Sega Corporation has today announced Sonic the Hedgehog 2 has now surpassed global box office sales of $331.64 million - speeding past the $319.71 million sales record set by the original film in 2020.
It follows on from the movie experiencing the biggest opening for a video game movie ever - grossing $72.1 million in the US within the first three days. The original banked $58.01 million in the same time frame. The film's US box office gross has reached $162.74 million, surpassing the previous film's $148.97 million.
Outside of this location, Sonic's second movie has debuted across 47 different markets in the top spot. It's not done yet, either - with a Japan release of the movie due out this August. Have you been to the cinema to see Sonic the Hedgehog 2 yet? Leave a comment down below.

I'm just waiting for this to come out on 4K Blu Ray and I must admit the wait is killing me. It's supposedly coming out mid July.
I'm happy for it. I didn't particularly enjoy the movie, but I'm glad that it's doing well.
Am I the only one that was lukewarm on the movie? I don't think it was as good as the first and that one was ok. Does it really deserve to be the highest grossing video game movie of all time?
With that said I don't have particularly high hopes for the Mario movie.
So does this mean we’ll start to see more video game adaptations?
@Spoony_Tech I think for a movie like this to hit home you had to of grown up with Sonic since the beginning. If you didn't start playing the games until later years I don't think it will have as much of an impact. I know with Detective Pikachu I had a blast watching it but that's because I've been playing Pokèmon since day one, well it's the same with Sonic. I haven't even seen this movie yet and I already know I'm going to enjoy it.
I wonder what the 3rd movie will be like.
@WeLiveInASociety I guess they’ll bring in Shadow to be the villain because apparently Jim Carey is taking an extended sabbatical from movies.
I’m waiting for it to come out on paramount but I’m so happy that it’s doing good for a video game movie, they actually cared about the movie, and wanted it to do well,
And this film’s success seems to be seeping into the sonic video games, I hope sonic has a better future, and can’t wait too see the Mario movie!
@Nameless_Shame I hope they don’t mess up his character more than they already did in Shadow The Hedgehog and nearly every game after that. I miss the Shadow from the Sonic Adventure games.
@WeLiveInASociety Shadow was pretty amazing in 06 but he’s been awful in everything else post SA2. He was ok in Heroes but that was the start of his decline.
With that big of a gross the third movie is likely going to be epic. Shadow, Amy, and Rouge all needs to be in the next movie.
Really want to see the Shadow stuff, I know many things will be different and that's part of the fun, but I hope they keep certain things like Maria and Shadow's motive. Sonic going to prison? Probably not, seeing how Sonic getting captured and rescued by friends was already done in this movie.
Seeing Jim Carrey play an old version of his character would be interesting but it will probably not make it into the film for obvious reasons.
Isn't warcraft the top grossing videogame adaptation of all time?
I've seen sources that say differently. Maybe it's on track to be the highest grossing? Maybe the numbers are murky?
@Goat_FromBOTW Yeah, I really do hope they fix him, he was my favourite Sonic character.
@Purgatorium Domestic (USA) Box Office. Detective Pikachu is number 1 worldwide
@WeLiveInASociety The third movie will be broken up into two films with each having a running time of 1hr and 15 minutes. That way they can charge you twice for the single experience. Also, Sonic will revert back to his original look in the trailer for the first film.
There is no such thing as "Of all time" that would indicate that there will be nothing better. How many films has reached that title only to lose it to a higher grossing film? Thus it has no real meaning.
World of Warcraft is higher still. So it’s not the top. Close to it but still not there especially with inflation added.
@thinkhector I couldn’t tell if you were being serious or not, but then I read your last sentence lol. Although it would be kinda cool to split it into two parts like the original game. It could be pretty epic if they do it right.
Wow, Japan hasn’t got it yet? That must drive sonic fans there nuts!
I've updated this post.
@Serpenterror Hopefully we see Jet. He's my favorite plus, considering how many Sonic racing games there are it would be cool to see some racing in the next one. Whether it's hoverboards or cars.
@Torakaka Then why people still use that term, "Of All Time" if it has no meaning to it? What would you use if you have want to make your own Top 5 or 10 of favorite movies?
The one thing I will point out about this story not meaning much, is that the first film was one of the final films released in theaters before the pandemic shut everything down. It had an extremely truncated run, lasting only 5 weeks. It probably would have grossed a fair amount more if theaters hadn't closed.
Fell asleep twice and never ended up finishing it. Was basically trudging through most of it waiting for Carrey scenes and even those were just alright.
Just watched it it was great
My son watched it with his friends on a birthday party and they all loved it. He was all excited when he came back, couldn't stop talking about it and looking forward to the third movie.
People need to understand the target demographic. This is aimed at today's kids, not us old farts who happened to play the original games back in the 90's!
@Torakaka I think it's obvious what it means. It's just a simpler way of saying "Highest Grossing Movie Out of All the Movies that Have Been Released Previously". No need to overthink the term.
@RubyCarbuncle I mean I started my playthrough through the sonic series back when mania launched, and still had a blast (I didn't really enjoy the first one). While I definitely don't think it's anywhere close to being the best movie of the year for me (I'm more of an indie movie watcher rather than a blockbuster fan), I had a great time, so I can't say nostalgia played as large a factor as you may think. (I also went with a large group of friends who only started playing Sonic recently, if at all, and they enjoyed it a lot.)
@Jeronan This is exactly why I think the movie was so good. It had just the right amount of service to make us old fans happy while still achieving its main motive of securing its new target audience's attention. A fine line that I think it did well
The power of mothers and their young Sonic fans.
I was kind of at a crossroads with Sonic 2.
On the one hand, I enjoyed almost all of it, and was really hyped when they did the tease at the end.
On the other hand, my family just could not get into it, except for my little brother. Maybe it just appealed more to continuous fans of the series?
went with my 5 year old daughter, had a blast.
I went and saw it after leaving work early to go to the doctor on Wednesday. I was the only one in the theater which improved my experience, I think, because I got to yell at the characters on the screen. It was fun.
@Torakaka It doesn’t mean that though, does it? “Of all time” in a context like this is referring to everything that came before it. It’s not making any claims about the future. This is grammatical nit-picking of the highest order.
@valharian Yes, and Detective Pikachu made more than Sonic 2 as well, so I'm not sure why they posted this article 🤔.
I enjoyed the first Sonic movie quite a bit, but the second one I was constantly fighting falling asleep. It had a few good jokes, but overall it was a really boring action movie.
My kids expected the sequel to blow away the original, but they found it to be a letdown as well.
These high sales are a testament to the quality of Sonic 1 more than the quality of Sonic 2, IMO. (And the lack of movies in the theater in general).
@Abeedo Ahh good to hear I'm glad you enjoyed it 👍
@Spoony_Tech video game movies don’t exactly setup a high bar. Sonic is easily top 3 at least
Im glad its doing well, giant robotnik stole the movie for me
I've said it here before but again just for the record, I loved this movie. As a fan, I enjoyed it waaaay more than the first, even though I really liked that one too.
As someone who has produced many feature films and occasionally writes and directs them, it clearly wasn't perfect, and if I switch the critical part of my brain on I could pick it to pieces and wax lyrical about its flaws for hours. But the simple fact remains, this film made me happier and I enjoyed my time in the cinema more than pretty much any other film I've seen since I was a kid. I came out of the cinema buzzing and was pretty much all I could think about for a solid week after.
The next day, I was in the supermarket and I saw a family, 2 parents around my age, and 2 little kids, a brother and sister, I'd guess around 6 and 8. They had 3 plushies, a Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles, and they were happily and excitedly playing with them, running round making them fly and fight and work together towards beating the clearly huge hoards of invisible badniks filling in the supermarket isles and attacking their parent's shopping cart. It made me really emotional that not just old fans like me liked the film, but it had really excited and sparked the imagination of a new generation,
who not only wanted to buy the merch to put on shelves like us oldies do, but were actually bonding over playing with them and making happy memories.
I'll definitely be going back to watch it a few more times on the big screen before the end of its run, its a film that deserves a big screen. But I also can't wait til I can own it and watch it at home as many times as I want... and probably make my own version where I edit out some of the bits I didn't like and make it "perfect" lol
