If Animal Crossing: New Horizons isn't the first entry you've played in Nintendo's lifestyle simulation series before, you'll probably know that quite a lot is missing from the game in its current state.
While there's no guarantee certain characters and buildings will return, recently discovered villager dialogue seems to suggest the art gallery section of Blathers' museum – fake paintings and all – could be making a comeback, perhaps even as DLC.
Now, to add to this, an in-game recording doing the rounds on Twitter captures a villager making reference to Brewster – the recurring pigeon character who has appeared throughout the series, and ran his own cafe in Animal Crossing: New Leaf.
A separate screenshot, in French, even makes reference to 'The Roost' – aka. Brewster's coffee shop in New Leaf.
While there's more evidence circulating, we'll cut to the chase and say it all points towards more content – and potentially DLC – being added to the game in the near future. For now, though, it should be treated as regular Animalese chatter and nothing more.
Do you think we'll see more familiar animal faces set up shop in New Horizons? Share your thoughts below.

YESSSS! Brewster is my favorite recurring AC character! I was literally just saying in the art museum thread that I would love it if they added a coffeshop with it being run by none other than the amazing Brewster. The origins of his special homemade "pigeon milk" are questionable at best, but it doesn't deter me. I swallow it by the load. His coffee and milk that is.
@Andy_Witmyer Mine too. Whenever I was stressed IRL, I’d stop by Brewster’s for a nice, hot cup of joe.
For some strange reason I enjoy having a daily coffee in Animal Crossing so Brewster would definitely be welcome.
Aight, now they're teasing. Love Brewster.
The cynic in me wants to say these are just references leftover or something but...
1. They did say more content would come in the form of free updates - this trend is backed up because many of the same people worked on Splatoon 1+2 which followed the same pattern of free updates.
2. We've had a bunch of little updates so far - fixing bugs. But who is to say that they didn't sneak in a few lines of dialogue too?
I really did find his presence chill in Wild World. I would literally go down to get a cup of coffee there every day that I played it (or in other words, I went there hundreds of times) - and this without his coffee actually doing anything.
Thinking about it now, I think it would be really awesome if Nintendo added a gameplay element to drinking coffee. Perhaps one would have a temporary boost in energy, or run faster or maybe craft more efficiently (and twice as much if you build up the rapport necessary for him to offer a splash of pigeon milk).
I really hope he comes back, the museum’s great in this game and having a proper café inside it would be seriously cool.
I hope this is an optional inclusion, because I don't want any reminders of the sucky side of life, including reminders of how much the world is in love with the goddamn stench of coffee.
@OrangeSoda Mmmm, coffee smell is so good. Proper filtered cheap-ass coffee out a pot in a terrible diner is one of life’s few pleasures.
@OrangeSoda because paying off a loan isn’t a reminder of how sucky life can be?
The game is like this so we can expect things and couldn't be spoiled completely by time travelers. I would have much rather this all have been in the full release but considering how rampant people are to spoil things before they naturally happen and enjoy it I'm not surprised.
I wonder if the coffee will actually make you faster, or even too jittery sometimes, so it's like a status effect? Oh my gosh the possibities make me giddy.
@echoplex Patiently paying off a loan is easy. Convincing people that they're polluting my airspace with the worst stench on earth, not so much.
Coffee is the bane of my existence.
My current Wish List for additional content for AC: New Horizons:
1) Additional Buildings/Shops (such as Brewster's or Celeste's Observatory)
2) Return of Redd, Kapp'n, and other missing NPCs
3) Return of swimming
4) More collectibles (fossils, fish, bugs, art, fruit, flowers, minerals/building materials, etc.)
5) More items, decorative and interactive scenery to spend Nook Miles points on
6) Expansions for the Museum (Art Section) and Nook's Cranny (like the fancy final upgrade in City Folk and New Leaf)
7) More travel options (additional islands, island types such as volcanic, perhaps even the mainland) to make it a bit easier to collect rare fruit/flowers/etc.; limiting access to certain items behind online functionality can be very hit-and-miss
8) The ability to add higher cliffs and caves/caverns with terraforming (perhaps with their own resources/items)
9) More items for sale at Nook's Cranny and Able Sisters
@OrangeSoda : I don't hate coffee, but I used to work at the markets and an older gentleman used to give me a cup of what was quite possibly the worst coffee I've ever had, and I was too polite to refuse (though I told him repeatedly that he needn't oblige). Fortunately, I only worked weekends, but he gave me one almost every morning that I worked.
I probably threw a lot of them out, though I tried to do the honourable thing as often as possible and still drink it (albeit whilst holding my breath or even pinching my nose in order to disguise the horrible aroma).
@Heavyarms55
Both dialogues (art gallery, Brewster) have been there since v1.1.0 at least, the day 1 update.
I wonder if it's something like the translators weren't told which bits were being held back for later release, and added Brewster in lines which didn't have him.
I found two dialogues about Brewster.
This one (17 cups of coffee is 3 too many) — in Japanese was 'I've still got lots of energy! I was just thinking about what I'm gonna play next,'
There's another reference too.
I'm not sure how to trigger it, but it's in a file full of dialogue about different times (dinnertime, sleeping, March).
In English:
'I guess I'm not very mature because folks keep saying, "You're not very mature!"
So I've been tryin' to come up with ways to be more mature! I'm a grown up! I gotta act like it!
One mature thing I started doing is making coffee to drink with my morning snacks!
But my coffee is the WORST! It's just angry hot black water!
I gotta be doin' something wrong! Brewster makes good coffee. I'll ask him what kinda socks he uses.'
(Japanese version is basically: 'I've been trying to grow up, so I've been trying mature things...
like black coffee! If I can down black coffee, I'll be mature... But when I drink it before bed, I can't get to sleep.')
@bluesun How are you sure you've got the right Japanese matching the English? Do you have a way of dumping the dialogue? Seems like it would be hard to trigger the same conversation with the same character in two different games. Or can you change the language on your Switch and have it change in game? I've never actually tried that.
I hope they add Gyroids too!
@Heavyarms55
I found a v1.1.0 text dump. Finding which file has an English line, I can find the corresponding Japanese in the corresponding Japanese file.
You can actually change the language for New Horizons by changing the Switch language, but you need to close the game and restart the Switch. So yeah it'd be very hard to know if lines are exact matches without a text dump.
@bluesun Ah, so someone did get a text dump somehow. I suppose that shouldn't surprise me, there are people who already have a hacking tool to cheat in whatever items they want.
The same people who made PokeHex apparently - the save file editor for Pokemon.
Does anyone else remember Nookington's Department Store or am I the only one that wants to see it make a comeback?
@OrangeSoda Kinda rare to hear people saying how much they hate coffee these days – it's like the world has gone under a trance-like spell over the stuff. That's fine - but it's kinda nice, and kinda rare to hear some opinion to the opposite extreme. I too literally cannot stand the stuff, or it's absolutely horrendous smell - and never have. The posh coffee shops everywhere these days are wasted on me – the fanciest thing I want from them is maybe an Earl Grey, or one of them them Turmeric Lattes with almond milk.
HOWEVER, In AC I can indulge the coffee culture without having to actually taste the damn stuff.
I'd be happy to have more than 2 stores in general.
I miss the playable Nes games from the GameCube version. About as much as I miss. Loved it in the day but the changes they've made since make it so much more enjoyable. Posting fossils away to be appraised! Spent half my playing time doing that! More content added the better though. I sound like a stuck record but DLC fits perfectly for this game. Drip feeding new content. Nothing worse than that sense of pride finishing a museum collection followed by the realisation that there is nothing new to find. Keep it coming Nintendo!
@brunojenso The dude in Starbucks switched out my honey latte for a turmeric one and it’s quite possibly the worst thing I’ve ever tasted. It’s... just wrong.
@nessisonett Haha, yes it's an acquired taste many never acquire
If you think that's bad, try a beetroot latte!
I'm actually getting quite tired of everyone desperate to find out all the new and upcoming stuff in AC - and then NL splashing it all over the news pages every time. I don't want to stop coming to NL, but how about letting people explore all the things the game has to offer for a change rather than speculating about every single new thing?
@mr_benn the thing is that there isnt much to discover right now at all as most standard AC features have been cut. The speculation is all we're talking about because there is nothing to spoil. People are desperate to find hints of things to do and that's no one's fault but Nintendo's for releasing a game with an Anthem-level lack of content.
There is also a pier...?
@Peterjr1 I totally get what you're saying. But I don't think that AC has ever really been a game for people who are desperate for things to do. I've been with AC from the very beginning and it's always been a game to do a few things every day and then move on, not something to be playing for hours at a time. I know it's new, and we're all under lockdown and people are trying to wring as much entertainment as possible out of their recent £50 purchase, but for me it's never quite been the attitude of the game. I would say it's much more of a game with a long tail then a few hours of bombast and then you're done - but then that really is just me.
@Gurtelytis There's one on my island. Has been since day one.
@status-204 dataminers and time travellers.
@mr_benn I know that as I've been playing since Wild World and put thousands of hours into the series by this point. It's not about wanting to do tons of things in a day but having options of things to do in the day. Do I fish for a bit or do I go diving? Do I focus on sorting out the garden or go work in the cafe and call it a day? Do I focus on grabbing up all the stuff to sell or do I move some furtniture around in my house and play some minigames. You're right that AC games are about longevity but removing things doesn't give you longevity at all. Removing two different collection items (sea creatures and art) and almost all interactivity outside of the bare minimum and making your island pretty doesn't add longevity or promote the kind of gameplay AC is known for.
It’s almost like...they are going to add content like they’ve been saying for months now? Maybe pay attention next time instead of panicking about the exclusion of shampoodle
@Peterjr1 for you
@Crockin we've already had this conversation. You don't need to reply to me again on another article.
@Peterjr1 I dont NEED to, no. But I like to
@Peterjr1 agree on the art and sea creatures stuff. I wonder how we might perceive this if this had been the first one in the series - rather than the 5th (?). I miss collecting the NES games, but that's long gone once they realised they can monetize creaky old NES ROMs!
I should think that players starting in 6 months or 1 year's time will end up having a very different experience to those of us starting now.
@OrangeSoda as someone with quite an intense sense of smell I feel you and I can only sympathise. As a coffee lover, well...
@mr_benn yeah I imagine (if the DLC is more than just the seasonal events which is all they're promised so far) that if I didn't pre-order this game and instead got it after a while I would be more pleased but the 10/10 reviews assured me beforehand that this was a game I had to get asap lmao.
Yeah the minigames in the house I was referring to were the ones in the consoles in New Leaf! They had the island escape from Amiibo Festival which was really weirdly addictive and a puzzle game which I've forget the name of but was actually pretty in-depth. There are also the island minigames in New Leaf that aren't in NH but those were the ones I was talking about haha.
I think it's been obvious from the beginning that Nintendo was always planning to bring back at least some of the things currently missing in this installment. I actually rather like this approach. Instead of unlocking everything in the first couple weeks, we're going to gradually given reasons to keep coming back. This will of course be less relevant to those who buy the game further down the line, but I still think its neat.
I'm still skeptical of the eventual paid DLC though. I mean, I don't think Nintendo will try to sell us stuff that should have been in the game from the beginning, but until they start confirming some of this upcoming content it's gonna be a nagging worry in the back of my mind.
Brewster is not a feature I ever really understood the appeal of personally. I'm more excited for Redd and the paintings/artwork coming back.
@Harmonie Whether you understand the appeal or no, more content is never a bad thing. Considering we paid $60 for this as opposed to $30 or $40 (It's been a long time, I don't remember which.) for New Leaf, which had more content out of the box and eventually got a sizable free update, I'm certainly hoping Nintendo at least adds back in most of the stuff found in previous games and a few new things besides before they even think of trying to sell us any paid DLC. We know it's coming and I'm okay with that if it's good, just don't try to sell us stuff that should've already been there, Nintendo.
@Donald_M Of course, I'm not saying that Brewster shouldn't be added back and I am happy for those who like him. I just don't see the appeal myself. Plus, I thought the info of the plan for him to return was already found in the code early after the game was released.
@Harmonie I don't know about that. As far as I know the only clues to Redd and Brewster's return right now is lines of dialogue spoken by certain villagers. It's not much, but it's reason to be optimistic.
@Donald_M I remember clear as day that people had looked into the coding and saw signs of a cafe and art in the museum.
To me it was never a matter of if, but rather when. The fact that the villagers are now talking about it is the biggest news here, as it means it may be coming soon now.
Don't want to get anyone's hopes up, though. Things are rather wild in the world right now with the coronavirus and developers do need to prioritize their safety over video game updates.
@Harmonie Okay, I haven't heard about that but I have no reason not to believe you.
Anyway yeah, the dialogue that's been popping up, which seems to have been added after the game's release, is a hopeful sign but we shouldn't get our hopes up we'll see any of this too soon because, as you said, we have no way of knowing how the current crisis might be affecting Nintendo's plans. Luckily I'm the patient sort. I can wait and in the meantime we still have Earth Day to look forward to later this month.
To be fair and as an Animal Crossing fan, I loved New Leaf and was expecting similar with New Horizons, but it feels rather bare bones to me right now. Many, many furniture sets are missing, diving is gone, the art is gone, coffee is gone, balloons are gone, dialogues are more repetitive, etc. I don't mind dataminers as I like to have an idea of what the game can offer, and I was upset when I noticed how little we had with the base game. New Leaf had a lot to offer in its first day. I'm just hoping we get many free updates and those are fixed, because it feels very lacking and I do prefer the 3DS version as of now.
@AtlanteanMan Agree with all of this! I really want to see Nook's Cranny expand to Nookington's again. We've never seen Able's expand in previous games, but it'd be dope to have them expand in this game to include Labelle, Kicks, and perhaps even Gracie? The last one might not make sense for her character but the first two definitely!
@Donald_M On The Bell Tree Forums there was a datamine topic shortly after release and I remember a lot of people mentioning that they found some kind of data relating to a cafe and art. No models for Brewster and Redd. However, I don't think the model for Zipper was added until the last moment either, and I don't think there is one for Leif currently even though we know for sure he's coming soon.
I would say don't expect it 100%. However, seeing as these interactions have only been reported having happened recently, that means they were in a recent patch, which means that the developers were releasing those now. That gives hope to the idea of these still being planned imminently. But I don't know how things work, as I'm not a developer.
@nintendork64 I just want to have more than one upgrade for nooks cranny
Where's the picture from? Looks like an anime.
@Daniel36 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/D%C5%8Dbutsu_no_Mori_(film)
I've been anticipating Brewster's cafe since day one. I have a cliff top cleared off and reserved for him.
@brettsynthetic Thanks Brett. Didn't know this existed.
@Daniel36 happy to help :]
i have lost all my hope Brewster is coming to Animal Crossing New Horizons, Ninji Datamine of version 1.5.0 have the reference to Gyriods removed, sadly we only gonna meet Brewster on the next mainline of the franchise on Switch sucessor.
