Cellar Door Games has revealed that a sequel to roguelike action platformer Rogue Legacy is now in development.
The announcement began on 1st April when the following tease appeared on social media. At the time, it wasn't exactly clear whether or not the tweet was actually an April Fools' prank.
Thankfully, that turned out not to be the case, as a follow-up message confirmed that yes, it really is happening after all. Fans of the original will immediately notice a graphical overhaul, with new screenshots revealing a new hand-drawn aesthetic which we'd argue is much more visually appealing that the retro style employed previously.
It's sure to be one to keep an eye on, especially with how good the first game was when it launched on Switch back in 2018. If you missed out on that first release, make sure to read our full review to see why you should probably give it a whirl. We'll leave a snippet for you below:
Rogue Legacy is a simple take on the tried-and-true roguelike formula, but it executes what it sets out to do exceptionally well, making for an endlessly replayable and enjoyable action adventure that no fan of the genre will want to miss out on. A high difficulty level, funny writing, tight controls and rewarding RPG mechanics make this one an effortless recommendation; the design of the game makes it easy to play in short bursts or long sessions, which means it's a great fit for the Switch. If you enjoyed Dead Cells, Castlevania, or any 2D sidescroller in that style, you’re almost certain to have a blast with this one.
Specific platforms haven't been revealed just yet, but we'd be very surprised if the new game didn't end up on Switch. We'll keep an eye out for more news on Rogue Legacy 2 as it appears.

Like I said on pushsquare. I rarely get hyped for games, let alone indies, but this does hype me. Put so many hours into it in Psvita.
This is amazing news! Absolutely loved the first one!
Yay, I loved the first part on PSVita
Since the first Rogue Legacy, there have been roughly 500,000 indie roguelikes, most not nearly as fun. Fast runs, meaningful progression, and little to no chance of wasting a 40-minute run due to one bad instance of RNG.
"Castlevania-Like Platformer Rogue Legacy"
What bloody Castlevania games have you been playing?
Just bought the original off the South African Eshop for £1.55. I didn't know it was so highly praised.
That looks totes adorbs!
The first one was a blast, looking very much forward to this!
This is great! Rogue Legacy was one of the very few roguelikes I actually loved.
@carlos82 Have you played Rogue Legacy? It definitely has a Castlevania vibe to it. Of course it doesn't play exactly like one, but there's definitely similarities. Either way, hyped for this game, the first was amazing.
@roadrunner343 yeah I had quite a bit of fun with it, never felt like any Castlevania game though
@carlos82 Fair enough - to each their own. For me, it was mainly the setting (Not so much the art style) and the types of weapons that reminded me of some of the older Castlevania games. It's still very much it's own thing, and to this day, probably my favorite "Metroidvania" style Roguelike - quite a bit for fun to me even than Dead Cells.
They've actually been working on this for a while...even asked their fans if "early access" was a release avenue we'd want. I sure don't, and I guess that must've been the majority response if this announcement didn't mention it.
Oh sweet, I loved the first Rogue Legacy. The graphical update looks good. It resembles the Wonder Boy: Dragon's Trap remake a lot.
Rogue Legacy was one of the few rogue-like games I actually enjoyed. It was just done right. A sequel is wonderful news. I wouldn't personally call the new look 'better', just different, but it's nice.
it's not that fun to be honest.. there isn't really a meny. You just pause and you do have a map.. but very limited information. It's not like Castlevania symphony of the night with full status information. I stopped playing after 5 minutes. That's how bad the impression it made on me
You say here that rogue was first released on switch in 2018...
Super duper wrong. I played it on ps3 years ago. Lets use proper information now, this is your job. Smh
@alucard83
It's not supposed to give you a bunch of info. It's a rogue runner. You don't really need the map anyways and idk what you're playing on but when I played there was a map on the bottom. If you don't like it who cares why'd you feel like commenting just to display your distaste?
@Finalscourge English is hard. If I asked you the question, when was Rogue Legacy first released on Switch? Your answer might be: "It was first released on Switch in 2018."
I wouldn't nitpick it too much.
The first is good, but has absolutely nothing to do with Castlevania or Metroidvanias in general.
Stop confusing people with forced comparisons, NL.
Instead of riding off of the success of another game these people should just make something original.
@carlos82 I would love an actual Castlevania Rogue like.
