’t say I’m ungrateful but I just lost the interest at this point, specially after buying a SNES Classic and adding the rest of the games to it.
@sanderev Yeah I see where you're coming from - it's pretty much been a year since NSO came out, after all. It just felt like an eternity to me. XD
Either way, glad to see SNES games on the Switch!
@Trajan,
I suppose I just don't like clutter, I will own current generation hardware but just like official emulation, and just to clarify I have no issue if people wan't to use emulators on older games, hell I am pretty sure Nintendo have made their money many times over on each and every title, and I quite like the way they are not trying to milk us a third time with these games.
I really love Nintendo even more for this. Their service is worth it just for the games alone.
@MarioLover92 Yep. I just hope they will add Chrono Trigger and Breath of Fire 2 soon / as well.
Now Nintendo are starting to understand what the players want. Pilotwings, Super Metroid, Yoshi's Island, can't wait. Will it be another 12 months until they release N64 games?
@MattyHammo,
While I would live to believe this I don't, Nintendo did the exact same thing with it's NES launch nearly a year ago, and now when everybody's initial subscription are about to end they launch SNES games on the service, or am I just being very cynical.
Look guys, stop saying these games are free! They are not free! They cost $20 a year! I'm utterly disappointed in this just as I am with the NES games! I want to "own" my games and curate my "own" collection. I shouldn't have to subscribe to an online service when I don't play online (again I'll reiterate I don't have Internet service at home so an online service is as useless as tits on a boar hog). Why not bring back the VC formula and integrate it into the service? Buy the games you want to play at all times and try out others you may be on the fence on! But don't, DON'T, leave out those of us who could care less about online gaming from getting basic features.
I want all 3 Donkey KONG games added ASAP
@GameOtaku
Wait if you do not have Internet service how are u on here whining
@sanderev Me too, those games weren't even on the SNES Classic. I know Chrono Trigger came out on the Wii Virtual Console, but as we know already the Wii Shop Channel's gone now.
@NintendoByNature Yeah I’m not ashamed to say that when I thought of Link to the Past and saw “rewind” feature, I immediately thought about fighting that stupid worm and rewinding every time I fall through the floor. 😄
@GameOtaku,
Of course they are not totally free, but I think they are pretty good value, and a lot better value than the Virtual console service, and you can bet your bottom dollar I would have bought all these games again if Nintendo had have released a Virtual console service for the Switch.
@KnightWolf
A phone with one bar of 1x that's 8 years old that only has 2gb of data a month! Try living in a rural area sometime!
@NotTelevision lol, its definitely one of the more annoying boss fights in the game. That's not to say it's a bad one, it just blows having to fall through and trek back up
@johnvboy
Not this time we wouldn't have since you can tie your switch and 3ds/wiiu to an account.
@GameOtaku,
So out of interest if you have no online service at home how would you connect to the internet and download Virtual console games, and for that matter connect your console to the internet to even access a virtual console service in the first place, to cultivate your games collection that is.
Need Donkey Kong Country 2.
@Savino bro, super tennis is the best tennis game of the 16 bit era...period...i would agree you are defiantly in the minority with the feeling that it's bad.
@Franklin,
Some people are never happy, you want the moon on a stick my friend, in saying that I want Game cube games on the service, damn you Nintendo.
@GameOtaku,
Ah but there are benefits to living in a rural area, you will get much cleaner air and less crime, your internet may suck, but just goes to show you can't have it all.
Why so many Puyo Puyo games all a sudden? This is more than enough.
The online subscription might be finally worthwhile. Good to see some of the rarer games like Stunt Race and Demon's Crest. I regret never buying Demon's Crest at the time (I remember casing the box with a "should I or shouldn't I"), and now it's worth a fortune for a boxed version.
About time 😊, seriously though great move Nintendo.
Finally! Great news however I’m still looking for that purchase option Nintendo! Some of these are a mandatory purchase!!
At last, bravo Nintendo. Link to the past and Super Ghosts & Ghouls, 2 of my all time favorites is in the list. Yes.
@johnvboy I’m hoping for some great ports like Windwaker HD, Metroid Prime Trilogy, Pikmin 4, Mario Sunshine, etc. SNES is great, but I wish it were the icing on something more for me. It’s cool though, I have more than enough to play.
@johnvboy
I have these games on the SNES mini already.
If only there was a way we could buy the specific games we wanted, like a games Console, but in the Virtual realm...
@johnvboy
You are certain that Nintendo have made rational decisions? Nintendo?
I'm happy! Nintendo I will renew my subscription, I'm so hoping Super Mario All stars turns up at some point. I love that game.
Does anyone know when the service will go live?
Also someone (@Julien Thank you) put a link up for the SNES controllers, so I had a look, you can buy up to four controllers per account. Blimey, I'd like two or three please if I can, once they go live....
I can't wait to play Pilot Wings again.
Do they ship those controllers internationally?
Hopefully we can turn off the ugly borders now
@LavaTwilight me too! I would love Faxanadu
@607jf ??? 10 years??? You could play these games 25 years ago....
So?
@Franklin this is the first batch... There are more to come
@GameOtaku not really, the on line service for playing on lone Mario kart, Splatoon, Mario maker costs 20 bucks. I would pay for it without additional nes or snes games.
Those are as good as free to me.
@rushiosan and there will another year to add N64 games! Cant wait!
So when do these updates usually become available?
It's hoping for a 12:00 AM EST release being too optimistic? I don't know why they didn't drop them now.
@Dark-Luigi yes. Too much... The next one is the N64!... You'll have to wait until 2021 for GameCube games
Now if they could just get Final Fantasy on there (and the Free Enterprise ROM hack).
Highlight of the direct for me!!
Pretty happy with the games, I never thought I would see Demon's Crest been release somewhere again so hugh surprise, althought here in Brazil we don't have the chance to get the controller offer, I would definily buy this sweety.😢😢😢😢😢
@johnvboy
I've a friend that's runs an analog game/ book / computer repair store and I usually drop in once a week and download games and use the Internet there. But with the check in policy VC is leaps above the rental service. I don't know how many times I have to tell the story but I had coins to use so I got a one month subscription. I played the nes games for about a week went to the store again all day long, but that Saturday night when I was home it wanted to check in. So there I was a week without access to the games, Saturday rolled around and it checked in so I got another week of gameplay! The same exact thing happened the next week lost it because of check in then gained it back for half of the last week since the sub ran out (although it should've let me play till the next Saturday since I checked in and was offline, the check in is redundant since it cuts you off anyway regardless).
And just like that Switch Online went from mediocre to really excellent value.
The jump in quality from NES to SNES is huge.
Me, before SNES was on NSO: Give us SNES!
Me, after SNES is on NSO: Give us SNES RPGs!
You will never satisfy me, Nintendo.
@The_Legged_One No you guys have to find something else to complain about 24/7
Well they have already started asking for games not included in the initial 20 and they will complain until every game they want is released.
Literally just re-subscribed to the online now.
@GameOtaku I agree, the once a week check in is lame. The games should automatically be available for the length of the subscription. It makes no sense.
I imagine there aren't many people affected by this, but still, it's completely unnecessary.
Now to sit back and wait for people to start complaining that SNES games have been milked to death and the online service is a rip-off until N64 games are added.
Good call adding Demons Crest. It's one of my all time fav SNES games.
Wow! I never imagined they would resurrect Breath Of Fire! I am of the lucky guy who once owned a SNES and a BOF cartridge! It was my first old school RPG! I remembered it has lots of rewarding mysteries to unlock! The elusive Agni is one of the best! I loved Bo's merge ability too!
Sadly, I don't think Chrono Trigger will ever make it to this list, because it's already been released as a single game for purchase in Google Play Store.
Now we're talking! And this is a great starting lineup! Quite a few games I've been wanting to go through again.
@ouroborous Surely if you just never reconnected to the internet then it couldn’t tell if your subscription was over then? Weekly checks are a messy solution to the problem however.
@oji I don't think Gamecube like this would be possible. Could you imagine the size of the app launching with 20 games? XD
Free puyo? Heck yeah!
Kirby's Dream Course is a lot of fun too. I like playing versus and knocking the other player off the map :3 Though I don't have many people to play with these days...
So, does this mean it'll finally put an end to all that whining from the previous articles on this topic?
@Enigminator Why no. Now begins the "Where are the N64 games?!?" complaints.
@Angelic_Lapras_King And then GameCube games.
Gimme that Starfox 2 eventually, pl0x. Then we can talk about Starfox 64 on the off chance they add N64 games in some form.
That aside, things are starting to get good. I still appreciate having the NES games, and I hope they keep releasing more alongside the SNES games. But the SNES games are where games start feeling beefier. Looking forward to being able to carry all of these around with me.
Fantastic lineup! Happy to see Breath of Fire... I've really been hoping for a port of Breath of Fire III.
I hope you whiners are happy that the snes games are coming. All you had to do was wait because they already had a plan to bring it. You just had to be patient, instead of constantly, complaining and whining about it. But I know it is not going to end, because you will complain and whine about something else that doesn't go your way.
Awesome Game Boy and GBA next please.
This is a superb collection of games. I cannot wait to play Yoshi's Island aka the finest game ever made in handheld. I also look forward to playing Breath of Fire for the first time.
We now have
Puyo Puyo Tetris
Puyo Puyo Esports
Puyo Puyo Sega Ages
Puyo Puyo Sega Ages exclusive to Japan
Dr Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine
and now
Super Puyo Puyo 2
@Angelic_Lapras_King Maybe you're right, but for me, the size isn't that big. The GC mini-disc' size is limited by 1.4GB. Doing a little math 20 games took only 28GB, maximum. And if this size is still too huge for Nintendo, I'm good even with a 10 best titles package.
I told y'all y'all complained for nothing. Enjoy!
FINALLY people will shut up 😂
Thank God! Now kids will stop whining everytime they announce the NES updates -_-
Really solid lineup. Hopefully Star Fox 2, Mario RPG, Chrono Trigger and the DKC trilogy get added eventually. But yeah, really good start and they didn't up the price either.
Where is donkey Kong 💔
Holy moly! Finally here Great news!
I hope Starfox 2 will be added.
Little bit odd that the trio of major SNES Kirby games are all here (Don't @ me about the Satellaview games or Avalanche (which is technically here)) except for Super Star. But, that'll probably added later on (unlike 3DS VC).
My body is ready.
@Franklin,
Nintendo make business decisions as they are there to make money at the end of the day.
This is cool. If Super Punch Out comes following I'll have all the SNES games I could imagine needing, and I guess I'll just have to repurpose my SNES themed 3DS to, well, play 3DS games 😁
So glad Star Fox is in there. What a time to be alive 🥳
<3 Nintendo. Hope Zombies ate my neighbours makes it, loved that game.
@johnvboy
Come on.
That is actually a pretty great opening lineup.
Excellent. The Online Service just became massively more attractive. Didn’t expect 20 games either so that’s a bonus.
Really cool ! There are some really great games in the line up
@ouroborous I find Demon’s Crest way to difficult personally.
@Savino Super tennis is an absolute classic and still amazing to play. Soccer does suck though.
Only thing missing is Mario RPG
@sandman89 DK games was by Rare, who are owned by Microsoft now.
We will be lucky to see it
What time exactly lol
@AndyRogan Nintendo has re-released Donkey Kong Country 1, 2 and 3 several times. Including on 3DS and SNES Mini.
To be honest, doubt I will play any of these except Stunt Race FX as I lost my original cartridge years ago.
Haha, does anyone remember this bit of news back in Jan?
https://www.nintendolife.com/news/2019/01/rumour_dataminer_uncovers_snes_games_for_nintendo_switch_online_service
turns out it was pretty on point.
Maybe a bit of a spoiler for what's coming next.
This comment section started of with "so maybe N64 next year" to "definitely GameCube in 2021"
I can already feel the rage as next year they announce Gameboy for Nintendo Switch Online next year.
@AndyRogan Mario is Missing?
yay. don't want to sound greedy but hopefully they continue providing more nintendo consoles yearly. Gamecube hopefully one day
If I live in poland, is ordering SNES controller via UK eshop website my only option? The shipping cost to PL is ridiculous...
Awesome news. LttP!
hopefully everyone is now finally happy! I really hope we get more than 3 titles a month like the nes games, theres no reason they couldnt drip feed nes and snes games! unless thats now it for nes games which I would be totally fine with
@Franklin,
What do you mean fella, Nintendo would have got complaints no matter which way they when't with their retro games, when they released the mini systems people complained about the games and availability, when Nintendo had their virtual console services on the Wii and Wii U certain people complained about the pricing and the fact you had to pay a small fee when you downloaded the same titles again on the Wii U, as well as the old "I have bought and played these titles over and over again" line.
Just step back from out forum posting internet minority mindset for a second and consider this, The Nintendo Switch is appealing to a much broader demographic than the Wii U, and as a resutl just might have attracted new customers to the console, customers that have never played these retro titles before, and are more than happy with a subscription based service, when Nintendo last catered for the core Nintendo fans it was running a Virtual console service on a console with only 13 million or so users, which I will be my bottom dollar pretty much all of were core video game/Nintendo fans, and I will also wager that Nintendo's revinue from the service was poor because these gamers had already bought and played these retro games time and time again, in fact I very much doubt I would have had much interest in buying all these games for a third time, Nintendo had to come up with a better solution that catered for everybody and I believe this is it.
Well it's about damn time!
@lemonjellydude,
I am pretty sure Nintendo will add more systems as time goes on, and just imagine the library of classic games we will have access too, although we have to wait until the 6th for SNES games in the U.K.
@abe_hikura If it’s the GBA library I’m all in. There were some phenomenal games released on that system (some killer GB games too).
About time! Hopefulley sole obscure games appear in the following months, Likes in the ins Hanabi weeks in wii vc
@AndyRogan we will definitely see it
@AndyRogan u do know they are on the wii u eshop and 3ds e shop.besides Nintendo owns the character.mico owns the i.p...mico cant use donkey kong..that is why in the new donkey kong games k r rool aint in it
Can't wait to get my teeth sunk into Yoshi's Island and yet another play of Super Metroid.
SNES games were long overdue, and i liked the tease on the Smash reveal for the next character.
I'm really, really happy. I hope DK Country 1-2-3 will arrive soon!
@johnvboy
They could go the route of Sony and allow crossbuy since they now have an account system in place. Ideally they shouldn't restart the service for every piece of hardware from scratch. They have nearly 400 games on VC across 3ds and wiiu VC so why not combine them into a unified VC service then there will be no exclusives such as star tropics only on wiiu and Recca only on 3ds. They also stand to make money on individual purchases afterall there are those like myself who wouldn't subscribe even if we could. All that's needed besides is manual save back ups and then everyone can truly play their way as the switch intended.
@LavaTwilight Absolute gem
@Bass_X0 Yes, being a part of the Ghost ‘n Goblins series, difficulty is highly expected
My only gripe is that, yet again, they don’t just give us Mario All-Stars
@YessMasster I don't live in Poland but I was looking at postage and to send to Poland is £17! what a shame. I'd say still get one or two though.
@Antraxx777 hopefully Super Mario All stars will appear soon (I dunno when)
This makes me so happy.
Really looking forward to the day I can play Mario Kart 64 online though
@deadpixels I'd hope it was an "all in one" library with GB, GBC, and GBA
Online service is online. Go figure. SMH. Mobile HP check-in.
The inclusion of Breath of Fire makes me hopeful for many more awesome RPGs later on.
Really happy about this, I'm looking forward to replaying ALttP and Super Metroid
anyone notice the japan line up includes Super Family Tennis (smash tennis in Europe) instead of Super Tennis ?
Looking forward to Super Soccor, been a while since I played that last.
Any idea when the service will be up today? I’m still waiting. I was hoping for play some SMW before I started my day.
the fact that Europe gets it a day later is unfair, it should be today like everywhere else
Hmmm... might be time to dip my toe in switch subs.....grew up on the ones was holy grail at the time and would love to replay pilotwings and zelda.....hopefully n64 wave race too soon! Please wave race please I'll sacrifice a dolphin for wave race
@John_Deacon They're listening to their investors. FTFY
Well finally they listened, but where is Battletoads? Honestly thus helps in making it more worthwhile and I will likely renew.
@KryptoniteKrunch
I agree the initial lineup is fairly solid. I see a few titles on there I want to play. I was worried about a price increase the way he was leading into the announcement but it worked out good.
@Zidentia I believe you will find Battletoads on Microsoft's console these days.
Stilll.... no chat.....
Where are the Gameboy games? Those are what I really want.
@diablo2 Thank God they're (a little) better than EA's investors
Maybe N64 games next year?
@BarefootBowser
Yes, one can hope.
Awesome. I haven't played Super Tennis in over 20 years - loved that game. Playing Star Fox on the train will be great.
@Darknyht
I know but in the spirit of cooperation I am waging a campaign to bring it back to Nintendo. It was an awesome game and so much fun to play.
I'm surprised they're starting with so many of the heavy hitters.
Thirteen out of twenty I have never played before so a lot of them will be like new games. I'm not sure about Breath of Fire. I remember playing one or two of them on an emulator in the early 2000's but I'm not sure which one. I remember enjoying it very much though. The cover of Super Soccer looks very familiar so I think I've played it. I had a lot of soccer games on the SNES.
Donkey Kong Country next month please? Oh, and Mario's Time Machine.
@Savino When it came out it was one of the highest rated games on the system, always scoring in the 90's. You might not liek it but that doesn't make it a bad game.
@lifepsychedelic
They will emulate all their machines as part of the Online service eventually. That’s how they’ll push up the price of the Subscription over the next few years. They made the effort to get N64 running on the Wii, I’m sure they can manage on the Switch.
Can't wait until some bad Mario edutainment titles and Pit Fighter are added and y'all praise them as hidden gems, but still don't give Vice Project Doom the time of day.
What. Freaking. Time. Every single article says "Oh here's the list of all the snes games you'll get on Thursday Sep. 5th!! And here's exactly what time the UK gets it, but the US will get it on the 5th. WHAT. TIME?!
@8bitdaysaweek reason being that Japanese super tennis has the sh!t word in it instead of rats and the characters are all charactures of real players.
Obviously much better, but Nintendo probably don’t want to be sued!
hopefully the SNES games app will be more organized then the NES games app. that gives nintendo a reason to update the NES games app...
maybe the SNES controller can be used when playing the NES games.
since it is already the 5th, where is the SNES games app. i have a Nintendo online subscription and i would like to start playing the games soon.
Nintendo continuing the tradition of making Europe wait for SNES games after the rest of the world has got them...
Where's the SNES app??
Stayed up all night and it isn't out quite yet! Can't wait, though.
Still not live on US servers.... I reckon they will come out at the same time in the US as the UK... which still means eh US gets them on the 5th
@Darknyht we have Cuphead, Ori and Banjo in Smash so I don't think a Battletoads game on Switch is a massive leap.
What about Uni-Rally?
Please it was sooooooo good 😁 👍
@BulkSlash no ones got them yet
@BootyMessiah coming in ~3 hours
@BulkSlash I'm in the US, EST 4:13PM still don't have them....don't wannnnnna complain but...I mean, why not just launch them so it hits for every region in the morning, their time? We've waited almost 3 full years to play a SNES game on our Switch, lol.
Yeah I can confirm along with the other US comments that I've seen no sign of these SNES games. I'm playing DQ Builders 2 so I'm not too bothered but I kinda wanted to see the SNES Online myself, maybe consider doing some runs through Mario World and Yoshi's Island later on. Maybe when I wake up in the morning, they'll be there.
@Onion I guess it wouldn't be Switch Online if they didn't flub something up a bit. Starting to get on in the day a bit.
Strange. The site (in the US) says "Available Now" but there's no link to set it to download to your Switch.
The Super Famicom equivalent isn't showing up anywhere on my Japanese account either.
Figuted that Snes games would come here sooner. Though what's suprising that there's No additional charge considering another console is on deck.
Though It's a bunch of problems of online service still exists and the snes games aint a fix-all even if n64 games are out next, this gives the Online service a push to be a bit more competent and attractive to Nintendo's onlin--
Omg Is that Yoshi's island, starfox and stunt racer out the gate?! YES PLEASE!!
I've been waiting alllll day, come on now
Just popped up for me in the US. Of course it's now when I'm going to sleep but at least I have a nice little gift to wake up to.
Can anyone confirm if those 8Bitdo snes controller work on switch sness games?
I just have to keep reminding myself that paying for the online service is still a form of paying for these games again. 20 games is easier to swallow than $5 a pop though. 'He who controls the spice...' and all that.
@TheGameTutor I don't disagree, but I don't think it will come via NES or SNES Online. Just like we will probably never see Contra, Castlevania, or other games that are released as collections. There is no incentive to release on the Nintendo service when they believe they will make money putting it in their own collection package.
We may one day see Rare Replay, but Battletoads will remain absent from the service.
One year of NES online - 20 hours played
One week of SNES online - more than 20 hours played!
