Tetris 99 was one of 'all-new' titles revealed during last night's Nintendo Direct, and is an online take on the classic Russian puzzler which pits you against 98 other players in a Battle Royale of a block-busting nature.
The game went live shortly after the presentation was done and dusted, and is free to download for Nintendo Switch Online members. Shortly afterwards, what appeared to be the official Twitter account stated that it was coming to another portable console – but perhaps not the one you were thinking.
As you can see from the replies to that tweet, the news went down a storm. Why pick the PSP of all consoles? Why not the PS Vita or even the 3DS? The internet couldn't properly process the fact that in 2019, a new Tetris game was released on a system that turns 15 this year.
However, it soon became apparent that the account is fake. Not only has the PSP's access to the PlayStation Store been disconnected making any digital release impossible, there's also the fact that the official Tetris Twitter account makes no mention of a PSP version and states that Tetris 99 is indeed exclusive to Switch:
Still, it made us giggle.

YES! Eat it haha
What a bunch of twits!
First gift for Nintendo online users? I will try it!!
Keen to see what 'battle royale' really means with regard to a Tetris game. Because if it means that you keep playing another one of the 99 until only one person hasn't lost a match, isn't that just a playoff tournament?
Why even bother? Some people are just horrible.
I seriously hope for PushSquare users' sake the sister site doesn't have our same "random" category. Such an article there would only lead to either heartbreak for Tetris fans or the usual Nintendo dissing/sourgraping from the wiseguys.
Wow this game is butt ugly compared to Tetris Effect.
I would love to play this, but it's still not worth subscribing to NSO for the privilege.
I've only played 3 matches so far, but it is a fun little game. but i personaly, i like sega's puyo puyo tetris a little more. it's more challenging that this game made it to top 10 on my first try hahaha
@dystome
You play against 98 other players all at the same time, not one after another, until only one player remains. Winner winner...
@AlexSora89 They have reported on the game not coming to the PSP already.
Okay, so my Puyo Puyo Tetris, my Tetris Effect, and my Tetris 99 can all combine and form a tetromino of Cosmic Tetris Supremacy!
It's a brilliant game. It's my favourite Battle Royale game already. There Can Be Only One.
@FragRed Hoo boy, this is going to be fun.
The game graphics are totally functional and look VERY good when you realise you're seeing in real time what's happening to other players while you play. Very cool.
@Retupmocnin
I know right? It almost looks like a different game?!?!?
It is a single player game...no people in the online lobby
This game is absolutely superb,I'm hooked already. You're into a match very quickly,the gameplay is intense, the music is banging. My best so far is 3rd place.
Please be kind, but... are there instructions? I just kept playing regular Tetris in the middle while competing players threw obstacles at me and I wasn't sure how to do the same
@hakjie11 You're playing against 98 other players online. At least I think you are?
@sleepinglion The Right stick switches between attacks, it's default set to random so every line tin clear will attack a random player. You can change it to Attackers, which I think hits the folk attacking you. Then there is Knockout which I assume finishes off a player on the brink and Badges, which I'm not sure on. There is a meter running up the side of the playing field, which goes down if you clear lines or fills your screen with junk if it reaches the top. Each player seems to have lives too. There really should be instructions explaining this though.
@Retupmocnin You probably don't even know what Tetris is.
@electrolite77 Tetris 99 looks like something that was pooped out of Windows 95.
@Retupmocnin
I agree with that. It is emulating Win 95 in the worst way. I may pass on this one.
People whining about graphics in a 99-player free Online Tetris game.
Modern gamers, man (shakes head and walks off)
Just because they slap the word "official" doesn't make it official. Plus the Twitter Account doesn't have a "Verified" mark on it, so that raises lots of alarms.
Plus why use the PSP? The PS Vita not good enough?
@Silly_G you s don't need the NSO to play free games online.
@dystome when you start, you are paired up with a different player - as you get tetris's, you start pushing their blocks upwards closer to disaster. As they die you target someone else and as the game progresses and the players thin out, you can end up being targeted by multiple players (you have some control over who you are targeting buy flicking the stick)its why you get to see all 99 players boards simultaneously - you can start strategically targeting players close to death to knock them out of the game.
Tetris is Tetris, and having foolishly believed the hype for Tetris Effect VR and bought it (spoiler- it's just Tetris with added swirly particle effects) I shan't be doing so again.
Tetris is a fine game, but it's also a very simple one which I grew tired of many years ago.
Nobody genuinely believed that tweet surely
@ramu-chan well this one's included as part of the online subscription so at least it isn't £35
This game is my go to battle royal on the Switch.
actually considering getting the online for tetris now
@Geobros It's actually really fun. It makes me feel better about paying for Nintendo Online just to keep playing the games that I've paid the full retail price for.
@Silly_G Tight arse
Can't you access the PS in store with a PSP still. I thought you could at least access some of the stuff on the PlayStation Vita's storefront. I mean the PlayStation store still has PSP games for sale
@Zidentia
Yea best pass on it.
Imagine asking folk to download and play it for free?
The bare faced cheek of them.
@OorWullie Thanks, man! Yeah, I've been gaming for over 30 years and I was totally clueless. Some sort of rudimentary instructions would have been awesome
Weirdly, I would actually be interested in this on PSP - if WEP internet were still a thing. All the fuss over Persona 5 R and Joker being in Smash made me pick up my old machine to play Persona 3 Portable for the first time. I love how light even my launch-edition PSP feels after so many hours with the Switch.
Used to be pretty decent at Tetris at one point. These days, I doubt I would make it to the final 70. Still, I think this is a great concept. I'd rather play this than PUBG or Fortnite
Haha, what a crazy weird rumor. That said, I think competitive Tetris and other puzzle games have always stressed me out. I love Tetris, but I have always liked it better as a solo affair. Might try this because it's free, though.
Wow! I didn't see this coming and had to rewind the video because I didn't believe it when they said it was free.
The actual download of the game was very quick. I'm not even sure it took a minute.
Started up the game thinking that I would play a few matches, ended up playing for a couple hours. It's simple yet very addictive. You can actually pick who you target but it's difficult to concentrate on that while concentrating on the game. I'm sure the good players will master this. The best I got was 10th place a couple times. The one time I got 10th, the other 9 fell within seconds! If I could have just held on a little longer! The matchmaking was very quick. I thought it would take longer for the matchmaking since the game just came out for free but I never waited very long for a game to start.
I don't understand people complaining about the graphics. It's Tetris. I don't need stars or fireworks in the background. I actually prefer the pieces each having a different color too.
The only thing I wish they would change, is after you die, you should be able to watch the other games play out. I hope they update the game to include this option.
"I pulled a sneaky on ya"
I'm not sure what's funnier, the initial joke here or the fact that people actually believed it.
Tetris: Fortnite Edition
This is, like, satire, right?
@OorWullie KO people to gain badges, which eventually makes more lines appear on opponents, so switch to KO until about 70 people left, then switch to badges.
I get top 15 most games like this
Still kinda wish Tetris Effect would come out on Switch now, though free online multiplayer Tetris is fun times, so I'll take it.
psp games technically didn't need to be distributed through the playstation store, if signed with a demo key they'll run on any psp just by dropping the game folder on a memorystick.
this is how you could get some foreign game demos, like the DjMax portable 2 demo, without an account in that region.
@ramu-chan Too bad.
@AlexSora89 They have the sublime Tetris Effect to play. Used my NOS trial to play Tetris 99 and its a fun way to kill 5 minutes. But Tetris Effect is something else.
I’ve already killed way more than five minutes with it...
This is fantastic - as someone who still owns a PSP I was really excited there for a second!
@Vivid_viking
It matters not that it is free. One can still pass on something. If free is what motivates you go right ahead.
@AndyRogan Cheers for the tips. I'm doing pretty well now.
@BumpkinRich
I have a Tetris on PSP as one of the so-called minis (capitalized that exact way). It's good, it's functional, but its Italian translation is abhorrent. Game Over has been translated as "game", followed by a separate word for "over" in the "above" sense: GIOCO SOPRA, while the correct translation would be FINE PARTITA ("End of game"). If it helps and if memory serves, EA is behind it.
That said, I've been hearing a lot about Tetris Effect. But I guess the only actual Tetris games on Switch are 99 and the Puyo Puyo crossover. Not complaining: I own both.
@OorWullie I am talking about the lasting appeal of it. It may be crowded in the launch month. But it will be playing against 98 bots very soon. Kids are not interested in this classic concept.
