That Splatoon 2 opening is incredible. Its launch has outsold Breath of the Wild and Mario Kart 8 deluxe, both of which have sold incredibly well. Arms and Final Fantasy 12 doing good warms my soul. The low opening sales for Fate/EXTELLA is unsurprising, it looks terrible compared to the other musou games on the market.
I love the Pikmin series, and I'm fine with spin off games. Some of my favorite games are spin off titles of larger series (Final Fantasy Tactics, Pokemon Mystery Dungeon), but this just looks like crap. If someone was tossing ideas around for a Pikmin spinoff, I'd much rather see something like what was shown off in Nintendoland for Wii U, rather than a dime-a-dozen 2D action game.
@PlywoodStick I can only imagine how demanding that would be on the hardware, and how much the visuals for such a game would have to be compromised to make that possible. Better yet, what does that actually accomplish? Zelda is a single player game with single player objectives, so what would be the point of local multiplayer except that you and a pal both want to play Zelda at one time but you only have one console?
If you could just manually turn on or off which items can appear like in Smash Bros, then everyone can be happy. Bananas only at 200cc is the only way to go.
Looks like the cutscene animations haven't improved since the Sonic Adventure games, which weren't good even back then. Then again, with the edginess and cheesy music, and multiple playable characters, this is looking a lot like the Sonic Adventure games, which in spite of everything, were still fun to play. Maybe this is a sign that forces will follow suit? That's probably the best anyone can reasonably hope for.
Can't get behind Splatoon with its gimped online system and customization. Nonetheless I am quite happy to see such a glowing review, and hope the game is as enjoyable for returning fans. Another hit game on the Switch goes a long way to drive sales and continued success.
@ThanosReXXX Just FYI, @Anti-Matter has publicly posted here admitting to some form of mental condition (autism, asperger, can't remember). While I definitely don't share the same opinion of him, I'd hardly call his posts "attacking" toward anyone, and in an article about Ubisoft announcing that they will have more games to announce, stating what kind of games you'd like to see is definitely on topic.
Miiverse was good fun. The main draw was sharing funny screenshots or drawing things related to current games and having your friends and even random people online see your mark. Unfortunately, it wasn't implemented that well beyond that, and took a major turn for the worse when they attempted to overhaul it.
Seems like they actually look good aside from the usual supports. I know people have made hobbies of customizing amiibo, so I wonder how easy it is to take off the supports without damaging the figures in the process.
Although I'd be even more interested in the younger character variants. They just had more appeal to me.
After the overwhelming fan appreciation for the Pokemon Generations shorts, I really think there's enough of an audience for a serious Pokemon anime based off the actual games or even the Pokemon Adventures manga. Until then though I guess they'll keep Ash around as he's probably more marketable and the cycle of rebooting the cartoon for each new generation is a way to pull in more children without them missing any story context.
@MegaVel91 Of course, but does someone who selflessly sacrifices themselves to save someone or something else change the fact that the act saving the other thing killed them?
@JaxonH A fact would be that Nintendolife's own review gave it an 8/10, which indeed corresponds to "great". Another fact would be that It's above an 80% on Metacritic, which is a great achievement and marks a well reviewed game.
Now of course I'm not gonna claim that you have to agree that the game is great. Everyone has their own preferences. But your negative opinion about the quality of the game as an attempt to rebuke the claims of the developer is indeed salty.
@MegaVel91 Observations about Japanese culture and the work ethic and expectations that come with it. Also the situation Nintendo was in at the time, and the numerous times Iwata stepped up to try and make things better, despite he himself not being in great health.
@JaxonH Your entire comment comes off just as salty. Odd world New n Tasty was highly reviewed. Passing it off as not that great is indeed a reactionary comment and a great disservice.
@Wexter Oh sure, it's a cultural issue and there is a long history and reason behind it. But the main idea or speculation is simply that Iwata was working so hard for his company to try and turn things around that it negatively impacted him. Certainly doesn't seem outside the realm of possibility based on our observations.
I legitimately don't understand the outrage over his comments about Iwata. I find it very possible that the stress of his job and work ethic for the company and industry he was obviously passionate about contributed negatively toward his already poor health and could have sped along his death. Remember the reports that he was contributing to Pokémon GO while hospitalized? That's not something I'd consider normal.
That said, I'm not entirely convinced about the rest of what he says. Nintendo definitely could have done a better job promoting his game on the eshop, but ultimately I think it would have made little difference. You have to optimize how much effort goes into promoting something compared to how well you expect or need it sell.
I think his point about cartridges is off the mark though.
Nintendo systems cleaning house thanks to the 3DS. I wonder if they will be able to secure more parts for the Switch to increase production levels again. Right now PS4 is outselling the Switch for the past couple of weeks.
@PanurgeJr That would make sense if the notion of sticking up for someone was ever considered petty. I'd encourage you to let old grudges go. If you've been forced to ignore a certain user, getting around that by having others fight your battles for you and harass users certainly isn't the route of moral high ground.
@PanurgeJr I can't even imagine the level of pettiness it takes for someone to give advice on how to harass another user, one that you can't personally harass yourself due to moderators apparently.
While Nintendo waits for parts and production lines, it'd probably be good to fix how they are distributing these Switches. Sold out in some locations, not selling squat in others... Of course if new stock is still selling out it probably doesn't matter that much to them anyways.
Not surprising. Unless the Switch is incredibly easy and cheap to port games to (of which there are conflicting stories) there is no reason to bother porting these types of games where they will be lucky to sell 100K copies, as opposed to guaranteed million sellers on other devices which also sport the better online functionality anyways.
Nintendolife is hardly the only site doing this, but I find it funny this update is attributed to "balance changes", when most of the notable things are straight bug fixes.
Not being able to stop the item wheel online was not intentional. Being able to block with an item and quickly use it just after was not intentional. Controls acting unresponsive? Clearly unintentional.
Terrible list. Super Mario Kart has been outclassed by every subsequent release. Everything about Mario Kart 8 is better, and the worst part of the game is ironically the coin system they tried to implement, taken from Super Mario Kart.
Kirby Air Ride undoubtedly got votes because it is an insanely fun and addicting game, although in no parts due to its actual racing. We'll probably never get the City Trial dedicated sequel we want.
As an adult with adult sized hands, the speaker placement really is a deal breaker. My hands often muffle the speaker on my phone when I'm holding it upright. It's a shame, because I love everything else about this model.
I'm interested for sure. I would much rather have gotten more games and only one controller though, especially since the overwhelming majority of the games are strictly single player. Peeps can always run out and buy another controller for Super Mario Kart, or heaven forbid if Nintendo actually made enough of these, your friend could just bring the controller from their own SNES classic.
But $80 for actually good emulation of several classic games and a sweet physical collector/nostalgia item seems good. A Link to the Past and FF3/6 are some of my favorite games ever.
Nintendo started their foray into DLC so strong. Pikmin 3 extra maps were reasonably priced and offered good play value. Mario Kart 8 DLC blows most other DLC expansions out of the water. Smash Bros and Hyrule Warriors added new characters at good intervals and were reasonably priced compared to the rest of the industry too.
But now in more recent times we get things like this, Fire Emblem, and (while not paid) limited distribution of mega stones that are tied to your current save file in Pokémon. Nintendo went from arguably the best, to arguably one of the worst in such a short time.
@Switch81tch Getting a few good third party games is probably the best we can hope for the Switch, but it's obviously not ideal. People would like third party parity on a Nintendo console, which is far from a bad thing to want, it's just not realistic due to Nintendo keeping a different stance with their hardware.
This looks like the game we wanted a long time ago. The only negative is that we had tthe suffer through Mighty No. 9 first, which is probably the game we deserved after so many people trashed Capcom and put blind faith into the guy who created the artwork of Mega Man.
Love the Wii U version, but this looks like a testament to how horrendous it was for some indie developers to make games for the Wii U. Why else bother making a severely downgraded version for a system that is easier to develop for and has a much bigger install base?
Edit: Didn't even realize this was New 3DS exclusive. So yeah, not sure why this even exists or how smart of a move it was to make this kind of port.
@MrGawain Well, Sony's model this entire generation has been to release their games in the earlier part of the year, while western third parties or other big games usually take the holiday period. They've been successful with that too, and so has Nintendo. If third parties feel like they need to have the new holiday releases to shine, so be it. Nintendo and Sony have shown with their games that release before then and aren't suddenly forgotten about come the holidays.
As for the games releasing though, the truth is actually that those games, regardless of being sequels or exclusives, are major releases. Glad you are stoked for Mario Odessey. But the most press covered game that received the most attention was found to be AC Origins.
@MrGawain Glad you're enjoying the Switch! You seem to have a strange perception of the market though. There have been several highly rated and successful game releases on PS4 so far this year, including your example of Horizon Zero Dawn, which has sold over 3.4 million copies.
I'm not too keen on the idea of introducing more 3rd party characters after Smash 4 already had several. I much prefer the idea of keeping the games closer to a celebration of Nintendo's gaming history, rather than the industry as a whole. I mean, if we were going down that path, may as well throw in Sony and Microsoft characters...
@NEStalgia It could very well be that combat in Skyrim was made more involved than previous games. The animations though, are undoubtedly clunky, in first or third person. Breath of the Wild is clearly better animated and more fluid. But in terms of gameplay, I find combat in Skyrim to be very action driven. I'm sure that feeling comes from having to manage actually aiming all of your attacks or blocks, and doing so while trying to move around your enemies and not be caught in an unfavorable position, all at the same time.
@NEStalgia That seems like a very unfair analysis of Skyrim's combat from someone who admittedly has put very little time into the game. I loved the combat in Breath of the Wild, but during my 60 hour playthrough, most of it was standing around swinging my weapon and reacting in time to get a flurry rush. Combat is Skyrim is indeed different, but I'd argue far more action oriented and demanding than BoTW, especially seeing as how moving and attacking at the same time is such an important skill (unless you're playing a dedicated tank build I guess).
@DoctorWily I meant that you don't have to do those things in order to finish the main story of the game. Unless you want to play around with the Blades, which I can best describe as like setting up your own little guild and recruiting people, you have no reason to even bother with them or kill Paarthunax. That is not part of the main story.
Same thing with the Civil War. You do not have to pick a side to progress the main story.
I mean yeah, obviously you can do all of those things, and I'd argue that all of that content is worth seeing at least once in some way, but if you were just trying to finish the main story before moving on to the Switch version, a lot of that stuff is not the main story. Sorry if I misunderstood.
@DoctorWily The blades want you to kill Paarthunax, but you don't have to do that, or even make a decision on it unless you absolutely want to keep being involved with the blades. Otherwise, you can just ignore them.
If you haven't finished the Civil War, you also don't have to do that. Instead, you should be prompted to hold a peace meeting between both sides of the war so that you can settle the events that you need to do in Whiterun without that town being in fear of being attacked.
LOL at the complaints over the price. The game is newly remastered with much higher resolution textures that actually show off the intricate details in the world, better lighting, engine updates, all of the DLC expansions made for the game, and Switch exclusive content, all on top of a game that offers hundreds of hours of content and is a pinnacle of open world RPG design.
The Switch seems so far to be a case of Nintendo doing well at being different. Their product is fairly unique and fulfills a desire in the market. There's also no denying that Nintendo puts out a high volume of colorful looking games that are also appropriate for children.
Despite this though, I disagree with some of the implications that seem to be present in the article. Nothing wrong with preferring Nintendo's output, but there are a lot of colorful, vibrant, and artistic games on competing game systems too. Looking at E3 and claiming many of the games were brown and grey is a huge disservice to the artwork for those games. If anything, having such a high volume of games with differing art styles ranging from games like Ori, to Super Lucky, to God of War, is a strength.
It doesn't seem that well of a fit for the super competitive, but ultimately it just comes down to the community of players and what they want. When we look at things like Smash Bros. I see a gaming community that decided to strip most of the content out of the game just to satisfy a niche play style preference and call that "competitive".
I'm quite disappointed in Microsoft's attempts to vilify Sony over such a small thing. I can't say I'm too surprised that it is working though, what with all the knee-jerk reaction mentality of internet commenters.
@IceClimbers You seem to have a problem seeing things as more than simply black or white. The Switch is a Hybrid. By your own logic, there must also be a reason it functions as a home console too. The PS4 having a strong focus on the Western market does not mean that it is not also focusing on the Japanese market and getting attention from that market. There is no denying the success of the PS4 in Japan. Home consoles are not "dead", especially not in an era where we are getting back to having an increase in home console games from Japanese developers.
@IceClimbers The dominance of handheld devices hardly makes home consoles "dead". Recent trends show home consoles having a much more difficult time to be sure, but trends can and do change. I'm not going to make the claim that home consoles will ever be successful as the outrageously popular PS2, but saying home consoles are dead just because the PS4 isn't pulling PS2 numbers, Microsoft didn't try to capture the Japanese audience at all, and the Wii U was a dud everywhere including Japan, is absurd.
@CrazedCavalier Sure, but sales still carry on, even if in smaller amounts. Case in point how incredibly well Mario Kart 8 did on the Wii U. It's sold over 8 million copies to date, but in Summer 2015 (around a year after the initial release) it was around 5 million. No reason to believe that FF15 sales will not continue to be good.
@CrazedCavalier You are comparing game sales of games that had years to sell to an install base that was the largest ever in Japan at the time, to a game that is less than a year old and still selling on a console that is also still growing. Sorry, that's just plain dumb.
@CrazedCavalier No, your point doesn't stand. You continue to just make things up as if they are true. FF15 sold over a million copies in Japan. That is a huge deal in Japan, and a high attatch rate among Japanese PS4 owners.
@CrazedCavalier The PS4 after 2 and a half years on the market overtook Wii U, which had been on the market nearly 4 years. Your "fact" earlier, is factually wrong. Switch is doing good too, but you are crazy if you think the PS4 install base isn't in Japan.

Re: Editorial: Nintendo Switch is About Colour, Fun and Sharing Games, For Those Unsure of Its Purpose
Re: Talking Point: How ARMS Can Punch Its Way Into Competitive Gaming
It doesn't seem that well of a fit for the super competitive, but ultimately it just comes down to the community of players and what they want. When we look at things like Smash Bros. I see a gaming community that decided to strip most of the content out of the game just to satisfy a niche play style preference and call that "competitive".
Re: Xbox Boss Wades In On Sony's Decision To Block Minecraft Cross-Platform Play
I'm quite disappointed in Microsoft's attempts to vilify Sony over such a small thing. I can't say I'm too surprised that it is working though, what with all the knee-jerk reaction mentality of internet commenters.
Re: Capcom Not Confirming Plans for Monster Hunter XX on Switch in the West 'At This Time'
@IceClimbers You seem to have a problem seeing things as more than simply black or white.
Re: Capcom Reportedly Has No Plans to Bring Monster Hunter XX for Switch to the West

Re: Capcom Has No Plans to Bring Monster Hunter XX for Nintendo Switch to the West
@CrazedCavalier You are comparing game sales of games that had years to sell to an install base that was the largest ever in Japan at the time, to a game that is less than a year old and still selling on a console that is also still growing. Sorry, that's just plain dumb.
Re: Capcom Has No Plans to Bring Monster Hunter XX for Nintendo Switch to the West
@CrazedCavalier No, your point doesn't stand. You continue to just make things up as if they are true. FF15 sold over a million copies in Japan. That is a huge deal in Japan, and a high attatch rate among Japanese PS4 owners.
Re: Capcom Has No Plans to Bring Monster Hunter XX for Nintendo Switch to the West
@CrazedCavalier The PS4 after 2 and a half years on the market overtook Wii U, which had been on the market nearly 4 years. Your "fact" earlier, is factually wrong. Switch is doing good too, but you are crazy if you think the PS4 install base isn't in Japan.
