With all the games being released on the Nintendo Switch right now, it’s easy to forget the 3DS is still receiving new releases. One game coming to the handheld that hasn’t received as much spotlight as the likes of WarioWare Gold is the remake of the 2001 GameCube launch title, Luigi’s Mansion. Since its initial announcement, there’s been no mention about its release date, except for the fact it’s arriving at some point later this year.
Now, US retailer Best Buy has the game listed for release on 12th October. It’s hard to say how definitive this date actually is. If this release is ever going to happen, making it available prior to the holiday period would be a smart move, in order for this revived classic to receive the attention it deserves.

Earlier this year an Australian Classification Board listing revealed the title would be developed by Grezzo, the team best-known for its work on The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D and also Majora’s Mask 3D.
What do you make of this listing? Is it a Best Buy blunder, or do you expect the game to arrive around this date? Are you looking forward to replaying this now-classic game on your 3DS? Tell us below.

Eh... not on 30 October 2018 ?
It will be Match with my Birthday.
October seems like a good fit. Especially with halloween at the end of the month.
Stoking the fire here, but there appears to be a few too many reveals this morning... DLC for Shantae, Xenoblade 2, Harvest Moon.... Undertale release date and now this for Luigi's Mansion!!
Nintendo Direct real soon???
Erm first line "it’s easy to forget the 3DS is still receiving new releases", it's not really a new release, now is it?
EDIT: Yes I know it's new to the 3DS, but come on (I bet it's not even in 3D)
As long as it comes with stereoscopic 3D is a buy for me, but it's a shame I haven't had the time to play the original release on GameCube, f*cking backlog...
Not to be "that guy" but man do I want this remastered on Switch.
EDIT: phew @AlternateButtons took the hit for me lol
Would love a mansion 3.
Really enjoyed 1and 2
Enjoyed this immensely when it first released, and the same with 2. I might be misremembering but I think 2 is basically superior in every way? Not sure I could play 1 again without noticing that throughout.
Would make more sense, to me, to release 1 & 2 on Switch in preparation for a glorious third instalment on Switch.
Edit: It would make even more sense, to me, if they had already announced 3 for Switch. I feel that would have generated far more excitement, but no doubt the bean-counters at Nintendo have done some sums.
Can't believe I might still buy a 3DS game. I thought Metroid was the last one.
@Bunkerneath It's a new release on 3DS.
This could be awesome on Switch with HD rumble.
I hope that Luigi's Mansion 3 will include that at the very least, as well as integration of the oft-unused IR camera. I'm still at a loss as to how the IR camera can be integrated a typical game.
I might actually get it. I do still have it for the cube though.
All I want is 3D, yeah, that amazing 3DS feature that a lot of people enjoy even though some Switch users say that nobody does.
@Bunkerneath It's a new release (first time on 3DS) but it will be a port/remaster/remake.
I am hoping for 3D and a bit extra content, like a guests house.
@AlternateButtons Because this game runs on the same engine as Luigis Mansion 2, low cost high profit. I imagine there will be a Lugii's Mansion on the Switch in the future. But you would have to port the engine first. This game is basically to keep the 3DS owners satisfied and keep the system alive.
@luke88 Luigi's Mansion has better controls (on GameCube, at least), better resolution and probably better atmosphere and progress design than Luigi's Mansion 2. However, Lugi's Mansion 2 has more content and more variety. Next Level Games did an amazing job not only making the game but with the stereoscopic 3D and, really, it's a pleasure to play.
I wonder what price this will launch at, given that LM2 is already in the Selects price range. If it releases full price then I'll hold off, but if it comes at a decent price, like £19.99 I'll suck it up like a Poltergust 3000 on overdrive.
@AlternateButtons Yes completely agree. I said the same,as did many others,when Samus returns was announced for 3DS. They're missing a trick not putting both of these on Switch
@PlayedNSlayed
They really are missing a trick. I’d have bought this, Wario Ware and Samus Returns on Switch. Maybe Ever Oasis too. Hey ho.
I also thought dual releases, giving a discount for buying both digitally, would be a nice way of pushing the 3DS user base across to the Switch. Mind you, to Nintendo the idea of discounts is probably a reason to not do it. 😃
@Bunkerneath
It would also seem, judging from the Financial figures, most people have forgot that the 3DS is still receiving new releases. 😉
@PlayedNSlayed They could release both games as a collection for Switch like Bayonetta or Metroid Prime Trilogy.
We’re overdue for a direct. I bet we’ll get one this month to announce some games coming out between Aug and October. It’ll also have to detail the Online service and we’ll likely get the date for Luigi’s Mansion and Dark Souls
@Bunkerneath given that the original Luigi's Mansion was built in 3D for the GameCube I would guess this one should be 3D.
Still, I'll stick to my GameCube original to play this unless it comes to Switch
@carlos82 I know that GameCube was designed for 3D display, but were the final console and final games able to (unofficially)?
I wonder what other GC games could easily be ported across to 3DS. WR:blue storm perhaps. That’d be neat in 3D. Btw I still play all 3DS games with 3D up to the max. I love it and always will. What a little machine.
@beazlen1 1080ºSnowboarding/Avalanche and Wave Race 64/Blue Storm should be ported or remade. Enhanced Nintendo 64 games look perfect on 3DS as proved by Ocarina of Time, Majora's Mask and Star Fox 64. Nintendo has been missing a lot of chances there, like Super Mario 64.
@luke88 better in ALMOST every way. Maybe I’m misremembering Luigi’s Mansion on GameCube, but the thing I hated about Dark Moon was that you had to play a level 5 times before you could move on. I don’t remember the GameCube game doing this at all
@Whalehome the GameCube one was only about two to three hours long though, wasn’t it? Was an utterly brilliant few hours, granted.
I never played this on Gamecube so it's a day one purchase for me .
@1UP_MARIO yeah but 3 only on Switch! And poet 1&2 to Switch aswell in HD... Don't know why they not done it yet
October would be the best time, it makes sense.
@stuie1234 finish it. It’s magical
@NintyNate that sounds too good. Nintendo would never do it
isn't this already out for 3ds like a ways back or is this a new installment?
@derty this is the first one that came out on the GameCube in 2001. The one you’re thinking of is the sequel that was made in the 3ds.
I remember playing this at my friend's house when the GameCube first launched. I never got it for my own GameCube (something I regret even to this day) but I'll definitely be picking this up for 3DS when it releases. I hope they've added stereoscopic 3D to the game, it was perfectly used in Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon!
@derty The sequel was released for 3DS a while ago. This is a remake of the original.
Seems like it is't up on Best Buy anymore. I checked it out and the only Luigi's Mansion I'm finding is Dark Moon.
@luke88 I think you’re right, but being a kid when I played it, it definitely took me more than that to beat it. I’ve gone back to some other GameCube games (like Pikmin) as an adult to finish them because they felt so much harder as a kid.
Why not re-release Super Mario Sunshine and Metroid Prime 1 and 2 as well for the 3DS?
@BlueOcean the final games weren't able to but Nintendo did have a working 3D version of Luigi's Mansion
@carlos82 Interesting. I hope that Luigi's Mansion on 3DS has stereoscopic 3D.
@Moroboshi876
That’s a very long backlog 😂
It is awesome btw, I envy you for getting to experience it for the first time.
That's roughly around the time I was expecting (if true). This game will be perfect around Halloween.
This also hammers home that we're due for a Nintendo Direct soon.
Seems like a good time for it to come out. It's a shame that I don't play my 3ds now... The Switch is so much more appealing, there's no way a previously 1 screen console game couldn't have been better on the Switch which also has 1 screen. I really doubt the 3ds version makes substantial enough use of the 2 screens to justify the port to the lesser system...
sigh
unfortunately I have forgotten the source but I did hear that it will be in 3D, which kind of surprise me, considering how many games are giving up on it at this point
@Turrican280 I have to say I was out of gaming world between 2000 and 2006, but Luigi's Mansion is a game I finally purchased a few years ago. My backlog is big, but not that big. Lol
@Moroboshi876
Haha, you will definitely enjoy it. Amazing atmosphere.
My backlog is pretty big now. Growing up and working sucks 🤣
@Bunkerneath 3D was already confirmed. It makes sense they'd try and put it in because the game was originally supposed to be in 3D.
@AlternateButtons Well to be fair, because it's not really new. I am betting this is, basically a rom-hack recreation using the Dark Moon game engine. It's probably being done by a junior team at the studio for training purposes that they can still make some money off of. Like Pokemon USUM. A way to give new people experience without having to risk them developing some flop of a game that wont sell.
But if it were releasing on Switch, I'd buy it in a heart beat. Passing on 3DS however.
@sandman89 Same have it on GameCube but would like to get and play it in 3D as Nintendo had once hoped to release it. It would be a timely release around Halloween, I'm in.
@Heavyarms55 This article links to another article that mentions Grezzo is developing this port. They are the ones who did a great job on the two Zelda 64 ports to the 3DS as well as their original game Ever Oasis, so this should be a quality port. I do plan to grab it on 3DS, but I agree a HD Switch re-release would be amazing.
@Nico07 Right but Grezzo likely has more than one team of workers. Which they are training by having them do this port of an existing game with a game engine that has already been made. Their workers get experience on an "easy" job - and they still get some profits for their time and effort.
@Heavyarms55 While possible, I think you are underestimating the work they do and the effort that is involved.
Well i'll be playing this game when it releases and since I never had a gamecube as a kid I might just play this.
To everyone wondering whether this game will have 3D Support, yes it will- Amiibo support is happening as well. Amazon revealed the final boxart image like a month ago, but Nintendo Life never bothered doing an article of that because as of the last year or so, the 3DS has gained a negative stigma here not much different from the one PS Vita has over at Push Square
