@Yorumi When I play older games, I try to experience them for what they were when they were released and try to keep an open mind. I try not to compare it to future (and sometimes past) installments in terms of what those games did better, but rather what the game innovated on during that time. (Don’t know if that made any sense…) Basically, I’m super interested in the history of game designs in a particular series and want to understand what made them so fun to play when they were released.
Not too sure if I’m making any sense, but hopefully you kinda get what I’m trying to say.
I mostly prefer dub probably because I grew up watching anime like Ranma 1/2 dubbed. However, it was weird playing Great Ace Attorney with the Japanese characters, who were visiting London, dubbed with British accents.
SMTV sounds great and I can’t wait to play it. Might have to start avoiding articles and trailers like these so I can go in as blind as possible.
@Yorumi I was thinking about this the other day and I think it would be cool if jobs were rotated like visitors, like events that rewards a lot of bells (besides turnips). One day could be helping out Brewster (could be a 24 hour thing too), the other could be helping a visitor, or a visitor could come over and fly you to an island to mine materials (because hitting rocks for gold is silly).
Chances are we probably won’t see these kind of updates. I don’t see Nintendo making any substantial changes to gameplay for this AC iteration anyways, but staying optimistic. Honestly, I’ve been thinking about playing New Leaf. Maybe once I finally get over NH.
@Yorumi “I actually do agree overall that there's nothing like Animal Crossing. I'm actually rather surprised no one else has tried to do it.”
It really is a unique game in the life sim genre and would love to see someone create a game with a different take on the AC formula. With the recent shot in popularity (and criticism) with ACNH, I wouldn’t be surprised if an indie studio is developing an AC inspired game.
“Believe it or not I'm actually not a fan of complexity for complexity sake and I really believe complexity hinders gameplay most often.”
Agreed. I mostly see these in modern action western games. Skill trees and unnecessary RPG elements in action games tend to turn me off and why I prefer to play games like Zelda or Mario instead.
“Strictly in terms of terraforming in AC I think it's mostly fine and what I'd fix...”
I’d also like to add the ability to create stuff like caves, tunnels, or an overhead bridge.
“What ultimately bugs me about AC is that I've played the same game for 20 years and they haven't really added to it more than baby steps. Terraforming is a step in the right direction but all the cut content is a step in the wrong direction.”
Most of my experience with AC is with the original (played a little of and couldn’t get into NL and WW). NH is a fresh experience for me and I love it, but I understand how NH can frustrate long term fans by not building upon previous features.
I also like the gathering and crafting system featured in NH. I’m a sucker for those.
“What I'd really like to see is not complexity but the experience enriched…”
Those are really good ideas! If there’s one area that NH could significantly improve on, it’s the life sim aspect.
Villagers can feel so lifeless at times. What would be cool is if the villagers could learn about you on a more personal level. Imagine logging in after work and your villagers inviting you to hang out at the beach to relax after a hard day of work. Or if they knew you were a student, they would scold you about playing too much and encourage you to turn off the game and start studying.
Jobs with incomes was something I thought would be fun to have, but I don’t know if it would fit the island get away theme they got going on. Seems too close to real life. However, having tasks to help residents, like decorating or crafting or saving them from drowning, would seem like a better fit.
@RupeeClock I’ve coincidentally just played NSLT and it’s only around a 6 hour game. It also isn’t very difficult. I played it in bite sized sessions and overall it was a short and fun experience.
Of course mileage may vary, but for me, it really didn’t take much of my time.
@Yorumi “Therefore if terraforming is so important why not play games that did it much better and offer way more freedom for creativity and customization?"
Read that quote from @Anti-Matter post. Didn’t read the full context of the conservation before then, so yeah, sorry for making assumptions.
Regardless, those are my thoughts about why I prefer AC over other games with more creative tools like Minecraft. Moving along.
@Yorumi ACNH’s terraforming is radically different from Minecraft and MC doesn’t offer the charm and life sim features unique to AC. Terraforming in AC is more aesthetically pleasing and doesn’t take much engineering to build projects.
I’m convinced that you are in the camp of “more and complex is always better”, but in the case of myself, it’s simplicity and minimalist design is what draws me in.
@chiefeagle02 that sucks. I would have immediately re-started my game.
I would like to collect and share these cards, but Nintendo would need to make these easily accessible to purchase. If I can’t simply preorder or walk in on my own time to purchase these cards then I’m not bothering. Same goes for their collector edition games (looking at you Metroid Dread).
As much as I want to have more things to collect and have new gameplay mechanics, like maybe farming, I don’t want this game to consume too much of my time. Too many awesome games to play! I’m happy playing an hour or two here and there, just hanging with my buds and building them a Halloween park.
Regardless, I’m excited to watch the direct and hopefully be pleasantly surprised.
@SmartNickname I honestly don’t understand why people are getting so upset over furries. They’re make believe, like dragons and fairies, but people treat it like actual racism.
I’m only 10 hours in, so I won’t be reading ALL of the guide yet because I don’t want to spoil anything, but will definitely check it out when the grinding gets a bit much. I feel like there has to be a more efficient way to collect money besides farming (profits seem small) and my character progression feels slow at the moment (which can be solved by getting more money).
Bows are great for those who are having a difficult time combating monsters with the sword. You won’t have one in your inventory in the beginning, but can be crafted at the smithy.
Review is spot on. Wish there was more depth to the combat and farming systems, a way to teleport back to camp from anywhere, and a leveling system since grinding for materials can get tedious. Didn’t have any problem with text sizes, but yes, I think more games should implement the feature because there were other games where it was a problem for me.
Overall, a very comfortable game to play for those times where you just want to relax and engage in some mindless fun.
@BloodNinja Exactly. Can’t win them all and it’s sad how people consider him a failure now regardless of his past achievements. I respect what he has done for the industry and I will continue to be interested in any game he’s involved in regardless of platform.
An indie mobile game created solely by Yuji Naka? Heck yeah.
I’d much prefer the current UI. It’s simplicity and minimalist design is what makes it good. No messages, no activity log, no achievements, no distractions… just games.
A search function would help out a lot for those with large libraries.
Hollow Knight, Monster Hunter Rise, Skyward Sword, and Great Ace Attorney.
HK started to get really good for me after learning how to use some abilities effectively in combat. MHR always fun to do hunts and collect more armor pieces. Also finishing up on event quests and acquiring special layered armors. SS I believe I’m at the second flame dungeon. Puzzles are fantastic. GAA is just lovely and a chill story based game. The puzzles are fun to figure out and the characters and the story is what I like most about it.
May also try to get some Shin Megami Tensei 3 time in here.
This is great. Wanted to come back to this game (maybe for a week or two) and this update along with the Okami one might be a good time. Completed the game a while back, but there are still a lot of armors to collect and the fights are just fun to play through even with random players.
Hoping for a Final Fantasy collab. Missed the Behemoth fight and would actually like to see another monster, like maybe Cactaur.
Had no interest in getting the game until this trailer. The biggest reason being the battle system changes. It’s not a complete revamp, but a nice build on to the current system, which sorely needs some changes. I love building custom parties in RPGs (SMT3 is so good) with a fun combat system and so far this game looks promising.
Not big on graphics or performance at all (more inclined towards certain art styles, decent performances, and of course the fun factor), but the game definitely looks better then the last trailer.
Great showcase. A lot of these games I’ll probably add to wishlist for discounts or wait for physical copies (huge backlog of games I want to play anyways). I’m already sold on Eastward, Axiom, Shovel Knight, Garden Story, and Metal Slug Tactics.
I love how they're calling this an application and not a game. Besides SMR and Miitomo, their other mobile outings never gained any long term interest for me. Creating unique and fun experiences are what they do well. Looking forward to this one and trying it out on my walks.
@Kirgo that’s why I don’t invest all my money in one company. Diversification is key here. Even if my position in Nintendo loses money in the next 5 years, there are other company shares I own that will cover that loss.
With that said, I think Nintendo is a great company to invest in. The Switch is a success, their intellectual properties will continue to sell, they’re branching out to movies and theme parks, they have a butt load of cash to invest in and grow their business, they’re not afraid to take risk and create obscure products that may or may not be successful, etc.
Of course I could be wrong here, but I’m willing to take the chance that Nintendo will continue to grow their business in the next 5+ years.
@johnvboy I agree. I’m overwhelmed sometimes and lose track of what I’m doing everytime. There’s distractions everywhere and my villagers do the cutest things and have some very funny conversations with each other. Having Brewster along will hopefully bring some more fun interactions.
@ERIC_MACK it’s assumed. I wasn’t really expecting any major updates either. Truth is, I feel current NH is a complete game already. It seems like the devs wanted to focus on one idea with this iteration and give it the usual AC fundamentals and mechanics to make it feel like AC. That one idea of course is terraforming, decorating and customizations. NH is kinda like a combination of both Happy Home Designer and regular AC, which I’m personally onboard with.
@ERIC_MACK from my understanding, I think it’s the lack of new meaningful content (new characters, more robust events and villager interaction, activities to do with people, more stuff to collect, etc.) and features from older titles that didn’t make it into NH, is what people are hoping for. I like NH for what it is and these additions would be great to have and experience.
@ManaOwls I tried to watch Let’s Play videos of the other 2 scenarios in English and I just couldn’t finish it. I really want to experience those games properly someday and I even bought the Japanese copies just in case. Shining Force is so good.
@NEStalgia I feel you. Current Final Fantasy breaks my heart, but FF7 Remake is a step in the right direction and FF16 may be something I can enjoy for what it is.
I personally did not get into the older AC titles besides the original and I hope Nintendo continues building upon the current system and adding features from older titles.
There’s always the old games to play again or maybe an indie dev can fill in that gap like how Bug Fables did for Paper Mario.
Terraforming, outside decoration, and crafting is what makes NH so good. The Animal Crossing life sim features are the icing on the cake. There’s always something to do and accomplish, though I realize they are more personal goals rather than in game objectives (the collecting aspects, which there is a lot).
Building in this game is super fun. There is so much you can do with custom designs, the huge amounts of furniture that can be customized, diy recipes, and seasonal items. This in turn creates a community of players that help each other get items that they need to make these builds and share ideas. Heck, they even have a website dedicated to help people to trade items, called Nookazon. I have a group of family and friends that still play and it’s always nice to help each other with items and sharing our progress. Writing letters are nice too!
I’m in the process of building my island and creating unique areas based on my villager personalities. Sprinkle in the life sim AC features and the game is a fun and relaxing experience everytime I boot it up. The slow pace nature of the game really helps with that.
My favorite in the series. Planning to jump back in soon to get my tactical fix and play the blue lions scenario. Great game.
Edit - Sega needs to bring back Shining Force properly please and thank you. Heck, a port of a complete Shining Force 3 game would make me and strategy RPG fans very happy.
@Pojos98 Miitomo and Super Mario Run are the only Nintendo mobile games I spent a lot of time on. Miitomo was great because the good content were created by the users and having a bunch of Nintendo fans as friends can really create some fun conversations.
@Mountain_Man I recently started playing daily again (600 hours) after watching some streamers build their islands around themes, or “cores”, as they call it. It gave me a goal in the game and I like the slow pace nature of doing tasks. It’s going to take some time to complete these projects, but that’s sort of the point I think. It gives me a relaxing and zen like experience ever every time I play.
The game is fun and I do like the simpler version of the MOBA genre, but the monetization is questionable. Held items, battle items, and upgrades should not be monetized since it does give an advantage over other players.
Didn’t buy it and I was not expecting to play it, but I did borrow my brother’s copy to demo it. I like it a lot and will probably finish it. I honestly think it’s a masterpiece and would gladly purchase a copy at some point.
I think these obscure games on the service are great. I have other means of playing the classics, but there are so many great games and indies on the console already. Life is short with a lot of new games to experience.
Now if you’ll excuse, time to play Overwatch for the billionth time.
Sym is my favorite out of the bunch here. Will grab Mei’s skin also since I don’t have a decent skin for her and I do like to play her from time to time. I’m not very good with Ice wall placements.
The author clearly did not enjoy the game from what I read, but simply loved the game because of his passion for TLotR during a particular time of his life.
I also have my copy of the same game when I was a kid and I will never get rid of it because despite being frustrated with that game, I have very fond memories playing it with my brother. I played it because during that time I was falling in love with RPGs and would play anything RPG, even when I hated it.
Draken for the SNES is another stupid game I would not mind getting a hold of again.
@Zuljaras that’s great to hear. I played through Bravely Default 2 recently and that game has zero patches and no new content updates. It’s a complete full game on the cart.
Physical carts aren’t useless without patches. Most physical carts have a playable game on them without patches. It may not be complete, but I can understand why someone would opt for physical instead.
Played a few quick play games in handheld and it was good. I got grouped with mostly other console players and felt no difference in performance before the crossplay feature. Won all games and had a fun time.
It’s great because queue times are faster and the Switch is my way to play and now I’ll be able to play with friends on other consoles and even PC.
Nintendo is a great stock to invest in right now for the long term (at least 3 years). Fluctuations like these won’t matter in a couple of years and the dips are good buying opportunities.
There’s a lot to look forward to with Nintendo in the next couple years with sales doing very well and branching out to other entertainment businesses like theme parks and movies. There’s a lot of what Nintendo is doing right now that I like and I have faith that management will continue the momentum. Going to grab some shares.
As someone who has put over 1000 hours of Overwatch on PC, PS4, and Switch combined, Switch is definitely at a disadvantage when playing competitively due to latency, audio bugs, and unstable FPS during team fights with a lot going on.
12 mil plus? Did people buy the game because of her work? The game would have still been a success even without her artwork. People who were directly involved with development probably don’t get paid near as much.
@speedyboris Agreed. I actually like the bubble mechanic. Deciding which balls to use, juggling the bubble while avoiding hazards, timing the pops just right... it’s a satisfying and fun mechanic. Graphics and story is cute and charming. Music is bopping. It’s definitely a gem.

Love me some point and click adventure games. Thanks for all the recommendations. Might have to pick up Lair of the Clockwork God.
Played Sam and Max, Thimbleweed Park, and Jenny LeClue. I recommend all three. And yes, Monkey Island needs to be on Switch.

@Pojos98 Miitomo and Super Mario Run are the only Nintendo mobile games I spent a lot of time on. Miitomo was great because the good content were created by the users and having a bunch of Nintendo fans as friends can really create some fun conversations.
Re: Nintendo Says More Animal Crossing: New Horizons Content Is In Development, Next Update Drops This Week
Re: Pokémon Unite Survey Wants To Know Which Parts Of The Game Frustrate You
The game is fun and I do like the simpler version of the MOBA genre, but the monetization is questionable. Held items, battle items, and upgrades should not be monetized since it does give an advantage over other players.
Re: Just 10 Days Since Launch, Zelda: Skyward Sword HD Is Already Amazon's Third Best-Seller Of 2021
Didn’t buy it and I was not expecting to play it, but I did borrow my brother’s copy to demo it. I like it a lot and will probably finish it. I honestly think it’s a masterpiece and would gladly purchase a copy at some point.
Re: Nintendo Expands Its Switch Online SNES Service With Three More Titles
I think these obscure games on the service are great. I have other means of playing the classics, but there are so many great games and indies on the console already. Life is short with a lot of new games to experience.
Now if you’ll excuse, time to play Overwatch for the billionth time.
Re: Take A Look At The New Skins In Overwatch's Summer Update
Sym is my favorite out of the bunch here. Will grab Mei’s skin also since I don’t have a decent skin for her and I do like to play her from time to time. I’m not very good with Ice wall placements.
Re: Talking Point: Nintendo's Quirky Creativity Hasn't Always Paid Off On Switch, But It Matters
Weird Nintendo is the best Nintendo.
Re: Talking Point: Everyone Has A Bad Game They Love, So What's Yours?
The author clearly did not enjoy the game from what I read, but simply loved the game because of his passion for TLotR during a particular time of his life.
I also have my copy of the same game when I was a kid and I will never get rid of it because despite being frustrated with that game, I have very fond memories playing it with my brother. I played it because during that time I was falling in love with RPGs and would play anything RPG, even when I hated it.
Draken for the SNES is another stupid game I would not mind getting a hold of again.
Re: Capcom Confirms The Physical Copy Of Monster Hunter Stories 2 Will Not Require A Download
@Zuljaras that’s great to hear. I played through Bravely Default 2 recently and that game has zero patches and no new content updates. It’s a complete full game on the cart.
Re: Capcom Confirms The Physical Copy Of Monster Hunter Stories 2 Will Not Require A Download
Physical carts aren’t useless without patches. Most physical carts have a playable game on them without patches. It may not be complete, but I can understand why someone would opt for physical instead.
Re: Switch Overwatch Players Can Now Team Up With Xbox, PlayStation And PC Heroes
Re: Nintendo's Share Price Drops 6% Following E3 2021 Direct Broadcast And Switch Pro No-Show
Nintendo is a great stock to invest in right now for the long term (at least 3 years).
Re: Cross-Play Is Coming To Overwatch
As someone who has put over 1000 hours of Overwatch on PC, PS4, and Switch combined, Switch is definitely at a disadvantage when playing competitively due to latency, audio bugs, and unstable FPS during team fights with a lot going on.
Re: Capcom Facing $12 Million Lawsuit For Allegedly Using Artist's Photos Without Permission
12 mil plus? Did people buy the game because of her work? The game would have still been a success even without her artwork. People who were directly involved with development probably don’t get paid near as much.
Re: Nintendo Is Turning One Of Its Old Facilities Into A "Nintendo Gallery"
50 rupees that Blathers will be the tour guide and a coffee shop called The Roost will be there.
Nintendo has a very rich history and it would be awesome to see exhibits for some obscure stuff that got canceled like the WorkBoy or Earthbound 64.
Re: Mini Review: Spanky's Quest - Surprisingly Charming Monkey Business
@speedyboris Agreed. I actually like the bubble mechanic. Deciding which balls to use, juggling the bubble while avoiding hazards, timing the pops just right... it’s a satisfying and fun mechanic. Graphics and story is cute and charming. Music is bopping. It’s definitely a gem.
