Re: Soapbox: Is It Time For Game Rental Stores To Return?

zidentia

This meandering article aside game rental could still work. The only places that could pull it off are Walmart or Amazon. I would not trust Amazon to be impartial so Walmart would be the most likely considering they have the infrastructure and POS systems already set up for it(yes Walmart does have a rental system but no longer uses it). In addition the location of electronics is typically in the rear center of the store so it could be used as an impulse driver. I think that Walmart covers a large part of the planet but they might be leaving the UK.

It is a real shame Sears did not follow up on this either. They briefly created an electronics division that focused on smarthome, maker products and they had hired some gaming veterans to look at a new console and software but it fell apart. They really needed a different CEO and a better strat plan.

Re: Switch Online Members Can Save 30% On Wireless NES Controllers (North America)

The NSO is a decent value in my opinion but not when compared to the Wii/Wii U system. I think comparing to MS/Sony is a mistake because they are different animals. These programs all are like Steam though, which is horrible from my perspective, because you never own the games, only the right to rent them while available.
The only reason I keep it is to play games that are unavailable otherwise and they have been emulated already.

Re: Nintendo Scores Another Victory In Its War Against Switch Piracy

@COVIDberry
I do not agree with that aspect of it but it is customary for most companies to make you sign a non disclosure/IP rights control. I lost control of several things that have generated hundreds of thousands dollars revenue for companies in the past. I no longer do that. I went back out on my own. It’s has its pros and cons but that is the reality of it.

Re: Feature: Developers Respond To The Recent Twitter Furore Over The Definition Of 'Game Dev'

zidentia

@BLD
The problem is the term has been misused for years once it was shortened to "Developer", The original title is "Program Developer" which is normally the coders, physic engine developers, leads and sometimes the project manager, depending on the studio. There were always art, sound, conceptual, betas and marketing people. Are they part of the "game development"? Absolutely but most of the ones I know really do not care as long as they are appreciated for their contribution and they are paid apropos to their hours worked. We all know when crunch becomes longer because a mistake was made or a manager does not know how to communicate goals to the team or normal delays to the upper management they suddenly think you will work for free.

That is the real issue.

Re: Nintendo Scores Another Victory In Its War Against Switch Piracy

Piracy cannot be defined as anything other than stealing IP(or other creations) that was created and/or belongs to someone besides your self. How you pirate it makes little difference. Yes, Nintendo is a large company and became one by consistently creating innovative products and protecting their work. No one forces you to purchase their products and to malign them because they are successful is irrational. All companies protect their investment and I have also went after pirates who stole my work. It is part of the industry unfortunately. The only real problem we have is games not being preserved. There are far too many that have disappeared, been tied up in owner/equity suits or left to languish. That is a lot of hard work never to be seen again especially by new generations.

Re: Video: Using a Mouse And Keyboard On Switch Isn't A Good Time

@Yorumi
Coding for a mouse and a joystick are very different and varies with the language you look at. In addition you are also dealing with I/O differences that create issues. You can mimic movements of either one with some routines but overall the Joystick can mimic the mouse better than the reverse.

Re: Exclusive: Writer Of Lockdown Horror Hit 'Host' Is Aiming To Revolutionise FMV Games With 'Ghosts'

zidentia

It really sounds like nothing. If "ghosts" are appearing in real time then it is artificial and this negates the community aspect of discovery of his concept because you should not be able to predict encounters. As someone mentioned this sounds like a Television show for digital natives. A FMV, which is a platform with unique challenges, can be either entertaining or campy/trashy but at least it could be something beyond "tune in at 10".

The Host movie is just a rehash of several movies/projects already out and does not appeal to me at all.

Re: Feature: Playing With Power: The Nintendo Story Is A Fun Documentary With Some Critical Flaws

zidentia

I finished watching it last night and it is better than the last documentary but they made some odd editing choices. As noted in the review they jumped over events and then went back later in the episodes which will confuse those that are not familiar with the history. They left a lot out of course and no real true background detail was confirmed or revealed but it was more of a tribute to Nintendo. Some of the people I have met and know but Tommy Tallarico I do not. In the show, Mr Tallarico seems to be kind of a jerk even more so than Nolan which I expected.
