Super Smash Bros. Ultimate isn't the only game which has a vocal minority of fans who like to make questionable fighter requests. If you've been keeping tabs on Mortal Kombat 11, you may or may not have heard about a fan petition asking NetherRealm Studios to add Shaggy from the Scooby-Doo animation to the game. The Mortal Kombat series' co-creator Ed Boon even played along for a while, acknowledging Shaggy supporters on his Twitter account.
For anyone who thought there might be a chance of the cartoon character coming to the eleventh entry in the violent and bloody fighting series, think again. During the delayed Kombat Kast, the game's community manager completely shut down the possibility of this cartoon character - or the rest of the gang - making an appearance in the upcoming release, with this brutal reply:
“Shaggy will not be in the game. At all. Ever. Sorry, dead meme.”
Later on, the official Mortal Kombat 11 Twitter account paid its respects to Shaggy with the following hashtag:
We can't help but be impressed by the team's approach to these sorts of requests. They have a laugh and then move on.
Despite Shaggy not making the cut, there are plenty of other fighters to look forward to playing as in MK11. During the same stream, Kabal was officially revealed, after a brief teaser of the character at the big gameplay reveal last month. Take a look at this fighter in action below:
NetherRealm also teased the insectoid fighter D'Vorah would be returning. No information about this character has been shared yet, but you can at least see what she looks like in the latest outing, in the image below:
Are you looking forward to MK11? Are you disappointed Shaggy won't be added to the game? Tell us below.

Shaggy can use 1.7% of his brain power to kill everyone..... Why would you want an OP character? Let the games begin fair guys
Meme culture is just the worst.
Second-worst Scooby Doo character next to Scrappy. I miss when memes were something only a handful of nerds on the internet knew of, before companies started marketing campaigns centered around iconic copy like "#SorryNotSorry".
If only Sakurai would say the same thing for so many characters...
It was obvious that he will never be in a game. After all, he is a character from an animated series.
Shaggy was obviously only using 5% of his power guys, he’ll be back for round two soon enough.
Can't wait for this game, it's been a long time since I played MK!
That's it, preorder cancelled!
(No, I hadn't had it preordered to begin with, but that's besides the point.)
What sort of numbers of fans are we talking? ...Perhaps 8 twitter accounts with 2-3 followers each? - I feel for the developers when they have to deal with blah noise like this.
Press F to pay respects
Shaggy's not an option, gotcha. How about Johnny Quest, then?
To be fair, he was technically possible as a character, since both the Shaggy IP, and the Mortal Kombat IP, are both owned by Warner (Warner Bros.)/Time Warner, which is now owned by AT&T. It’s not like it was completely out of the realm of possibility, even if it didn’t make sense to most. So...
No Shaggy No Buy
I’m guessing Shaggy was powerful that Boon just fainted in his presence. He wasn’t even at 1%.
So if we can’t have Shaggy, we must obtain the true destroyer of galaxies: Fred Figglehorn.
Also, Shaggy isn’t a dead meme. It’s like saying Big Chungus is funny and well developed.
By the time the game comes out, the shaggy meme would have died because of normies.
This is the stupidest news I’ve heard, ever. I hate Scooby-Doo. Why.?! Irony? Thank u for denying this, Mortal Kombat. Let us move forward. Cheeses Crust.
I read the title as "Netherlands Brutal Response to..."
Somehow that would be even funnier.
To all the people saying this is stupid. Remember Injustice 2? That game had gosh diddly dang Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles as DLC.
@Heavyarms55 Yeah that’s definitely a lot better. Especially coming from a Brit site.
...But what about Shrek?
@GyroZeppeli
That's the only reason I bought the game plus dlc when it was on sale on psn
Sweet, glad D’Vorah is back. One of the better new characters in the last game.
That Kabal footage is totally fake:

If you're going to comment on fan culture memes, then be funny about it.
"It ain't happening" is not funny. In their defense, there is NOTHING funny about totally brutal fights to the death!
Lets be honest here, memes are pretty much stupid to begin with. The majority of them aren't funny, disturbingly at least half of them seem like they're made up by adults with child like thinking.
Can't wait to use Kabal!
Now when Mortal Kombat 11 gets released, the nerd race is on to see who can mod Shaggy in the game on PC the fastest . The winner gets bragging rights and a viral YouTube video., Woot-Woot..
@shoeses
I totally agree, waluigi has got out of control, he's a sub mediocre character who will be similar to Luigi and mario, piranha plant is something different yet there's such a call for waluigi. whatever is announced, there'll be little appreciation unless it's boring old him!
I can't believe people called it insulting he was a trophy, not oh good work on an amazing game all, wow! king k rool and Ridley, wow
Now that it's confirmed that he won't be in it. off to the next better choice of a guest character. (and no not scooby.)

@AlternateButtons you weren’t going to buy it in the first place.
although I'm no fan of MK, I would like to say that all of you guys are being childish and complaining about a character which isn't supposed to be part of the game and it doesn't make sense to put a character from a cartoon tv show in this type of game. besides it's the developer's decision if he wants to add a certain character to the game or not.
The list of stuff I’m boycotting grows.
#justiceforshaggy
#freewaluigi
They can take our freedom but they can’t take our purple chairs.
I’ll let me wallet do the talking...
When I read the title I thought of Shaggy the rapper (Oh Carolina, I wasn't me etc), why would he be in it?
And then read that it was Shaggy from Scooby Doo, and thought exactly the same.
@WaveBoy RE2 is a thing of beauty. Loving it. It’s amazing. Officially I’m boycotting it because Bart Simpson isn’t in it... obviously... but it really is great. I’m coming To the end of Leon’s bit so not even half way through and it’s been awesome. More games like this please.
@Bunkerneath it wasn’t him.
@GyroZeppeli Ninja Turtles have crossed over with Batman in the comics though, and from the few issues I read they seem to fit in. Turtles in a serious fighting game work a lot better than... Shaggy. Lol
@GyroZeppeli But at least TMNT are fighters and fit a dark game like this going by their original comics, and have already crossed over with other dark/mature series like MK
what the heck is Shaggy going to do? he can't fight or stand up to anything that looks remotely scary and his series is too kid friendly
Next thing you know they be asking for Fred Flintstone or "Grand dad" as they stupidly call him
How did people even start wanting Shaggy to be in Mortal Kombat? Like, what's he got to do with the MK universe? At least Waluigi, et al make sense in Smash Bros.
@AlternateButtons
Dude, that's being rude as well. Assuming that their success would ever depend on your personal patronage.
@AlternateButtons I think you're woefully overestimating the size of the "Shaggy or no buy!"-crowd, it was a silly suggestion based on what are basically re-skinned "Chuck Norris"-jokes, nobody was really expecting it to happen, but it's fun to joke about.
@Majora101 You preferred Fred Jones to Shaggy? Surely not
I'm not sure the kid in me could have handled seeing Shaggy's intestines being ripped out in a fatality. That would just be totally wrong.
If I could choose 2 guest cartoon characters for Mortal Kombat, Skeletor and Mumm-ra would be great to play as and wouldn't look out of place.
Just a tweet?
I was hoping for a Shaggy fatality. Where are them MK10 modders at?
@tourjeff Play Mortal Kombat X (XL) while you’re waiting - it’s incredible.
@FTL I've seen this game for PS4, might have a got if a find a cheap one on eBay
Dang, oh well. The meme was funny while it lasted.
...I wasn’t gonna buy this game anyways, so why do I care? 😂
@ROBLOGNICK Think because the Turles were in Injustice 2, people got their hopes up for somebody more obscure.
Welp. Looks like I'm not buying the game. Looks like they don't want my cash.
I love Shaggy Rogers in Scooby-Doo but to be honest he does NOT fit in Mortal Kombat to begin with.
I forgot about the whole Shaggy from Scooby-Doo thing and for whatever reason, thought from the heads line we were talking about Shaggy the R&B/Reggae singer. I was ready to have some choice words, lol
Seriously, where did the Shaggy memes even come from?
@Majora101 Scooby-Dum and Yabba-Doo say Hi!
@Audiobrainiac Disliking Scooby Doo is one of those times where an opinion can, in fact, be wrong.
@Indielink I was just being dramatic. It sucks for those wanted him in there I guess.
Lol what's up with the Hanna-Barbara character requests for a MK game? Grape Ape would be a better choice anyway..
@jtmnm #firstworldproblems
This is what kinda bugs me about how memes get so easily out of hand.
What starts out as a dumb, occasionally funny joke turns into weird expectations where people actually hope (if not demand) that creative professionals attempt to appease the most inside of inside jokes so these meme lords can go, "We did it, Reddit!" and get their kicks for 5 minutes.
That road almost always leads to wasted time, hurt PR, and disappointed fans...
@SamusLv7 Which Batman also appeared. C'mon if Scorpion and Batman could exist together and Shaggy and Batman could exist together so can Shaggy and Scorpion.
@SilverEdge92 While Shaggy was a meme subject prior, this current trend really exploded fresh off the hype surrounding the reveal of Goku's latest form in Dragon Ball Super; Ultra Instinct (Basically, a state of having flawless, split-second, Reaction skills). That is when Meme versions of Ultra Instinct began making their rounds online.
And from there, the meme of Shaggy's "True Power" kicked off.
Shaggy, the new Shrek of crossover games.
@AlternateButtons
You have of course a right to be offended, they're being blunt without softening the blow with any dash of humor. Stale meme or not, commenting on it officially means they acknowledge it, and then they need to be in on the joke, or they will just be insulting the intelligence of their fans, by assuming that they're 100% serious about the whole thing.
It's a perfect "say something nice or keep your mouth shut" situation.
However, implying that you should speak on behalf of all fans (or at least a sufficient amount to render the game unprofitable) when you say that this tweet bums you out so hard that you go from wanting to buy the game to NOT wanting to buy it?
That is kind of rude.
You lump hundreds of thousands of players, if not millions, in with yourself, on being highly offended by a few sentences about the inclusion of a 60s cartoon character in the sequel for a campy 90s fighting game series.
None of it is terribly important, and it shouldn't ruin your day, or make you speak ill of anyone.
I wasn't planning to get it, but that response makes me want to get the game. I support no nonsense responses like this instead of beating around the bush with ramble like "nothing to announce at this time" or "no plans". Just put it to rest and keep it moving.
@ClassSonicSatAm @VR32X ‘Twas a joke. Does anyone actually use the word gosh diddly dang if they are being serious? Also, since this failed, the next plausible solution for memesters is to beg for Bigweld from Robots.
I’ll have to agree with @AlternateButtons, the devs’ reaction to this was very rude for what was just a joke. It obviously wasn’t going to happen, but they could have played along. That’s why everyone loves the Sonic Twitter, they are not afraid to play along with fan jokes.
@90sRetroGaming that was the whole point of the joke
Good thing. Now MK players feel like how I felt when people wanted to seriously add Goku on SSB. God I hate meme culture so much.
Also, LOL at the "no Shaggy, no buy" crowd. Seriously, screw them. If you're going to buy the game out of that novelty, don't even bother. You are not buying this game for what its worth and you are seriously only doing it because of a meme. Get out.
Anyone who gets offended to the point of not buying a game because a dead meme gets called such probably doesn’t have a sufficient sense of humour to be engaging with memes in the first place.
I mean, I won’t be buying the game because I’m a delicate flower and can’t watch 10 seconds of gameplay footage without feeling nauseous. Yet somehow, despite my feeble constitution, I can deal with the news that a stupid character has been bluntly refused without throwing a fit about it.
Maybe I’ve got some stomach after all.
So Shaggy is their Waluigi? lol
@ROBLOGNICK Shaggy is a popular Meme used to say that he's only used X% power., and then he ultimate;y destroys his enemy in one attack. There are even videos were he uses Ultra Instinct!
@GyroZeppeli Sonic Twitter is fun!
They always respond to mention if the Orca we'll be a playable character in Team Sonic Racing LOL!!!
People who constantly use a meme until they run it into the ground are the internet equivalent of that guy in the breakroom that you don't really know, but you have this one mostly inconsequential laugh together.
Then every time you see him he uses this new inside joke as your only connection, desperate to connect in some way, until the point that when you see him you just walk the other way and cringe when he starts the joke.
Thank God. I can't believe they even had to address this idiotic, unfunny, unwitty, uncreative "meme".
First the Super Bowl halftime show, now this... when will the disappointment end!?
@Quincy There were tons of people asking for Shaggy to be in the game rather than just a few small accounts like you think there was. There were over 350,000+ signatures on change.org A link to a news article that talks about this is https://www.svg.com/144540/petition-to-add-shaggy-to-mortal-kombat-11-surpasses-300k-signatures/
@DK-Fan You are a dissapointment
@link422007 What is wrong with meme culture?
Zoinks!
And because NL won't let me post just that...Jinkies!
@itsyaboiiiii
How about running a joke into the ground turning it into unrecognisable powder that meme pages snort like coccaine?
I remember people voting in a music awards show when rickroll was a thing. It was so stupid to vote Never gonna Give You Up by Rick Astley even after 2 decades since its debut. People were actually sincere in their choice there. It's fine online but doing it IRL is cringe as all hell.
Look at what meme culture brought on to mainstream media: dangerous, stupid challenges, unfunny image macros from edgelord levels to religious or political subliminal messaging that piss people off, forced memes like minions or whatever the heck it is something now. Memes have always been like fireworks, it's short, quick, a spectacle, and quickly fizzles out as it came. Yet there are people who. Keep. Digging. A. Dead. And. Burried. Meme.
That ok meme? People actually, sincerely believe that it was a white supremacy hand sign when it was a plant from 4chan to make juvenile and gullible memers believe and spread it online to the point people want to ban it.
Meme culture brought out the worst in people. Satire was blurred with reality.
@itsyaboiiiii

@mrjelly Not trying to mock you, but...
Geno has gotten out of control; He's a sub mediocre character who will be similar to Mario and Luigi. Piranha Plant and Joker are something different, yet there's such a call for Geno. Whatever is announced, there'll be little appreciation unless it's boring old Geno!
I can't believe people called it "insulting" he was a Spirit, not "Great work on an amazing game, Nintendo!".
