Yeh I like the style, albeit the length of development time still fascinates me.... I'd love to be a fly on the wall 'behind the scenes' just to understand what took so long? I'm delighted it’s finally here, and it will be a day 1 for me - but my mind is blown that the development years are pretty much the same as Baldurs 3!

it’s a core dev team of just 4 people. Roughly 2 artists, 1 programmer and a musician, though the roles will blur and not be as clear cut as that. They will wear many hats.

Comparatively Baldurs Gate 3 had around 470 core staff at Larian plus support staff. They had over a hundred times more staff on the dev team. Personally I think it’s more surprising that Silksong could be made in the same time as BG3 with so few staff, not the other way around! But why compare, just enjoy both.

Re: Best Nintendo Switch 2 Cases To Carry And Protect Your Console

@riChchestM I have the ProCase slim and it’s pretty good imo, suits my needs perfectly. Who’s giving it bad reviews? It’s 4.3 on Amazon.

What I wanted was a very slim case that will protect the Switch 2, carry some games but nothing else. It’s not a hard shell case, but it doesn’t need to be, it’s tough enough to offer enough protection while still being lightweight, which a hard shell isn’t.

One additional thing I like is that the elasticated pockets for the games are not as tall as other cases I tried so you can actually see just enough of the carts below the switch logo to identify them without having to take all the games out one by one to read the label. (I hated this on my Switch 1 case, and was a must for switch 2)

One small thing I don’t like is it fits very snugly in the padded case (which is good) but the pull tab to get it out is a bit short and you have to pinch your fingers a bit to grab it. But all in all very happy for what I paid.

@PJOReilly Small question. For Switch 1 I had a similar case with elastic pockets for the games. But one super-annoying aspect to this was that the elastic covered most of the game cartridge and you couldn’t see which game was which without removing them one by one. Is this the same? Or does enough of the game show to identify them.

It’s the small things sometimes!

Re: Feature: 11 Games With 'Secret' Performance Bumps You Should Revisit On Switch 2

themightyant

Every game I tried that performed badly got a boost. I’ve yet to see a Switch 1 game have any issues, though I only have around 50 games.

Most noticeable for me were Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom / Links Awakening (there was something about the tilt shift graphical style and stuttering that made this feel awful to me before)

Bayonetta 3, Zelda: TotK in ultrahand, and a few other were also pretty big, though I tended not to but the third party games that performed even worse. Xenoblade 2 & 3 also feel much smoother.

Re: Capcom Is Recording Switch 2 Game-Key Card Purchases As "Digital Sales"

themightyant

@Duncanballs nobody is saying Digital isn’t here. We’re just saying we ALSO want physical because CHOICE is good.

And frankly we give up so many consumer rights with Digital that it’s a pretty bleak future of Nintendo like pricing - games that rarely go on sale - no refunds, no sales, limited sharing. Digital is convenient, it’s got that going for it, but it’s worse in almost every other regard apart from that.

Re: Poll: So, Did You Order A Nintendo Switch 2?

themightyant

Ordered 2 of them. Both apparently being delivered tomorrow. Looking forward to seeing how Switch 1 games run on Switch 2 as I’ve been saving many of those releases hoping for 30fps and better resolution. (E.g. Zelda EoW, Xenoblade X etc.)

Plus getting lost in Zelda BotW & TotK at 60fps. Will mostly just use Switch 1 pro controller. I don’t need the C button.

Re: Best MicroSD Express Cards For Nintendo Switch 2

themightyant

They are expensive right now, but they are the latest tech. However storage prices usually tumble over time, the smart decision is to hold out as long as you can. It’s likely most don’t need one day 1. Hopefully by Black Friday / Christmas prices should have come down... hopefully I can last till then. Most of my Switch 1 games are carts.

Re: Zelda Fans Are Concerned About The Free Switch 2 Updates, But Don't Worry

themightyant

@larryisaman This is exactly the concern I have that they don't seem too concerned if games will run better or worse, it's just how they turn out.

When Xbox One first did Backwards compatibility some games like Halo: Reach ran much worse (around 15fps on XBO vs 30fps on XB360) but Microsoft pulled their finger out and put in the hard graft to get it right. Will Nintendo do the same?

Re: Zelda Fans Are Concerned About The Free Switch 2 Updates, But Don't Worry

themightyant

I’m more worried about the games NOT receiving Switch 2 patches. We have no idea how these will run except a long list of games that have issues right now.

In theory the significantly better hardware SHOULD run games at smoother framerates and higher resolutions if Dynamic Resolution Scaling is used. But as they are using a compatibility layer there is a chance games could run worse. The fact that Nintendo have shown NOTHING about this is concerning.

E.g. How are XC1, 2 & 3 going to run?

Re: Nvidia: Switch 2 Has "10x The Graphics Performance Of The Nintendo Switch"

themightyant

@Maxz Digital Foundry have already had a brief look Switch 2 footage. Based on pixel counts and framerates alone they found Metroid prime to be a 5.76x boost to pixel count and Zelda a 5.12x boost to pixel throughput (2.56x pixel count / 900p to 1440p and a 2x boost to framerate) but it also looked a lot more consistently 60fps than Switch's 30fps, so it may be a bit more.

Either way Nvidia usually exaggerate these things, cherry picking one metric. 10x sound nice but 5x - 6x is probably more realistic in real terms. Still a very nice upgrade.

Re: Standard Micro SD Cards Won't Work On Nintendo Switch 2

themightyant

@MeloMan No they do bigger. Lexar sells the Play Pro Ex which currently cost (on Amazon US / UK)

  • 248GB = $50 / £48
  • 512GB = $99 / £95
  • 1TB = $199 / £191

But as they are the only manufacturer making these sizes now it's a price premium. I expect these to tumble as more manufacturers and more devices use them. We might just need to be a little patient.

Personally I am happy because the 8x speed increase over Switch 1 should lead to faster load times which is important to me.

Re: Standard Micro SD Cards Won't Work On Nintendo Switch 2

themightyant

@Razzy That's a fair point, perhaps they won't drop as halving every year, due to less devices using them but I still expect them to fall fast. Currently only 2 manufactures really sell them San Disk and Lexar, they are at a premium, but as this opens up to more manufacturers and more devices this will drop.

Either way I think this is a sensible move 100MB/s like the Switch 1's UHS-1 interface is FAR too slow for up to 4K data. 800MB/s - 900MB/s with Express is a much better transfer rate and should lead to fast load times.

Re: Standard Micro SD Cards Won't Work On Nintendo Switch 2

themightyant

@Razzy They are right NOW, but pricing for new MicroSD card tech tumbles FAST, this is currently cutting edge (which is a good thing!). Before "EXPRESS" it was "U3, A2, V30 UHS-1", before that it was "Class 10, U1, V10" etc. etc. they usually roughly halve in price each year for the newer tech. So i'd recommend waiting.

256gb built in should be enough to get most people started, until prices come down... if you are patient.

It's a shame they don't allow older SD cards for older Switch games though, for those that want to have their whole library with them.

Re: Review: Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition (Switch) - An Underrated Gem Transforms Into The Series' Best

themightyant

@Judal27 I put in about 300+ hours into the original, so I obviously enjoyed it, but i'd still probably put it as the worst in the series for 3 reasons. 1. Plot sucks. 2. Most characters suck, or at least their interactions do. 3. Even more busywork than other Xenoblade games. But it's still a 9 - 9.5/10 for me, these things don't stop it being a wonderful game, and exploring that world is an all timer.

Re: Switch 2 Filings Show Support For Wi-Fi 6

themightyant

@Discostew that was my point, that WiFi 5 should have been fine on Switch but it wasn’t because of how they built it. So it doesn’t really matter if they have have WiFi 6, or 7, it’s more about how they use it.

I don’t play online much, but I tried cloud streaming Control and Re: Village and it was the single worst cloud experience I have tried.

Game download speeds are also glacial, (thankfully they are often small by todays 4K standards) though that could be more of an infrastructure problem

Re: Switch 2 Filings Show Support For Wi-Fi 6

themightyant

While it’s not the latest technology that doesn’t necessarily matter, Wi-Fi 6 is perfectly capable of working fine for its purposes… But then again so was Wi-Fi 5 in the Switch yet they managed to balls it up. It’s more about HOW they implement it.

Re: "The Answer Was Always No" - Ex-Nintendo Employee On Zelda Movie Pitches

themightyant

It’s pretty simple the Super Mario Bros movie likely made them over $500 million in pre-tax profit off a $50 million investment.

Reports were PROFIT was split 50:50 with Universal AFTER Universal had recouped costs, which were reportedly $50 million each ($100 million total budget) and I have assumed another $100 million in marketing by Universal.

It made $1,360 million at the box office leaving Nintendo’s pre-tax profit around $555 million if my assumptions, reported figures and deal specifics are correct. Why wouldn’t Nintendo try the same? Even if it was less successful it’s still likely printing money for them off a relatively meagre investment.

Also consider this doesn’t happen in a vacuum, game sales and other merchandise will also spike off the back of the movie. They would be idiots to say no.

Re: Hollow Knight: Silksong Has Vanished From US Switch eShop

themightyant

Not a fan of announcing games early but in this case they had to as originally Hornet was meant to be a stretch goal reward for the Kickstarter. They had to let backers know this wasn’t coming and why, it had morphed into a sequel instead (that they are giving to hollow knight backers) Tough position to be in, ideally they would have wanted to wait several years to announce it.

Re: Random: Hideki Kamiya Would Rather You Not Play Okami On The Wii

themightyant

One of my favourite games that I’ve bought and played on most platforms. Personally I prefer the Wii version to the Ps2 one, the drawing mechanic much better fitted the Wii mote. But would agree the HD versions are the best way to play it, not least there are some nice quality of life features that make it a better all around game.
