We're heading into the most competitive and important sales season of the year, and as a result Nintendo and its rivals will be going all out to convince consumers to splash the cash on their systems and games. Retailers, for their part, will be trying to rapidly clear out old stock and coax gamers to their stores to buy the latest and greatest games on offer.
Super Smash Bros. for Wii U is the key release — along with the amiibo range — for the home console this Holiday season, and some stores are using it as a temptation to flog unwanted white 8GB Wii U systems. Nintendo has been phasing the 8GB model out for over a year and focusing on the 32GB alternative, but the smaller model may just be the affordable way to jump into the Wii U world; considering the fact 32GB is rather small in itself and a hard drive is likely necessary for most regardless, it's a tempting option.
Nintendo UK has used its Wii U Facebook page to highlight one such offer of a Wii U Basic and the new Super Smash Bros., but we've looked around online and found a few other deals, too; these are all established yet smaller online retailers. Some of these deals mean that the actual systems are being valued at less than a standard 3DS; these are all UK deals and prices.

Naturally these are all pre-order deals due to Super Smash Bros. for Wii U not yet being available, but represent some impressive value. It's a bit of a fire-sale in terms of the white 8GB Wii U, yet could tempt more into joining the ranks of gamers that are enjoying the system.

This is why I don't think an official bundle is such a big deal over here in the UK. It seems in the US, everything is sold at a set price, so it's probably decent value, but over here retailers only sell at RRP for the first few weeks and then started slashing prices to move stock. If Nintendo came out with an official Smash bundle it would be £250, but this sort of deal has been going on for the last year, with different games substituted in.
It's also why I'm always negative about the official Nintendo online store. They put together unofficial bundles but just price it up by combining the RRP of all the items and throwing in a 'free' hat or t-shirt.
Are Nintendo definitely phasing out the 8gb model in every territory, or just the US? Because back in the summer when I was looking for a Wii U, all the deals were for the 32gb model, but I really wanted it in white. It seemed the white one was pretty low in stock, but recently it's all over the place again.
Those prices seem about right for RRP. Wii U has been far too expensive for far too long!
I got my 32GB from Amazon for £179.99. Dunno if there was a mistake in pricing by I snapped it up quickly. The following week the price went back up.
the writer touches on 8gig and 32 gig, he is right you do need a hard drive i got a 32 gig and most games are like 16 gig in size, plus you got game saves and netflix and the like so just one download game unlwss you buy the indie games or retro, so i think it's probably more about colour, black or white? what about a silver version nintendo, knowing them they will bring a red one with a pink game pad lol
I've used ShopTo loads and their service is fantastic. I highly recommend them for anyone who hasn't used them before. They also had an incredible Bayonetta bundle, but that's currently out of stock...
Once again 8gigs and 32gigs really isn't that big of a difference. You will be getting a hard drive either way. Besides it's more like 3 gigs and 27gigs after that update.
I'm on the lookout for my sister in law for her son for Christmas, waiting to see if there's anything special on Black Friday, otherwise there are some really good deals out to take advantage of. Thanks for this
It should be no more than £199.99 for the Wii U Premium with Super Smash Bros and New Super Mario Bros. U imo.
That 2nd Zavvi deal is too cheap to pass up!
Ok, question time from me. Are these deals actually worth it? I only just found out the scope of the content on offer via the virtual console, and considering the great games I missed out on by never owning an original Wii, I am now seriously considering picking up a Wii U. However, many articles I've read have strongly advised against going for the 8GB model, due to the fact that system updates alone will use a huge chunk of that space. What's people's thoughts on this issue?
@Spoony_Tech - While you may need an external HDD eventually w/ 32GB, you almost need 1 day 1 for the 8GB since as you point out it really is only about 3 GB free. I think you could fill that up w/ just the updates and DLC on the disc games even if you never buy a digital game. The 27GB at least gives you plenty of room for indies and DLC. I think it would be fine forever if you never buy a retail game digitally. I only hooked up 1 for the 10GB free Disney Infinity and I really regret that decision. (and reading the forums at least 2 other people have had similar problems, so that's 3) 32GB would be fine for a lot of people, but even the most casual of casuals could hit a wall w/ the 8GB probably just from Just Dance songs. As my family members start to find out the Wii U exists - slowly but surely it's finally happening - I will be steering them away from the 8GB model, it's just too small for the OS.
Even if Nintneod doens't slash the MSRP on the Wii U it will need some help form retailers to sell some consoles, X1 has it's $50 drop and Sony will get some bundles. People don't like to buy things w/o incentives, even if it's just free amiibo and gift cards. Nintendo should have made a limited ed SSBU, Gamecube adapter, Gamecube controller and 1 amiibo bundle for $350 for the holidays. That may be a big loss but it would help advertise the system, the new game, the new amiibo and the new adpater all in 1 fell swoop ad or commercial. I think advertising 3 new products in 1 ad is worth the loss.
@SteveButler2210 - I think 8GB is just too small - see above - but if you want to download retail games like Hyrule Warriros, Bayonetta or SSBU then so is 32GB so it won't matter, you'll need an external HDD either way. If you'll never have internet access then I suppose 8GB would be fine, though w/ all the systems updates and DLC I can't imagine bothering w/ a Wii U w/o internet access.
@SteveButler2210 I have a 32 GB model, but mostly due to the included game at the time and it was black (which I prefer over the white). The first thing I did was purchase a 2.5" Sata HDD case (which required no tools) and Y-USB cable for about $20 on Amazon. I then stuck an old 300 GB laptop hard drive into the case and have never really given the matter a second thought again. Even if you don't have the Hard Drive, you can still add your own 250-500 GB drive for about $50-60 via Amazon.
I've come to the conclusion that much like the gamepad complaints, the storage space issue is ultimately little more than an excuse. If Nintendo had put a HDD into the Wii U, people would be throwing fits now that the size of the storage space was too small, if one crashed it was too hard to fix (or God forbid it had to mailed in), or that it was only 5400 RPM vs 10k RPM. Basically, they will just find an excuse to complain because that is what you do online (Disclosure: I sometimes do this myself without stopping to think about it). We never actually look at the freedom not having the HDD included gives you in deciding your own storage fate, just that it makes the console not live up to preconceived expectations.
Why couldn't this deal be offered in America?
@SteveButler2210 like others have said, the memory isn't so important as storage options are varied and cheap.
I bought a 32gb because I like my electronics in black, I even waited for the Wii to be released in black before I bought one as I hate white most of all (I know, sad right). I have poor internet so I have all the updates and download an e shop game every month or so but don't download retail games, I also have every demo on the eshop. i bought my Wii u on launch day and I have only just needed more storage in the last 3 months(even then I could have deleted the demos instead).....my solution? A 32gb memory stick for about £12 from Amazon. JOB DONE! All my demos and updates etc for games I finished on the stick, the important stuff like games and saves on the system memory. Still got about 20-25 gb remaining between the two =)
yay
These prices are not that crazy I got mine with MK8 and NSMBU (32GB) for £200 (Might have been £220).
Nintendo Land is £8-£10 brand new.
Waiting for a decently cheap 32GB over here
@SteveButler2210
Don't be afraid of the white 8GB Wii U. You can usually buy one for MUCH cheaper than the 32GB model (I got my 8GB model for $100) and it's very simple to plug in a hard drive. For me the price difference made it a no-brainer to go with 8GB. It's true that the 8GB model has next to no storage after updates (around 2GB I think), making an HDD a necessity, but I figured that I would be adding an external HDD with either model anyway, so there's nothing lost. 32GB storage (low 20s after OS and updates) isn't really very big anyway. I'm very happy with my white Wii U.
@SteveButler2210 Just pick the one in the colour you like (or the one you can find the best deal on). I have a White 8GB one and it's more than enough room to fit Virtual Console games on. If they make Gamecube games available then they'd eat up the space pretty quick, but it's so cheap to buy a 500GB external drive and plug it in.
Its a good deal! if you're not bothered about downloading games then this a good option, in fact for the price including Wii-U Brawl. If you took brawl out of the pack the Wii U would be about £140 which is really good. Also it plays Wii games so that's also pretty good. I bought a Wii-U the day it came it, I regret buying one now as there are some really good deals out there!
