As we reach the end of the first month of the year, Nintendo has released a new system update for the Switch. Version 7.0.0 is a little bit more exciting than you might think.
In this firmware update, Nintendo has added six New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe icons for your user. Additional language support has been added, and of course, it wouldn't be an update without stability improvements. Take a look at the changelog below:
- Select from six new New Super Mario Bros.™ U Deluxe icons for your user
- To edit your user icon, head to your My Page > Profile on the top left of the HOME menu
- Added additional language support to the HOME Menu for Chinese, Korean, and Taiwanese
- To change the language, head to the System Settings > System > Language
- General system stability improvements to enhance the user's experience
To perform this update manually, open system settings and begin the download. Otherwise, your Switch will automatically download the update when it's online.
Note: The Joy-Con has also received an update. To perform this update, click on the controllers and sensors tab in the system settings. There's no information about what exactly it does.
Have you updated to version 7.0.0? Have you noticed anything else about this update that is not mentioned in the patch notes? Tell us below.

...sighs
Remember when updates were exciting?
already changed my icon to Peachette.
patiently awaiting a Bowsette icon.
Came here for stability jokes......I'll wait.
I need more stability in my life
Thanks for the icons... But I could go for some folders instead of the current disorganized mess.
oh god... it's sad that the mention of a new Switch firmware instantly fills me with sarcasm 🙄
ffs, Nintendo.
@Joeynator3000 I fondly remember those days.
They jumped all the way from v6.2.0 to v7.0 to add six new icons???
@Aslanmagic c'mon you can do better than that! 😉
@Joeynator3000 remember when we didn't even get updates and games were complete on day release? Ahhh those was the days lol
I kind of predicted it be another 5.0 update. More focused on an overhaul of security rather than interface.
Is it just me or these significant leaps in 'version' numbers don't really justify a full system update. I feel Ike by Version 7 we should have more features. This just feels like Switch OS '1.7'
This firmware update is clearly mostly for Asia. The addition of that language support is pretty huge considering the Switch launched with NONE of them in those regions for more than a year now.
@Joeynator3000 People have been asking for more icons for a while now, for some reason.
@Seacor said "They jumped all the way from v6.2 to v7.0 for six new icons???"
Tell me about it, what a friggin' joke 😠😠
Actually the new language support is good for those in other regions, but really, after two years they can't update the damn GUI a little bit??
@ReaderRagfihs Ugh...why icons?! We need themes! The main menu is just....SOOOO FREAKIN' BORING! lol
@Joeynator3000 I remember those days, fun times when also maintenance meant a Nintendo Direct was incoming.
Don’t know why everyone is complaining. They fixed my one major complaint: my console wasn’t stable enough!
At first, I could balance it on a tightrope.
Now, with the update, I can balance it on a tightrope above the Grand Canyon while both a hurricane and and an earthquake are raging, in addition to seven pounds of lard being tied with (slightly used) dental floss to each Joy-Con.
Thanks Nintendo!
Folders you diabolical madmen, give me folders!!
System 1.7, that is more like it. I really, really miss the way I could connect with other gamers on the Wii, Wii U, and 3DS. Come on Nintendo, get with it. I have friends that own a Switch, and their main issue is that they can't message me when I'm online (within the Switch OS). And using a Smartphone App is not the solution. So dumb Nintendo....
"I expect nothing and I'm still let down."
Just add Smash icons and take a break with them, I think we have quite enough Mario icons
Nothing crazy but at least I can finally have Toadette as my avatar without the Treasure Tracker hat. Nice little surprise!
To be fair, when versioning, an increase to the first number doesn't mean features are being added. When you increase the first number it means that you have changed enough so that your new system is not backwards compatible with anything from your previous one, meaning there was something done in the background that makes the leap from 6.2.0 to 7.0.0 significant in those terms.
However, we are already at version 7 and we still haven't had any major changes to the UI at all, whats with the obsession of just adding icons, those are just images you are dropping. At least give us themes, we've had black and white for almost two years now.
I am feeling more stable already.
No real upgrade without stability !!!
@JamesJose7 to keep it low-mem just add some more colors.
@Lumine did you steal my avatar?
@premko1 That is probably one of the biggest reasons they are not adding much. The current UI is incredibly snappy and responsive, there's gotta be ways around it though, only the future will tell.
@TheAwesomeBowser Um, just a friendly tip, don't post many pictures and gifs on this site. A certain someone was warned not to post many pics and gifs because a moderator said something I forgot. I dunno, but please ease off on the pictures and gifs
New update for the joycons included, too. Doesn't seem to be an update for the Pro Controller.
Themes could possible make the UI slower, but I wouldn't mind some more colors.
And only 6 icons? Why not add the character roster from smash? That would at least warrant a higher number firmware.
Hope it fixes problems on the joy cons, and better the p2p connection happening on games
Also, why are people getting upset about stability and profile icons with this update? I find it silly that they want this recent update to have things they want on the Switch. They will come eventually, so please calm the heck down and don't get your feathers in a twister over things like stablity and profile icons. Although the stablity jokes are quite funny.
Useless update zzzzzzz.......
Implementing folders is hard apparently
Smash icons would have been nice. I'd like to sport an icon of my boy Ike.
my god are they EVER gonna release Brazilian Portuguese? Nintendo is so weird with Brazil, the 3DS, the WiiU and Wii all had Brazilian Portuguese, we're stuck with Portugal's completely different words (anything invented post-Independence like videogames we've developed different terminology)
~to the tune of https://youtu.be/HBu9LZa8Yrk~
STABILITY-YYYY, STABILITY
@TheAwesomeBowser Grandma?
@NintyNate Yup, and you were happy to have bugs in your game. OoT 1.0, OoT 1.1, OoT 1.2.
This is also another far reaching anti-hack update. The backend landscape and keys are completely changed again
Here's hoping v7 has a hidden emulator support for snes games they are waiting to announce.. In the meantime I'm also hoping for rocket shoes, a baby dinosaur clone and for Jennifer Lawrence to fall in love with me at first sight
@SCAssassin at least for China it's just a nice bonus, considering that the system is not officially sold in mainland China (in HK it is, though)... But maybe it's a sign that they consider going into that market. It's a huge one!
I like Nintendo and all, but man... they are so frustratingly slow when it comes to implementing new features...
Oh well, i’ve been patient for this long...
What's wrong with a 6.5? Then again, everyone abuses what "full upgrade" used to mean years ago. Apple used to be great at this practice until they started giving away macOS updates. It's a shame, but more stability is always welcomed!
I did it, need more stability in my life too!
@Joeynator3000 On Nintendo systems? No.
What do England players say when their captain updates his Switch?
It's Kane and Stable.
It's so stable I'm gonna put my horse in it.
Only 6 new icons? ONLY 6?! How many major new games have we gotten since the last update??? Xenoblade, Super Smash Brothers, Tales of Vesperia, Dark Souls, Doom, Disgaea, The World Ends with You, Octopath Traveller, and on and on! Where are the icons for those titles?!
How hard is it to load static images for this purpose?! After all this time, that's all the added in terms of "features"?
And how are there still no FOLDERS?! Why can't we customize the home menu at all? Why can't I sort games by title, or purchase date, or however I want?! That kind of functionality was an option in WINDOWS 95 Even early computer system interfaces let you organize your user interface!
The language options are nice for people in those regions. I fully agree with these additions.
I am sorry, this is not worthy of being a numbered update. This should have just been another version of 6.whatever.
Unless those stability updates block out the hacking that has been plaguing Splatoon 2. Which I doubt.
Maybe this is to prepare the Switch for a big move into China. If so the update might have been to enable the Switch security to be compliant with Chinese security standards. If that's the case I'm cool with it. A hundred million Chinese owning Switches is a small price to pay for an update and it could enable amazing games to be funded.
I'm hoping the Joy-con update leads to improved motion control detection via improved algorithms.
Giving this version a full version number bump is bizarre. Even the under-the-hood security changes are pretty minor.
Good to see that the Switch is more stable than the US economy
@SCAssassin The new sercurity changes have already been bypassed, took about a half hour. There's really nothing more N can do to secure hackable switches, about all they can do is randomly rearrange elements of the boot process like they did here.
There's no point at all in N trying to fix the unfixable, they should focus on feature updates that will at least make some people happy.
Folders and themes would be nice, but Im not that fussed about those features like most folks here.
According to the official News by Amelia N that appears in the News section on the Switch itself, the update comprises, "bits and bobs".
Well, that clears it up.
On the top of my head I’m guessing that they have more icons from Wii U games than Switch ones.
Well, the switch is far more stable than the Australian prime ministership!
Still no menu themes.
Still no folders.
Still no way to arrange the game icons.
Sigh....
No folders or anything that people actually wanted huh? Just some lame icons that I will never use?
Patience people. Yesterday I just saw a thread saying they want new icons and he got his wish. Now we wait for ours. I have no doubt that themes and folders will come to Switch, just not when.
@Seacor and 3 new languages Even if that doesn't seem significant, it IS.
Also major updates block downgrading to older versions.
Apparently it has been hacked already. It took all of 4 hours to bypass the new security that came with this update.
@JackEatsSparrows I didn't come across as many as games now lol
@JamesJose7 not necessarily true.
There aren’t any fixed rules for version management, while there are plenty of guidelines it’s up each own to decide how to manage versions.
Facebook as an example gives every release a new version meaning they are on version 205 for iOS.
What’s difficult to understand as an outsider is Nintendo’s reasoning behind their numbering. For while I said there’s no universal rules, each development company usually have a policy on this.
I’d say it’s the language support that means this is getting a major release numbering. It’s a quite significant update even if it’s not very relevant for us in the west.
Why is everyone crying about themes? I just don't get it. Folders, I am not dying for but at least I get it. When I put a theme in my 3DS IT LOADED MORE SLOWLY!
Love the icons!
People excited for icons? Really? No wonder Nintendo think they can put out anything, other than what people really want, and still be praised for putting in minimal effort. How about getting people excited for GAMES,and i don't mean more lacklustre ports. So far this year i can't see where I'm going to be spending my money on anything for the Switch. The ps4 on the other hand? Give me a reason to give you money Nintendo, i dare you
Anything that addresses the Splatoon 2 hacking scene?
Another day, another
https://imgtc.com/i/5ADT7ty.gif
@NintyNate games often also had an hour or two worth of content padded by a harsh difficulty level.
Also bugs and frame rate drops were common place, we used to call it slow down but you had to just crack on because no updates were available.
If a game was unbalanced, unfinished mess it still got released, it just stayed that way.
@PlayedNSlayed that's a bizarre statement. We know of a tonne of exclusives coming to Switch this year none of which are ports and yet I can only think of dreams and days gone confirmed to be coming to PS4
Best update since months!!
This is great. Stuff of magic
I wish Nintendo and developers for Nintendo systems would support Polish language already. The eShop has Polish currency after all.
Folders, themes... where art thou. We all love ya, Ninty... but you can stick your icons... somewhere.
Seriously the biggest joke is that they are calling this a 7.0! It's barely different (to Joe Public) from the very first version of the Switch OS.
The only icon I ever needed was the Yoshi Egg. The rest are for lesser beings.
Folders. Seriously. This thing needs folders.
I guess we have to wait till close to the end of the Switch's console life, before we get anything exciting like Themes and folders in the UI. /shrug
Nintendo just never learns....
@Alantor28 Okey doke. I'll keep that in mind.
@dux I heard Nintendo stopped officially supporting Brazil so that should be the reason they don't have it. However I understand your point as even I never change the language from English I don't like when only Brazilian Portuguese is supported on a game
For all we know, these updates might be packed with easter eggs and thousands of exciting hidden feature... or maybe not.
@Seacor 6.2 to 7.0... We deserved at least 8 new icons!
Where's the browser?
@Figeluren Hidden.
The Switch has a web browser, just not directly accessible for some reason. Games can access it, like Warframe for example.
@Jeronan I am aware. Let me clarify my wish. Give us users access to the browser with a usable GUI.
Why are they numbering these like big updates? Surely this should be 1.7 or something?
Guaranteed that there's something they're waiting to announce in the next Direct.
SNES support I'll bet!
And yet no Xenoblade icons?
@Balta666 yeah, I heard that a lot of Portuguese play Pokémon Go in English because of that. Nintendo did stop having official representation a while ago (2015 I think), but the 3DS eShop never stopped working here with local currency, and now there's an official Switch eShop too (it's a little weird though, you have to buy on the website), so they "stopped", but they haven't. They were here promoting Smash and Let's Go in the latest Brazil Game Show for instance.
I really don't get why it's a major revision to 7.0 for a "we added a few icons and some langauge packs" update. I expected 7.0 would have something major either in terms of features, or peripheral support, or services, or something.....
No folders. FML.
@Joeynator3000 Peperidge Farm remembers....
We need, themes, SNES, folders, and more stability. Come on Nintendo.
@Medic_alert haha I know I've played many throughout my life, I am 32 so I've played these old games, still prefer them coz games now have more bugs after they been fixed it seems
We need more dlc tracks for Mario kart 8 deluxe pls Mr Nintendo.
@Figeluren I saw him in Mario kart 8 and odyssey, think he's in smash too
@ClampedDownHard @OorWullie It took about 12 hours, but that's besides the point. The backend asn't just about further improving some of the anti-hacks (the bypass was preexisting because of Nvidia flaws not already covered and another point is all they did was find the keys, the average user can't actually hack anything with what they found and you still need tools), it's an entire restructure for the backend to support further features and OS updates, as well as to prepare the OS for eventual revisions, hopefully on Nvidia tech that isn't riddled with holes.
@GrailUK Anti-cheat was enabled months ago and most of the original hackers were banned already.
@Seacor unless something new shows up soon, that is probably the most worrisome part.
Since this Joy-Con update reaction in Fitness Boxing is much better. Especially my right neon-red Joy-Con had big problems (losing connection while standing 1 Meter in front of the Switch, strange long vibrations, not reacting...)
Now all is running fine.
I’m just trying to figure out how they’re on version 7 and there’s no option to view an alphabetical alpha-numeric list of software.
60 something titles on my end, and finding one out of a gobbledygook of unorganized images is no fun.
When bought Switch day 1, it was very stable and has been since then. Online still isn't stable.
Has anyone heard of MicroSD cards being wiped/unrecognised after this update? I just updated my Switch and immediately afterwards, my microSD card is no longer recognised. Anyone else?
