This is an odd attempt at dragging Sony through the mud considering the PS5 Pro recently got announced at $700 and their ex-president suggested laid-off employess just drive for Uber for a year. There's plenty of ammo guys.
And if 'copying' 3D Mario is a means of getting Sony out of their western third-person Narrative Experience rut then by all means, copy-paste away.
Pikmin is a frustrating series for me. The controls of 1 are tough to return to (and this is coming from someone who passionately defends Mario 64) but the timer was a huge part of the challenge. There's something very rewarding in the process of plotting out efficient routes, rushing back to base at night, learning not to kamikaze everything, etc.
I've found the lack of strategy very dull since then, with the okay-ish combat and (very) tedious puzzle dungeons not exactly sweetening the pot.
Here's a fun piece of Famitsu trivia: They had a contract sometime in the 2000s assuring all Square Enix games would get a minimum of 28/40 (7/7/7/7). Dirge of Cerberus was so bad Famitsu delayed the review to let word of mouth speak for itself, then they slapped DoC with a 28/40 when the damage was done.
The bar for Switch ports keeps getting lowered when "well at least they got it running!" is the baseline for acceptability (though I can't imagine any sane person wanting to experience Deliverance like this)
No. Nintendo needs at least a 2-3 year cooldown on 2D Mario, especially after a massive critical darling like Wonder, lest we suffer the same kind of fatigue that sent the NSMB series into dormancy. Besides, it's about time for a new 3D Mario.
I don't think the 3DS is retro; my cutoff line is the early 360 era. Online play further standardized, HD capability, digital games: those are the last major developments in gaming as a whole, if you ask me. It's not so much about the years that have past as it is the gaming landscape, which is why Chrono Trigger would have been retro in like 2004. The leap from SNES to PS2 was only 9 years but consider the massive advancements in graphics and processing power, along with the 2D-3D leap. The advancements in tech from PS4 to PS5 (or Xbone to XSeries if you're so inclined) have been incremental.
It would also be nice if they didn't shove a ton of gimmicks in the controllers to jack up prices/make them more prone to failure. But that's kind of the norm at this point so I'm not holding my breath.
I would imagine the performance runs fine on Switch for games that are 20+ years old, but also if there's one company I expect to [redacted] everything up out of sheer laziness (if not utter contempt for gamers who refuse to participate in the pachinko-mobage industrial complex), then it's absolutely Konami.
Anyway, I feel uneasy giving any amount of money to Konami in TYOL 2023. I'll stick to dusting off my PS3 whenever I feel the need to replay 2 or 3.
I'm so stoked for the privilege to pay $60 for a remaster that has less content than when I bought it on the PS3 for $50, especially after Konami has shown such contempt for Kojima.
The idea of Detective Pikachu was kind of funny at first but it's not a joke that warrants a sequel, live action movie, and/or possible spin-off franchise
@FishyS Scores can vary wildly depending on context. For me a 9/10 game is typically a top 50 personal all-timer, and after a year or so if it really digs its way into the ol' memory banks I'll consider labeling it a 10/10 (Resident Evil 4 [2005] territory).
Good CRTs are being slurped up by collectors (the great majority of whom are jackasses if you ask me) and getting increasingly harder to find at thrift shops. At least in my experience. I'll keep an eye on this.
From what I've read on HG101, 2 and 5 are the highlights of the series. Can anyone confirm or deny that? FM2 Remake was a must-buy at first but I'm worried about the spotty localization. That said, the only fan translation was abandoned a while back and half of it was a .txt file - or so I've heard.
Not a Sonic fan but I really like it when publishers have artwork inside the game cases. It feels like a reasonable replacement for game manuals. Not a fan of when they change the spine though, as it clashes with the rest of the library.
Also, a high profile game getting anything less than like a 36/40 from Famit$u is usually a red flag lol.
This is why I'm so weary about REmake 4 — the attempt at making it more "grounded"/serious really spits in the face of the original RE4's artistic direction.
I've taken to naming all characters Sneed. But when I play Final Fantasy games I like being a smartass and naming the protag Cloud. If I'm replaying FFVII then I name him Squall.
I find it much better if you disregard any sort of traditional FPS pretenses and just let aim-assistance do the legwork. It plays more like a pre-mouselook shooter that way. I love how the difficulties have varying objectives that require you to explore more of the level the harder it's set on. Wish more games did that.
I remember thinking 1. Damn, these are some of the most meh tech demos I've ever seen (in terms of pizzaz and presentation - even the Zelda one felt sterile) and 2. Damn, Nintendo console codenames are always better than the finalized name (Dolphin, Revolution, Cafe, and later NX)
Inventory management was one of the small things I really loved about RE4. I mean I love everything about RE4, but inventory tetris was one of those small touches that made it great.
This is totally left field but I started playing Finny the Fish, a forgotten PS2 game published by Natsume in 2004. I saw it at ye olde game shoppe a few years back and bought it mostly because it was $15 and looked weird. It's okay so far.
I would prefer at least one more 64-style game that focuses on exploration, since the period of Galaxy - 3D World was the A to B linear formula. An Odyssey sequel is perfectly fine but I think I would want something that branches out as I think Odyssey explored all its mechanics to their fullest extent.
