We've been hearing each week how well Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled has been performing in the charts, but Activision and Beenox haven't actually released any sales figures yet. This live service racing game is obviously doing well, though, if its online leaderboards are anything to go by.
Below is the minimum number of players per platform who have played the game online since the launch of the Grand Prix event on 3rd July. Unsurprisingly, the PlayStation 4 is the platform of choice, with more than one million connected players and the Switch player base is behind the Xbox One in third place. Again though, this only takes into account players who have actually played the game online.
- PlayStation 4: 1,017,723 connected players
- Switch: 171,445 connected players
- Xbox One: Over 240,000 connected players
While this provides a rough idea of the number of people playing CTR collectively online, it's not necessarily an accurate representation of how many copies of the game have actually been sold so far.
What do you think about the above numbers? Have you played CTR online yet? Tell us in the comments.

That's kinda what I expected, I'm not disappointed though.
Haven't picked up the game, I loved it back when I was younger but I've got mario kart now.
Mario kart is KING!!!
PC's the worst in terms of online playerbase!? Interesting...
Also wow. That gap between Xbox One and PS4 concurrent online player count sure is something
EDIT: I'M A BEEG DUMB DUMB I COMPLETELY FORGOT THIS WASNT RELEASED ON PC WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH ME
It is a remake of a playstation exclusive, so this isn't too suprising. All three consoles seem to have a healthy player base though.
Good luck trying to topple Mario Kart. Quite frankly, any other kart racer is totally superfluous in my eyes.
And no publisher has been ambitious enough to produce anything that comes even remotely close. Just look at the Nickelodeon kart racer, which had no voiceovers. Pathetic.
As someone who has played virtually every Mario Kart game CTR gives the series a very strong run for its money, in my opinion it is better since it rewards player skill more through all the tricks you can do to get through the levels quicker.
I love MK7 & MK8.... and now I also love CTR. I'm really glad I gave it a chance. I think online could use some weapons balance tweeks or a no-weapons race mode, but it's still epic.
...Now if I could only get the Sewer Speedway shortcut to work to beat Oxide's time trial : )
I bought the game purely for the nostalgia of replaying the adventure mode (and ended up a bit disappointed with it to be honest). As far as multiplayer goes, it's inferior to Mario Kart in pretty much every way so there's no real point.
I’m guilty for not adding to the online switch base. Enjoying the game in single player!
Those numbers are bad by Activision standards. Layoffs incoming.
@Silly_G yeah as fun as MK8 is CTR is an enjoyable challenge.
@Kalmaro why not both? They’re different enough to each have their own merits
the smaller playerbase on switch can work to ones benefit as it increases the chance of you being in the top 5% and getting the champion kart
I play Crash online all the time on Nintendo Switch, and I have never had any real issues finding players. It is pretty darn fun!
Even as well as the Switch has been selling, the PS4 and Xbone have been on the market much longer and have that bigger install base still. Though I think Switch is on course to pass the Xbone soon. I found contradicting numbers when I googled it.
It's only lower on Switch cause everyone else is playing either Team Sonic Racing or Mario Kart 8 Deluxe.
This isn't really a surprise. If a Banjo game came out for these 3 platforms, which one would have the most sales? Nintendo's.
There's a nostalgia factor here. Crash in the beginning was a PlayStation corner stone. Plus, there's more 100 million PlayStation 4's out there. If it was even close, there'd be something terribly wrong
No surprises, Nintendo Switch Online SUCKS.
Whenever they want to improve it, more people will pay, and more players will be online.
Makes sense, this stands as my most regretted purchase so far this year. Didn’t even bother playing it online.
I haven’t touched it since mario maker came out
@SlyPlayr09 Well, less customization options. But more cosmetics.
Personally I don't think the actual racing is anywhere even close to MK8...
But like Diddy Kong Adventure Racing and Crash Team Racing (PS1) before it, CTR:NF is in a different league entirely for single player content.
@graysoncharles ALSO Fighting games
DBFZ and SFV are pretty big on PC
I just thought pc wouldnt be so low in comparison to switch
@retro_player_22 People play Team Sonic Racing?
I have the PS4 version but I haven't played online. Make of that what you will
@retro_player_22
Team Sonic racing is dead imo
@BlueBlur101 The game isn't even available on PC currently...
Bit surprised Xbox is higher than Switch, seems like the perfect game for portable console but I guess most people would be playing offline on the go.
I haven't bought the game yet. But will do at some point. However, I'm not really in to any kind of GaaS shenanigans.
I have all three, and play all of them. I think Mario Kart has the family/friends multiplayer won by a mile but I have enjoyed the team aspect of Sonic for couch co-op in a racer. I bought Sonic physical, intending to trade it in for CTR, but couldn't bring myself to do it and still playing it and enjoying it, although for my money the tracks and boost mechanic, along with the grand prix events give CTR the edge overall. I had never played the original, so was shocked at the quality and amount of tracks.
@BlueBlur101
Firstly where is PC mentioned? Secondly and most importantly this game has not been released on PC lol
@Silly_G You haven't looked hard enough.Sonic and all-stars racing transformed was amazing,i liked it much more than Mario Kart 8.Its the first game i played when i bought a Wii U during launch period,totally ignoring the bundled Nintendoland for a while.
Remaster of PlayStation exclusive sells the most on a PlayStation console. Who wuddathunk?
I'm not surprised. CTR:NF is fun, but inferior in the key areas to MK8D. Superficial customisation of racers pales in comparison with actual game mode and vehicle customisation, and Adventure mode is interesting only for a very short while. If it wasn't for seasonal challenges and rewards, player attendance on all platforms would be much, much lower, since online gameplay is very imbalanced and doesn't really promote competitive play (also, as far as I know, the Grand Prix numbers are people who played the game while online; on Switch only 1/3 of that number actually participated in an online race). And I'm saying this as someone who loved the original CTR.
For many years people thought Crash Bandicoot was Sony's mascot. I think people currently still links those two brands.
We were starving of kart racers since years on the PS4 so we have no choice but getting CTR. While on the switch they got Mario Kart since the release. And american games will always be inferior to japanese games so Mario Kart beating CTR on system where they're both here is normal.
Crash racing is awesome, not as good as Mario Kart 8 but a very close second. Especially as MK8 has been out a while now. To anyone who already has MK8 I would recommend picking this up too. The single player is so good with lots of content and the unlocks are do-able. To those without either get MK8 first and then this
not all switch players can go online due to a bug, so the number should be higher.
I have to jump through a couple of hoops to get online to work in CTR, because it refuses to connect directly through my Wi-Fi.
@BlueBlur101 of course PC is worse. Today games are Steam account required for the online part. Consoles is a better choice to be online. Kinda surprised that Switch comes close Xbox. Xbox is doing horrible lately. Xbox 360 was their hardware absolutely. This time not so much
@Alucard83
Why would having a Steam account be a problem, it is free, unlike Nintendo's online service. Again, THIS GAME WAS NOT RELEASED ON PC.
"Number of Connected Players"... "Number". You got it right in the article.
Anyway, as people are using this comment section to talk about the best kart racers, I might as well join in. Mario Kart is so overrated! It's just not fun. I much prefer the Sonic racing games where skill is important. I haven't played CTR yet.
There's something about the Crash games' artstyle that really puts me off so I'm not interested in this game. Plus Mario Kart 8 is still amazing to play and I already got Team Sonic Racing if I ever am in the mood for a Kart racer that isn't Mario Kart
@Silly_G Crash Team Racing has one thing I feel Mario Kart really could with - an adventure mode.
Loving CTR. Online mode is great fun. Never had much trouble finding players for a race. Battle mode can be quiet at times though in terms of number of people online.
Definitely prefer CTR to MK8. Much more skill based and much less rubber banding.
I've said it before and I'll keep saying it.... I want to use the trigger buttons for drifting/boosting not the shoulder buttons!! I have big hands - they feel cramped up playing. Other than that I really love this game. I love Mario Kart 8 to bits and I don't want to compare it with CTR-NF because the mechanics are so different. They're both awesome for different reasons.
I bought it on ps4 together with mario maker 2. I have an awesome time with them and Crash team racing is maybe my new favorite kart racing game. (haven't finished it yet.)
@Alpha008 Because I don't have that much money, haha.
I have throughly enjoyed CTR:NF on the Switch. Mario Kart 8 still has the edge overall but there is a great amount of content all done to a high quality in CTR:NF.
If you like Kart Racing games it really is a good idea to have both games... Mario Kart 9 will be a while coming and this is a really great game to play while waiting for it....
Nintendolife reviewed it an 8 which I agree with, but if they can improve the loading times as promised in the next patch and contine to add the odd track I would rate it a 9.....
Argh! Internet! Numbers!
Or 'Console with greatest Kart Racer ever is in third place behind consoles with no kart racers'?
I love Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, particularly because of 200cc, but as someone who never played the original Crash Team Racing nor one who has any real idea of expect from it minus the drift mechanics, my interest in another kart racer largely lies in Team Sonic Racing, as I already played Transformed and know Sumo Digital can pull off a quality game of the genre.
@Kalmaro okay, that’s fair enough.
I bought it on PS4. I also don't ever play online.
To everyone thinking they're not contributing to these stats by not playing online: you're wrong and you are if you're connected to the internet when you finish a race because if you're earning nitro points, then you're part of these stats.
Remember: there are two separate leaderboards; one for online racing points and one for Grand Prix Nitro points, the latter of which you can earn in single player.
@BlueBlur101 You mean total online players, not concurrent.
As far as the debate between Mario Kart and CTR, CTR is 100% a solid game and I'm enjoying it as much as and sometimes more than Mario Kart 8 when it was in its heyday. Great track design, more appealing graphics, gameplay is more focused on skill than random items, very robust single player (can't say that for Kart). Bought it on Switch for the portability and don't regret the slight decrease in performance compared to PS4.
No surprise, and probably does reflect the overall sales of the game.
@thedicemaster Yes the Switch and it's sub standard wifi connection, quite sad 2 think we still discussing that in 2019...frustrating...
@Sim1 it has nothing to do with the switch itself, the net code of ctr is just bad.
every game works fine on my home network, except ctr.
ctr doesn't work at all.
Why are you all comparing it to MK? That is like comparing CoD with Arma.... 2 completely different games...
@Sim1 Agree, Switch’s wifi is useless at best
@thedicemaster U must b a "lucky one" cos the Wi Fi antenna on the Switch has been widely criticised from day 1, even on this very site (by many readers)...there's all sorts of recommended "fixes" but as it stands "stock standard" from the box it's definitely not anything to rave about...
@Sim1 the range is a bit less than other devices yes, but with my router being placed roughly in the middle of the house I can get a stable Wi-Fi connection through the entire house.
it's only ever an issue when I'm trying to connect to a router inside a house while I'm sitting outside, but then I can always use my phone as an extender.
