Masahiro Sakurai - the creator of the Super Smash Bros. series - isn’t only idolised by fans of his games, there are also people within the video game industry who consider him to be a living legend. One of these individuals is Sonic Team composer Tomoya Ohtani, who provided some remixed tunes for Sakurai's latest release on Nintendo Switch.
At a recent event organised by Sakurai exclusively for the composers who worked on Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Ohtani asked the director to sign his own copy of the game. As can be seen above, Sakurai added Kirby to the front cover.
Below is a message thanking everyone for attending the event as well as some photos of the gathering:
“Today there was a gathering of all Super Smash Bros. Ultimate composers. The percentage of composers and people who attended were amazing. Thank you everyone!”
Have you ever had a video game or system signed by a famous developer? What did you think of the selection of music in the latest Super Smash Bros. game? Tell us below.

Absolutely deserved it. The composers work so hard to make so many great tunes! It is truly something amazing.
I look forward to buying the 25-disc OST box set.
But in all seriousness, I just want the Hitori Omou remix on CD (namely, the 3DS/Wii U remix; I really, really didn't like the Ultimate remix).
Reminds me of when I got my Gold Mario signed by Charles Martinet...
This was most likely a big moment for him! Congrats!
Edit: For clarification, that big scribble on the front of the picture is me editing the photo to remove my name. Charles wrote my name on it, calling me “Number One!” He’s such a swell guy ☺️
Simply being in the same room with Mr. Sakurai would be an incredible honor, so I don't even know how I'd react to getting him to sign my copy of Smash. Mr. Sakurai's games defined my childhood and they continue to do so to this day!
@MH4 He went a bit haywire with the marker-pen on the front!
@Maxz That’s just me covering my name 😂
Poor Sakurai looks skinny as a rail. Reminds me of how Iwata looked after his surgery. I hope he's eating well.
Apologies if this is dark, I'm just mildly concerned for his well-being. No occupation is worth such bodily strain, no matter how skilled in your field you are. And Sakurai is certainly skilled.
There is a single remixed Sonic track in all of Smash, hell even the victory music after 10 years is still ripped straight from a game rather than being made for Smash like everything else.
@Not_Soos : Sakurai looks pretty healthy though (all things considered!). He's probably just naturally thin. Iwata-san on the other hand had looked very frail towards the end, but he kept a brave face until the very end.
@Silly_G Well, I do hope that's the case. It's no question Sakurai works himself to the bone (no pun intended), and he even unsarcastically made a comment about how others were concerned when he lost I think around 14 pounds working on Ultimate because he was so devoted to the project. He essentially said he didn't think he was malnourished, and he thought it was a healthy weight. I dunno, I just found the whole thing a little odd. If he's skipping meals all the time to get extra work dome, that can't be good. You're right though, Sakurai has always looked tremendously young in the face, so maybe that's indicative of good health. Here's to hoping this man outlives us all, so we're never without his great games!
A game we got Yoko Shimomura and Jun Senoue to compose music for. Quite the achievement, honestly!
What do I think of the selection of music in Smash Ultimate?
I think I would kill for that collection of music in higher quality on CD so I can put it on my computer and phone!
@MH4 Why did you write your name on it?
@Lionyone No, Charles wrote my name on it.
He wrote “Super [My Name]! Number One!” on the side, “Woo hoo!” on the top, and on the bottom it’s signed from Mario & Charles.
It was one of the most special moments of my entire life.
@MH4 Bro, that's the coolest thing ever! I'm so jealous!
@Reigestugatensho If you ever get the chance to meet him, I’d definitely go for it! 😃 He happened to be at a ComicCon in my state, so I jumped at the opportunity! I went in, met Mr. Martinet, and left. 😂 I’m incredibly thankful I was able to.
Quick warning though, be prepared to pay an arm and a leg to meet him. Getting him to sign Gold Mario and take pictures with me and my family cost a good bit. Worth every cent for the incredible memory, though!
Nice guy Sakurai, but please, don't let him direct another Smash Bros.
@MH4 Incredible experience! Thanks for sharing your story!
@Dpullam 😊
Here’s another funny part to the story:
So you must know, I can do a pretty swell Mario/Luigi/Wario/Waluigi voice, if I do say so myself.
As I was leaving, Charles said as Mario, “Thank you so much for playing my game!”
On instinct, I said in Luigi's voice: “Oho, thank you so much for making your games!”
And ever since I’ve laughed about it because it was really awkward doing a Luigi impression to Luigi’s actual VA. 🤣
@MH4 Haha. That is an awesome ending to that story. You are very lucky indeed!
@MH4 Wow! In moments like that we see gaming is about much more than just making money. That's one very dear amiibo you'll never sell if you can help it!
@MH4 Nice! Will do!
