If you've so much as glanced at our home page over the past couple of days, you'll no doubt be aware that today sees the launch of Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity on Nintendo Switch.
The game mixes the characters, locations and story of Zelda: Breath of the Wild with the strategic, hack 'n slash action of the Warriors franchise. It's set 100 years before the events of Breath of the Wild, meaning fans can finally see just how all the events discussed in Link's most recent adventure truly went down.
With Breath of the Wild being the absolute behemoth that it is, you'd naturally assume that a prequel would sell like hotcakes. However, not everyone is a fan of the Warriors gameplay style, so we're left with a curious release that might divide the Zelda fanbase at launch.
So, we hand it over to you. Make sure to have your say in our poll below so that we can find out once and for all just how popular the game is with the Nintendo Life community. Feel free to expand upon your answer in the comments below!

Yep but I'm in no real rush to play it and ordered my copy online so won't have it till Monday or Tuesday.
My copy has arrived, so I'll start playing it in a little while.
I find nothing more disappointing than an E3 reveal that is Zelda only to find out it's just another mediocre Warriors title.
Not yet, but soon enough!
Nope until a patch solving the issues is out.
@Misfit410 But it wasn’t at E3, and the video it was revealed in said “Hyrule Warriors” in the title.
I’m getting this for Christmas, looking forward to it.
Nope. You can't slap a Zelda skin on something I have no interest in and expect me to buy it.
Not for me, the decision to cut online multiplayer in a warrior game makes this a hard pass.
Would love to have it now, but have to wait for my birthday. 10th Dec. Not long I guess, just have to try avoid spoilers
I want to get it. But its not a burning itch, especially after the demo. More interested in Immortals or whatever that Ubi game is called now, because I love Greek myth, and Sniper Elite 4.
Getting it but certainly not today. Probably not before I beat and see all of BotW's main plot campaign, for that matter.
I am buying it, probably more out of desperation than anything. Probably the only game from Nintendo I have actually been interested in this year.
I tried the demo for 10 minutes on my Switch.
Impressive looking game and I was tempted, but after 5 minutes the musou gameplay showed its ugly face.
It's not so much the enemy count. It's nice enough. No it's the running around the map constantly, finding the next big batch of enemies.
I'd rather fire up my Vita and play some Earth Defense Force. I honestly think I've had my share of musou games (Berserk on Vita was at least decent, though - I actually finished that one).
No I can only play one game at a time, and there is Immortals Fenyx Rising, and Sniper Elite 4 which come first, as well as the Mario's
Nope. I plan on planting rice all the weekend tho!
I’m tempted. I’ll be popping into one of the major supermarkets shortly. If it’s in there abs £45 ish, I’ll likely crumble. The demo was okay
Never played a Musou before, but I enjoyed the demo so I ordered a physical copy.
That copy hasn't shipped yet unfortunately but I'm alright with waiting a bit.
All installed and ready to go, looking forward to some quality time with it later on.
Eventually maybe. The Pre-order content didn't really make me want to buy it more than normal, plus Black Friday is only a week away and deals have already started so I'd rather get a lot of the things already on my wishlist cheaper than a brand new game at full price.
No, while I love BotW I just can't get into Warriors games
Maybe after I play the first Hyrule Warriors, I have it for the Wii U, but I've heard the switch version is greatly improved, so maybe I'll pick that up
No, tried the demo (my first real experience with Warriors) and it wasn’t for me.
I'll probably get it for Christmas. I never buy games between mid November and Christmas, because then what would I get on Christmas day?
Waiting on Best Buy to open. Hurry up, hurry up!
I loved the first Hyrule Warriors, though that game's story was non-canon compared to AoC. I'll be picking this up at some point...after playing Breath of the Wild.
@lacaras4 Hyrule Warriors Definitive Edition imo is worth the price point. I bought it for $30 on ebay and don't regret it. It's a great muso game and I feel like theres more characters that I like in that one.
Nope! My Nintendo Coupon ran out on the 31 October so I had decided otherwise. Sorry Nintendo... its your fault!
I've always been tempted by the musou genre, but resisted for one reason or another. As soon as I knew it was related to BOTW, it was a no brainer for me, and I really enjoyed the demo (having read extensively about musou games, the issues from the demo weren't shocking to me). My other half has bought it for me for Xmas, so will no doubt spend most of January putting in the hours. Hopefully I enjoy it because I also want to get the Persona 5 musou spin off when that comes out.
Yup. Gotta finish it by 3rd December too so I can sell it once CEX/Game reopen in England.
Always good to finish a full priced game and it only cost around a tenner or less in reality.
For the life of me I can’t figure out why Musou is so hated (seemingly). You have a goal to complete and like in strategy RPGs if you fail or the enemy takes over a stronghold you fail so lots of strategy is needed. You cut down swaths of enemies at a time making you feel like a veritable god of death reaping them left and right doing flashy combos and attacks that take out hundreds of cannon fodder at a time! Man what a rush Musou is!
Nope, played a musou game once and for only like 5minutes then sold it immediately. The story looks good, but the gameplay won’t keep me hooked. Gonna rather save my cash for Cyberpunk
I don't have the time to play longer games like this one anymore... I might buy it eventually once I'm inevitably forced to go back to home office hahahaha
Arrived yesterday, played through the first level. Impa is more fun than Link and the performance is ..... ok. It's not the framerate as such but more the skipped animation frames which I don't like, but it's not a deal breaker.
Will be getting it tomorrow since sadly I am currently stuck at work. Still tomorrow afternoon I will likely be running into battle
I've only played one Warriors game before. (on the PS2) I'm not sure if it's changed much since then but I don't think this is for me. I find them too repetitive.
I pre-ordered it and it will be a Christmas present.
Eventually! Did a complete run of dynasty warriors 8 and warriors orochi 3 a few months back so I'm all musoued out!
Just picked up mine some moments ago.
Waiting to buy it second hand for 30-35€ - that's how I bought Paper Mario as well es Yoshi's Crafted World. Each for 30€ and Metro Redux for 25
Honestly, I couldn’t play it if I wanted to. Too much neon flashing, hurts my eyes.
I'm in the less common group of people who didn't like Breath of the Wild, but absolutely loved Hyrule Warriors and the Zelda series. I've been so torn on this game because it combines a game I love and one I don't.
I played the demo, and it was decent but didn't grip me like Hyrule Warriors, as the BotW changes made it feel less colourful, and uses characters and featurea that appeal to me less (Runes vs traditional Zelda items).
I feel like there's probably a solid game there that I may very well enjoy, but it didn't give me the excited buzz I got when I got my hands on Hyrule Warriors. So it's not a day one buy, but I do plan to pick it up and give it a good shot when I can.
Probably not getting it for a while. At least not until after I manage to secure a PS5
I've pre-ordered it so should be arriving today. I'm going to exercise some self restraint and give it to myself for Christmas. Currently replaying BOTW so should Hyrule should be fresh in my mind when I start this.
Tbh playing the demo made me want to replay botw more than I wanted to play a warriors game. Still it's Zelda... so I had to buy it 😁
This isn't a day-1 game for me. Reviews have been better than expected, but I've got plenty in my backlog that I'm enjoying between now and Christmas. See if someone decides to get it for me then.
Nope, just not for me which is a pity.
Musou games aren’t really my thing. I’ll try the demo to see if I like it, but I probably won’t.
Nope. Glad they had a demo, not my type of game.
I want to see the story, but I know I won’t play it. Wait for a YouTube cutscenes video.
Loving it.
Fusing weapons should have been in Breath of the Wild.
Here is a theory, the egg guardian thing is actually reality jumping to another reality of hyrule that is saveable since the first one failed,it is very similar to the original but in this one they win.I am excited for the game I am going to pick it up in the afternoon
Predownloaded my copy. Can't wait to try it once I'm home from work 👌🏽
Already played a couple of hours, it's good fun. It's definitely more Zelda than Warriors this time compared to the first Hyrule Warriors game.
Already got my yesterday night. Yup I am a fan boy of this game. I love the 1st one and have it on Switch and N3DSXL.
Nope. No interest in an arcade Zelda game. Waiting for BOTW 2
Arrived today with a lovely notebook, postcards, poster etc. Safely tucked away for my sons Christmas present. He's sunk a good 10-15 hours into the demo, loves it!
Calamity won't stop me, but Amazon will.
Sending it as 24 hour to Guernsey, it might turn up on Monday, but probably Tuesday.
Preordered long ago... but it’s for my son for Christmas. Pikmin3 already bought and put away, and if he’s really lucky he may just get Animal Crossing too.
Calamity won't stop me, but that price tag will.
The thing is that I played over 5 hours of the Demo having way to much fun so I think I will get this for Christmas.
Naw I'm alright. I really do miss that Nintendo polish.
I’m not getting it. I tried the demo and it’s not for me. I usually find these games repetitive, and this is no exception. Kinda makes me sad though as I love BOTW and the art style of both games. Hopefully Fenyx Rising turns out okay on the Switch to scratch that adventure game itch.
Anybody else unable to claim gold points yet on their copy? I don’t recall having this error before. My switch tells me gold points are “not yet available” or some such.
Pre-ordered on the eShop Wednesday and it downloaded yesterday.
I abhor paying full price for games, especially ones that will almost certainly be on sale in months and almost also certainly have paid dlc but sometimes the timing is just right.
In this case Amazon had 25% back on eshop credit, so I bought $99, got my money back into my checking account, so I kind of feel like I got this 25% off. And more importantly we pick my son up from college this weekend - he's a freshman so first time away and back - and he and his brother can play this before he goes back to campus after the holidays. Plus my wife and I can play together. She watched me play some BotW, she'll tag along.
45% yes in the poll, not too bad. Guess it's good to be Switch non-port big holiday game. Lot of people getting Immortals instead. I'm waiting for a sale and the 3 parts of dlc for that one.
@rdm22 For a strange specific question like that you might want to include your country and the country you're downloading the game from if different, could be a regional thing. Say if you were in Germany but had an account set up for Japan. People do that, this a very international site.
I'm conflicted, I both enjoyed the demo + also saw how it could get repetitive gameplay wise. The premise of the story seems exciting though.
If everything goes well, I may have it before midday. Hope all of you who get it, that you can enjoy the game
Edit: For some reason, the game hasn't arrived in my close Walmart. I guess I have to call the store to see when it arrives.
@AmplifyMJ What a nice parent! Make sure you raise that child right and get them Dark Souls and Skyrim!
It's already waiting for me on the switch after my work day
I played the demo and my brother got his copy early in the mail yesterday so I’ve seen the beginning of the game twice now. It’s pretty fun but definitely a bit tedious. The first stage took longer to complete than I would have liked. That being said, it’s still a fun game with a cool story so I’ll be picking it up eventually, just don’t know when exactly. I’m trying to stop my game buying addiction until I finish off most of my backlog.
I voted for undecided myself, I might pick it up eventually, but right now I am trying to save some money so a big purchase isn't on the cards.
Genuinely undecided still... so I feel I should wait for now. Demo was OK, but still not a genre I'm a huge fan of...
Pretty sure my wife pre-ordered it for me for Christmas. If not, then I will buy it for New Years!
Option: No, I'll co-op the game with my friend and his copy of the game.
A sale would be nice, until then...
When this was announced, I got super hyped as I love BOTW and haven't played any Warriors game till now. Since the demo dropped, I started to lose interest, as I found out what the grind is like, on top of the framerate issues. Now having watched several gameplay videos (which enforce the idea of repetitive gameplay) and having come to know about some of the story elements, I'm not so sure about it anymore. Maybe on a sale, but then again Nintendo's games almost never go below 40 dollars, which seems high for this one.
NOPE ... tried the demo: first of all is boring like hell, second there are TOO MANY frame drops, third resolution is s***
in my opinion this game was developed in a hurry to overcome the delays of the really expected games due to the covid ... and this is the result
I’ll put it this way: I played the demo and I have no plans to get it. It for sure put a nail in my Warriors games coffin. Fire Emblem Warriors was my first I’ve ever bought. And I just can’t get into it. This was my second attempt and although it is better, it’s just the same gameplay. And what really drives it home is that it makes me just want to play BotW. I absolutely love the premise of the game but I feel it would’ve been better as a prologue section in the next game or something. Not a full game of it. I get burnt out real quick mashing buttons.
@rjejr thanks for the tip. I just tried again and it worked, so it was just yesterday I couldn’t do it. But thank you for the insight!
Does pushsquare do this, or no? Just asking because for a bunch of "fanboys", Nintendo sites seem to bend over backwards to appear unbiased.
It's the sort of thing that you can play after work when you can't really think.
Like, I want it to do well, but I haven’t even beaten BOTW, and I’m more interested in some of the games in my backlog, including new additions like Pikmin 3 Deluxe and Sakuna.
I got Okami for £7.99 and Monster Hunter Generations for £14.79 instead
I don't like Warriors games so it's a pass for me.
Tried the demo. It was the first warriors game I have ever tried. I didn't really enjoy it. May pick it up if I ever saw it cheap, just for the story.
Nah. Not yet anyway. I'll be waiting either for a good sale, or for a 'Definitive' edition, whichever comes first.
Really torn on starting to buy games digitally or stay with physical
Well I can't get unit my birthday so rip..
I was planning to but what I've heard about the story is giving me a lot of reservations. The first mission of the demo was fun but I'm worried the gameplay will become tedious so if the story isn't up to par then there will be nothing drawing me in. I don't want to waste my money or my time.
The demo was fun, and I love BotW, but the direction they went with the story really rubs me the wrong way, so I'll be holding off for now.
Am I the only one waiting for the inevitable re-release in years to come?
I was not particularly offended by frame pacing issues, though they were noticeable. No, it was the resolution that troubled me. A huge part of the appeal of this release is seeing Hyrule again, this time more or less intact (and yes, even in the midst of mob scenes); the landscape ethic of BOTW was an immense hook for me. I found it difficult to see past the blurriness when I was verily outside Hyrule Castle, shining and whole.
Does this mean that the Switch has finally met (and failed to make) its technical match?
It's not for me. I didn't like the first Hyrule Warriors that much and the demo didn't impress me either. They're a little too button mashy for me.
I'm taking my cat to the vet today, so I'm making that my first priority money-wise...
I preordered mine so that I can pick it up on day one the moment the store opens. Going to have a lot of fun with this game.
Nope, no desire!!!
Will get it in a couple weeks and I cant wait.
I have no love for musou games, yet I thought a Zelda coating would be enough to get me through the first Hyrule Warriors.
I was wrong and won't make the same mistake again.
I was sooo excited to play this, but I'm waiting for a patch that fix the frame rate issues. Co-op is a huge deal to me and if it dips into the the teens frame-rate wise, that sounds fairly unplayable. When the problem gets fixed it's an insta-buy.
@rdm22 You're welcome. I never checked mine, I was too distracted by the obnoxious $5.42 tax. 😝
I'll be getting it for my husband as one of his Christmas gifts. And when he gets bored of it, I'll take the cartridge and play. HA! For now I'm good with the demo and all the other games I have to play. Plus, the OG Fire Emblem is coming out December 4th and that will have my attention for a while!
Nope not getting
Not touching that jittery mess!
@rjejr have a great weekend, enjoy having your son home
I'm passing on this for now until issues are fixed, if not then no worries, more money I don't need to spend is for the best.
Definitely something I want, as I enjoy the occasional mousou and loved Hyrule Warriors on the 3DS. But not immediately or even very soon. I have a lot of games I need to catch up on before this.
Hope ya'll like that ending!
Holy moly!!!! The story!! Beautiful plot now i def cant wait for breath of the wild 2!
@AmplifyMJ Thanks, will do. Just had the car in for an oil change, good to go.
I would love to get it someday, but I just don't have the income right now to do that. =(
@AndyC_MK84 don’t kid yourself....I’ve played it.
IGN review lol....Worthless
First day one purchase since Dynasty Warriors 4 for PS2 in 2003. What can I say - I'm one of those people who actually like musou games
Yes please. Please yes. Looking fwd to my physical copy when it eventually arrives!
I liked the first HW game and liked the demo of this game. I also thought BOTW was one of THE greatest games of all time. I wonder if THAT is a common camp in itself. I don't think it is.
It was a "Interested and I'll get it eventually" title, then I saw that Nintendo store had all those freebies for preordering, plus the competition to win the figures. And of course the ladle dlc
The lesson being that marketing works?
I've tried the demo. Not my kind of game.
Yes and it came today! I will be playing this from 21:30 tonight!!! Time for calamity!
@AndyC_MK84 played 2 hours to be honest it runs better than most of their other DW games lol. but the art style and graphics are really cool. now put some cooling packs on my fingers.
Not a fan of musou style games sadly.
Absolutely! I love Zelda, enjoy Musou titles, and thought the demo was great fun.
Got it one day early yesterday and loving it so far.
I am playing it now and I like the mechanics better in the original Hyrule Warriors. That being said, I’ve only played about 40 minutes of it. So I better get cracking and maybe my opinion will change.
(Spoilers)i will play this alternatine take of the Great Calamity along side Monster Hunter Rise, in my birthday in early april(april 10th).
The physical game is more than 400 reais here in Brazil (like 80 dollars) and the minimun wage here is 1000 reais. I might get it digital, but I don't have enough space in my SD card. Those are though times
Maybe someday on a heavy sale.
Got it. Played it. Love it!
No. I’m interested in the story, but have no desire to play this type of game. I played the demo and if I had bought the whole game I’d have lost interest in mashing buttons somewhere around where the demo ended. I’m sure someone will put up a YouTube video of all the cutscenes and some point and I’ll watch that and get filled in on all I’m interested. Played through BOTW twice FWIW. Probably logged more hours on that than have on any other game ever.
I wanna see if they can fix the performance issues, if they can I'll buy it new if not I might wait till I can buy it used.
I got it 20% cheaper physically than digitally, so i bought it on day 1.
Got it. And yes, its awesome. I especially like the cutscenes videos and artwork for the characters.
I pre-ordered the game for my brother for his birthday.
I was very surprised that it’s almost like a modern TMNT arcade game with the Zelda franchise. Really loved the art style used from Breath of the Wild, certainly an interesting decision to give it a more quality feel. Personally felt the handheld mode was just fine. Haven’t experienced any slow downs. Again coming from someone who plays SOR4, Final Fight, Simpsons, and Ninja Turtles I really enjoyed the arcade style of play, mixed in with some nice dialogue scenes for the story.
I preordered the game, yet first beat MHW Fatalis, a monster I have never fought before, so it took me 2 days to finally defeat it with the right equipment. Then I was very happy, because that allowed me to play Age of Calamity. I already liked the original Hyrule Warriors which I have on Wii U, so this one looked even better to me. What I like about Nintendo games is their coziness, they are hard, but not exhausting and this is good for body and soul.
