The upcoming Switch version of Dragon Quest XI - Dragon Quest XI: Echoes Of An Elusive Age S, to give it its full title - will contain scenarios which weren't present in the PS4 and PC versions, Square Enix has confirmed.
The news comes from a livestream hosted by the developer today, in which a small tease of gameplay footage was shared, giving us another quick look at the game running on Switch. No additional details have been shared surrounding exactly what these scenarios may contain, but it's a nice little bit of news to hear nonetheless.
The footage we just mentioned has been captured in this YouTube video below; rather than focusing almost exclusively on dramatic cutscenes like the official trailer, these clips show more of the dialogue-heavy scenes (even if it is all still in Japanese). Feel free to check it out below.
Elsewhere in the stream, more members of the Japanese voice cast were revealed:
- Protagonist (voiced by Mitsuki Saiga)
- King Carnelian (voiced by Sugou Takayuki)
- Hendrik (voiced by Rikiya Koyama)
- Jasper (voiced by Takahiro Sakurai)
- Amber (voiced by Mami Koyama)
- Chalky (voiced by Kenichi Ogata)
- Prince Faris (voiced by Nobunaga Shimazaki)
- Kainui (voiced by Yuichi Nakamura)
- Michelle (voiced by Ai Kayano)
- Atsuko (voiced by Emiri Katou)
- Atsuo (voiced by Emiri Katou)
- Miko (voiced by Toa Yukinari)
- Queen Frysabel (voiced by Yui Horie)
- Krystalinda (voiced by Miyuki Sawashiro)
Adding to those we already knew:
- Erik (voiced by Kouki Uchiyama)
- Veronica (voiced by Maaya Uchida)
- Serena (voiced by Sora Amamiya)
- Sylvando (voiced by Masaya Onosaka)
- Rab (voiced by Mugihito)
- Jade (voiced by Ami Koshimizu)
- Gemma (voiced by Ayako Kawasumi)
- Vince (voiced by Tomokazu Sugita)
- Mia (voiced by Inori Minase)
Dragon Quest XI: Echoes Of An Elusive Age S launches this year in Japan; we still haven't had any news of a western release just yet. We'll leave you with a full recap of the livestream should you want to give it a watch.
Are you looking forward to this one? Do you hope it will get a full western release somewhere down the line? Share your thoughts with us in the comments.

If it's a good port, unlike Dragon Quest Heroes (or so they say), it seems like for once we have the best version. Of course those new scenarios will become DLC for PS4, but still.
I guess Western release won't take long, because this time the localization is already done for PS4.
Hurry up and release it before I buy the PS4 version, I can't hold out much longer
All I want is for the game to come out on a Nintendo system here
Ugh, I literally just bought it on Steam so hopefully these scenarios are ported at some point.
I've been feeling the JRPG itch lately and this would be the perfect solution. I'd want a western release, though. I know the dual account trick is easy enough but localisation makes a huge difference to a game like this.
I suspect we'll be looking at a 2020 Q1 NA release for this. I'm okay with it, so many great games already out!
Finally some footage!
For all we knew, their aversion to showing it could’ve well turned into a Metroid Prime IV situation. Glad it didn’t.
I hope the video quality is a result of how YouTube lowers the quality of videos, because this looks blurry. I knew it wasn’t going to be as sharp as the PS4 version, but come on.
@DockEllisD I'm assuming they'll use the dub from the PS4 version which actually is one of the best dubs I've ever played. They'll just need new voice work for the additional content if it requires
I LOVE IT! Can´t wait!
I’m always skeptical about DQ localizations. Hope it does come over though.
I REALLY hope they use orchestrated tracks instead of MIDI
The port is looking great so far! While I'm disappointed its taken them so long since the initial announcement to actually show it off, I think they've handled the wait in the best way possible by really making this the definitive version of the game. So hyped!
Also, I noticed that none of the clips featured any background music. Maybe this is a tease for symphonic music in the game? It would go well with the 'S' moniker, anyway! That's really one of the few things I want added into the Switch version, a long with HD versions of some of the 3DS edition's exclusive content.
Regardless, I'm beyond hyped for this game, and I'm so, so happy that Squsre actually seems to be putting tons of love and care into making this the absolute best version of the game yet!
It's really sad that Square Enix decided against a localisation of the 3DS version. The HD version might be graphically more impressive, but the 3DS Version was so unique with the concept of displaying the Game on both screens in a modern and retro style.
Since Nintendo said they want to support the 3DS for a litte while longer i have some hope they might step in and localise Dragon Quest 11 for 3DS. Probably won't happen but a man can dream, right?
They've already stated what the content not currently present in the PC and PS4 versions is: it's the choice of who you marry/ live with (instead of the intended person the games creators chose and designed the story around). Unless there's more to it than that, then that's a pretty minor thing, and as someone whose played the game already, it's not something worth buying the Switch version over, especially considering the other versions still look much better.
Also, Japanese VA isn't a selling point, either. Dragon Quest is one of the few JRPG's where British voice acting makes more logical sense than Japanese VA, and the mix of cockney and posh British English VA in these games since VIII has always been part of the series biggest charm.
Nice. Can't wait for it.
Great game... Hard to tell on the video, but seems to look Ok.
Do Not really care about Japanese voice tracks Anymore. Reading subtitles not something I care to do when I get home from work (Especially if I had a long day) on top of text Buble. Just stick with English.
Not that I would have waited one way or the other.
Have they actually announced this version is coming out in the west? I see a lot of comments like this is a sure thing, but as far as I've been able to tell Squeenix were disappointed in the western release of the PS4 version and they're usually quick to pull the plug on Dragon Quest over here.
I'm still holding out buying this on Switch instead of taking the recent 40% cuts for PC-Steam. Damn fools, tell us already. This isn't hard, english or not.
Slime for smash?
Please?
Whatever. I might grab this anyway if somebody from this series really is this "brave" character.
Sucks for PS4 and PC owners that this new content can't be dlc,but whatever,I'm just glad we're getting the game
I will definitely be picking this up if and when it comes to Switch. I really hope they decide to include the 16-bit version from the 3DS release.
Persona 5 S will do the same!
Frothing at the mouth. Woo I can't wait for this. Come on yall tell me when it hits Japan!
I figure by the time it gets localized I will have my interest focused on other titles would be awesome if it would be a sooner than later thing but I know better than to get my hope up.
@DockEllisD the Japanese ps4 version never had va that's why they're recording it now. The english dub on the other hand is already completed.
@Kanbei if and when?
Are people still seriously doubting this game will be released on switch? It's coming out dude. Stop worrying
@DockEllisD well there shouldn’t be much to record in English, besides whatever these new scenes/content are. The game has been localized for PS4 already so most of the heavy lifting should be done.
Lol...nvm, seems like a few expressed this already
@kobashi100 Did it really sound like I was freaking out over here? You seem like the one and that needs to relax. I'm just not sure when it will reach the West.
@kobashi100 and that clearly was not the main point of my post...
I've been playing this on my TV via Steam with a Switch controller, so I guess I'm good. Portability makes a heck of a difference, though. I could sink so many more hours into it that way...
Adding new stuff to this and not the PS4 version would be total BS.
I think it's ridiculous that Square Enix has yet to announce plans to release this outside of Japan. Are they allergic to money?
Gotta do something to entice those who have held out for this version. Kinda makes up for the large graphical downgrade I guess....?
Actually, Square Enix has said that DQ XI S well launch worldwide this year. When? Who knows.
I CAN'T FREAKING WAIT UNTIL IT COMES OUT HERE IN EUROPE/THE WEST! FREAKING HELL! we need another direct where the date is mentionned! or from Enix himself!
Now, when they say "Dragon Quest XI S Will Include Scenarios Not Present In PS4 And PC Versions", do they mean brand new scenarios will be added in addition to the current ones, or that current scenarios will be changed?
@Painkiller_Mike dude they announced it was coming worldwide weeks ago
I've held out so far from buying the PS4 version so far so this is welcome news.
@Kai_ Same here. Like every time it goes on sale for 30 bucks or under I'm like uuuuuuuuggghhhhhnn
Nice, knowing there will be extra content helps resist all the cheap sales of the PC and PS4 version. Can’t wait to be able to play this on the go!
I have been holding off on this game just to get it for the switch. I really can't wait. And it's a nice addition with the extra content, it will be much appreciated.
There definitely is a graphical downgrade with this version. The lighting is different and there's no ambient occlusion.
I was hoping they'd manage to optimise it enough to do a full conversion.
Well if they release this in the West with Japanese voicing I'll double-dip.
@Sakisa The English localization and voice acting are excellent on the PS4 version.
Great game though as commenters have noted by the time the Switch version comes out the PC/PS4 versions will be half the price.
Game looks fabulous. The first mainline DQ game on an HD handheld device (better yet, HD hybrid). That's cause for celebration
Unfortunately this was taking too long so I picked up the PS4 version on sale for 35 bucks, won't be seeing the switch version that cheap ANYtime soon.
@Dezzy The graphical downgrade doesn't bother me much - as long as it's not a full-on mobile demake like FFXV.
@blecch
If someone waited a year for PS4/PC version to drop half price, then they should have no issue waiting another year for the Switch version to drop half price.
If waiting for better value is your jam, you can't do better than waiting for the Switch version. Then you'll get half price and two versions in one.
Guess Sony CENSORSHIP is helping Switch take abite out of their market share. Shame on you SONY so you think your the moral compass but kept going around and around in circles. Must feel good to think inside the BOX.
Have a feeling I'll go for the PS4 version anyway but glad it's coming to Switch as this game suits being on a Nintendo console.
Dragaon Quest is so much less popular in the west because it is always such a question of if and when the west will even get the games...
@Moroboshi876
Is that why no Heroes I+II port for US?
@marandahir Europe neither. I guess this is the problem. They say the port is so bad that Vita version is better.
possibly unpopular opinion incoming
Can they also make the music not suck?
@kobashi100 Fantastic! I assumed that it wasn't for some reason.
Nice, looks like the wait will be worth it.
The exclusive Switch content now makes Erdrick or some DQ rep. even more likely for Smash DLC imo.
@Moroboshi876
It isn't really that DQH isn't a good port; it's that the game just wasn't that great, to begin with, and its flaws were more exposed on the Switch.
@mjhopkins81 Well, I don't know, but it was released on PS4 in the West, in fact both games separately. But technical comparisons made clear that Switch version was below Vita version indeed.
@blecch I know, it was my GOTY last year.
I’ve just learned to never get my hopes up when it comes to DQ sadly...
@Zeraki Not unpopular at all bro. I hate the MIDI and I got used to it in a bad way.
@OmegaYato Ah okay, I'm not really familiar with the series or the community surrounding it so I wasn't sure what the general consensus was among fans.
Now releasing in the west as soon as March 2037
Any true Dragon Quest fan probably already bought the game in either PS4 or PC, especially since they been discounted for a while and the adicional content on Switch it's not worth the wait
Localization isn't guaranteed. Some healthy skepticism is warranted here. Putting your eggs in one basket might lead to disappointment.
As a fan of the series, I couldn't bring myself to wait any longer. I caved a couple months back, and I couldn't be happier that I did! DQXI is a phenomenal JRPG, and you're doing yourself a disservice holding out for a game that may not even get an international release.
DQXI sits rightfully as one of my favorite JRPGs of all time. It's so ridiculously faithful to the classic JRPG formula you'll forget what year it is until its stunning graphics bring you back to 2019. I can go on, but I think you get the point. This game simply oozes quality.
TL;DR:
Don't wait. Get this game.
@jtmnm Localization actually is guaranteed for this game. Square has confirmed several times that DQXI for Switch will release in the West, though I'm not sure if it's coming this year like in Japan. Hopefully it shouldn't take too long for it to come over after the Japanese version since the localization is already done, it just depends on how much translation needs to be done for the new content.
Though I agree with you that this game is awesome, Dragon Quest as a whole is a fantastic and underrated series!
@ilikeike If what you say is true, I'll be double-dipping!
i see that it was worth the wait!
Dragon Quest was awesome when it was an exclusive series to one platform. Now that it has become a multiplatform series it just doesn't feel special anymore. The wow factor that use to be there aren't there anymore and the Switch version seems more like an afterthought rather than an innovative evolution for the series. I'm still going to get this game but only because I got robbed of the 3DS version.
its great that on other platforms its cheaper when released on Switch but that doesnt mean it aint worth the full price.
its very contradictory, that when its 60 on launch day on ps4 and xb1 its okay but then on Switch its a problem because its released later.
@retro_player_22 Honestly, what a weird way of thinking..
@DockEllisD What do you mean? When released in the west, features added included voice acting and the ability to run - things absent in the original Japanese release. So chances are all we have to wait on is the translation of the new scenarios.
@Zeraki Actually the reason for the music is an interesting history, as explored by Stop Skeletons From Fighting on YouTube. Live orchestral versions were recorded, but the composer holds all legal copyrights for it. So, the game itself had to use MIDIs. WHICH wouldn't be all that bad, I mean we could hear some really impressive tracks as far back as Rare's work on the SNES and Nintendo 64, but the MIDI work in Dragon Quest XI is sadly just not very good.

Absolutely love the game, have it on PC and kinda want to double dip for a second play through.
Im pretty sure they will add him as dlc for smash.
@GKO900 uh... Any true Dragon Quest fan would wait for the definitive version with more marriage options, more scenarios and hopefully orchestrated tracks & who knows what else
@The-Chosen-one I hear a rumor that Erdrick will be a fighter with his costumes based on different DQ heroes.
@OmegaYato
man if that is true! Would love that.
@GKO900 Wait, why are you here commenting about that? From what I see from your comments on Push Square, you were attacking Nintendo fans and the Switch because Push Square is filled with PlayStation fanboys who think PlayStation is the greatest of all time. But shouldn't we like all consoles instead of bragging about how one console is better than the other? So I'm curious, did you come to NL just to say that or is it just to spite Nintendo fans?
