As a celebration of the SaGa series’ 30th anniversary, the first three Game Boy games are headed to Nintendo Switch this December in a bumper 8-bit collection.
Collection of SaGa Final Fantasy Legend features the classic Game Boy trilogy that first launched in Japan in 1989, before getting rebranded in the West the following year due to Final Fantasy's popularity. The long-running and idiosyncratic SaGa series went on to great things across platforms, but it all started on the humble Game Boy, and now's your chance to catch up if you missed out thirty years ago.
Touted as the "first complete port" of these games, the collection launches on 15th December and there will be a host of features according to the official description on Nintendo's website. Check out the game in action in the timestamped Direct video above, or scroll down for some screens and a list of features:
The collection includes new enhancements like high-speed mode as well as features unique to the Nintendo Switch™, such as adjustable screen magnification and game screen background customization. Featuring compatibility with, of course, handheld mode, but also with TV mode and tabletop mode. Furthermore, this game also revives the nostalgia of playing the original by enabling vertical usage of the console after removing the Joy-Cons. Take your collection on the go with handheld mode, share your journey with your Nintendo Switch in TV mode, or remove the Joy-Cons and turn your Nintendo Switch vertically for a retro Game Boy experience.
The game is up for pre-purchase right now on Nintendo's website and will set you back $19.99. Apparently, the file size comes in at a very reasonable 219 MB, so this one won't break the memory bank, at least.
The games featured on our list of the Top 50 Game Boy games, so it's a treat to see them getting new life on Switch. Let us know below if you'll be adding this collection to your collection.

This was by far the best announcement from the direct, and that’s saying something 😂 I can’t believe Nintendo.
I have no interest in the Final Fantasy series, but I love, love, love Game Boy games. I'll give this a look if there's a physical release at some point, but the likely asking price of AU$30 for three Game Boy ROMs is too expensive for a mere download.
I'm completely floored that this game is getting a Switch release. I've only played the original, but it was also one of the very first Gameboy games I played.
I'd love to give this another spin after... jeeze... 25 years!?
I'll get it if there's a physical edition, otherwise no thanks.
The best announcement of the Direct and it’s literally Game Boy games. Nintendo, ladies and gentlemen.
Highlight of the showcase for me. Its sad to say but its true. 3 GB games shouldn't have been the highlight for me but thats what happened lol
Still hoping we get a Final Fantasy 1-6 collection one day for the Switch.
Kind of a shame they can't include localization of the WonderSwan port of the 1st, or the DS ports of the 2nd and 3rd.
Cool, will be getting this one for sure.
Though as someone said, it's kind of embarrassing that the highlight of a nintendo direct was literally a gameboy port.
@nessisonett They're not even Nintendo games so not really fair to blame them for third parties being mediocre...
I think I'll pick this one up.
I can already hear that FFL3 battle theme playing in my head.
Oh my god, I just paid over the odds for the 1st one last month. Hopefully I can get a decent resale value
Where’s saga frontier?
@Silly_G SaGa is very, -very- different from Final Fantasy. In this collection, only SaGa 3/FF Legend 3 plays even remotely close to one, and it was developed by a different team from SaGa's usual.
Also, time to relive the memory of putting an end to a crime ring smuggling that most evil of drugs — BANANAS! https://legendsoflocalization.com/were-the-bananas-in-final-fantasy-legend-ii-actually-drugs/
@Desrever Same here, it's been a LONG time since I've played that first one. I got it with my first Game Boy (a red pocket version) way back in the late 90s.
Not gonna lie, if they added Final Fantasy Mystic Quest (otherwise known as Mystic Quest Legend) to this I might have gone for it. I know that game isn't the most amazing RPG by any means but I have pretty deep nostalgia for it for being my first ever RPG and having a pretty killer soundtrack.
As it is though- I'll probably pass. Can't justify 20 bucks for this, sorry.
This has got to be the most ugly version ever. uke
Please, give us a physical release! I have one of the games, FFL3, on the original GB, but would be awesome to have all three of them in my Switch collection.
I've still got them, and hated them then too, so no thanks
That's cool, I guess. I do like seeing old and largely forgotten games like these get some love.
In a world where we already had Chrono Trigger and Final Fantasy VI on Switch for two years, this would be a neat little announcement. In the current reality, kinda bewildering.
So excited by this! I still have a few of these cartridges on standby, Day One purchase.
I still have a couple of these sitting in my house.
While neat, kind of disappointing they didn't try to remaster the games at all.
Loved these as a kid, still excited to pick them up again years later. Looks good to me.
@Cevil I'm still waiting for physical releases for VII, VIII & IX.
@shinesprites maybe thats what they are going for haha, it is a tad ridiculous. Since i could, if i wanted, just play these on an emulator on my phone, but im to busy with DQM:J2 at the moment on my magical do-it-all handheld computing device. Much more worthy of my time.
@FX29 Oh goodness, I didn't realize how much I wanted that until you mentioned it. The battery in my cartridge of Final Fantasy II (IV) died, and I still haven't beaten it to this day. I'd happily pay for a (legal) chance to play it in something close to its original form (ie, not the DS remake.)
So many largely forgotten gems in the Square catalog from the 80s and 90s. While I can't say I was begging for these particular games, I'll probably get them anyways as long as they're decent ports.
Now I'm going to go and daydream about a "Square in the SNES Era" collection that includes some of their oddball one-offs like "Secret of Evermore" and "Bahamut Lagoon."
Meh, I'd rather have a Dissidia Duodecium announcement.
I'm not impressed if they're only bringing the game boy originals and not the japan exclusive DS remakes...
@Sondheimist Even better, "Enix in the SNES Era". ActRaiser 1 & 2, Soul Blazer, Illusion of Gaia, Terranigma, Robotrek, EVO: Search for Eden, Brain Lord... 7th Saga if they patch its insane difficulty...
Instead of just giving us a lazy collection of Game Boy roms, how bout also giving us the DS remakes of these games. Translate SaGa 2 & 3 and remake SaGa 1 then bundle them with these too. Aren't anyone working at Square Enix even knows how to make games anymore?
I can’t believe no one mentioned you can play this with the Flip Grip! I’m stoked!
Isn't the first one already included in Collection of Mana?
If it weren't, I'd definitely buy this collection, but physical, as the other one got the retail treatment eventually and in this case it shouldn't be different.
To anyone complaining about the art on the SaGa Collection:
That is, in fact, the original box art in all of its..."glory"...
And i really hope there's an option to disable that hideous and "totally not just a mobile port" on screen control thingy...
That said, i'm a sucker for collections like this, so i'm in.
Looking forward to getting frustrated by SaGa's RNG BS
@Sabrewing If you look into it, 7th Saga isn't just more difficult than Elnard, its original Japanese release, it's flat out broken in parts.
Personal highlight: If the healer character decides to become your rival and gets their hands on one of the McGuffins after a certain level, the game becomes softlocked because they're unbeatable in combat (Full heal at no MP cost).
The localisation team wrecked absolute havoc on the games stats .
@Moroboshi876 No: That game was Seiken Densetsu 1 (Secret of Mana 0)
These games are part of the SaGa series; entirely different. The SaGa series inspired games like Octopath Traveler, in that the games use a rather vague frame narrative style and you can pick which side of the story (usually pertaining to one of the characters) to advance at any given time... well that’s what the later ones offered anyway. The Gameboy ones allow you to choose your party from a variety of different classes (kind of like the Jobs of Final Fantasy). The combat overall is very similar to Final Fantasy though.
Nobuo Uematsu also scored the first game, and the soundtrack is truly wonderful.
@Moroboshi876 Nope, it isn't.
SaGa 1 was localized as "Final Fantasy Legend" in the US.
The GameBoy game in the Mana Collection, Seiken Densetsu, was localized as "Final Fantasy Adventure" in the US and "Mystic Quest" in Europe.
Two completely different games ^^
@Moroboshi876 That's Final Fantasy Adventure which is part of the Seiken Densetsu / Mana series. These are part of the SaGa series which is completely different.
Thanks, guys. I can see now that the difference is in the "Adventure/Legend" part. That was what I got wrong.
@shinesprites
Why are there touch controls... on a portable console... that has controllers attached to the sides of it and docks to the TV
Because you can now play them without the joycons. I assume that the touch controls are removed when the joycons are attached, or there is a option to turn them off when the joycons are attached.
Unexpected but welcome
@Einherjar At least the rumor that Valsu can cast Elixir if his enemy self reaches the appropriate level is untrue. That would be TOTAL <expletive>.
Honestly this is the kinda release I bought my Switch for.
Not being ironic here.
When it comes to Game Boy games, the rereleases never seem to include the GBC colour palette options. It always makes me want the original GB carts instead.
$20 You must be kidding!!
I love that Square is giving us some deep cuts like this and bringing over some games to the west for the first time (SD3, Romancing Saga 3). It's not Digital Eclipse level of preservation/extras quality, but it's a total welcome surprise we are getting these at all. Hoping for a physical release.
Like others, I am baffled that some of SE's classics are absent from the Switch, but hoping it is a matter of time. This year is Chrono Trigger's 25th anniversary, so it would've been perfect timing to bring it to Switch. I assume that it's because this and Super Mario RPG are getting full blown remakes
The only concern is that a physical release may happen and I would rather have that as I already have the Collection of Mana.
I hope it gets a physical release. I sold my boxed copies of FFL and FFL2 earlier this year and I’m starting to regret it!
@AllieKitsune I was just about to say the same thing.
I had these as a kid. I will be getting this.
Count me in. I plan to get the new GB Final Fantasy and Kingdom Hearts.
Will depend on the price if I will get this or not
I've never played these (or SaGa period), but now I'm intrigued. If these go on a good sale or get a physical release, I'm down.
@EarthboundBenjy Oh good point!
I'll pick this up when it eventually goes on sale. I owned all these, but never succeeded in beating the second one. It just required more grinding or willingness to place characters I didn't care for.
Nice. FF Legend is a an often forgotten Uematsu-composed classic.
The first FF Legend is what made me fall in love with handheld gaming. It was the first game I ever played that allowed saving any time, anywhere. Pretty much set the stage for my gaming preferences ever since...so this is great news.
I half want this only to show interest in more Game Boy games coming to Switch. I have way more nostalgia for GB, GBC, and GBA than NES, SNES, and N64.
I think this is cool, and hope it means that the NES and SNES Final Fantasy games will come to Switch soon.
The soundtrack for FFL2 is incredible, probably my favorite GB soundtrack of all time. I would love to see official localizations of the DS remakes though, that’s long been a dream of mine.

Here are some awesome songs from the series:
SaGa 1 and 3 title theme (classic Nobuo Uematsu):

SaGa 2 Heartful Tears (Uematsu)

SaGa 2 Never Give Up (Kenji Ito):

SaGa 2 Battle theme:

The music in this series is shockingly good, considering the limited hardware.
20 bucks? lol ...the collection is worth 5 dollars/euros at most
@BlackenedHalo You don't get three Game Boy games for $5. Especially not three RPGs. Especially not from Square Enix. And especially not on the Switch.
But feel free to wait for a sale.
@retro_player_77 looking at the complete botch job they made of FF Crystal chronicles, I honestly believe all of Squares talent is making the remake for FF VII part 2. Either that or they've left.
