The 3rd generation games on GBA looked great at the time, and still do. They have great colors and sprites. That art is timeless.
The gamecube games had some rougher models for older Pokemon but still looked fine. Everywhere else the games showed off wonderful graphics and great effects. I'd argue both gamecube games have a better overall package of graphics and performance than Sword/Shield.
And there's no comparison to the 4th generation games. HGSS in particular look amazing on the DS, and Battle Revolution on the Wii is stunning for a console that is limited to standard definition output.
This game deserves a 4/10 at best, if we are to assume that 5/10 is a "mediocre" game. This game is an unpolished, unfinished, overpriced, outdated, slap in the face to customers. It is below average. It is a bad game.
A bad game can still be fun. If you have fun with this, good for you. I have had fun with a few shovelware games too.
@KryptoniteKrunch Those are usually comments from people that have no experience playing those respective games. Having played both on PS4, neither have any significant issues, and as you said, can be scaled back if a company thinks there is an audience for the game.
Pikmin 2, Custom Robo, Kirby Air Ride, Naruto: Clash of Ninja 2, Sonic Adventure 2 Battle, Pokemon Colosseum, Lord of the Rings: Return of the King, and Spongebob: Battle for Bikini Bottom would all be great picks too.
The Gamecube was my favorite console for a long time, and only recently trumped by PS4. For me, it is the epitome of what I want from a console; great graphics, great games, new IPs, a variety of publisher support.
A hacked Wii U running upscaled Gamecube games has also breathed new life into the library.
The downgrade looks huge, but the Switch version definitely doesn't look ugly. I'd imagine there's a big enough audience on the switch to end up making the port worth it. It has the benefit of being a complete edition and releasing several years later so it's not directly competing with the technically superior versions.
Already as in, we're looking at over 2 years now, and it still hasn't happened. I remember when people were claiming it would only take 1 year, then 1 more year... I'm certain it will happen, and I think it'd be crazy to think otherwise, but... it's a system with handheld appeal in a market that values that tremendously, over a traditional home console.
Can't speak for the Switch port but; great game, definitely recommend. I went in expecting a slow game with a great story, and while it definitely starts that way, I found what really impressed me was how the game played. The use of audio and visual clues for puzzles and combat was an interesting and well done idea. It was satisfying to savagely run up to enemies and jump stab them with the sword.
Seems like a lot of people saying auto renewal isn't an issue. Well, I'm only on PS4, but you have to go out of your way to opt out of auto renewal. I feel like it would be much less deceptive and much more consumer friendly if you had to specifically opt in instead of opt out. It's just another reason I do not store my credit card number on my PSN account.
Edit: Last time I bought a new car, I received a free month of On Star subscription. I was told that if I signed up with an account and put in my credit card number, I could get an additional 2 free months. Being savvy to this type of stuff though, I asked and confirmed my suspicion that auto renewal for the service would be set up and I'd have to cancel later. Was an easy pass for me. Auto renewals exist solely to scam people out of money by preying on their limited memory.
Gears for Breakfast could swoop in and show them how a retro mode should look with A Hat in Time. As in, they could if they stopped being jerks and confirmed the new content will eventually release on consoles too.
One of the best fighting games on the market. Maybe one of the best made since it's not only mechanically solid, but has a wealth of single player content and also tutorials that actually teach you how to play the game from the most basic inputs to performing long combos that will be your bread and butter.
As a super, mega, ultra lightning casual... I don't bother keeping up with the Pokemon TCG 99% of the time because it seems like a constant bombardment of new cards.
I think Pokemon could learn from MTG and create new formats and ways to play the game.
Pokemon Moon was first game in the main series I dropped as soon as the credits rolled. I made no attempt at the Battle Tree, no attempt at trying to get the absurdly hard to encounter Pokemon, no attempt to play online...
The game was just... soulless and boring. For a game that was supposed to be different, it used all the same tricks and just called them with different names, while removing much of what made the previous games fun.
The best thing about generation 7 is that they didn't decide to do the Sinnoh remakes. I consider this a good thing because I wouldn't want them to be tarnished by generation 7's philosophy toward game design.
I'd have some semblance of respect for Sakurai if he took take constructive criticism gracefully. Instead, I'll just point out that winrates across all players are in no way indicative of how well a character is balanced.
Love the new art, especially the wedding-like dress on Ashe. Wonder why Basch is left out though.
I highly recommend FF12 to anyone who enjoys political stories. Parts of the game have a more "show, don't tell" approach to the story telling, which I've always thought was both mature and showed that the writers respected the audience to not overload it with exposition. Being able to appreciate the narrative relies on someone paying attention to context, and being involved with the unfolding events of the FF12's world.
Ivalice is also the best world in Final Fantasy history, hands down.
Way OK game. Worth playing for the trippy ending alone, at the right price.
It is not really and open world game anymore than something like A Link to the Past is. There's a main story where the missions are fine but doesn't feel relevant until the very end, and a few side quests, most of which are missable so they're hardly side quests.
All I see is a long list of games with most not having release dates. Hopefully the Switch in 2019 isn't a "wait until the holiday season" year like 2018.
@smashboy2000 Wii U didn't support some common engines, and it was a bit better than the PS3 and 360, but it's not like it was some untapped powerhouse.
The Wii U hardware in 2013 was nothing short of a slap in the face. Games like Bayonetta 2, MK8 and Fast Racing Neo look as good as they do because of great developers that actually care about making good products with the knowledge of where to make cuts to use enhance performance.
Fast Racing Neo was in many ways a standard definition game. Mario Kart 8 looks amazing, especially for a 2014 game, and that's because of the fundamental design of MK using small, static race tracks.
Again, I'm not saying that these games would have been of the same quality on PS3 or 360. I don't believe that to be the case. But it seems that sometimes we underestimate how big the gap between the Wii U and consoles that launched just a year later was.
This is one remake I'm not sure about, not until closer to release at least. I'd say it was better than MK64 in its time, but I don't know how well it holds up now. Kart racers have come a long way, even if there aren't many contemporaries out on the market right now.
I'm not too sure about the changes to some of the mechanics and how things work in this version. Launch speed, air dodge, and grabbing all seem iffy to me based on gameplay. But I'm excited nonetheless to see how it takes off.
I don't care that it is selling well. I never doubted it would sell well, it's Pokemon after all.
I like the presentation. The art and sound direction is nice.
But the gameplay is too dumbed down, and the restrictions on how you play the game are simply unacceptable. RPGs are always better when the player has more freedom in how it is experienced. It is a defining feature of the genre.
While the Let's Go game (games, but this will surely be successful enough to get sequels) may not impact development of real Pokemon games, it is hard to not look at this and wish that a better spin off game was made with the resources instead.
I'd love to see this get a sequel (not the phone game...). Hopefully Switch owners support the release of a great turn based monster catching RPG.
Unfortunately, it will most likely be overshadowed by Pokemon Let's Go, which is a complete shame. But it wouldn't be the first time that a large part of the Nintendo audience ignores third party games in favor of literally anything with Nintendo's name on it.
@nocdaes @Cobalt This game isn't any easier than older Final Fantasy games. I distinctly remember being able heal outside of battle with cure magic in FF7, one-shotting bosses in FF8 with summons, and several versions of FF4 are famously and hilariously easy.
Final Fantasy hasn't been difficult since the NES.
@alpha5099 I see you've gotten a ton of responses already but I figured I'd throw my 2 cents in anyways;
Disgaea 5 is the better game, no contest. Better mechanics, better cast of characters, and a better story that is still plenty humorous and crazy but also memorable due to how relevant it is for anyone. We can all relate to stories about personal growth and the danger of being solely driven by revenge/hate.
Disgaea 5 is also a prequel to the rest of the series.
World of Final Fantasy Maxima, Disgaea 5, and a bit of Naruto Storm 4 on PS4.
Some Shovel Knight on Wii U probably.
Definitely recommend World of Final Fantasy to anyone who likes turn based monster catching RPGs. I've only heard good things about the Switch port so far.
@Katelyn1223 I don't remember what those chapters involve, but Bayonetta 1 had a lot, A LOT, of quicktime events where failure resulted in instant death.
No, it's because they wanted some gimmick to justify selling two versions. Pikachu is the iconic starter of Yellow version, and in that same game, the rival's starter is Eevee.
@SnowFox I'm sure it's using thunderpunch. That's been a Charizard staple.
Edit: If not exactly the same, these moves are at least animated very similarly to the 3DS games. Thunderpunch even has the fist image over the enemy in its animation.
Seems like an interesting idea. I wonder how hard it will be. I would think, not very, at least for most of the pokemon which have expansive movepools.
Interesting references to the original generation 1 games shown too. Larpas could learn Solarbeam, which is quite odd. In all later games it has not been able to learn Solarbeam, even though it's continuously a TM.
Gyarados has always been able to learn thunderbolt though. Lapras has always been able to learn it also.
They can't and won't learn anything as long as people pay for it. The people who go through all these hoops to justify the cost, even if it is not a lot of money, don't seem to realize that if hardly anyone paid for this terrible service, Nintendo would back pedal real quick.
The Let's Go games would have to be developed by a completely different team than the main series games in order to truly not interfere at all with the main series. Similar to how the Mystery Dungeon games were made by Chunsoft.
Let's see. Even long term fans frequently complain about needing HMs to navigate through the world, and in recent years have voiced disdain for obsessive hand holding and cutscenes.
I think it's pretty easy to see how Pokemon would largely benefit from the open world treatment. I'd argue that it's a much better fit than Zelda.
@RadioHedgeFund I think this is the first time I've ever seen someone say they are happy that a Pokemon game doesn't have secret bases. I'm honestly shocked.
Well yeah, if someone's only experience with playing Pokemon has been through Pokemon Go, then of course Let's Go will be the easiest for them to play.
But is it really the best entry point? None of the Pokemon main series games are complicated from a casual playing perspective, and I'd argue a good game is a better point to get into the series.
"but as soon as I get more than 30 feet away it disconnects"
How many consumers even got the advertised 30 feet range? Mine capped out at like 10 even on day 1, and then completely crapped out in 2015, not even 3 years old.
I hope Nintendo realizes that the Wii U was more than just a commercial failure. It was a horrible piece of hardware that was poorly supported. I'd like to think Nintendo has learned, but in many ways the Switch's success is simply from looting the Wii U's corpse for valuables. It doesn't take effort to re-release already made gems.
@EvilLucario Never played any of the Ys series and as much as I like Final Fantasy, I was never interested in 15 thematically so I can't speak for either of those.
But yeah, not a fan of the combat where the characters do basic attacks automatically and you pick when to do skills.
@EvilLucario I'll admit, I've never played any of the Xenoblade games because I don't like the type of gameplay.
But... I've never played them because they all seem to have the same type of gameplay that I don't like (specifically the auto combat), so while I'm sure each game in the series (and X spinoff) is different, they look mostly similar. Perhaps taking the series in a different direction could be in more subtle or superficial ways that don't actually change much.

@johnvboy I would strongly disagree with that...

Re: Poll: Which Starter Pokémon Is The Best? Choose Your Favourite Fire-Type Starter
Based on the entire lines;
1. Cyndaquil
2. Fennekin
3. Torchic
4. Chimchar
5. Charmander
6. Litten
7. Scorbunny
8. Tepig...
If we're going just by the starter itself, probably Torchic.

@talgore It shouldn't take a few hours just to beat the intro level.
The city ruins is essentially the hub through which you navigate to the linearly designed levels like the desert, amusement park, forest, etc...
I'm just not convinced you actually played it. Like, at all.
