Re: Round Up: The Reviews Are In For The Legend Of Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom

zidentia

A review is just a personal opinion where bias certainly can be pulled into the overall rating. As one said trying to find a like minded person is one solution but quite difficult. Also, in todays world, writers/reviewers are much more guided by momentary issues than in the past. Clicks, reselling data, tiered articles and merchandise sales play a much bigger role in success as a reviewer. This is not a criticism but a an observation based on personal experience and perspective. In the early days of game journalism games were tougher and they had to have a certain replay ability or really solid programming to bring new players to the developer. Writers were also looking to be informative in an era where data was sparse and still relied much on word of mouth.

Again, personal opinion most certainly came into play in the early days but it was easier to narrow in on a favorite magazine, writer or genre because there was not much to pick from yet and they depended on subscriptions and the recurring ads that followed subscription levels. Now there are more than enough places on the internet to get opinions and to stand out and get clicks some people will go to lengths to get that by purposely creating clickbait.

It is very difficult to follow up on a hit game like BOTW and Nintendo could have easily screwed this up but it sounds like they were able to do just that. Obviously if the previous game was not your thing the new one likely will not change your mind.

Re: Nintendo Switch Surpasses One Billion Software Sales

The Switch is my favorite now, replacing the DS. The addition of Super Nintendo and GBA games is really a plus for me. On the other hand I just picked up a Japanese 3DS and this is my first 3DS and I really like it. It’s like the DS but much better.

Re: Random: Chris Pratt's Mario Movie Voice Was Initially Deemed Too "Tony Soprano"

zidentia

The movie was good. Martinets voice clips would have changed the story dynamic quite a bit though. Chris Pratt sounded like himself and to be honest he faded away into the background, not good or bad just bleh. Luigi and Bowser were the standouts while Donkey Kong was like a Pineapple Express redo. I am not a Seth Rogen fan but I am not sure who I would like to see in this role. Cranky Kong was just bad. Toad was good but limited by his lines. Princess Peach was stiff and predictable. There just was no chemistry between her and Mario/Chris Pratt here, not that I exactly expected it.
The real joy of the movies was seeing the Nintendo logo roll and the loads of game references. I did not think we would see a deep storyline but it was too rushed.

I expected the humor to be better but I imagine Nintendo was concerned about straying too far from the games concepts.

Re: Metroid Prime Engineer Calls Out Nintendo, Says Not Crediting OG Devs In Remaster Is "Petty And Ridiculous"

This is a situation somewhat unique to the software industry. There are teams, individual artists, composers and arrangers, team leads and heads that make up a development cycle or project. Programming teams are involved in a fair amount of the crunch cycle that others are not. They absolutely contribute but it is more of a point in time as opposed to a continuous cycle. Therein lies the friction with teams that develop or code areas or physics. Traditional protocol is to credit teams or every team member on a project based on the company’s normal policy. Many times credited persons may not be included based on the amount of time they contribute to the project and so forth.

What many people conflate is the creation of an individual creative work versus a collaboration work. An individual work absolutely need to be always credited. A collaboration credit is really voluntary because the IP is actually owned by the publisher/developer and it is up to them.

Aside from all of this I do understand the feeling these developers are expressing but I have worked on a lot of projects where I received no credit and others I have prominent mention. I also publish written works where I am the sole credit outside of the illustrator and I hold the rights. I think if the game had poor sales these developers would not be as vocal.

Re: Mario Movie Continues To Smash Global Box Office Records In Opening Weekend

I have not seen it but plan to possibly tomorrow. The minions movies are not cinema art but they are entertaining and you rewatch them for the characters and the jokes. Not the story. If you expect more then perhaps plan to be left wanting.

It’s ok to like this and then watch a Raymond Chandler movie. People are allowed multifaceted interests in media.

Re: Round Up: The First Impressions Of The Super Mario Bros. Movie Are In

zidentia

So people are expecting a movie based on the decades of video gameplay of a toy company to have a deep and engrossing plot line? Really?

I personally feel most of the entertainment media is catering to the 75% by dishing mediocrity to the masses that refuse to demand better. From magical teenagers to illogical monster hybrids, the script writing is beyond trash and people complain but streamers keep dishing it out.

I totally expect this to be a minion clone with Nintendo iconography and that’s ok.

Re: Site News: Love What We Do? Become A Nintendo Life Supporter!

I mostly lurk now after being trolled by a NL staffer who never owned up to it and the various trolls that come on here. The crackdown on the comments while probably well intentioned has become censorship for the most part.

As far as paying for ad free browsing I don’t use an ad blocker on my phone but on my laptop I do. The reason is not to deny the site income but to block the scammers who track me through multiple resell info exchanges that NL, possibly unknowingly, creates. These same scammers will try to steal your information /identity for financial gain. I use location blocking and a rotating VPN’s as well. While I do see some articles of worth on here occasionally, the comparison to previous gaming magazines is not even logical. They did have ads but it was very difficult to track subscription information and you can easily ignore the ads if you wanted to. The quality and editing was also of a higher caliber.

Re: The Final Super Mario Bros. Movie Trailer Is An Action-Packed Thrill Ride

zidentia

I still want to see the movie but the things that make me cringe are:
1) Chris Pratt. I like most of what he does but the voice is just not there.
2)Seth Rogen. Not really a fan and he is just being Seth Rogen here which is not good enough for this character.
3) The whole Peach thing is overplayed. The warrior female is great but not new for Peach or basically every thing else recently.

The animation looks great but seems a bit too familiar. I did see more game references in this trailer such a Mario Odyssey. Luigi and Toad seem like they are a good fit voice wise and personality. Jack Black seems to be one of the best in the trailers so far.

I hope the "plot" is better than the trailers indicate. This is a movie after all and since we cannot play it we need a deeper story to follow. That previous statement seems ironic considering Miyamoto once said gameplay was more important than story.

Re: Random: Internet Goes Wild Over One Incredibly Small Detail In Metroid Dread

@MarcelM
It seems like you are confusing movement with collision. The physics engine is using the location of the object, in this case the rock cropping bitmap, to place the animation of the character and by extension the hand as directed by the code. It's a fairly simple programming trick and when combined with the animation of the character gives it a more organic movement. Which IK can do if they are using that.

Re: Review: Alex Kidd in Miracle World DX - Vintage Sega Hero In Mediocre Remake

@abdias
The article you quoted does not refute anything I said and I am guessing English is not your native language because it clearly says they used Merge games to get the licensing from Sega. I never mentioned if they had money. I said releasing a game without the licensing deal is both risky from a legal standpoint and costly. You do not understand the business which I get from what you have said so far and from this point I am done with the conversation because you have convinced yourself you are right.

Re: Review: Alex Kidd in Miracle World DX - Vintage Sega Hero In Mediocre Remake

zidentia

@BlueOcean @abdias
No you are both wrong. The publisher Merge games already had a relationship with Sega and had worked on a few titles including SOR 4. They worked with Sega to bring Janken on board and reimagine Alex Kidd. They absolutely were involved from the beginning.
Licenses do not work as an afterthought. It is too expensive and risky to work on a game and pay programmers and artists then ask for terms.

Re: Metroid Dread Tops Amazon's "Best Sellers" Chart

zidentia

In my opinion this looks great based on the trailer and I pre ordered it. I was looking at some other games but this looks solid. Sometimes you just know! ; - /
I am also going to get the Amiibos which will be a first for me. You know, you just know. Just me being me. I do try not judge a game by its trailer but life is full of these, just go for it moments.

@RupeeClock
Reading the Reddit and the Blog post(the video is private) I really do not see anything more than people upset that they made decisions to ensure they had as much success as they could. I actually agree with the Kickstarter comments as we have seen the same thing. They can go really wrong sometimes.
