Last year EA released SimCity on the PC, an ambitious update of Will Wright's genre-defining 1989 original. While it was warmly received by reviewers, it was plagued with online issues relating to the need for an "always on" connection, resulting in many fans branding it a disaster.
It has since come to light that EA was working on a console version which was supposed to launch alongside the PC edition, but it was cancelled in 2011. The news comes from Liam Robertson of Unseen64 — a site which has uncovered the stories behind countless unreleased games. According to Robertson, the project was intended to hit the PS3, 360 and Wii U, but never got beyond the prototype phase.
SimCity started life on computers back in the late '80s, but would come to the attention of console players thanks to the superb SNES version.
Would you have liked to have played a new console-exclusive SimCity, or do you feel the series belongs on PC? Let us know with a comment.

The game pad seems built for these types of games but at this point it either needs to come from Nintendo or Indie cause not much else is being made by 3rd parties.
The Wii had a rather fun version of Sim City. I guess this cancellation on Wii U and all consoles are just yet another part of the "unprecedented support" EA has with Nintendo.
@Shiryu Don't be so quick to shove this on the nonexistent supoort from EA for Nintendo. An X360 and PS3 version were cancelled alongside the WiiU version, so it's more likely that they didn't see it as worth the investment to begin with. After all, each version would've required its own servers, patches, and updates.
it's a real missed opportunity, because if ever a game was made for the gamepad and miiverse, this was it. Especially considering Sim City 64DD is considered the best in the series, I think it would have sold well.
@Kaze_Memaryu I know, I read early that it was canned on all systems (and refer that in my comment). However EA is far from being in my good graces at the moment, and every time I remember their comment on the "support" for Nintendo I can't but recall that meant year copy+paste versions of FIF on Wii and 3DS with updated rosters. Classy!
Sim City died when they took over Maxis
"but...but...but...the third parties really wanted to support the Wii U, it's you Nintendo fans that are the problem"
Wow, this sounds like the sort of game that would do well on a Nintendo platform, but Nintendo isn't willing to subsidize and bend over backwards for EA...so nope! Here's a poor Madden port using an old engine and a full price Mass Effect sequel while the other platforms get the full trilogy remastered!
EA sucks when developing and handling these kind of games anyways, I remember their broken piece of mess game they made back in 2013. Broken servers, unconnectable networks, glitchy gameplay, constant waiting on fix that should had being solve, and lacking customization makes it even more inferior than the 1989 original.
Eh I dunno, I heard even the PC version had problems during launch.
I'll just leave this here showing why I would not have bought it.
Mild language FYI.
and nothing of value was lost
Oh! Sim City?, I miss this game, but well, EA, like many other companies, have been "damaging" its good franchises by the fact survive in this very demanding and changing industry, oh well...
Honestly, I yet to see a new SimCity that is as good as 3000 was. And given 3000 works with no problem on my Windows 7 computer, this news does not bother me at all.
Sim City in HD on the Wii U? Yes, please.
EA/Maxis' new verison of Sim City? No. The latest version on PC was not good.
Meh, only got the PC version as a free bonus from upgrading computer, it's alright...but yeah, don't care about EA anymore.
I am mixed about this. SimCity would be a wonderful fit on the Wii U, but EA botched the game pretty badly at launch.
Good.
Now, don't get me wrong, I love the SimCity franchise. I just hate what EA Has done with it. The current PC version is terrible, and obviously this was going to be a port of that monstrosity.
I wish Will Wright would come back and save his creation. I have so many fond memories of SimCity 2000, 3000, and 4.
I would buy a Sim City for Wii U.
I would pay a high price for an Actraiser for Wii U.
This is exactly the kind of game I think would be perfect for the game pad. I'd 100% buy it day one, unless it had the same ridiculous DRM bullcrap as the PC version (which, come to think of it, would be likely).
That is sad. I didn't buy the new simcity based upon the always online requirement (my internet is terrible) and due to the smaller city size. I would have liked to have played this with the game pad though...even with a smaller city size.
Tried to get into this series back in the day and failed. Same with the Civilization games. Not my cup of tea but I admire them.
I can't believe EA cut off support so early due to just sales, or Origin.
You get the feeling the two companies just no longer get along.
NOOOO!! DANM IT! that would have been fantastic! I love Simcity : (. Now my day really sucks because i was thinking as to when they were going to make simcity for the wii u just the other day. Now I know my dreams will never come true... Well, lets hope they change their mind or make a new one for 3DS.
@MrGawain, If i remember currectly. The WII U wasnt even out in 2011 so sales wasnt the problem. And it has nothing to do with EA's feelings about Nintendo because the PS3 and XBOX 360 versons was also cut.
Damn it! I knew a Sims title would have made it to the Wii U ever since 2011. I hate EA just as much as everyone else for causing this but i admit i would loved to play this. I enjoyed The Sims 3 on 360 and if it did make it to consoles then no one would have to go through that DRM crap
@bubby444 actually that could still be the same reason as in E3 2011 when EA revealed they were supposedly entering a partnership with plans to bring games like Battlefield 4 and a sizzle revealed possibly more like The Sims (of course Harry Potter was also there but that's unimportant). Crisis 3 was going to be on Wii U but EA wouldn't publish it. The lack of a PS3 and 360 port is obviously due to people playing the series more on computers. Of course they would eventually port it to PS4 and X1 but not Wii U
@Shiryu Yeah because of how early it was canned it is likely this is not just a Nintendo EA thing. But EA never has and never will put any effort into developing for the Wii U. The only title they have published worth anything was Criterion's NFS Most Wanted even if it was six months late. I would love for the DLC to become available someday but am not holding my breath. I love SimCity but hate EA, especially with there canning Crysis 3 for Wii U that was ready to ship and other bad ideas in the hopes of profits. Burning your fan base is always a bad idea.
@Mega719 As much as I despise EA, I bought this at launch for PC and was given Most Wanted for PC for free when they bothched the launch and lied that the game required an always on internet connection because PCs just couldn't handle it. I would have also bought this for Wii U if it ever released.
@Nico07 Mass Effect 3 actually was a great port too even if it doesn't have the other games
@Nico07 NFS is amazing, stunning game really. Very glad that Criterion put it on the Wii U. However, and this isvery sad, the latest update randomly crashes the game due to some sort of memory leak, the game just freezes and the Wii U starts screaming like is in pain. I have to unplug it from the power cord, it's the only way to get it responsive again. Very poor customer service right there.
@Mega719 "Mass Effect 3 Special Edition" is indeed an amazing game, but neither Ea or Bioware had nothing to do with it, it was the full responsibility of Straight Right, the same Australina studi oresponsive for the also very impressive "Deus Ex" for Wii U. Those guys know their stuff, I wish more companies would give them game to port for Wii U, I would snap them all up.
It doesnt matter anymore. It just wouldve been nice to have it on the wii u. i guess im just going to half to keep playing simcity DS : (
@Shiryu still an EA game they published for the system. Deus EX Human Revolution is the only SE game on Wii U
Eliminate the online portion and not make me have to deal with other people and I would have purchased it in a heartbeat. I know it's against the grain, but I play games to get away with people. I have to deal with them all day.
And as long as it wouldn't have wound up like the horrid DS versions, which assumed I was 10 years old. Should mention that.
Hmmmm... My purchase of something like this would ride on reviews.
I do think this series belongs on PC, but I certainly would of liked to see how it could turn out on Wii U. If it would of gotten favorable reviews from multiple websites I probably would of given it a try. Probably not at full price though.
I would have bought it.
EA gave up long ago wanting my money.
@Shiryu Only problem with NFS MW is that it runs sub HD on Wii U, still a good port though.
I'd rather have a greatly improved version of the snes game than the crap simcity has been become.
I personally thought Sim City would have been great on Wii U! Its actually one of the titles when it first came out ti thought should have been on there!
Of course...
Varoennauraa
aye,
nobody remembers the classics that are actraiser and the soul blazer trilogy. I'd LOVE to get all the Quintet guys back together and revive this series...
I got the Wii game and it was honestly one of my least favourite games on the system, and I had well over 50 games. So, eh!
or now that i think of it, i can just get the older wii version! HURRAY BACKWARDS COMPATIBILITY!!!!
Sim City on the snes was fun! however when Nintendo announced Wii-U who did they announce as partners EA. It would be nice to have another a sim city game that was good fun. Oh Well never mind.
The Wii U NEEDS a game like this nonetheless. Some kind of title like SImCity or Tropico or RollarCoaster Tycoon. The gamepad is perfect for it.
I would get it if it was a polished version of the city building game that you could play in Playstation Home. That game had a lot of good ideas but the engine for PSHome was so crap that it was pretty clunky. You are the mayor of a new town and you build your town like sim city with parks, water towers, fire departments, housing, roads, etc, but you also get the ability to run around your town like GTA, and you help out the fire department, police force, and even the alien defense force to keep your city safe and profitable.
It was a cool idea, and I'd get a lot of playtime out of it if it were done better.
Damn, so that's what EA's unprecedented support was: Canning games for the Wii U just like all the other consoles.
In 2011 EA where supporting the wii u with a couple of ports this would have been why they considered it. Also launch title games have a high guaranteed sale purely because the launch line is normally only 5-10 titles. It's a nice cash cow if the console sells.
Forget the always-connected nonsense. SimCity would be phenomenal on Wii U.
@redivgamer90
By that logic, they also hate Microsoft and Sony since this cancellation included the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions.
Again, Nintendo fans: Stop being personally offended if a game gets cancelled or goes multi-platform. These companies need to make actual profit on their games, and that's tough on something like the Wii U where sales are painfully low and then worsened by a fanbase notorious for ignoring third party offerings.
In this case, it pretty clearly had nothing to do with the Wii U itself, and was more tied to various internal logistics of the company. SimCity barely functioned when released, which probably didn't help any potential for the console ports.
