Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (January 22nd)

shining_nexus

On Switch I have a ton of games to choose from and this weekend I’ll try to focus more on Captain Toad with its DLC (which I purchased after playing the demo) and Banjo. First time playing Banjo and so far I am enjoying it.

On Xbox I just recently booted up Psychonauts 2. I love Double Fine games with their cartoony artistic style and sense of humor.

Happy gaming everyone.

Re: Talking Point: How Does Microsoft's Purchase Of Activision Blizzard Impact Nintendo?

shining_nexus

I don’t think it’ll effect Nintendo very much. Nintendo is pretty much in their own little bubble and as long as they keep pumping out great games with old and new IPs and keep innovating fun new ways to play, they’re golden.

People can criticize the way they do business, but their foundation on building fun and creative ways to play for all ages is what Nintendo is all about.

Re: Feature: Nintendo Switch Year In Review - Our Stats And Most Played Games

shining_nexus

Most played:
1. Overwatch
2. Monster Hunter Rise
3. ACNH

Overwatch is one of those games that will always be on that list since I enjoy playing it occasionally since day one on PC. ACNH too actually.

My game of the year would have to go to…
1. Bravely Default 2
2. Great Ace Attorney Chronicles
3. Monster Hunter Rise

BD2 was a great throwback to classic turn based RPGs and I enjoyed every minute of it. GAAC was a lovely surprise and made me eager to play the other games in the series and other visual novel games in general. MHR was an addictive loot game with a satisfying combat system and fun gameplay loop. Can’t wait for the expansion.

Worthy mention is Paper Mario for NSO. First time playing through and absolutely loving it.

Re: Pokémon Brilliant Diamond And Shining Pearl Are Out Today On Switch, Which Version Are You Getting?

shining_nexus

GameStop has the “Play With No Risk” promo going on with Pokemon DP for those that want to try it out first.

After playing a few hours, it honestly feels like a well polished game. The graphics and chibi characters brings a modern aesthetic to the older art style. And the remastered music is banging (I highly recommend using a pair of good earphones). Never played the DS games, but I really doubt I would prefer playing those versions instead. I do prefer exp. share and I do like how it awards more points to those who participated in battle then those who didn’t, so that still encourages me to swap starter Pokémon.

I’m obviously keeping my copy.

Re: Review: Pokémon Brilliant Diamond And Shining Pearl - A Middling Pair Of Remakes

shining_nexus

Pokémon has always been easy and I doubt that will drastically change because the series are designed for children. Even without the exp. share, the game will be a cake walk for most experienced RPG players. If you want more depth and challenge in your RPGs, Pokémon is not it (online competitive is a different story).

I’m picking this one up. It’ll be a nice comfy playthrough with family.

Re: Soapbox: Even If GTA Trilogy Were Perfect, I'd Rather Be Shooting Balloons And Burying Gyroids

shining_nexus

The article made some good points about how a massive open world game can lack substance compared to a more enclosed game. That’s actually one of the problems I have with some open worlds is because most of it is time spent traversing an empty playground with no toys to play with.

It feels like this article was written based on current events and the authors personal experience with both games at the same time. I enjoy reading other people’s experience and opinions about anything gaming related as long as they’re written with respect to others.

Re: Soapbox: Can We Please Retire The Phrase 'Lazy Devs' Already?

shining_nexus

@Fulgor_Astral Right, a product of laziness. So the solution is to work harder. We just figured out the secret to making good quality games people. Better call these companies up and let them know that lazy equals bad games. Apparently they don’t know this because there’s a lot of lazy games out there.

Re: Review: Sin and Punishment - A Genuine Treasure And No Mistake

shining_nexus

@Spiders Mostly good as in the games can be reliably played on modern hardware with streamlined improvements and upgraded visuals. I agree, it’s not perfect and Nintendo should do better, but that doesn’t make it a horrible product.

Here’s the thing, I’m a dirty casual that just likes to play video games on the Switch because of its hybrid nature, convenience, and ease of use. That’s something these other emulators don’t have and why I think NSO is the better product.

Re: Random: Nintendo's Switch Online 'Expansion Pack' Trailer Is Now Its Most Disliked YouTube Video Ever

shining_nexus

I’d recommend it. Emulation is mostly good. Playing Zelda OoT on the Switch with suspend points is helping me to play through this wonderful classic. Definitely going to get a lot of playtime with current offering of N64/Genesis games and upcoming ones, not to mention the AC DLC.

Criticism is warranted, but way overblown. Best way to judge the service is to experience yourself. If you want to play these N64 games on the Switch for the convenience then I think it’s worth the asking price.

Re: Pikmin Bloom Is Now Available In The Americas

shining_nexus

I like it! It feels more like a compliment to my runs and may encourage me to go more often. The microtransactions look standard (gross), but I don’t feel pressured to spend at this time since I’m more then likely to treat this more as a lifestyle app then a game.

Edit - threw 2 bucks at it for the starter pack. It was very generous with petals!

Re: Nintendo Switch System Update 13.1.0 Is Now Live - Adds The Switch Online Expansion Pack

shining_nexus

@bound4earth I doubt fans are unaware of the competitions offering. I love PlayStation, but 90% of their games don’t appeal to me anymore and that $60/year for the free games or even online play isn’t worth it to me. I’m sure a lot of people feel the same way.

Maybe like me, these fans prefer to play retro Nintendo games on a convenient hybrid console like the Switch and the extra $30/year is worth it. Should it be cheaper because the other offerings are better value? Or because Nintendo simply just dumped emulators and roms (with that Nintendo polish)? That depends on what the individual values and not this perceived ignorance you claim.

At the end of the day, they’re just video games that are meant to be played and have fun on your platform of choice. And that’s a price I’m willing to pay for.

Re: Nintendo Switch System Update 13.1.0 Is Now Live - Adds The Switch Online Expansion Pack

shining_nexus

The upscaling looks very good for N64. Was not expecting to be impressed by it. I personally have a difficult time playing N64 games with the pro controller, so I’ll be waiting for the N64 controller to come in. Been playing Contra Hard Corps for the time being and it’s a blast (the music is banging too).

It’s funny how some people think that Nintendo fans will carry this expansion to succeed because they’ll eat up anything made by the big N. Nintendo has failed many times before and they can fail again, regardless of all these “Nintendo Fans”. If people purchase this expansion pack it’s because they think it’s worth it.

Re: Switch's N64 And Sega Genesis Controllers Are Now Up For Pre-Order

shining_nexus

Just ordered the N64 controller and stoked to hear that rumble is included. Want to play through Yoshi’s Story with it when it launches, but honestly waiting to play Banjo and Paper Mario for the first time.

Skipped on the Genesis for now. May get one when it’s discounted. I don’t think it’s worth the $50. For now though, I will be using the SNES controller (for that retro experience) to play Bloodlines, Hard Corps, and Phantasy Star.

Re: UK Sales Data Shows A Strong Start For Switch OLED

shining_nexus

Traded in my launch Switch for $260 at GameStop, so upgrading was a no brainier for me. Glad I did because that larger OLED display and overall build is well worth it. Playing outside is so much more enjoyable. I could never go back to the older screens. And that battery life is outstanding, barely reached 50% all day.

Re: It's Officially Spooky Season In Animal Crossing: New Horizons

shining_nexus

@VoidofLight They could definitely improve the life sim portions a lot more. Having more activities to do with villagers is something I would like to see.

One thing that bothered me about multiplayer was the inability to help friends with decorating. I would have spent more time online with family and friends if that was possible.

Re: There's An Animal Crossing: New Horizons Update Coming Soon, And Brewster's Back

shining_nexus

@Yorumi When I play older games, I try to experience them for what they were when they were released and try to keep an open mind. I try not to compare it to future (and sometimes past) installments in terms of what those games did better, but rather what the game innovated on during that time. (Don’t know if that made any sense…) Basically, I’m super interested in the history of game designs in a particular series and want to understand what made them so fun to play when they were released.

Not too sure if I’m making any sense, but hopefully you kinda get what I’m trying to say.

Re: Here's Shin Megami Tensei V's First English Dub Trailer And Cast List

shining_nexus

I mostly prefer dub probably because I grew up watching anime like Ranma 1/2 dubbed. However, it was weird playing Great Ace Attorney with the Japanese characters, who were visiting London, dubbed with British accents.

SMTV sounds great and I can’t wait to play it. Might have to start avoiding articles and trailers like these so I can go in as blind as possible.

Re: There's An Animal Crossing: New Horizons Update Coming Soon, And Brewster's Back

shining_nexus

@Yorumi I was thinking about this the other day and I think it would be cool if jobs were rotated like visitors, like events that rewards a lot of bells (besides turnips). One day could be helping out Brewster (could be a 24 hour thing too), the other could be helping a visitor, or a visitor could come over and fly you to an island to mine materials (because hitting rocks for gold is silly).

Chances are we probably won’t see these kind of updates. I don’t see Nintendo making any substantial changes to gameplay for this AC iteration anyways, but staying optimistic. Honestly, I’ve been thinking about playing New Leaf. Maybe once I finally get over NH.

Re: There's An Animal Crossing: New Horizons Update Coming Soon, And Brewster's Back

shining_nexus

@Yorumi “I actually do agree overall that there's nothing like Animal Crossing. I'm actually rather surprised no one else has tried to do it.”

It really is a unique game in the life sim genre and would love to see someone create a game with a different take on the AC formula. With the recent shot in popularity (and criticism) with ACNH, I wouldn’t be surprised if an indie studio is developing an AC inspired game.

“Believe it or not I'm actually not a fan of complexity for complexity sake and I really believe complexity hinders gameplay most often.”

Agreed. I mostly see these in modern action western games. Skill trees and unnecessary RPG elements in action games tend to turn me off and why I prefer to play games like Zelda or Mario instead.

“Strictly in terms of terraforming in AC I think it's mostly fine and what I'd fix...”

I’d also like to add the ability to create stuff like caves, tunnels, or an overhead bridge.

“What ultimately bugs me about AC is that I've played the same game for 20 years and they haven't really added to it more than baby steps. Terraforming is a step in the right direction but all the cut content is a step in the wrong direction.”

Most of my experience with AC is with the original (played a little of and couldn’t get into NL and WW). NH is a fresh experience for me and I love it, but I understand how NH can frustrate long term fans by not building upon previous features.

I also like the gathering and crafting system featured in NH. I’m a sucker for those.

“What I'd really like to see is not complexity but the experience enriched…”

Those are really good ideas! If there’s one area that NH could significantly improve on, it’s the life sim aspect.

Villagers can feel so lifeless at times. What would be cool is if the villagers could learn about you on a more personal level. Imagine logging in after work and your villagers inviting you to hang out at the beach to relax after a hard day of work. Or if they knew you were a student, they would scold you about playing too much and encourage you to turn off the game and start studying.

Jobs with incomes was something I thought would be fun to have, but I don’t know if it would fit the island get away theme they got going on. Seems too close to real life. However, having tasks to help residents, like decorating or crafting or saving them from drowning, would seem like a better fit.

Re: There's An Animal Crossing: New Horizons Update Coming Soon, And Brewster's Back

shining_nexus

@Yorumi “Therefore if terraforming is so important why not play games that did it much better and offer way more freedom for creativity and customization?"

Read that quote from @Anti-Matter post. Didn’t read the full context of the conservation before then, so yeah, sorry for making assumptions.

Regardless, those are my thoughts about why I prefer AC over other games with more creative tools like Minecraft. Moving along.

Re: There's An Animal Crossing: New Horizons Update Coming Soon, And Brewster's Back

shining_nexus

@Yorumi ACNH’s terraforming is radically different from Minecraft and MC doesn’t offer the charm and life sim features unique to AC. Terraforming in AC is more aesthetically pleasing and doesn’t take much engineering to build projects.

I’m convinced that you are in the camp of “more and complex is always better”, but in the case of myself, it’s simplicity and minimalist design is what draws me in.

Re: Animal Crossing Series 5 amiibo Cards Are "Coming Soon"

shining_nexus

@chiefeagle02 that sucks. I would have immediately re-started my game.

I would like to collect and share these cards, but Nintendo would need to make these easily accessible to purchase. If I can’t simply preorder or walk in on my own time to purchase these cards then I’m not bothering. Same goes for their collector edition games (looking at you Metroid Dread).

Re: There's An Animal Crossing: New Horizons Update Coming Soon, And Brewster's Back

shining_nexus

As much as I want to have more things to collect and have new gameplay mechanics, like maybe farming, I don’t want this game to consume too much of my time. Too many awesome games to play! I’m happy playing an hour or two here and there, just hanging with my buds and building them a Halloween park.

Regardless, I’m excited to watch the direct and hopefully be pleasantly surprised.
