Wii U2 on the other hand... stares into crystal ball expect a slight hardware upgrade with a new controller. And everyone will buy it to play the new Mario.
I don't think there will be a new handheld per se. Technically there hasn't been a new handheld since the DS in 2004 - only incremental upgrades (the gap between DSi and 3DS wasn't much let's be honest) I think nintendo will bring out new models every year like it has for the last few years (like Apple does) and they'll keep selling tonnes..
I won't be sad to see it go, the UK site was horrendously ugly and clunky compared to the lovely US site.
I was interested in saving up stars for while after I got a Wii U but half the time I had trouble signing in to my account, and I lost interest pretty quickly
It's a shame this is how the political system works. If you can afford to pay a lobbyist then you can influence politicians, and the more you pay, the bigger the influence..
I'm sorry to disappoint you - I'm a cameraman and I can tell you this from experience - the 'new' gamepad is actually a trick of the camera lens caused by the distant focus and a long lens. The light from the gamepad diffuses, or 'blooms', and makes the rest of the bevel seem small by comparison
You can try this at home if you have a camera - point the lens at your christmas tree and change the focus, the lights will seem massive
Good for these guys - I'll be downloading the beta and supporting them It just goes to show how smart Nintendo is to back indies, and here's the payback - these guys could be the Majong's of tomorrow, hope they make a billion
@WingedSnagret
I think they understand the idea of pent-up demand and word of mouth, you should read 'Game Over' by David Sheff, its a great biography of Nintendo in the 80s
I was in Game today in Belfast and spotted the £14.99 price tag, went online and found most Amiibos sold out on Amazon or trading for up to £30 second hand This is great news for Nintendo! It's like the Wii all over again
it's a real missed opportunity, because if ever a game was made for the gamepad and miiverse, this was it. Especially considering Sim City 64DD is considered the best in the series, I think it would have sold well.
@jariw I have an xbox 360 and a Wii U on the same wireless network and Xbox marketplace is instant, no loading times at all. On the eShop I'm stuck playing that silly slot machine game for a minute. It's a subtle wait but it's enough to put me off accessing eShop and Miiverse several times per day
Miiverse! Now THERE'S another missed opportunity - like so much with the system, an abundance of potential totally squandered by lazy execution. They've spent years building up a robust social network that still takes about a minute to load, where you can't post video or audio (except MK8 but it's dog slow), doesn't link to Facebook or Twitter etc etc etc
@Quorthon I don't see Sega selling much on PS4 and XBone either, unless I'm wrong? And there are game gear titles on 3DS...
I have to admit that the eshop and virtual console are a massive let down.
After 2 years, where are the N64 games? DS? Gamecube? Wii? Third parties have mostly abandoned it too. Where's Sega? And are we still banging on about Earthbound? That one title had a very limited appeal to begin with.
When it comes to interface, XBox marketplace puts the eshop to shame. eShop takes a good minute to load and is dog slow to navigate. And weren't we promised we could purchase titles from the web browser with a login ID, just like, I dunno, every other system on the market?
Poor showing Nintendo. And this is from a lifelong fan, I do feel very let down by Wii U
@sinalefa
The guy on the right is Glen Hansard, you probably know that song 'Falling Slowly' that won (? I think) an oscar a few years back. They go busking every christmas eve on Grafton st in Dublin for charity - which is where this photo is probably from
I used the youtube upload feature once, but it takes so long, you can't upload in the background, and there are very few customisable options - I haven't used it since
It may be good value, but they're still not going to sell a Wii U to the average consumer INSTEAD OF an XBone or PS4.
They needed to cut the price a year ago to an impulse-purchase price of around $250 to attract causal gamers off smartphones, and attract XBone and PS4 gamers to pick up a second system
Pissed off with Ubisoft at the moment. Playing AC: Rogue on the Xbox (sssh) at the moment - but just WISHING it was on Wii U. AC3 & 4 were THE BEST VERSIONS thanks to the gamepad map and miiverse (for when you get stuck) and a consistent framerate which made it a total delight to play.
Hopefully Microsoft will try and sue, resulting in an out of court settlement that sees Minecraft ported to Wii U and 3DS. Best case scenario. Then GTA4 and Assassins Creed Rogue magically follow for some reason.
This is a brilliant move imo People have been saying since before Wii that traditional home consoles are on their way out, Nintendo are doing what they've always done, redefining what interactive entertainment actually is If it's made like a game boy, that is with Nintendo's typical attention to detail and robust build quality and affordability (which it will be), it'll be a huge success (which it will be)
Good. Now can we have, please 1. A photo-video channel. You've no idea. This would entertain families for days, and its the perfect use of the gamepad. Who doesn't want to draw a moustache on grandma and post it to facebook? 2. Wii games launching straight from the Wii U menu 3. Gamepad button functionality in Wii mode (2 years and still I can't play ocarina of time on the gamepad... you owe us this Nintendo) 4. More stability. I don't think my Wii U is stable enough
Given up praying for Tvii to come to Europe, no one will even want it now by the time it arrives (kind of like Ubisoft games)
I don't get it. Wii U is outselling XBone by thousands a week according to the controversial site vgchartz - and from a variety of sources its install base is currently 7m to XBones 5m and P24s 10m..
The argument that Wii U is not selling DOES NOT WASH
There must be another reason why so many 3rd parties are shying away, it must be something Nintendo themselves are doing or not doing...
Good to see easy-to-understand coloured buttons coming back to nintendo hardware - playing SM3DW with my dad at christmas was difficult, telling him to press the 'A' button and he needed his reading glasses to tell which one it was...
Miiverse is still toooo sloooooow, so is eshop. It really puts me off posting or even checking my notifications. It's still browser based, why the web elements couldn't be integrated into a static OS I don't know - for example, Miiverse notifications in games like SM3DW, or, day I say it, Xbox 360's OS....
Incredible news!!!!!!! This is a great move by Nintendo and will turn Amiibo into a force to be reckoned with.. And I hope Wii Coconut Mall is one of the DLC classic tracks..
I wonder will online players be able to play DLC tracks without buying first..?
Great point - I think Wii U will be a second console for most people. Of course it will need to hit $250/£200 first.
I think this a happy future for Nintendo - their systems will always provide unique experiences from 1st and 2nd parties and indies. Big franchises will always split the difference on Xbone and PS4 and their successors. Nintendo is a small company that can sell at a low cost and still make large profits - I don't mind, long may this continue!
If you think about it, it makes sense that many third parties aren't supporting nintendo hardware as a general rule. Nintendo is a software developer. Consistent the best and most successful games company in history, and the primary competitor for EA, Activision, Ubisoft etc..
In the 80s, NES was the only game in town - if you were a software developer you had to go to them or maybe Atari, or Sega, who also developed their own software
Now there's Sony and Microsoft who mostly make phones, TVs and PCs (not including Windows), they're not trying to sell their own games. Meanwhile some software developers are bigger and richer than Nintendo and don't have to go begging to them to be allowed to distribute their games.
Except for cases like the Wii or the 3DS, where the platforms' runaway successes are irresistible cash cows to developers: WHY WOULD ANY SOFTWARE COMPANY SUPPORT A PLATFORM THAT PROMOTES THEIR BIGGEST RIVAL!!?
Let's get used to the fact that nintendo systems sell nintendo games, and the gaps will be filled by indies, which nintendo is fully supporting, and 2nd parties (there are more and more of them recently)
Another point worth making - Assassins Creed has been a long established franchise on xbox and PS (starting with the woeful first game). Its reputation with gamers has been built up over time. Ubisoft can't honestly expect to introduce a new franchise to a whole new market in two years and expect it to sell the same numbers. This sounds like an excuse to me.
@FullbringIchigo
Mass Effect 3 on Wii U didn't sell because it was the only version of the game where players couldn't bring their previous save games from ME 1&2. For a game that's meant to be played as a trilogy, and where decisions you make influence the outcome in the sequels, it was a lazy and fatal error.
That's disappointing, I had never played an Assassins Creed game until I got AC3 on the Wii U, and am totally hooked. Loved it, and AC4, and will now probably have to buy a PS4 just to play ACU.
He's missing the opportunity to introduce their most popular franchises to new audiences. Repeat: I HAD NO INTEREST IN AC UNTIL IT CAME TO WII U!!
I hope all these Mega Man releases are part of a deal that Nintendo has signed with Capcom, and in return Capcom will become an official 2nd-party developer, do all the legwork of porting Nintendo and third party VC titles from now on, and release HD Wii U exclusive remakes of all the Resident Evils, Street Fighters and Monster Hunter games
@Nico07
We do have Yoshi's Island on the GBA and it used the Super FX chip. And they were able to emulate the custom chips of the N64 (which my macbook still struggles with). I don't know the exact technology but it should fit that it's possible with some effort. Though I agree that Nintendo probably didn't see it as worthwhile.
