After Splatoon 3 inked all over Japanese sales records over the weekend, it's perhaps no surprise that the success of Nintendo's squid-based shooter has caused the company's shares to surge. Bloomberg reports that Nintendo's share jumped 5.5% in Tokyo today, which means this is the biggest increase since December 2020.
Splatoon is a huge franchise in Japan, but its sales numbers have surpassed many people's expectations in Nintendo's home country. But as Kantan Games' analyst Serkan Toto points out, Splatoon 3 sales won't be the only thing helping out Nintendo's fortunes — "Nintendo will also sell a ton of new Switch units and online subscriptions" as a result of the shooter. That Splatoon 3 OLED also isn't half bad, is it?

This is likely very good news for Nintendo, which recently reported a decline in sales for Q1 2022/23, and that's before Pokémon Scarlet & Violet launched. We don't have figures for Splatoon 3's sales worldwide yet, however, we know that the game has topped this week's UK sales charts, so things are definitely looking good.

I'd really like to see the content from Splatoon 1+2 added to Splatoon 3 so that it doesn't get lost when the servers eventually shut down.
Wow people really are crazy for Splatoon 3.
If only Splatoon 3's success carried over to western audiences. I genuinely believe Nintendo has done well enough to justify a sequel, and I believe some people are really missing out.
Great news for Nintendo.
Kudos for who have interest with Splatoon games.
But I have my own interest on different games.
Once again, this is just more proof that even in just three games Splatoon has become one of Nintendo's biggest IPs, right up there with Mario and Zelda. It's even rivaling Pokémon at the moment! I'm looking forward to what more the game has in store with Splatfests and DLC!
@ModdedInkling Agreed, but for the more general public, they'll probably not see much of a difference between the games. That however could probably be said for plenty of series, so I guess it depends on how you look at it.
Personally I'm a Splatoon fan from the first hour though and I couldn't imagine a modern Nintendo console without an entry in this series anymore. It's so good!
You might even call it a super jump.
@ModdedInkling What makes you think it hasn't? We still have no sales records for anywhere else outside Japan. Not to mention that Splatoon 3 made it to the top spot of the UK's sale charts (see NL's article: https://www.nintendolife.com/news/2022/09/uk-charts-splatoon-3-inks-its-way-to-the-top-spot), and the game seems to be in the top spot of the eShop's charts across multiple regions
@ModdedInkling It was number 1 in UK so is successful apparently. You shouldn’t pay too much attention to the rumblings on NintendoLife since there are a disproportionate number of negative comments on here. Based on the comments here, you’d think that the Pokémon games wouldn’t sell at all.
So nothing to do with the announcement of a direct then?
Yeah I’m happy to hear it’s doing well. I’ve really enjoyed playing thru it. The story modes been excellent and the multiplayers been great. I’m having more of a challenge with this one in turf war than I have with any other. I’ve found that weapons I once was good with aren’t working for me anymore. Currently Dualies, the zapper, and the umbrella shot have been serving me well. Rollers and sloshers I just can’t do well with.
@dew12333 probably a little, but directs are speculation and the games are just new things to speculate. Splatoon 3 insane launch in Japan is cold hard cash baby, it’s system seller there
@roboshort
I don't think sales are bad in west. In my personal experience, I have not seen so many folks playing the same new game on my friendslist since ACNH was released. I have like 15 friends playing Splatoon same time. Even Xenoblade didn't ping that often at release.
Will be interested to see what effect Splatoon had on hardware sales this week.
If you are an investor, Splatoon, Pokémon and BOTW before FY end, Nintendo is looking a good bet.
@Anti-Matter we are well aware of your interest’s
Cap, my shares are still down almost 16% since then.
I'm happy this is a home run. It's so good!
Kind of glad I'll be passing on this round of Splatoon, I don't miss the endless moon speak named try hards. While 2 was pretty fun, not enough changed to get me to bite on it.
I love that Splatoon 3 Switch OLED model, but I can’t justify buying it when I spend 99% of the time playing mine docked!
@ModdedInkling I like Splatoon, but if I could swap its level of popularity with Kid Icarus Uprising, I'd do it in a heartbeat. Most of the negativity you see is from people like me who are sitting here with a handful of neglected IPs while a new series that targets a different audience sees repeated success. It's frustrating, and makes it very easy to become hostile.
Game been great so far; except that it seems not polished?
Or maybe the server load is too much?
Salmon run is broken for me; after finishing every time, I get a connection error. Same on the regular modes sometimes, which is annoying. Worse of all the game threatens you to ban you temporarily, and it happened yesterday :/
I want to, but I just can't seem to get into Splatoon. I think it's also partially the gyro aiming on a pro controller (I know you can turn this off, but then I think you're at a disadvantage and it defeats the purpose of how the game is intended to be played)- maybe if it was played with a Wii-mote I might feel better about it. Also also.. It's random, but also always think of Bloopers from Mario when I see Splatoon, think they should've integrated some sort of connection.
I'm also not as into shooters as I once was, but I'd be interested in new entries of these coming to Switch:
... Wun can only hope.
@AlternateRT
Primarily looking at North American audience being so enticed about having the best hardware and graphics, playing Fortnite and all sorts of games that take out any sort of intent to try and play other games.
@Baler I don't know either why comment on an article about X game if said person had no interest in X game. Doesn't drive discussion and feels pointless imo.
With that said, love to see it, I've been in love with Splatoon ever since the first game and I'm delighted to see the positive reception and sales even after seeing online backlash saying the third entry was unnecessary. Yet another reminder we should never take internet doom and gloom at face value.
