Re: Persona Q2: New Cinema Labyrinth Will Have A Whopping 27 Pieces Of DLC At Launch

turntSNACO

@Realnoize @Heavyarms55 @nintendolie Y'all, this game is coming west over 6 months after it launched in Japan. There's no day 1 DLC - it's day 180 DLC.

As it turns out, it takes less time to upload kaguya.jpg than it does to translate all the dialogue in a 40+ hour game. The DLC was finished long before the localization - would it make you feel better if they had sat on it for a few weeks so it wasn't "day one"? Or should we be entitled to get it for free even though Japanese players didn't?

As others have pointed out, most of this stuff is designed to make the game easier (even though these games are well-balanced without them) - they're not essential content! If anything, they have potential to screw up the original intended experience. Just don't buy them. There's already around 225 personas in the game not counting dlc, about 40 more than PQ1. And let's be real - nobody would have complained that the base game needed 15 more to be a "complete game" if not for this announcement. Just don't buy. Problem solved.

Re: Rumour: Switch Lite To Retain Docking Ability, Nintendo Still 'Experimenting' With More Powerful Model

turntSNACO

For folks with a PS4 or a strong PC, the Switch's portability is already its strongest selling point. I'm glad they're doubling down on this aspect for new models first. A powered-up Switch is still likely to be outdone by PS4, definitely by PS5. No need to try and compete in the arms race - better to wait until the current model starts to show its age, then bump the power to keep it modern.

Re: What Happens If You Mix Zelda And Bloodborne? Hunt The Night Hopes To Find Out On Switch

turntSNACO

@dux I feel you, but I don't necessarily think "lazy" is a fair way to describe it. That sort of implies that they have the artistic and technical expertise to make something more special, but didn't care enough to expend the time or effort. More likely, it's a small team that doesn't have the talent on board to make a Gris or Hollow Knight. If this is the only style of game they're able to make, I can't fault them for trying to make it.

Re: The English Translation of Super Mario RPG Cut Many Japanese Pop References

turntSNACO

@edhe Thanks for responding. Leaving out what Japan does with stuff that stays in Japan, which I won't comment on, I guess I don't understand why the line between censorship and localization is hugely important. Like, if during localization a developer removes a half-naked image of a preteen character that was only ever in there as fanservice anyway, I'm not sure that we've lost anything of importance. If you disagree in an example like, I'd be interested to know why.

I feel like Sony, like Steam before it, don't always get the distinction between underage and over. Most social justice-friendly gaming sites tend to be pretty sex positive as long as it's adults being depicted.

Re: Rumour: Joker's Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Stage Seemingly Datamined

turntSNACO

@Lizuka It's tough - Mementos is probably the most important single area, but also the least interesting visually (unless they do use late-game Mementos). I feel like the best scenario would be some kind of transforming state, a la Pokemon Stadium, that switches between Shibuya and different parts of the Metaverse. But that would be a pretty big ask.

I'm more interested in what they do with Joker's moveset. My guess is his specials will each summon a different persona, maybe to use the 4 different elemental spells like Robin. I'm just not sure who is iconic enough to be included, apart from Jack Frost.

Re: Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story + Bowser Jr.'s Journey Is One Of The Worst-Selling Mario Games To Date

turntSNACO

I put 10ish hours into the Superstar Saga remake and it just didn't click for me. I'm still up for buying more 3DS games (and will definitely get both of Atlus's 2019 releases this year), but the ports Nintendo is choosing to release don't appeal.

The New 3DS was such a wasted opportunity. So many SNES VC games and ports left on the table. Xenoblade was such a great tease of what the upgrade could bring, then they never took advantage of its upgraded power again.

Re: Review: Etrian Odyssey Nexus - A Stellar Send-Off For A Beloved RPG Series

turntSNACO

@BulbasaurusRex I did say it was king "in my book". I can appreciate that manual mapping and limited story are negatives for you. They're positives for me. It's not bad game design just because it doesn't appeal to you. I'll happily discuss why I think manual mapping is a good design choice if you'd like, but for now I'll say that you and I simply want different things out the genre and that's ok!

Re: Review: Etrian Odyssey Nexus - A Stellar Send-Off For A Beloved RPG Series

turntSNACO

So excited to be getting one more, especially one with such replay potential from all those classes! The genre isn't for everyone, but EO is the unquestioned king of the genre in my book (and second place isn't particularly close). And there will probably never be another system as well-suited for these games as the 3DS. That's what makes the series special.

Re: Persona Q2: New Cinema Labyrinth Officially Confirmed For The West, Premium Edition Detailed

turntSNACO

Great news! Between this and the upcoming PS4 announcement, lots more P5 coming up in 2019.

@jly1987 tbh it wouldn't work nearly as well on Switch. All Etrian games are pretty reliant on the dual-screen setup, since you're constantly adding to the map on the touchscreen while exploring. I'd love to have this in HD, but it would either have to have an insanely cluttered UI or abandon the core gameplay mechanic of the series.

Re: Review: Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story + Bowser Jr.'s Journey - A Worthy Remaster Of An RPG Classic

turntSNACO

The lack of 3D really bugged me in the Superstar Saga remaster - so many platforming sections early on that would have benefitted tremendously from 3D. Not knowing if the ledge you're going for is on the same plane as you is so frustrating, especially when you're playing on the one system in the world that has exactly the technology to prevent this happening.

It doesn't bother me when games like Radiant Historia remaster don't have 3D, but this series is one where the actual gameplay would really benefit from the feature. As is, they feel like incomplete remasters.

Re: Persona 5 Switch Rumours Intensify

turntSNACO

@macalao914 Well-said. I'll just add for others that the "cat makes you go to bed" is something that happens a lot early, but less once you get into the swing of the game. The game does this for balance reasons - Persona has always been about making the player use their time efficiently to grow stats and social links. If all the nights you go to bed early were turned into free time, it would take a lot of the challenge out of the game.

FWIW, I was able to see nearly everything the game had to offer in my first playthrough without meticulously planning my free time for maximum efficiency. As long as you invest a little effort into making good decisions, you should find that the game gives you enough opportunities even with the forced bedtimes. When you see it from that perspective, you realize that losing some nights isn't such a big deal.

Re: Persona 5 Switch Rumours Intensify

turntSNACO

@Preposterous Why would I buy Xenoblade when I've got a perfectly good copy of Inazuma Eleven on 3ds. Both are anime-inspired rpgs, after all. Sure, one is an epic fantasy action game while the other is children playing soccer, but we're just splitting hairs at this point.

Joking aside, I'm only salty because I'm a big Persona fan. I finished it this week and it's an instant all-time favorite. If you're someone who doesn't mind a ton of dialogue in games, I highly recommend checking it out when/if it makes it to Switch.

Re: Persona 5 Switch Rumours Intensify

turntSNACO

@Preposterous It's not a given because it's a game developed exclusively for Playstation. Always nice when those games become available on Switch, but it's not like we can take it for granted. And idk, it feels like you only bring up Xenoblade 2 out of brand loyalty, not because the games are anything alike. Kind of like an Xbox fan saying "who needs Bloodborne, I've got Sunset Overdrive."

Re: Overwatch Director Says Blizzard Is "Very Open-Minded" About Switch Release

turntSNACO

@DenDen It may down from its peak active player base a year or so ago, but there's still millions of people playing regularly. Queue times are still low (outside of the highest rank), and it'll still take years at a minimum for that to change. Lots of people play when there's hype, then eventually numbers fall away to just those who really enjoy playing long-term. Doesn't mean a game is dying.

Re: Nintendo Will Remove Smash Bros. Ultimate's Offensive Depiction Of Native Americans

turntSNACO

@roadrunner343 I get where you're coming from. I'm not trying to say that all non-affected people should shut up completely (here I am running my mouth off after all). But I do think the opinions of Native Americans should be weighed higher than mine or yours when it comes to questions like this.

In surveys on race relations in the U.S., white people always think that racism isn't as big of a problem as black people do. Are both opinions equally valuable in assessing reality, or do we accept that black people might have a little more info re: the black experience? That's sorta where I'm coming from on this.

Re: Epic Says Jiggle Physics Included In Latest Fortnite Update Were "Unintended"

turntSNACO

@KayFiOS Can't speak to the animation side of it, but there's a good comment chain on the Kotaku article where people who know more than me discuss how this could've been accidental. Maybe they're wrong, I can't say either way.

From Epic's PR standpoint, the game's player base obviously includes a lot of children. I'd imagine they wouldn't like the optics of been seen to include sexual content aimed at said children. Whether this qualifies as sexual content is a whole other discussion of course, but Epic doesn't need a bunch of parents reading articles about Fortnite trying to be sexy (whether it's true or not). "Ignore the 12-year-olds" is not a sound business strategy when those 12-year-olds are why you're making money.

Mainly the point I want to make is that there are other explanations besides "triggered" twitter activists or whatever. Something like this doesn't have to be a battle line in the gaming culture war.

Re: Epic Says Jiggle Physics Included In Latest Fortnite Update Were "Unintended"

turntSNACO

@KayFiOS Did people complain? It's not in the article, and most people in the twitter thread seemed pretty on board with the update. Maybe we're missing some large-scale reaction that isn't covered here (please tell me if this is the case), but it seems like the emote got attention and then Epic stated their intentions to change it.

So who got 'triggered'? Isn't it possible Epic just made their choice and we should respect that?

Re: NES Games On Switch Playable For Up To Seven Days Without Internet Connection

turntSNACO

@PanurgeJr Lots of hotels I've been to require you to use your browser to complete wifi login, so I'm not sure it'll work on a console. It's certainly an added inconvenience for long trips to have to set up wifi on another device (if possible) just to avoid losing your nes games.

The xbox plan was certainly worse, but it's also important to distinguish that the xb1 was entirely a home console while the Switch can travel. If the Switch were an 8 pound box that had to be plugged into the tv, I wouldn't mind this at all since it's unlikely I'd be without wifi at home for that long. But for the console that was designed with portability in mind, this is an issue. Especially when, as mentioned above, they could have handled this in a more customer-friendly way.

Re: Soapbox: Why I Prefer Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate To World

turntSNACO

I understand the point of view, but I kinda cringe at language like: "...for those that really get Monster Hunter there really is no competition..."

The implication is that people who prefer MHW don't appreciate the series the "right" way. Fandoms get unpleasant when longtime members start telling new fans that they're not doing it right, or that they don't really understand it like we do.

The Souls series in a helpful analogue. My favorite game in the series is Bloodborne. It has much faster, more fluid combat and allows for more combos than the first Dark Souls, where attacks take a bigger percentage of stamina and movement can be more deliberate. The fact that I prefer BB doesn't mean that I "don't get" DS1. I understand both and happen to prefer the more recent entry.

Let people who like World better do the same without getting called out.

Re: Etrian Odyssey Nexus Announced For Nintendo 3DS In The West, Available February 2019

turntSNACO

@JoakimZ Yes. To be more specific about IV/V, IV has overworld map sections where you pilot an airship to get between different labyrinths and pick up food/interact with other airships/solve environmental puzzles to get places.

V just has one extended labyrinth that you continually chip away it. The environment changes every 5 floors, so it's still diverse and interesting, and all the side quests take place on one of these floors rather than in stand-alone dungeons. The advantage is that the loop in V is just 'explore dungeon -> manage items and quests in town -> repeat'. You can automatically return to any floor you've fully explored in the past, so no time is spent on going from place to place.

Re: Etrian Odyssey Nexus Announced For Nintendo 3DS In The West, Available February 2019

turntSNACO

@JoakimZ I'd recommend EOV (which I believe is also on sale in NA at the moment). It strips out a lot of the extraneous stuff that slowed down IV. It'll give you the best idea of what the series is all about and has some really cool classes, but it's not like the others will be unplayable by comparison - just different.

That said, you might consider one of the Untold games if you're concerned about getting invested in an RPG that has silent player-characters and very little plot. They have the option to have a greater focus on pre-written characters.

And if you've played Persona 3 or 4, Persona Q is the easy choice. It's the most polished and has the best puzzles IMO, but don't know how interesting it would be for someone who didn't know the characters.

Re: Motion Twin Apologises For Frame Rate Drops In Switch Version Of Dead Cells

turntSNACO

@Rika_Yoshitake I'm with the majority of people commenting here who have actually played it: the game is totally playable with only occasional issues and I'm glad they released it rather than delay it. You want them to apologize for performance dips on release? Encourage people not to buy it on Switch?

That's not how this works. Read reviews. Find other users' experiences online and use them to decide if it's worth it for you. Don't call a small team of devs "scumbags" because they didn't achieve perfect performance, something even large AAA teams often struggle to do.

Re: Review: Salt and Sanctuary (Switch eShop)

turntSNACO

@gcunit Honestly the map is the sole reason I don't love this game. Having multiple gated areas that you can't keep track of to find later is frustrating. Plus the game is so open that after a certain point it becomes difficult to even google where to go next when you get lost.

As the reviewer said, Dark Souls doesn't need a map because it's a 3D game with memorable, visually distinct areas. I'm convinced Salt's devs didn't do a map just because they wanted it to be like Dark Souls, not because it makes sense for the game they were making.

Re: Review: Salt and Sanctuary (Switch eShop)

turntSNACO

@Denoloco It's worth keeping in mind that it came out on Steam over 2 years ago, before a bunch of other (often better, imo) Souls-inspired 2D games came out. Obviously doesn't make the game worse, but it's a harder rec in a world where Hollow Knight exists.

Re: Review: Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana (Switch)

turntSNACO

@bratzdoll It depends on what you value in an RPG. I'd say it's more a different style rather than a different class. What it does, it does really well. Exploration and combat were fun throughout, and it's paced in such a way that you're never stuck in a cut-scene for too long. When I played on vita, it hooked me in a way that few games do these days. That said, I'm analyzing the value at the <$25 price I paid. Nearly triple the price to get the little bit of content not on vita seems...excessive.

Re: Atlus Insists It Is Still "Hard At Work" On Persona Q2 For Nintendo 3DS

turntSNACO

@McGruber If you know anything about Etrian Odyssey, you have a good starting point for PersonaQ. Grid-based dungeons for exploring and puzzle-solving, challenging turn-based combat. Where PQ shines for me (compared to EOIV/V), is the characters. The characters have a lot of personality and are given a lot of time to interact. Fantastic voice acting as well! There's also a heavier focus on environmental puzzles - they really do a great job of breaking up the standard action with fun side quests.

The only downside for you is that the game is primarily aimed at existing Persona fans. So there's in-jokes and references to previous games. If that bothers you, it's worth trying to seek out the mainline games first - they're great! But honestly I think there's still a lot to enjoy without that backgrounds (and they seem to be good about avoiding spoilers).
