Re: Best Metroid Games Of All Time

fluggy

2D are my fave and Super is my no.1. I never thought the games translated well to 3D. Made revisiting screens really monotonous! Other M is a real favourite of mine. It got some pretty high praise on release from many mags. Using the nunchuk control config in Dolphin Emulator makes the Other M controls absolutley perfect, combining the z button with the wiimote for seamless missile aiming and the nunchuk stick for movement instead of the wiimote's d-pad!

Re: Round Up: The Reviews Are In For Metroid Prime 4: Beyond

fluggy

Love 2D Metroid ... the 3D ones ... not so much. Personally didnt think the gameplay translated very well over to 3D. Respawning enemies were tolerable in 2D ... the same insect spawning from the same location EVERY time you re-enter a room in the Prime games ... kinda ruined the immersion for me. In fact, I much prefer Other M to the Prime Trilogy! They were decent ... thats all. Averaging an 8/10 (putting it on par with Other M) is extremely disappointing for a holiday-release, marquee title, weve waited 20 years for! Expected them to take the time and effort to knock it out the park with this one!!

Re: Best Zelda Games Of All Time

fluggy

Fave series ... adore most of them but Echoes was an absolute stinker. Took me multiple attempts, restarting repeatedly coz I found it such an ill-advised snore fest. Stacking beds repeatedly isnt fun ... those awful void levels weren't fun and the combat was terrible! Totally forgetable!!

Re: Review: Hollow Knight: Silksong - Nintendo Switch 2 Edition - Woven To Brutal Perfection

fluggy

Oh man .... twisted, brutal, challenging, UNFAIR (sometimes - spent 7 stubborn, early hours on that blasted Beastfly boss fight -GGGGRRRRR) desolate, oppressive, beautiful, haunting, intricate, charming but most of all ... just super fun. The generosity of the package (FREE on Gamepass!!!!) shouldn't be understated also and given the quality and popularity of the original, Team Cherry could've justifiably and reasonably sold it for 4 times the price and fans wouldve still lapped it up. The first Hollow Knight really is the BEST the MV genre has to offer and might be my fave game ever (even better than Super Metroid), but playing Silksong constantly reminded me why I vowed never to replay the original Hollow Knight. Its sooooo stressful and intense. I'll do the same with Silksong ... 100% it, then draw a line and always have the fond memories! Easy 10/10 for me!

Re: Opinion: Silksong's Tight Construction Is Exactly What I Need After Too Much Open-World Loafing

fluggy

I'm loving it ... challenging (sometimes frustrating as hell - Chapel of the Beast took me 7 hours of stubborness), beautiful, desolate, intricate ... but most of all fun ... And the price tag is super generous given the success of the first HK. Team Cherry couldve easily and justifiably charged 3-4 times as much and fans wouldve still lapped it up. Win win all round!!!

Re: Mario Kart World Has Been Updated To Version 1.2.0, Here Are The Full Patch Notes

fluggy

I'll be testing it after work but the AI so far in offline knockout is absolutely shocking. Skill has nothing to do with it and its impossible to consistently 3 star or come first due to getting completely shafted royally by the computer characters ... over and over. They always seem to get triple red and blue shells at the last corner ... weird, when im in fourth i get banana and a feather. Even if they dont get items they always pass me ... I can take the last corner perfectly, at full speed and the cheating A.I. still overtake me WITHOUT items!

EDIT: Just did offline Knockout 150cc without drift boosting and came first (3 star) twice in 2 different races ... the AI really eased off on me at the end. . . Slowing down at the last bend and not using a mushroom they had ... its one extreme to the other... too hard or too easy . How can you get 1st in Mario Kart 150cc without drift boosting?? 34 years of Mario Kart development and they can't get the A.I. right on a game they claim is worth $80.
Edit: Main thing i'm noticing is im getting coin boxes a lot while in first place now ... weird addition.
Edit .... Just did my five remaing 150cc knockouts back to back, did each first time trying , getting 3 stars in each. Useless now, zero challenge. They really dont have any idea how to balance this game!

Re: PSA: You Can Still Play One Game Across Two Switches, But Not Online Anymore

fluggy

The way they lied is the problem ... "the old system will still work" ... um ... no it doesnt!!! This Virtual Game Cards crap seems to have nothing to do with convenience for the customer and is more like an underhand, sneaky DRM control tactic, a cunning, sneaky, under-the-radar ploy to REMOVE an advertised feature that families have relied on for years!! They could have easily ensured that this would still be possible with the new update!!! They didnt even tell their loyal fans this update would break game sharing. Kids had to discover that themselves when they get booted out of Splatoon 2 for the 8th time when tryin to play with their sibling!! I (and many others) bought 2 Switches solely on the understanding I could share a game's digital licence between two Switches ... we only purchased/played online games together so now my son has 1 SWITCH and my daughter has 1 PAPERWEIGHT!! Scummy company!!! Bought EVERY Nintendo console ... I'm done now! Switch 2 .. NO THANKS!!!!

Re: Nintendo Announces 'Virtual Game Cards' For Switch, Unlocking Digital Lending

fluggy

@swoose Yup. Can do it on 2 Switches where the games buying account is on both systems. You just have to make sure your primarysecondary console settings are correct. You can do it on Xbox One/SeriesX and PS4/5 too. Ps4/PS5 is even better. When PS5 was released Playstation counted it as a new echo system (unlike Series X) so if you already shared games between two PS4s you could add a PS5 too meaning, with that configuration (2Ps4s + 1PS5) you can game share between 3 Playstations and play them all online at same time.

Re: Nintendo Announces 'Virtual Game Cards' For Switch, Unlocking Digital Lending

fluggy

Um ... maybe im simple but, I dont get it??? If your already know your personally going to play a game on a specific system, why would you need or want to install it on another system. The Switch is portable anyway. Its not like most people need a Switch for docked mode and a 2nd Switch to use as a portable. ... um ... I already share digital games between mine and my son's Switches? "Now you can play the game on the 2nd system whenever you want" ... how is this useful? ... you can already can do that on the your 1st Switch console? If youve got 2 Switches that play the same games, why would anyone think ... "I know, i'll play it on my 2nd Switch tomorrow ...just coz". Is this virtual gamecard thing because they are going to stop selling physical cards? "You can load and eject and organize games on your system"! I can already do that without the need to keep virtually "inserting" and "ejecting" them. I don't see how this benefits someone like me, who's games are all digital anyway, at all. Is this just a DRM ploy dressed up as an advantage but actually tightening up on account/gamesharing... are Ninty removing my ability to gameshare with my son ie, buy one game Splatoon 3 for eg, and be able to play it online simulataneously on 2 consoles which I already do. Something fishy here.

Re: ICYMI: Yes, Dungeons Return In The Legend Of Zelda: Echoes Of Wisdom

fluggy

It's all a bit ... Meh. Way too many echoes to juggle from the start. Constantly dipping in and out of the menu to use the echo at the end of the list gets tedious ... fast. I miss the good old unlock a cool ability and use it in the dungeon style. Echoes are varied enough but should unlock much slower... Not EVERY time u see a new item or enemy.

Re: Soapbox: Six Months Later, Tears Of The Kingdom's Sense Of Wonder Is Still Unmatched

fluggy

Story, quests, sidequests and especially the cutscenes were fantastic .... just way too many boring, post-game loose ends to tie up. 280+ hrs and ONLY 68%.... completed all quests/sidequests and armors/horse upgrades etc but, 999 korok seeds, sign post dude, 110 Frox kills, 200 caves etc ... think i'll pass. Would realistically take me another 250 hours to do all that .... UGH!! In comparison, I just 100%ed Spidey 2 at 39hrs and found it to be an almost perfect balance of quests/sidequests ... every collectable/mission/mini-game was just the right length to not get boring/monotonous.

Re: Talking Point: After Three Months, What's Your Zelda: TOTK Completion Percentage?

fluggy

275 hours+ and only 62% ... Ive done everything I care to. All quests/side quests/adventures, "Areas" discovered, all wells, full battery cells, all armour/horses fully upgraded, all shrines/lightroots, all BIG enemies, maps, sages wills, all Gerudo vehicle/schemas. Ive got "TOTK Undiscovered" app which says I need to kill tons more identical monsters like hinox and frox's, sign guys, Bubbul gems and Koroks ... I thought id want to 100% but the post-game is just too monotonous and boring. It would realistically take me another 250+ hours to do.... and thats with me already knowing the locations of everything left to do. There really was no need to have 900 Koroks/100 sign guys/82 frox's etc.... it just isnt fun and took the shine off of what was an absolutely beautiful game.

Re: Poll: What Review Score Would You Give Metroid Prime Remastered?

fluggy

Merely "good" for me. Never thought Metroid translated to 3D very well. Respawning enemies in 2D Metroid made sense. In 3D its very unnatural. Every time you enter/re-enter the same room, the same enemy, spawns from exactly the same hole in the ground, over and over. Good Trilogy but I prefer the 2D games and probably even Other M over the Prime Trilogy.

Re: Every Nintendo Switch Online Game Boy (Color) Game Ranked

fluggy

... so Tetris 8/10... Link's Awakening DX 10/10
1.Tetris
2. Link's Awakening. ???
Kids, if youve not played these games before and wondering the best order to try them out by rating... dont follow/trust NLife's order. In ALL of history, Tetris was NEVER rated anywhere near as good as Awakening!!?? Baffling!

Re: Talking Point: What Is The Most Frustrated You've Ever Been With A Video Game?

fluggy

Hollow Knight.. first few hours were almost unplayable due to awful control lag... switched v sync off and it fixed the issue. Water Temple... remember there was some room in the ceiling I didnt know was there. Playing Environmental Station Alpha just now and its a frustrating lil blighter. You can play for hours and hours and get nowhere ... speaking of which ... Returnal. Can grind levels for hours, die and lose EVERYTHING. GRRRRRR

Re: Review: F.I.S.T.: Forged In Shadow Torch - Frustratingly Close To Metroidvania Greatness

fluggy

Was a damn fine Mvania on PS5. Just the right balance of challenge and difficulty. This was right in the sweet spot for me. Looked and played amazing with some rewarding upgrades. I did have trouble with the combo training from the Master but only for the last two lessons... Felt like quite an accomplishment when I finally nailed it. 9.5 for me. Shame this port seems botched. Hopefully a few tweaks will fix it.

Re: Reggie Thought Metroid: Other M Would Be A 'Defining Moment' For The Franchise

fluggy

Loved Other M ... still do. It also received some VERY positive reviews when it was released. Played it again a couple of months ago in 4k on Dolphin emulator WITH nunchuk controller profile and it really plays well. The Nunchuk removes all problems people had with the controls and aiming with missiles is the same except its triggered by one of the Nunchuk buttons instead of just pointing on its own. They should really have officially released a Nunchuk patch for Other M. Makes it so much better. Great game.

Re: Rare's N64 Classic GoldenEye 007 Is No Longer "Banned" In Germany

fluggy

Na. Despite playing hundreds of hours of 4 player "Golden Gun" after work every night (usually till 5-6am), the N64 original hasnt aged well. The graphics, framerate and controls are dated relics from a console generation that has aged worse than any other. The XBLA version is absolutely stellar, refines it to perfection and more than makes up for the lack of the original on Switch etc. Not to mention the fact that Goldeneye runs really well on emulators, upscaled to 4K with dual analogue controls. An online multiplayer mode might just get me interested again though. Such a shame they couldnt get the Xbox remake out of licenceing limbo and into the marketplace. It woulda sold like hotcakes.

Re: Tormented Souls Arrives On Switch In Early 2022

fluggy

Brilliant game. As soon as the menu music chimes in with the familiar "explicit scenes of violence and gore" warning, you know your in for some Resi-Remake-Gamecube-esque action. It really does feel like its made by the same people and looks stunning on PC in 4K. One or two annoying puzzles (that are necessary to progress) with random solutions were the only downside for me.

Re: Mario Party Superstars Leaks Online Ahead Of Next Week's Official Launch

fluggy

What surprises me is that both Dread and Mario Party both work perfectly with SX OS. Other third party titles, from a few months ago, have been released that require firmware 12 which means they arent compatible with SX OS, yet Ninty's first party games still only require firmware 11 (ie SX OS compatible). Bit of an oversight, considering they made a point of suing Team Xecuter members yet their valuable first party franchises still havent been patched to make them SX OS incompatible.

Re: Random: Forget Dread, It's All About Metroid: Other M On Twitter Right Now

fluggy

Just seen theres an Other M Nunchuk patch for Dolphin Emulator. Downloading the controller profile just now. This would really elevate it to a 9.5 for me.
EDIT: Works great with Nunchuk. Obviously you don't get analogue movement (walking to running) as you run at one speed throughout but the controls work perfectly with Dolphin and Dolphinbar sensor. Upscaled to 4K too. All mod cons.

Re: Random: Forget Dread, It's All About Metroid: Other M On Twitter Right Now

fluggy

Loved Other M. So did most publications (at the time, at least). It's a bit like Skyward Sword. Everyone loved it at the time but seem embarrassed to admit it now for reasons I can't quite understand. It really needed the nunchuk though. Controls were the only downside for me. (except for the pixel hunt sections obviously) To this day I can't understand why a patch wasn't released to utilise the Nunchuk. U could still point to aim but have the benefits of the analogue stick for traversal.

Re: Soapbox: 10 Reasons Why Metroid Fusion Is The Best Game In The Series

fluggy

I only got into Metroid in 2009. Got Super Metroid for Snes in '95, started it many times and just couldn't get into it. Only ever played the first hour before you disvover the good abilities and could never see what the fuss was about. Then in 2009 I got it on Wiiware and vowed to stick with it this time. Wow. Absolutely stunning game and Ive replayed Super M once a year ever since. Also had the bonus of going straight to the 2 GBA titles and they were essential also. Really are great games. Super M is still the best in my opinion but I'd probably rate Fusion and Zero Mission the same. Really hard to pick between them.

Re: Site News: So, Where's Our Baldo Review?

fluggy

So thats why. Been looking for reviews since last week. Found it really odd/suspicious that none were posted. Played it for 10 mins. Looks gorgeous. Fell off a small slope. . . died. Was told to by an old bloke find cabbage patch ... I couldn't. Shouldve really waited till reviews were released before taking the plunge BUT the trailer and previews promised a georgeous Zelda-esque experience. I couldnt resist.

Re: Best Metroid Games Of All Time

fluggy

Prime series was overrated for me. I'm in the minority but I dont think Metroid translated into 3D that well at all. The backtracking with the exact same enemies respawning at the exact same places just didn't work in 3D and just wasn't that enjoyable to me. I did like the Prime series but each game was probably only an 7 or 8/10 for me. In fact ... My top 5 would all be 2D sidescrollers.
1. Super Metroid
2. Fusion
3. Zero Mission
4. Samus Returns 3DS
5. AM2R

I also actually really enjoyed Other M. Its seems to have suffered the same fate as Skyward Sword . . . great reviews at the time but now everyone's embarrassed to admit that they ever liked it at all.

Re: Talking Point: Which Game Stage Have You Replayed More Than Any Other?

fluggy

Tough question ... I used to replay Another Worlds' first stage quite a lot. Hadn't seen that blend of game and cinematics before. Mario World Donut Plains was on repeat back in the day because ... he had a frickin' cape and could stay airborne the entire level.
More recently its been VR titles ... Astro Bot Rescue Mission's Beachside Boogie always puts me in a good mood so replay that quite a lot. Also played Vader Immortal's Detention level quite a lot because ... getting interrogated by Lord Vader in VR never gets old. Even more recently played Hitman 3 VR's Sherlock Holmes-esque Dartmoor stage about 25 times. Oh .... and I mustve frequented Arkham VRs Batcave about 100 times.

Re: Review: Mario Golf: Super Rush - A Solid Swing, But Par For The Course

fluggy

Played a couple of 18 hole rounds of this last night. Didnt like the motion control swing mechanic and the game seemed identical to past entries, just as I suspected. It really is a series with nowhere left to go. . . similar to the Mario Tennis games. We've seen it all now. Maybe its time to retire the Mario Golf/Tennis franchises or at least give them a rest for 15 years. Its all a bit stale now.
