Immortals Fenyx Rising is now just weeks away from launching on Nintendo Switch, but we're still learning plenty of new, quirky facts about Ubisoft's next action-adventure title.
In an interview with Game Informer, game director Scott Phillips has revealed a cool little tidbit about Immortals Fenyx Rising's early development. As it happens, a bug found in Assassin's Creed Odyssey kickstarted the inspiration the team needed to get started on a new project:
"There was a bug at the time where you’d be sailing on your trireme and instead of having a normal human crew, you’d have a crew of cyclops. We knew that was wrong for Odyssey, but it also sparked this idea of, ‘Actually it would be quite cool if we can break those historical bonds and just go full force into mythology.'"
It's not a bug, it's a feature.
Recently, Ubisoft has also unveiled its post-launch DLC plans for the title – including details of its season pass – and also teased a collaboration with Cartoon Network's Adventure Time.
The game launches on Switch on 3rd December. Make sure to check out this gameplay footage if you missed it the first time.

Gotta admit, I'm quite interested in this game. Not at its standard price, that is way above my gaming budget anyway, but I'm looking forward to playing it eventually.
Nah, I don't buy it. They saw how well Breath Of The Wild did and wanted their own version to sell.
I kinda doubt it like jump, but if this is legitimate, that's kinda cool maybe.
I am not getting it at launch, but i guess only cause i am not ready to play a big game like this right now. Also its too expensive for me after just buying age of calamity. Maybe one day if it is that good. Onto the actual topic though: I think its really funny how sometimes the games come to happen
I don't like when games already have DLC unveiled before the game launch. I feel like it's something that should be included in the base game.
This bug seems more like the excuse they needed to make a BotW clone. And to be honest this game looks really interesting. I just hope it has its own identity and systems, so it feels more like an assassin's creed spin-off and less like a bad BotW clone.
I'll probably wait until I decide to buy a PS5 for this one. I'm not keen on buying multiplatform games on Switch because they are often optimised like crap.
What a happy accident.
I don't see why people think this is a BotW clone. Ubisoft is the king of open world adventure games, that's what literally all their series they actually give love to are.
@71nk0 I know, right! It feels as if they have taken out chunks of original product only to sell it later.
@HotGoomba___Rebrand @jump They never said they weren't heavily inspired from BotW. It's pretty clear they borrowed some aspects - but this is a simple explanation for why the leaned so heavily into Greek mythology, which BotW does not.
@Shambo Well with Ubisoft you're in luck! Wait a few months and you can get gold edition at 40
This just comes across to me as something in order to gain interest in the game before release, probably a complete lie or at best overly fabricated.
Lets face it the whole game idea comes from the marketing department.
I'll wait for the gold edition to go on sale.
Really interested in this. I might get it on a different system though. Depends on the Switch review and performance.
Tbh, this game looks pretty fun to me.
Breath of teh wilde clone ragh! 😁 On a serious note gonna wait for a all in one in the bargain bin in a couple of years maybe... Or not. Might forget about it.
Played the demo on Stadia (got stadia for free or else I would not have) and enjoyed it. Glad I have uplay+ cause I'll just play it on my pc until uplay+ comes to stadia
@jump Yeah, these sorts of stories are all marketing nonsense to get people to keep talking about the game, good or bad.
@ReikoMortis Same, Ubisoft hasn’t gotten any money from me since the first AC game, and that’s not changing!
It is an amazing game, the demo sold me on it and it is a shame it is not being advertised properly in lie of Assassins' creed.
@Jbuggydroid The demo is 100% free and requires no money. The sales are going to be bad for this game because Ubisoft has piss poor advertising management too which is a shame.
Oh I know the demo is free. I should clarify when I said I got stadia for free I was meaning the premiere edition or else I wouldn't have touched stadia at all.
Loved odyssey and def feel the vibes of that game here. I'll play the crap out of this game on uplay+ and may end up getting it on the switch since the game will support cross saves.
Also I have seen this game advertised more by Nintendo than anywhere else
@XBontendo Yup, that was even the case when they used a first party Nintendo IP in a crossover (Mario+Rabbids and that StarFox game that isn't StarFox), Mario+Rabbids being the one case where I didn't wait because I thought it would be handled the Nintendo way. I later picked up the physical Gold edition and sold my physical standard one, and that way paid less than if I would have simply bought the dlc.
Still hoping for a sequel... And I know what I'll be replaying soon, now that I think about it.
@jump
Minus the glider, which incentivizes vertical exploration, the open-world climbing mechanics used in BOTW are definitely present in AC Origins, which came out like five months earlier.
@Res462 Ubisoft have been following this format for years and just adopted the Farcry openworld gameplay into the AC franchise with Origins. If anything BotW took more from the ubisoft model (large open world sandbox and towers opening up the map etc) than the other way around.
Its just a shame to see a stamina bar like Botawin an Ubisoft game, I like the freedom of being to climb wherever I want without having to be limited by a game mechanic.
Well lots of people like Zelda (and mythology) from a young age - seems like a good combo.
I probably will get it at some point, but I'm not particularly hyped for it. Maybe in a sale...one day
Why am I not surprised? 😏
@Shambo I loved Mario + Rabbids. What a gem
@Jokerwolf There's a demo on Switch? Or is it only on other systems?
@Tempestryke The demo is Stadia only for some stupid reason, but the demo on Stadia requires no money as some are suggesting I was able to play it for free and it was a very enjoyable experience. It is just poor planning/marketing on Ubisoft's part but I would strongly recommend trying the demo even if you are only a tiny bit interested on Stadia, it even will run on a phone or tablet as long as you have a bluetooth controller.
I've thought from the beginning that this game looks like "budget Assassin's Creed, with colors" - and it sounds like that really is precisely how they created it. Shame, because I want it to be cool.....but it just feels like a mod for AC from what we've seen.
Hmm interesting. I always assumed that Immortals was the game they wanted to make but got stuck with AC. Interesting to know that AC breaking gave them a new idea. Odyssey is my last AC so I am looking forward to a game that has the open world positives with none the AC baggage.
@link3710 They also made some great Rayman platformers and an excellent RPG called "Child of Light," so no not literally are all of Ubisoft's best games open world adventure games.
@Jokerwolf Thank you Joker.
@BulbasaurusRex true
@link3710 lol @ kings of open world games.
Just because the majority of games they make is open world, doesn't mean they're good open worlds.
For one, they all work pretty much the same, regardless of the franchise; and they're basically checklists where the important bits are already highlighted, and the rest is just useless, empty space.
@jump As long as this game doesn't have your weapon break after each hit like BotW did it I will give it a shot.
@link3710 I just finished the stadia demo for this game and I can assure you it is a Breath of the Wild clone.
“We played Breath of the Wild and thought, yeah, we could do that too.”
@Kejomo
It has just as many AC:Odyssey elements than BOTW elements. I would not consider it as a strait clone.
The combat system has so much more in common with AC:Odyssey. But for sure, there are also many parts that has been taken directly form BOTW.
Immortals Fenyx Rising just feels and plays like a great mix of Zelda: BOTW and AC: Odyssey, taking the best parts of both.
Also, It seems to be a more focused game and less open world than BOTW. Almost like a more classic Zelda game, witch isn't a bad thing in my opinion. I am looking forward to play it.
Finally Ubisoft got inspired by a Nintendo game, and that is a good thing. We have plenty of boring "realistic looking" games out there. I hope it's going to be great and sell well, so that we will see more titles like this from Ubisoft and other big publishers.
The art styles and settings in games like Immortals, Mario or Zelda, does give the developer more freedom to create interesting and over the top gameplay experiences. And in the end, this often leads to funnier, more enjoyable and creative games. That is what gaming is all about, in my opinion. This is why i love playing Nintendo games.
More "Realistic" looking games tends to get more repetitive in their gameplay to fast.
If anyone is still interested in playing the demo: It's available for free again on Stadia. You just need a Google / Gmail account:
https://stadia.google.com/game/immortals-fenyx-rising
Just grab a Switch Pro, PS4 or Xbox controller. Connect it to your PC/Mac and open a Chrome or Edge browser. And you can start right away with the stream. No Downloads or huge hardware requirements needed. Just a good internet connection and enjoy
Ubisoft - is a Bug company, never played any game without bugs haha. But even with the bugs, they make beautiful games. I am a big fan of Ghost recon breakpoint even tho it can do better i give it a 8/10. Asassin Creed blackflag is my favorite asassin creed game.
Watchdogs is the most boring ubi game i have played, so wont touch it again.
So will wait for reviews, for this game.
A decade ago Ubisoft and Capcom also released games that were heavily Inspired by Zelda games:
"Beyond Good and Evil" and "Okami".
Both were fantastic tittles and critical acclaimed, but they were also finically disasters. They did not sell well.
I do not hope that Immortals Fenyx Rising will suffer the same fate. It looks so good.
Clone or not. If people enjoy these kinds of games, and want more of them, they should also support them!
So an insect in an Assassin's Creed game gave birth to immortal gods and a phoenix?
Well, that's good. I like what I've played from the Assassin's Creed series, but its great to get a new IP and a break from AC. Ubisoft has leaned too heavily on AC and Tom Clancy games, always nice to see something fresh.
The demo on Stadia is excellent and may be the first full game purchase I make on that service over Switch.
@dres Hm... Well, Okami got a DS sequel, an HD remaster, and there's talk of a sequel that seems quite hopeful. Here's to hoping.
I don't know about Beyond Good & Evil, because I never played it, but with Okami, I think it's sad that people would write it off as just a Zelda clone. It's so much more. Namely it has its own setting, style, and even fighting mechanics.
With this game right here, I can see people thinking it is piggy-backing off of BOTW in a way that Okami never did. There are a number of games that are doing this. Nevertheless, I don't think they should automatically be written off, either.
And with this game, as I've said before, I've played Odyssey and loved it. This team knows how to make a good game, and they know how to make a good open world game. Even if it is graphically similar to BOTW, I'm sure it will be something great in of itself. Perhaps not on the level of Okami, but I'm not holding it to that high of standards. Lol
I'm just here to give props to the writer who cleverly fit "Life finds a way" (JP) and "It's not a bug, it's a feature" (ACV) into this article. Nicely done 👍
@clvr kings meaning that's all they make, not that they're any good at it.
@BulbasaurusRex I know, I've played both. Doesn't change the fact that they basically ignore those IPs.
@Jokerwolf to be fair I think Stadia is perfect for demos. Most of us already have a Google account because of Android or YouTube. This way you can just jump right into it and try it out.
I won't buy games on Stadia because I get frequent stuttering and slow downs (I tired Stadia Pro when it was free for a month). But if it is a free demo that takes me an hour or two to complete I can overlook these issues.
It also prevents some issues developers can have with demos, like people poking around the demo files to uncover stuff from the full game or even using them to get around the DRM (like what happend with Doom 2016).
insert salty nintendo fan complaining about how this is just a copy of breath if the wild comment
@jump Of course, you'd know all about what inspired the devs to make this game
You'd think the dev team would know what inspired them, but nope, Jump from Nintendolife's comment section knows what's up
Thank you for enlightening us with your expert knowledge on Ubisoft, the development process of this game, and the inspiration behind this game. I'm so glad that we have people like you, a random citizen, to give us the TRUTH on what inspires developers to make games. The developers themselves don't know what they're talking about, what do they know? They're only the people that make the game.
@LilMuku you're very welcome.
@countzero It is a big failure though in general I think as far as marketing, most people want nothing to do with stadia and I cannot blame them.
@link3710 I'm pretty sure that's not what king means, and I'm not even a native.
We understood each other in the end though, that's all that counts 👍🏻
And my interest in this just vanished!
@Lord So the game is different to you because of what inspired it
Well that makes no sense
A lot of comparisons to BOTW in the comments section but this game reminds me more of Kid Icarus Uprising. Well, what I've seen of KIU anyway. I never actually played it.
Looks awesome. Can't wait. Been really enjoying age of Calamity for now though.
@link3710 That's different than saying they don't put any love into the series themselves. They put a lot of love into the games they did make.
Still waiting for a review. It looks so good though. May wait awhile after Christmas since I'm usually busier this time of year.
@jump Breath of the Wild, wishes it had the scope of this game.
