Update [Tue 5th Oct, 2021 05:30 BST]: Well, it seems more than just footage of Metroid Dread has been leaked online ahead of this week's launch. Here's a bit more information courtesy of the Nintendo dataminer OatlmealDome:
Original story [Sun 3rd Oct, 2021 08:05 BST]: It seems Metroid Dread is the latest victim of a "leak". According to social media and websites like ResetEra, footage of the game is now doing the rounds online.
We've had a look at certain parts of the internet ourselves and can also confirm this. On one page - featuring quite a lot of clips, there was footage at what's believed to be the "second" boss in the game.
In other words, if you're worried about any spoilers - you might want to refrain from searching or looking at anything related to Metroid Dread for the next five days until you get hold of your own copy.
The game is already in the hands of reviewers, and our Metroid Dread review will go live next week ahead of the official launch. Metroid Dread has been described as the conclusion to the original Metroid saga, so the story is expected to be very exciting.
"The first 2D Metroid game with a new story in 19 years is coming this year to Nintendo Switch. Metroid Dread is a direct sequel to 2002’s Metroid Fusion and concludes the five-part saga focusing on the strange, interconnected fates of bounty hunter Samus and the Metroids, which kicked off with the original Metroid for NES."
If we hear any other developments, we'll be sure to let you know.

Looking forward to this game so much. No spoilers for me though.
I mean, of course it has. People just can't help themselves.
I will never understand leaking a game less than a week before launch. The leaker posts anonymously, so it's not like they get "internet fame", and they just end up ruining surprises for everyone who hasn't played the game yet.
Metroid: Dread is one of those games that you'll be talking about for YEARS to come. It stands to be a pivotal moment in the series and will set the tone for what comes after. The excitement I have for this can't be described in words man I haven't felt this way since Metroid: Fusion!
Well, that certainly didn’t take long.
I wonder if Nintendo is going to sue the entirety of the internet eventually for all these leaks?
It can't be helped, Nintendo and other game companies have to ship games to retailers at least a week ahead of release, as it would be a logistical nightmare otherwise, and inevitably some retailers will sell or ship copies early, if you do not want spoilers, do not watch the videos, simple.
Wow there’s still footage left to be leaked? Seems like Nintendo’s already shown it all themselves.
People are weird… I won’t be looking at any.
I also have zero excitement for it, although I am getting it as Amazon made the only way to pre-order an OLED was as a Dread bundle.
Hopefully it’s good, I have totally enjoyed the rest of the series, this one just looks rather soulless, we’ll see, I can only be surprised 🙂
It’ll be my first ever 2D Metroid. Very much looking forward to it!

@BAN
Is this some kind of a running joke?
Game leaks are Dreadful.
Leakage of any kind really should be stopped.
That joke was Dreadful.
Can't wait to pick up my Special Edition.
Can’t be as bad as the time when Nintendo Life leaked the 3D Kirby game ahead of time.
@Radpal
Imagine creating an account on this website just to complain about Mercury Steam...
Can't be me 🤣
@Radpal
For the trillionth time, they are not letting Mercury Steam do it alone. Nintendo is aiding them in development. It's a joint operation. As for the article, I didn't check it out, no more spoilers for me.
So... I can start blocking Nintendolife and twitter again for a week. Good.
"Watch out for snakes."
Had no plans to buy this for a while.... Just realised it releases while im on holiday from work and my wife is abroad with her mother and sisters. Got to be a day 1 now.
Nintendo used tactile releasing... It was effective.
Well I'm going to stay off twitter and YouTube for the next week I am not going to be spoiled
@Cia With the way they handled Samus Returns, and with how lifeless the current footage looks, it’s no wonder that some people are taking pause with this game. Hopefully there’s a reviewer out there that will have some courage to say what they actually think about this thing. Seems like nobody is willing to say anything bad about it, cause if you do, people jump down your throat. Strange phenomenon.
I usually don't care for story in Nintendo games, but I wouldn't mind interesting story in this one.
@Matthew010 yeah, but knowing how many clicks it gets & knowing u were responsible for that is probably a narcissistic, self congratulating type reward, maybe? Same reasoning as leaks of early beta of games w NDAs, etc,, I'm sure.
I looked over the leaks, and it wasn't anything SUPER major. The boss that was leaked was one that Nintendo themselves have shown a lot. If you're following everything that Nintendo has put out about this game, there aren't many major spoilers.
EDIT: I no longer recommend looking at these leaks. The leaker has shared more gameplay that looks to be some pretty late-game stuff. I would probably stay away from it.
@BloodNinja lifeless? This is the 1st time I've heard criticism of the game. How would that type of game be anything but lifeless? Is there a Metroidvania that u don't consider lifeless?
@BloodNinja most reviewers do say what they think, it's just that you'll only want to believe the review that validates this baseless opinion of yours.
You're too ready to dislike this game no matter what reviews say, because that "trailer looks lifeless". That's shallow
@westman98
That is weird behaviour even by NL standards. @Radpal has 10 posts and 9 of them are moaning about Mercury Steam. Bizarre.
@Nourldean You’re proving my point. “Only say good things about Metroid Dread.” In this case, saying anything truthful makes one shallow, according to you.
@twztid13 Castlevania SOTN.
Aria of Sorrow/Harmony of Dissonance.
Super Metroid/Zero Mission.
Hollow Knight.
To name a few.
From all the footage that has been revealed so far, Dread looks lifeless. If this is the first time you’ve heard me say that, well, you must be new here. Welcome!
@BloodNinja judging a game based on a trailer, and saying reviewers lack courage for giving a game a positive review, when they likely genuinely enjoyed it, is an unhealthy and shallow thought process.
@BloodNinja
> Metroid Dread gets good review: "This reviewer is just a shill who caved to public pressure from Nintendo fans into giving this game a good review."
> Metroid Dread gets bad review: "Ha! This game got a bad review. You see, I told you this game would suck - glad this reviewer was courageous enough to point that out."
@BloodNinja
Doesn't look lifeless to me. I'm not sure what you mean about that.
only 5 days to go, I will play until my Switch melts in my hands!!!
@westman98 reeks of sock account methinks… 😀 almost like an imaginary friend.
@BloodNinja
What makes it "lifeless" in your eyes?
“ Metroid Dread Footage Has Leaked Online Ahead Of Next Week's Launch
Watch out for spoilers”
Or not post it on a news site! ☺️
So far no answer from @BloodNinja
@Matthew010 Or perhaps I'd like to see it since unfortunately I cannot afford it and now is just as good as later.
Gotta say the leaked footage looks quite underwhelming though.
I think Samus Returns looks and plays great 🤷🏻♂️
Some retailers seem to have shipped it super, super early. I've seen multiple local listings of on hand, sealed copies on both fb marketplace and mercari from people who had multiple copies.
@BloodNinja I'm not new, i just don't bother w the comment sections often. Hollow knight is my all time favorite Metroidvania, but it still only has a few enemies on screen at 1 time, so i guess i don't understand what u are comparing... The backgrounds maybe? Or the number of enemies on screen? Samus is going to the deserted planets w only local life forms, which is sort of baked into the story,,so I'm not sure how else they could do it, unless u are just wanting enemies like sundered or something attacking her. I honestly don't see much difference in the vids I've seen versus the memories i have from hollow knight, in terms of how many enemies u fight at a time, or the backgrounds moving around more. It seems to fit the narrative both games are going for, imo, so it works, but for ppl determined not to like something, they'll find a reason not to like it regardless, but I'm not sure if that's the case here, or I'm just misunderstanding what you think there should be more of, or consider "life" in the game.
@Scrubicius unless they posted the actual leaks, why wouldn't you want them to warn everyone?
@BloodNinja I hope you are right, lifeless, sterile, hollow and claustrophobic, those are the things that make a Metroid game Metroid.
I
Can't
Wait
!!!?!
@Murbs same here. My first time playing 2D Metroid other than a tiny bit of Super Metroid
@twztid13 see my comment above too, although I used ‘soulless’.
We’ll see in a few days 🙂
I love these perfectly timed “leaks”.
Anyone would think it was just clever marketing…
@datamonkey eh, what they showed wasn't really anything too major, aside from a few things that looked really cool. I don't think these leaks are going to persuade more people to buy this game, though.
@twztid13 ignore bloodninja he gets his info from a magic 8 ball.
@Scrubicius I’m at work, but I’m on a break, what do you need?
@The-Chosen-one The drab color scheme, the over-use of cut scenes, the dry Adam dialogue for padding, the forced stealth sequences with instant death failure, the re-used mechanics from other games. That yellow area looks pretty vibrant, but you can tell that they darkened the rest of the game to match the goofy color scheme for her suit, otherwise it might be hard to tell what’s going on.
@westman98 No. It’s going to get good reviews because as you can see from even simple comments, you aren’t allowed to say bad things about this game. So if someone plays the game and honestly dislikes it, they will still write a good review because they will be afraid of the backlash. You can’t even comment on the game without people clamoring at the keyboard with comebacks. You don’t see this too often in gaming, but here it is. Rabid fan base gotta be rabid.
@Nourldean I’ve seen A LOT more than just the trailer. Nintendo treehouse had lots of footage, more than enough to get the gist. There is other footage elsewhere which I have viewed as well, so no it’s not based off just a trailer, what a wild assumption on your part.
Again, you’re not allowed to say bad things about this game.
Oh and while I’m at it, Metroid Prime is an FPS. Now where is my eye roll, so I don’t have to read all these banal and inane comments...
@BAN Came her to say the same thing. It’s not like Nintendo and early reviewers didn’t publish enough footage of the gameplay themselves.
@BloodNinja
Thanks for proving my point and saying exactly what I'm mocking you for 🤣
@MichaelP I honestly have no idea. I don’t pay attention to much that other people say these days. I just know that they’re constantly releasing new trailers and videos of this game.
@twztid13 I was referring to the post on general… 😂
@westman98 Haters gotta hate. No saying bad things about Metroid Dread, apparently. Mock away, it says more about you than it does about me.
@RiasGremory At least it’s reliable information.
@BloodNinja
Thanks for proving my point and continuing to say exactly what I'm mocking you for 🤣
"Validate my opinion or you are a fraud" is not a good argument.
@electrolite77
It is strange indeed.
(There are plenty of folks here who have a hate-boner for GameFreak, but they certainly don't post exclusively about how GameFreak is ruining Pokemon.)
@westman98 Troll elsewhere. Why would I seek validation from someone who isn’t even important in my life? I'll say it again, you're not allowed to say bad things about Metroid Dread. The fanboys will childishly and relentlessly attempt to bat you down with tired, overused arguments that simply defy logic.
Unfortunately this seems to happen with most big games that come out these days. On the bright side, it's pretty easy to avoid as long as you're not actively seeking this info.
The worst is when YouTube's recommendation algorithm gives you video with a spoiler thumbnail.
@BloodNinja thats not true.
So hype for this! !
My only other wish is a Metroid movie . Omg Samus doing one arm pull ups would be glorious!!
I'm using a chrome extension to block/filter anything "Metroid" on YouTube and muted the same on Twitter. Downside is that you can't really block video thumbnails that has Metroid in it. Hoping I won't see any spoilers in the remaining days.
@RiasGremory No I checked, it's totally legit
@BloodNinja
I don't care what you think about Metroid Dread. You can call it the worst thing since Covid for all I care - your opinion is of no importance to me.
I take issue with your assessment that anyone who does have a positive opinion about the game is some hack fraud shill who is bending to Nintendo fanboy peer pressure.
@BloodNinja you have no facts to back up your claims so stop trolling.
@westman98 I didn't say that at all. I specifically said in post #50: "So if someone plays the game and honestly dislikes it, they will still write a good review because they will be afraid of the backlash." I know this to be true, because look at all the flack I'm taking just for speaking my mind honestly about the game. If some random user like me gets all this negativity from being honest, a games reviewer will be burned at the stake. You guys really need to get a life outside of simping for this Metroid game you love so much.
@RiasGremory Several people on this page alone are ganging up on me because I have an opinion differing than the norm. That's a fact, and it's backing up my claim that you aren't allowed to say bad things about this paltry offering of a Metroid game without having to answer to frothing fanboys.
@Matthew010 sometimes I feel like that is the point. How many people can they ruin it for and how much of a company’s marketing budget can they flush down the toilet. Or in the case of smash, alter the course of future franchises since Sakurai-san was not happy about the brawl leaks. That and some people are just gossips. That’s how they are wired and leaks are just the modern version of that.
@BloodNinja
So in other words, you believe anyone who wrote a positive opinion or review about the game is some hack fraud shill who is bending to Nintendo fanboy peer pressure (and doesn't actually like the game in reality).
Gotcha 👍
It's ironic seeing a Super Metroid fanboy complain about potential fanboys for an upcoming Metroid game. I don't think there is any problem with having criticisms of Metroid Dread, but there is a problem implying that if a reviewer enjoys the game they're not being genuine.
@BloodNinja
“ It’s going to get good reviews because as you can see from even simple comments, you aren’t allowed to say bad things about this game.”
Or it could get good reviews because it’s a good game. I’m not saying it will. I’m just saying that if it does that will be the reason.
@BloodNinja
Professional game reviewers don't care if they get backlash from their honest opinion. They're not gonna give the game a good score if it doesn't deserve it. Your stuff sounds almost like some conspiracy theory.
As for you, of course, you're allowed to state your opinion about the game. However, it doesn't have any validity before you've actually played it. Youtube videos are not the way to form a good opinion either, especially since the game has not even been released yet. If you play it through (or at least some hours) and still say it sucks or whatever in your opinion, then it's a valid opinion.
Here's a phrase from the Trusted reviews site hands-on for Metroid Dread:
"I’ve seen a few different trailers for Metroid Dread online (one from E3 and another from September’s Nintendo Direct), but I was never really blown away by the visuals. But seeing Metroid Dread running in person is a different story – it’s definitely one of the best-looking first-party games on Switch yet."
Dread sucks! Hate the melee counter! Hate that you can't use the d-pad to move!
Removed - flaming/arguing
@KennyRyan
Do you hate the game you haven't even played? Interesting.
@Ryu_Niiyama Put that way, you can definitely see why it happens, but I still see it as incredibly selfish and unnecessary
@Matthew010 oh I agree wholeheartedly.
Don't you mean this week's launch? lol
@BloodNinja If you go on IGN you can tell reviewers don't give a ***** what they give stuff. It always gives lower ratings that deserve higher or vice versa because they get people to review games that are outside of genre's that they usually play or like which is a mistake. People reviewing a game should not be people who don't generally play those genres because they're naturally not going to give them a high rating.
@Cia I’ve never played a game and thought it looked better than a trailer or prior gameplay footage. That stuff is almost always doctored. It’s almost always the other way around. If it’s a conspiracy theory, why is everyone jumping down my throat? It’s clear that you aren’t allowed to say bad things about this game. It has some mystical protection about it.
@Jokerwolf I’ve never read an IGN review and had it come across like the reviewer didn’t care about what they put out.
@electrolite77 If it gets a good review, that means the reviewer liked the game. There are plenty of well-reviewed games that have people who dislike said game. People just get unrealistically defensive if someone mentions it. It’s almost as if they are taking it as personal attacks. Must be a stressful way to live, being so sensitive.
@BloodNinja
Everyone is entitled to their opinion. I couldn’t care less whether you like it or not. However I also don’t believe that anyone who has a different opinion is lying or afraid of admitting it.
@electrolite77 You can't be that naïve, as to think that there are people who will hide their true intentions based on fear of public response. What about people with social anxiety? Or people that deeply care about what others think about them? They are impacted much more than you or I may be about what others think about them. If a person like that happens to also be a games reviewer, you don't think that thought would cross their mind? You don't think some reviewers try to protect their personal reputation? Please.
GameSpot sure doesn't care about fan backlash. They gave TLoU 2 and GoT a 8 and 7, respectively and diehard PlayStation fans are far more ruthless when comes to reviews of their exclusives. I think they also gave Days Gone like a 5 or something and I remember the comment section under that article was a war.
@BloodNinja Maybe it is you who has a different point of view. Most guys/reviewers I've seen talking about the game look ABSOLUTELY passionate about it. I don't think their excitement is faked at all...
@BloodNinja Everyone is "jumping down your throat" because this is one of those times in which you act irrational and not as educated and accessible as you think you are. Dude, when so many people are confronting you, chances are that the problem is with you.
Instead of thinking "they are attacking me because they are clearly fanboys!" Why don't you check their comments properly? Half of them are saying that you are entitled to your opinion, but yeah, it's clear that you don't like the game and you already have a bias against it so what's the point in coming to the discussion section of a game that you already know that you don't like? I'm also pretty sure that you expected people to discuss with you so you clearly wanted this who knows why and you'll probably do it in another article related to it. Yes, you are free to share your opinion but what's the point when you already did it several times other than starting something?
Just as there are fanboys, there are haters, and when you are already implying that if it gets good reviews it is because of a bias then it's clear that you already made up your mind about it and that you fall on that category.
All I'm gonna say is that you have a completely different attitude with some stuff that you don't like, and that you seem to have trouble respecting said stuff.
@ferroreo I never said that, what are you talking about?
@StarPoint
... looked over the leaks and it's not anything super major? It's not gameplay footage/spoilers we're talking about here. The ACTUAL GAME nsp/xci has been leaked and can be downloaded and played since last night.
@BloodNinja
The game does not have any mystical protection. The point is, it applies to any game. It doesn't make too much sense to give critique before you even played the game. It's not just Dread. It's any game. And for the second time, a professional reviewer doesn't care about his reputation. The best games I've played have gotten good reviews all around the board. And the bad games get bad reviews. Metacritic is the best source to check unless you were to imply every reviewer from every main site is biased.
It's still possible the game is not getting only good reviews. We'll just have to wait and see. I ain't gonna complain... unless the goddamn Slant magazine gives it 1 star or something. Now that's the authentic clickbait site.
I'm sure the fan project / hackers crew are super stoked they can already get their hands on this one.
I
Ahhh yes, people suck. I nearly forgot.
Here’s a question - when is it a leak and when is it just theft? I wonder if ‘leak’ applies better to say, spoilers, or information that perhaps was never intended to be sold. Secrets or things like this. But in this case if the entire game is suddenly out online, without permission of the creators or owners- you could argue that is just theft. I’m not taking a position on this - I’m just genuinely interested why it’s referred to as a leak.
Well, time to sign out of Youtube, mute Discord and delete Twitter. Been waiting for a sequel to Fusion for over a decade, I'm not gonna have someone spoil it for me.
@Nymos
Crazy to think it's been that long. I remember playing Fusion while taking a train from San Diego to Anaheim in 2003. Feels like two lifetimes ago.
I worked in distribution for a long time, not of video games, but of other products; mostly toys.
Street date breaks happen all he time, they're part of the business, and someone always leaks stuff online before launch.
Getting super upset about it wont stop it from happening and if anything, it shows the massive amount of interest in the product.
Yes leaked pirated versions of things can hurt sales, that goes without saying, but like thinking we could live in a world where this stuff doesn't happen is just fantasy.
@BloodNinja
Possibly, but it can go either way. Not necessarily in a way that makes your subjective opinion right.
You’ve decided that you don’t like it, which is fine. But for some reason you’ve gone down a weird rabbit hole where you’re right and anyone who likes it is lying or claiming they do out of fear. Put the spade down, stop digging, step back and have a think about that.
@fluggy not legally
@westman98 and your opinion is also of no importance
@BloodNinja don't be silly, of course you are allowed to say what you want about any game. the thing is, people are at you cuz you state you don't like this game since the tree house presentation and yet here we are 2 months latter, and you are the most active commenter on every Metroid article, talking about a game you're claiming to dislike. Now you are playing victim and it all comes to 2 things: you are looking for attention or you do care more about the game that you are willing to admit.
@fluggy oh, wow! That's pretty crazy
@StarPoint ..
Wow! Crazy? You think? That's just like...
mind-bending dude.
@fluggy ?
@Pigeon
If your brain is too damaged to understand what a "professional reviewer" means, it's not my problem. Of course, they are just people, and some may think about their reputation concerning a number of things. But if they review games for the sole reason of "doing what others do", thinking about their reputation and not the impressions they got from the game, they are not professional in their own job. This probably went directly through your stupid skull, but I tried.
@electrolite77 Blatant over exaggeration, I would expect no less from the rabid user base.
@EriXz I’m active because I get dozens of replies that I need to swat down. People just HAVE to talk to me whenever I voice my opinions on Dread. The amount of wElL AcTuALLy I always receive is hilarious. You can’t say bad things about this game, and I’ve seen the same thing happen to other users.
@Cia People will see what they want to see, instead of what is actually right in front of them.
@Richardwebb I don’t know what international laws state, but in the US these types of things aren’t classified as theft, since there was no wrongful taking of an actual thing from a person. It’s usually some form of piracy and/or copy write infringement crime.
The people with a chip on their shoulder who clearly are out for Blood Ninja's... well, blood, are proving his point with every post lol.
@CovidBarbie
That's not what's happening though. Dude says that everyone who'll give a good review isn't genuine and makes it seem like only their opinion is right. You can't just spit on people and be surprised when you get reprimanded. Take your tin-foil hats off and understand that your opinions aren't more valid than anyone else's, even if your overblown egos make you think that.
I love this site and pretty much everything about it. However, I think this article shouldn't have been written. I think the only thing it accomplishes is that a few more people will illegally download the game. Its likely those people would find out about the leak elsewhere, but maybe not. I'm a metroid fan and this article is still the only place I've heard about this. I just wouldn't advertise that the whole game is now available online if you want to go find it.
I hope this doesn't come off as attacking anyone. I really do love this site and the people that make the content for us all. Cheers!
Just keep on proving Blood Ninja's point. Keep on doing it, we all know you can't help yourselves lol
It's interesting to me the part that it runs on a dedicated (propietary?) Engine, never thought mercury steam had the technical prowess to put together a game engine. Very interesting indeed
@johnvboy dude it's not just leaking early it's a f.. pirated copy of the game available in pirate websites
@BloodNinja
That guy who said reviewers say what they think, isn't considering the review may be just as shallow. Metroid Dread doesn't interest me to play, that is an immutable fact, a fact about the current me that will never cease to exist in this moment. It doesn't matter to me that this leaked.
Eh ill just watch a cute girl on twitch play it instead.
i don't know why people's first jump is "they are doing this to be evil!" and not "they are doing this so other people can play/see the game early like them," maybe it's a glass half full thing
@MRARCADEX,
And there will be many genuine copies circulating as well, that has been sold ahead of the street date.
Not sure why you had to swear in your post, I would have got your message either way.
@EriXz I believe BloodNinja said in another article that they were 'done' with Nintendo, yet here they are still commenting on unreleased Nintendo games many months later.
@CovidBarbie
@BloodNinja is the only one proving anyone’s point. But I’m bored of their attention seeking now.
@SpiritOfTheHero I really hope so. It’s been too long since we’ve had a Metroid.
Blood Ninja's point continues to be proven. The lack of self awareness around here is hilarious.
@CovidBarbie I love how you repeat over and over how their points are "proven" but you don't say why.
Ya'll just keep on proving Blood Ninja's point (that they've explained thoroughly), you love to see someone have their point validated again and again.
@CovidBarbie I love how you repeat over and over how their points are "proven" but you don't say why x2.
Ya'll just keep on proving Blood Ninja's point (that they've explained thoroughly), you love to see someone have their point validated again and again.
