Yep, this completely passed us by as well. Chex Quest was a 1996 non-violent shooter that launched on PCs in North America-only. It's a conversion of The Ultimate Doom, an updated version of the hugely influential Doom, and is famous for being the first-ever video game you could get in a cereal box. Ah, the '90s. You can't really promote a box of cereal if you're being violent, can you?
Despite poor critical reviews, hindsight has been kind to this crunchy FPS, as it's essentially a mod of another video game. The game saw two sequels and built up a small fanbase for its quirky premise and reliable gameplay.
In 2020, Chex Quest HD launched on Steam for free, and from 11th March everyone will be able to play this corporate crispy bowl of zorches and snacks on the go on their Switch. (Thanks, Nintendo Everything!)
The game will cost $4.99, which is probably about the same price as a box of cereal nowadays. To be honest many of us hadn't even heard of the original, likely because of its regional availability, but this trailer will get you up to speed; it might even bring back some very specific memories for some of you.

Shoot, I'm down for that! Bring over the other Chex Quest games too!
Is this going to be the catalyst to get remastered versions of other brand games like Chester Cheetah and Ronald McDonald?
That's terrifying.
It's wild how a game that existed as a literal advertisement for cereal was not only a relatively decent game, but is so fondly remembered by two or three generations of people now.
Now we nead Sneak-King HD!
Are they cereal?
Well, I needed something to spend my stupid Gold My Nintendo points on. This will do.
The best thing to do with chex, muddie buddies. Delicious.
@Not_Soos Why terrifying? I'd adore for them to come back, if only for there to be several fewer games locked behind those older platforms. Plus, Pepsiman. Do I need to say anything other than Pepsiman?
@Not_Soos I’d take some “The Noid” games or that 7Up Spot game… there’s a few fun ones.
Would love to see a new Noid game with hyper-photorealistic claymation style animation, 4K HDR, bloom lightning—no NOT bloom lightning (lol), ray tracing, the works!
Yessssssss. I loved this game as a kid. I used to play it on the family PC as a kid with my siblings. I have played the new one on Steam and it holds up to my memories. To be totally honest here, don't expect anything other than a basic shooter with loads of secrets, but I still love it.
Definitely grabbing this on the Switch!
I legitimately loved this game as a teenager. I played through it so many times and really enjoyed trying to hunt down all the secrets in each level.
I know it's "just a Doom clone" but somehow I had more fun with this than with the Doom games. Maybe because it's so utterly ridiculous to "Zorch Flemoids."
I am disappointed by the HD graphics. Not sure why they felt the need to change it. I am excited for multiplayer though.
Day 1 download to go with the Dooms.
Hey I might give this a try. It might be my first FPS game!😃
Yeah, this was a surprisingly good game. If what you want is more Doom, this was more Doom. It has a very Commander Keen aesthetic, so it still felt weirdly like it could have been an id game, and I remember thinking that the level design was surprisingly good.
@alexybubble That's a good point--I would like to play Pepsiman, lol. It's like the original auto-runner. I was mostly just kidding, though I don't want to see modern games overpopulated with commercialism and shameless product placement that's just a bunch of shovelware. But if people like this sort of stuff, then I'm happy for them. I'm sure there's a few diamonds in the rough, but we really don't need m&m's Beach Party to make a comeback. I think that's one we can let stay lost to time, lol.
Wow! This is just, something else.
i'm totally down
Loved this game on PC as a kid. I'll get it for Switch.
Only really interested if I can play Brutal Chex Quest.
I'm surprised the original got poor reviews. If even the Angry Video Game Nerd, who can be brutal even to good games, could praise the original in his review of it, how could it be that bad?
Still, nice to see the HD remake is coming to the Switch. I have it on PC, and have played a little, but have yet to finish it.
NO. WAY…. Oh my god this is amazing. I had both of these back in the day!!!
@CharlieGirl Chex Quest is SO NOSTALGIC for me! I would only play it on the easiest difficulty and stop playing at the last level, because I just wanted to win over and over. Now I've beaten the full trilogy (you can find it online in one download).
I love that it recreates the fun, varied pacing of DOOM without the grotesque imagery. The remake hasn't caught my eye, though, because the gameplay looks much slower.
Oh you'd best believe I will be buying this
@Captain_Toad Oh, they are Super cereal
This is awesome. I've seen the AVGN video about it. Funny he actually liked it, lol
Everything comes to Switch. Even HD remasters of free cereal box games.
YES. I played the first one at the time, as a child, and ive never stopped thinking about it. So happy for this! itll sit alongside my many doom ports on switch nicely.
if only there was some kind of... I'll call it a "folder..." to keep them in...
I played this game to absolute death back in the day and this announcement makes me unbelievably happy.
Poor critical reviews? How does a free mod of one of the greatest games of all time review poorly?
I have played both recently. I would have to say that the original beats the remake, mainly because the gameplay and physics is DOOM at its core.
Although, I heard that the HD version was originally a fan project, which is impressive with that in mind.
Both games are pretty short. They can be beaten in about 2-3 hours. I hope extra content is being planned to justify this $5 pricing.
I remember getting this out of the box and playing it a ton with my buddy in 4th grade. We thought it was the coolest!
YES YES YES. Day 1. I LOVED this game back in the day.
So I bought this because it was only $4. It's awful. They didn't use the same slick game engine as the original mod (which of course was based on Doom) but rather re-built from the ground up. And the new engine they used is sluggish and has a low framerate that defeats the purpose of what a Doom clone should be. That and the new levels feel a lot longer than the originals, and it feels too easy to run out of ammo, make it a lot harder than the original game. I'm disappointed.
I would be way more likely to get this if it included the original as well. I'm completely taken with remakes that let you swap between the original and remastered visuals. I could sit there swapping the visuals on Diablo 2 Resurrected all day long <3
