Started playing. Game should be great, but makes a bad first impression. Shame they couldn't hit 720p undocked; it looks blurry even on a Switch Lite. And somehow we still have tiny, hard-to-read text on Lite even after it's been out for ages. And after MHW it's surprising to see them go back to 3DS-era pacing that infodumps 40 different mechanics through written tutorial before you've even had a chance to swing a weapon.
I'm sure I'll get used to the resolution and catch up on all the mechanics, but boy is it a rough start.
@EriXz Whatever your computer screen's resolution is, that's the resolution the video plays at. It's extremely unlikely you have an 8k-capable monitor. If your screen is full HD (1080p), which is the most common, then the video plays at the exact same resolution as the original game was in docked mode.
"8K doesn't even look better!!" - a bunch of people who are definitely not watching in 8k.
Seriously, you're not watching an 8k video unless you have a ~$4,000 monitor capable of outputting at that resolution. If it looks different than the BotW you're used to, it's probably because of the lighting.
@Yosher I wish more people had your attitude. Totally understandable to not want to play a sequel if the publisher hasn't given access to the original on the platform you own. Too many folks act like Strikers existing on Switch/PC is a slap in the face. Instead of, you know, a game they can choose not to buy.
@Yanina Yeah...it's tricky with this type of issue. It's certainly understandable the guy would get annoyed after being flooded with the same question or request. But being tenacious to the point of annoyance also seems to be one of the more successful avenues for social change.
The nice thing is that it worked out that way here. It would have been nice if he hadn't been dismissive, and I'm sure the studio would've preferred less bad press. But this is what it took for the story to get big enough for them to take action, so I guess the system kind of works?
@Vsaxo27 You definitely don't just have to just accept it, but it still might be worth trying to understand why it's widely seen as provocative by others. Which is basically because he told people with a disability to shut up and stop asking for a feature that A) they need in order to play the game effectively, and B) could be implemented by the studio if they cared enough not to exclude them.
@Yanina Sure, but accessibility features and home screen icons are not in the same category. Imagine a person using a wheelchair asking their employer to install a ramp so they can get into their office. You could say "nobody would care if it was about changing the color the office is painted", but hopefully you wouldn't. Issues of access are more > aesthetic preferences
@tkdboy1889 Ok so here's the flak...I find it pretty problematic to say something like this isn't "owed" to people based with disabilities. In the US, the ADA mandates accessibility features such as ramps and rails in places of public accommodation. That's a mutual agreement that we owe it to people with disabilities to do what we can to provide access.
There's no law as clear that pertains specifically to gaming (though web accessibility is generally thought to fall under the ADA), but I really hope we can collectively get into the mindset that accessibility features are important. Saying "we'll do it if we feel like it" is very belittling IMO, because he's acting like it's unreasonable for people to expect basic accommodations. Public pressure like this can be the tool to make things better.
For all the folks talking about how it's dumb of Atlus to have bothered with this port at all when P5 isn't on Switch: chill out y'all, let me have this.
In a world where we already had Chrono Trigger and Final Fantasy VI on Switch for two years, this would be a neat little announcement. In the current reality, kinda bewildering.
I'm all for knock-off pokemon games, but you can't just make a fish monster and name it Goldine. Does it evolve into Seekeeng? At that point you may as well go for it and make an electric mouse mascot called Peekachoo.
@Mince This is an article summarizing the contents of one email they wrote to Kotaku. No reason to expect the totality of their reasoning to be included here. My point is that I don't think it's fair to judge them for making the choice that they expect to bring in the most revenue without knowing their financial situation.
@playstation_king They talked to MS, MS showed immediate interest. Maybe they talked to Sony and Sony showed less interest. Maybe they didn't bother because early conversations with MS led them to believe they wouldn't need to. Dude probably wouldn't go out of his way to say "Sony didn't care about our game" or whatever.
As for them losing money...it's a good rule of thumb to assume that people won't make decisions that are against their own interests. Either the down payment they get for game pass is bigger than what they projected to earn on PS, or they decided to prioritize the guaranteed money over the potential earnings. We know none of the numbers here - I&F does.
@Mince SteamWorld Quest was a Switch console exclusive and apparently it didn't make that much money. At the end of the day, I'd rather I&F maintain financial security with Microsoft's money than risk collapsing or having to lay off artists and developers.
@playstation_king Read more closely. He said they went decided to go to the powerful console makers and that they had "a bit of discussion back and forth". That's the part where Microsoft promises to pay them for game pass and console exclusivity. There's no BS; the whole story is right there.
Sony won the last generation handily because they just had more & better exclusives. I can't fault MS for trying to compete. At least they're being more open than Sony by making all their console exclusives available on PC.
@Tstar I'm playing on the latest patch. Menu is still very slow and there's very noticeable frame drops in busier areas. Not sure it's better than it was before, but it's still there. Nothing unplayable though, just a little annoying from time to time.
@korosanbo It probably depends on the size and health of the studio. If a studio is counting on revenue coming in at a certain point to keep things going, it must be really hard to say "nah, we can wait another couple months before earning any money". Obviously studios like Naughty Dog and CD Projeckt Red are going to be more stable and know they're making millions whenever the game drops, so there's more incentive to take time to get it exactly right on day 1. Just a guess - I'm sure there's tons of good reasons why different studios handle things differently.
@JR150 I hope there's something too. SMTIV and its sequel were so good. As great as Persona is, there's also something special about the vanilla SMT format that I hope will get more attention. Between Royal and P4G PC being released recently, Atlus has a chance to convert a lot of new Persona fans into SMT fans.
@RPGamer I think at this point the main thing I notice is some ill-advised accent work. I know they're probably thinking "Hey I'll do a funny voice!" and not "hey I'll do a an ethnic stereotype", but yeah...
@Random-User I appreciate the response. FWIW, I really don't detest the guy. I was a fan a decade ago when he was an up-and-comer playing Amnesia: The Dark Descent mods. He's done some dumb stuff since then, but I don't hate him for it. I'm neither a fan nor trying to get him cancelled, so my opinion on him now doesn't really matter.
I wrote what I did because I think it's understandable that Pewdie being featured would be a con for some people, and I because I found it ironic that some folks were so offended about the "Pewdiepie is a con" joke in the review on behalf of someone who famously trafficked in some truly offensive attempts at humor.
Basically, I find it frustrating when people are more angry about an offhand remark in a video game review than they are at racism. If Pewdie has grown in the last few years, that's awesome. If you're a fan, it's not my goal try and convince you that you shouldn't be. I watch Game Grumps, and God knows they've said some problematic stuff in the past.
"Pewdiepie shouts a racial slur on stream and nobody bats an eye. "
:insert nurse Joker:
"NL lists him as a potential con and everybody loses their mind."
@Ooccoo_Jr The game is really only as grindy as you want it to be. In BL2, for example, each boss has a unique legendary gun with a low chance of dropping. You could fight them over and over to get every drop (and some people do), but this is in no way necessary.
Think of the "looter" element as this - enemies drop guns and you can buy guns, so you're frequently finding better equipment as you play. Sometimes you'll have something cool and overpowered for a few levels, sometimes not. Fun either way.
This kind of game is such a tough call if you have a decent PC and a Switch. PC will have much better visuals, frame rate, controls, loading time, etc etc.....but I'm a lot more likely to play it for 40+ hours on a handheld.
Yeesh. I was excited for this, but not sure I want play a game on Switch Lite with sub-PS Vita resolution. I get why Witcher's lower res - it's a port of a game made for more powerful hardware. I don't get why a high-profile Switch exclusive can't do better than 540/30fps. Something else should have been dialed back.
I'll take literally any Switch announcement from Atlus. Phantom Strikers localization, Persona 3/4/5 port, SMT5, an SMT spin-off, Etrian Odyssey, Trauma Center. It's crazy how little they're done on Switch after supporting 3DS so heavily for years. Here's hoping Catherine was the first of many games incoming.
It really is a shame. I love Smash, but it really doesn't have much of interest to offer if you can't play with a room full of friends. I still can't understand how online worked better for Smash on 3DS...
Since the first Rogue Legacy, there have been roughly 500,000 indie roguelikes, most not nearly as fun. Fast runs, meaningful progression, and little to no chance of wasting a 40-minute run due to one bad instance of RNG.
@clvr It's not that crazy. Some people own both a PS4 and Switch. They played Persona on PS4, but prefer playing on Switch when possible. It's on Switch for those people, or people who are curious about the style of game but don't care that much about story.
@patbacknitro18 You'd think that, but nah. Full-fledged sequel. Combination of old characters and new, same world, set after the events of the first game.
@Mr_Muscle The PS4 version has been out for 4 years and launched at $60. The Switch version only exists because a ton of work was put into porting the game to a weaker platform. That work is what you're paying for.

Let's all take a moment to imagine what detective pikachu would've looked like if they had stretched out his torso the way they did for poor ole Sonic.
Why do we want to make furry little mascots more human?
@Realnoize Haha forgive the tone. I was just surprised how many people were pushing the day one thing. I agree that it's annoying how many editions come out and it sucks when important pieces of the game are held back to be sold separately.
That said, I don't think the guilt by association thing is fair either. Whenever something like this is announced, the go-to response (not yours so much, but you see it a lot in the comments) is to call the devs greedy scum and the game incomplete, regardless of whether either is true. That rush to judgment is what I find frustrating - just because the shady practice exists doesn't mean it applies to all games with dlc.
