Re: Talking Point: Do You Replay Games?

countzero

I play The Sims a lot (currently 4, but its been the same for me for all games starting with the first one). Trying mods and making my own custom content, even though I suck at it
But mostly I play it as a comfort game, because it can be very relaxing and I don't have to think too hard while playing. If I want a challenge I can also make my own rules on how to play.

I also replay a few nostalgic games from my childhood at least once a year, mainly old LucasArts adventures and Oddworld: Abe's Exoddus. Plus some more modern games like Limbo and Inside. But for most other games if I think "That game was fun. I should play it again" I play it for maybe an hour and then put it away again.

countzero

@Ralizah I think judging adventure games purely by play time is hard. Sometimes you get stuck on a puzzle for half an hour. Or you stop playing but still think about the game and have a "eureka moment" some time later.

On the other hand if you know what you have to do, because you have beaten it once already or because you use a guide, you can beat pretty much any adventure game from that era in 3-4 hours.

Re: Mini Review: Picross S6 - A Bold New Direction? A Fresh Take? Eat Your Picross, Son

countzero

Regarding innovation I liked what the Hatsune Miku Picross game was doing, even if the execution was a bit lacking. For example if you finish a row or column it automatically fills in the missing Xs. The downside is that you can't turn off that the game checks if the squares you placed are correct so one misplaced square means you have to restart entire puzzle if you want a three star rating.

Similarly, unlocking new songs with the stars you earn from puzzles was cool, but the fact that you had to go to the settings menu to actually change the background music was annoying.

Re: Restored Images Show Nintendo's Headquarters As They Existed In 1970

countzero

@earthinheritor "there would be no video game market now" That's a bit much. The video game crash mostly happened in the US, Europe was a lot more focused on games for home computers at the time and in Japan companies like Sega would still have tried to find a way to sell their arcade games to people for playing at home. But the video game market would probably look a lot different without Nintendo.

Re: Ubisoft "Very Happy" With Immortals Fenyx Rising, Developing For Switch Was A "Challenge"

countzero

I'm happy to hear that they are satisfied with the game. It's my favorite so far this year. It just refreshing to have a relatively big budget game that is colorful and funny instead of the usual dark and edgy.

@dux the first DLC was a bit lacking. The gameplay was fine but the story and humor weren't as good as the main game. I didn't even know that the second DLC was already out. It's completely separate like the first one, right?

Re: Feature: The Exquisite Liminality Of Zelda: Skyward Sword

countzero

@Classic603 I think the main issue is how I played it. I first played the Wii version on the WiiU and then a few months later Twilight Princess HD came out and I played it again. I finished it twice in one year, which means it can't be that bad, but I definitely had less fun the second time.

@screechums I don't agree that the motion controls added nothing to the game. I think the idea of having different ways of attacking with the sword was great, only the execution wasn't great. I'm curious about how the non motion controls will work in the remaster and if the motion controls are any better with a Joy Con.

Edit: PS: Being the "worst" 3D Zelda is still better than most games

Re: Feature: The Exquisite Liminality Of Zelda: Skyward Sword

countzero

@Controller-Drift I disagree. Skyward Sword has the best soundtrack (first time a full orchestra was used and not as minimalistic as Breath of the Wild), some of the best characters and great dungeons. My least favorite 3D Zelda is Twilight Princess. It looks drab and gray most of the time and gets a bit tedious after a while. The only reason I finished it was Midna. Also Zelda has practically nothing to do in the story. In Skyward Sword on this other hand she is an active part of the narrative.

Gameplay wise I have only two complaints.
1. There is way to much hand holding
2. The motion controls. While I had no huge issues with them, they weren't ideal and I can totally understand if someone is turned off the game by them.

Re: Poll: Rate Your Favourite Game Boy Advance Games

countzero

I only played the 2-3 games my sister had on her GBA and later the must plays (Minish Cap, Metroid Fusion and Zero Mission etc.) on emulators and Virtual Console.

One of my sister's games was a weird mix of Bomberman and Pokémon (I think it is called Bomberman Tournament and it isn't on the list). It was pretty good a sold 6 or 7/10.

Re: Random: Nintendo Has A Problem With Its Switch Joy-Con, And We're Not Talking About Drift

countzero

@Hero-of-WiiU
Yes! I rarely ever hear about that issue, but my launch day right Joy Con has now stopped working entirely. If I press a button to connect it wirelessly the LEDs blink for a few seconds and then nothing happens. If I connect it directly it shows up for a few seconds then disconnects again.

The same issue now happened for the first time with my second pair of Joycons I bought in 2018.

Re: Nintendo Gives Us A Look At The Switch Box Art For Zelda: Skyward Sword HD

countzero

Regarding the price I'll just copy my comment from a different thread :

Nintendo games releasing for full price and never going down is 50% Nintendo stubbornness and 50% supply and demand. If I look at the Top 20 best selling games in December for my region I see two PS-exclusives (Miles Morales at 13 and Last of Us 2 at 20) and 10(!) Nintendo exclusives. Half of them are over one year old, Mario Kart is on 2, Breath of the Wild on 16 and Odyssey on 19, despite selling for full price and beeing almost four years old. The rest are recently released multi platform games like AC Valhalla, Call of Duty and Cyberpunk.

That's the difference. Your typical AAA game sells really well for two or three months and then sales drop significantly and they go down in price. Nintendo games on the other hand keep selling well for months and years. Reducing the price would probably not significantly increase sales.

@Wavey84 while I agree with most of your complaints about the Joycons I never had the issue that I hit the right stick accidentally.

Wii pointer controls are superior in Mario Galaxy or other ports from Wii like World of Goo, but Skyward Sword never used them, even on the Wii you had to recenter from time to time.

Re: PSA: Turn Off The Music In Rock N Roll Racing If You Stream The Blizzard Arcade Collection Online

countzero

@AtlanteanMan I think there are two possibilities:

1. Licenses with no expiration date are more expensive and the publisher of the game just says "eh, it's fine, nobody will care about this game in ten years anyway" and goes for the cheaper option.

2. Music rights holders simply don't allow contracts without an expiration date. Even if it is just for one specific product.

Re: Platinum Seems To Have Explained Why It's So Quiet About Bayonetta 3

countzero

@Giancarlothomaz the Switch is four years old soon and is still selling extremely well. I don't expect a successor until 2023 or 2024. Holding a finished game back for that long doesn't make sense.

Breath of the Wild was an exception. When they finished development it was already clear that the WiiU was a failure. So holding it back for a year to have a system seller for the Switch made sense.

I think Bayonetta 3 was in very early stages of production when they announced it. A development time of three years is pretty standard for this kind of game, especially considering that Platinum games isn't that big and works on multiple projects at the same time. Nintendo will probably stick to their current tactic and show the game off in September and release it in October.

Re: Poll: What's The Best 2D Mario Game?

countzero

SMB 3 for me. While SMW also had themed worlds I feel like in SMB 3 they had a bigger impact on gameplay. I also loved the more wacky powerups like the frog suit or the boot.

My dream would be a remastered version. Not a remake like All Stars but something that looks and sounds exactly like the original but has all the limitations of the NES removed (like glitchy sprites, slowdowns, that weird inverted color line at the edge of the screen, the music cutting out when certain sounds are played etc.).

Re: A New Trailer For Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury Is Airing Later Today

countzero

@San_D I don't think I ever ran out of time in a regular level in 3D World. The levels are similar to 2D Mario games, relatively short, linear and much quicker paced than Odyssey.

If I remember correctly there are some levels were it starts you on a 30 second timer und you have to race to the end while collecting clocks to add a few extra seconds, but those only appear in the bonus world after you finished the main game.

Re: Turns Out Zelda: Breath Of The Wild's NPCs Share A Common Bond With The Humble Mii

countzero

@Mr-Fuggles777
"You could play the "story" in any order because it was almost non existent and consisted of 4 mini dungeons and a boss encounter."

I agree that the story was underdeveloped compared to other Zelda games. But it was at least a little bit more involved than that. It also had some great quest design.

I'm playing Cyberpunk at the moment and all I do in the open world is select a quest marker and then follow the yellow line on the mini map 90% of the time.

BotW on the other hand had several quest were you have to actually search the map for something. The prime example for me is the Master Sword. Nobody gave me a quest to look for it. I just talked to random NPCs who would say stuff like "I am searching for this legendary artifact but haven't found out were it is, yet" or "I heard there is an enchanted forest in the north" and piece together were to go from those clues. Another example are the hints for finding all the memories.

Re: Turns Out Zelda: Breath Of The Wild's NPCs Share A Common Bond With The Humble Mii

countzero

@Mr-Fuggles777 Oh, the "it has towers you have to climb, so it is exactly like all those Ubisoft games" argument. Haven't heard that one before

Tell me, which Ubisoft open world game let's you:

  • Climb almost any part of the game world
  • Use physics as an actual gameplay element instead of just for looks
  • Play the main story missions in any order and even skip most of them without hindering your progress

Just to name a few things.

Re: The Game Awards 2020 Will Feature '12 To 15' New Game Reveals, Geoff Keighley Confirms

countzero

@MS7000 Agreed, even though it wasn't all bad. I still play Animal Crossing around 3-4 times a week and while I wasn't impressed with Paper Mario when it came out, I recently went back to it and now I'm kind of loving it. I also plan on playing Age of Calamity whenever I'm finished with Cyberpunk 2077, unless Nintendo announces some amazing surprise for the beginning of next year.

Re: Nicalis Is Trying To Erase Free Versions Of Cave Story From The Internet

countzero

To be fair they don't seem to try to remove the actual game. You can still get it on cavestory.org. They explicitly mention that they had to remove some stuff due to a DMCA takedown. But the freeware version of the game itself is still there. I also found it on several tech websites and stuff.

They seem to only go against fan projects based on the freeware version, which is still bad, but at least a little justified, because "freeware" doesn't automatically mean "open source".

Re: You Can Now Visit Nintendo's Official Island In Animal Crossing: New Horizons

countzero

@nessisonett well, the new rules state that you can ask for permission if you want to do something that wouldn't be allowed normally.

So if Nintendo asks Nintendo for permission, they can do what they want. But maybe Nintendo won't give permission to Nintendo because Nintendo wants Nintendo to follow Nintendo's rules as well, to be a good example to others.

Re: Ubisoft's Immortals Fenyx Rising Was Born Out Of An Assassin's Creed Bug

countzero

@Jokerwolf to be fair I think Stadia is perfect for demos. Most of us already have a Google account because of Android or YouTube. This way you can just jump right into it and try it out.

I won't buy games on Stadia because I get frequent stuttering and slow downs (I tired Stadia Pro when it was free for a month). But if it is a free demo that takes me an hour or two to complete I can overlook these issues.

It also prevents some issues developers can have with demos, like people poking around the demo files to uncover stuff from the full game or even using them to get around the DRM (like what happend with Doom 2016).

Re: Ubisoft Reveals Its Post-Launch DLC For Immortals Fenyx Rising

countzero

@shazbot
"they're clearly devoting time and resources to ongoing dlc development pre-launch."

Of course they do. The game has probably been feature complete for months. All they are doing right now on the main game is optimizing and fixing bugs. The artists, level designers etc. aren't really involved in this so they can already start working on the next thing. If they aren't working on DLC they are probably moving to entirely different games that are in development right now.

Re: The Company Behind Control's Cloud Version Is Bringing More "Major" Titles To Switch

countzero

I played the Stadia Demo for Immortals Fenyx Rising on PC recently and it did stutter several times (and became unplayable when Chrome decided to download an update in the background).

With that experience I'm not sure I trust that Cloud games on the Switch run well on my connection, when the Switch is also the worst WiFi device I own in terms of speed and reception.

At least the problem with downloads in the background won't be an issue because the Switch stops everything even if you launch a game that has only optional multiplayer, like Animal Crossing.

Re: "Nintendo Isn't That Smart": Pachter Says Nintendo Should Scrap Switch And 'Only Have Switch Lite'

@Volmun

"Also tbh if it was done via a "amazon fire" stile stick.. i have doubts itd be anny good itd probably have letancy and then you know ppl like him would come out and say the same bs he has sed hear "ohh nintendos dumb thay suld just get rid of it" ... ugh... "

It could work. Aside from a pretty poor range I had no problems with playing games on the WiiU Gamepad. A Switch with a dongle would be the same in reverse. The only differences would be that it would have to stream in 1080p (or at least 720p) instead of the Gamepad's 480p, but that shouldn't be a problem with modern Wifi standards. It would probably need new hardware however, I think the WiiU had a dedicated WiFi chip just for the Gamepad connection.

That said, I think his whole reasoning is stupid. Nintendo would gain almost nothing from focusing on a handheld and as others have said, even if his estimate of "20% use the Switch in docked mode" was correct (which I highly doubt) that still would alienate a big part of the customer base.
