Great article, a very nice read. Now, we’ve had the ‘how to plays,’ we’ve had a history article, when’s the review coming? 😅 Of course you guys are busy, but this is a pretty huge console exclusive for Switch. Bit of a shame not to have the review out before release.
I think some of their paid dlc has been done very well. A smash bros season pass though, announced before the game has even released, at that price for five characters - that’s pretty disappointing for me.
“ We need to further enhance the content of the service... with the understanding that the time it will take to do so will be measured in years.” This is rather concerning. Perhaps we’ll get some SNES games in a few years.
@frabbit haha, yeah different strokes I guess. Am 100% with you as far as wishing people would try out all the characters - was dull playing against someone online that just used the same character over and over on the wiiu/3ds versions.
I do complain about that stuff in Mario, when post game content is locked behind acquiring a certain number of collectibles. I hate that. 😂
But total respect for your considered and well written defence of your opinion. And glad you took my comment as the joke it was intended to be 👍🏻
@frabbit good grief I hope they don’t do that. Everyone has their opinions an all, and good luck to you, friend. In my opinion, though, that is one of the worst opinions I’ve ever heard.
Why would you want content you’ve paid for locked behind a play timer? That’s absolutely insane.
If you need such a reason to come back to Mario kart and smash then perhaps those games just aren’t really your thing?
Damo has absolutely hit the nail on the head with his second to last sentence, I feel. Is a shame, but fingers crossed this kind of lacklustre online implementation will start to change.
Just checked out Alex’s online play through and It’s not great. I don’t think it’s a good look for Nintendo; their first major release after the launch of Nintendo Switch online, one that is perfect for online play with friends, features online play implemented in a terribly lacklustre way.
As many defenders of the online service like to point out when some of us complain - we knew this was coming. Well, Nintendo knew this was coming too and yet this is the first online game they’ve got after the launch?
Sounds good, really nice review. How many boards in the Mario Party mode? Apologies if I missed it. . Also ‘mpmpmpmpmom moves?’ I once had one of those words edited out of a comment here by a moderator 😂
Edit: I’ve had the same word bizarrely edited in my comment, despite the fact that it’s in the actual article.
‘Gaming has never been as good as it is today.’ I have to respectfully disagree with that. Nice piece, though. Ocarina is without a doubt my favourite Zelda game.
The article basically seems to boil down to three points: Nintendo announced this in advance, it’s cheaper than the service offered by rival platforms and it has potential, therefore it’s a very generous offering- so we should all take our medicine without complaining.
The writer of this article and others complaining about other people complaining will be grateful if enough people’s complaints lead to improvements in the service.
The original games had a grittiness that seems to have been lost, judging solely from the little I’ve seen of this new one. Perhaps nostalgia is skewing my memory of the originals. Should probably reserve judgement for now, but I’m certainly interested.
@Agramonte pretty bizarre and ethnocentric viewpoint. Admittedly this was a slow week, compared to some others in Japan, but it was a week. We usually get monthly sales for the u.s
190,000 games sold in a week isn’t exactly insignificant, and that’s just the top ten.
Edit: I believe that Japan is the second biggest console market, after the U.S. I double checked, In terms of revenue, it’s the third biggest market in the world behind China and the U.S. though that includes mobile gaming. Why on earth would you believe the second or third biggest single market was irrelevant?
@NEStalgia yeah, I do hear what you’re saying. Different strokes, I guess? I’d rather pay a little more and have access to some content I enjoy. Am in the exact same position you describe actually, almost bought mafia 3 and dead by daylight recently. Having an absolute blast with dead by daylight, that game’s hilarious.
Edit: the switch to the rental style system this gen was damn frustrating, wish people had kicked up more of a fuss about that.
@NEStalgia I have to disagree, I’m having enormous amounts of fun with this month’s psplus games, and could have said the same many times this past year. I hope Nintendo catch up some day.
I feel like Nintendo are going about this service all wrong. Had they thrown a little more money behind it, even if that meant a minor loss, they could have ensured that all the noise surrounding their new online service was positive. Beyond the price, I’ve not seen anything positive and that’s probably how it should be; what they’ve announced so far is pretty weak.
I feel like even some N64 games with online play would have been enough to change the narrative. Imagine a bit of Wave Race, F-Zero or Mario Kart 64 online.
What a mess this all was. One image that sticks in my mind Is from a video of Inafune playing what we all believed to be a very early build of the game, Inafune was praising the build while playing, saying it was great and so on. We all assumed it was a very early build - it looked so crappy - but turned out to be basically what we got. Anyone else remember the video I’m talking about? No idea where I saw it.
I thought it was a great reveal trailer, and am somewhat amused at the thought of a Smash Bros trailer triggering Anti-matter to the point where he immediately turned off the direct.
@Not_Soos I know, I know. I’m suitably ashamed, but also excited to watch. Though I felt the E3 Smash segment/breakdown of every minute detail seemed to cover almost everything. I wonder how long this one will be.
@Cobalt I don’t think it is, unfortunately. Thought it was a pretty average shooter with a Star Wars skin. It does have a damn good Star Wars skin, though.
Enjoyed this immensely when it first released, and the same with 2. I might be misremembering but I think 2 is basically superior in every way? Not sure I could play 1 again without noticing that throughout.
Would make more sense, to me, to release 1 & 2 on Switch in preparation for a glorious third instalment on Switch.
Edit: It would make even more sense, to me, if they had already announced 3 for Switch. I feel that would have generated far more excitement, but no doubt the bean-counters at Nintendo have done some sums.
I do still enjoy the odd game, it’s fun, but I feel it’s overrated. I’ve got no idea why anyone would spend money on purely superficial things like skins but to each their own. If anyone here has done i’d be very interested to know why you decided to

@Painkiller_Mike someone needs to bring back General Chaos
Re: Review: Road Redemption - A Rough But Riveting Road Rash Revival
Enjoyed the review and would be tempted to buy the game, but an inability to find anyone to play online with puts me off entirely.

@Kyranosaurus That an official statement would be hilarious? I can’t see where you wrote that.

@Kyranosaurus Can you see how some people might think that’s hilarious?

@Kyranosaurus you think Nintendo should release an official statement regarding the gender of an entirely fictional pink cartoon dinosaur?
