Last December, Epic Games began to add iconic video game mascots to its free-to-play battle royale multiplayer Fortnite.
First, there was PlayStation's God of War Kratos, and this was followed by the arrival of Master Chief from the Halo series. At the time, it had Switch players wondering if a Nintendo representative might show up, and this led to speculation the bounty hunter Samus Aran from the Metroid series would join the party.
While this didn't happen in the end, it seems quite the discovery has now been made within an Epic Games 2020 quarterly business review (extensively focused on Fortnite), which has now become publically accessible as part of the ongoing Epic v. Apple trial.
Following images of Kratos and Master Chief is what appears to be fan art of Samus from the Metroid series. This is followed up by a shot of the anime character Naruto and even movie characters like John McClane from Diehard and Snake Plissken, the star in Escape from New York.
As can be seen within this document, there are many characters that have and haven't been released in the game - so it's unclear at this stage whether or not these unannounced characters will also join the universe of Fortnite.
They could also potentially be character skins that were intended to be added to the game, but never got the green light from the owners of the respective IP, or maybe they still are on the way? If we hear anything else, we'll let you know. Would you be up for Samus in Fortnite? Leave a comment down below.
Fans: Give us Metroid Prime 4!
Nintendo: Okay okay, here's a teaser trailer.
Nintendo: Here's Samus in Fortnite!
Please No, I'd have to go back and spend 30 dollars on something I'd never use
I can appreciate the straightforward answer: "It Will Either Release Or Not." Really hit the nail on the head with that one there.
Hahaha wow, Nintendo are famously tight when it comes to crossovers as well. Sort of. A scant few of us remember Little Mac in Fight Night and Mario characters in NBA Street.
Interesting given the rumours of Samus joining back from last year. I would definitely want to see a Nintendo rep at this point to really hit home how cross-platform play has been a godsend to gaming in general.
Inb4 people start talking about Fortnite joining Smash.
@ModdedInkling I demand default dancing taunts for all Smash characters.
@ModdedInkling Smash is joining Fortnite oh no
@ModdedInkling A lot of the third-parties in Smash have had some kind of crossover with Nintendo beforehand...albeit years prior in almost every instance
Just think it sets an interesting precedent for when crossovers of some note do happen - if Minecraft got a Mario mash-up pack on Nintendo systems before its eventual Smash inclusion, if Pac-Man appeared in the Mario Kart arcade games, if Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest crossed over with Mario in spinoffs...who's to say Nintendo wouldn't have their eyes on other properties and studios they've collaborated with, like the Mario costumes in Rayman (Ubisoft), Zelda content in Skyrim (Bethesda), or Bowser and DK in Skylanders (Activision Blizzard)?
Anyways I look forward to the day Rocket League gets a Smash character because of the Mario and Metroid cars 🙃
Weird tweet to make "there was going to be" is very assuming. Feels more like stating speculation as fact. It could as easily mean they just wanted it but never materialised in any way, as in nothing but said fan art.
I don't have any issue with Samus joining Fornite, but I honestly don't want a Fortnite rep to join Smash bros.
I don’t play this game, but you ain’t gonna talk about how the Rock, and Lebron James were in the document to? Just imagine going from playing a sport, to then killing bananas, and master chief with guns, cause yeah I did that last Tuesday.
Gotta be honest, this would be pretty cool. Eh, my opinions though.
I don’t see it as a bad thing, having Samus or Captain Falcon in Fortnite would prompt me to play the game more.
Though that artwork with Samus’ arm cannon on her left hand, instead of her right annoys me.
Fortnite already has so many video game characters (Aloy, Ryu, Masterchief, etc) so it was only a matter of time till Samus came. I wonder if this is hinting at Metroid Prime 4 or if it's just random.
I have lost my faith in humanity.
I don't care about Samus being in Fortnite or not, I care about Epic using fanart that has her gun on the wrong hand in their official documentation. Isn't a good sign.
I still think that Star Fox would be a far more fitting crossover considering the gameplay style and nature of the game Fortnite.
@AnnoyingFrenzy I think there would be the problem in general with Samus holding any guns. I wonder if they would have to remove the arm cannon or something to make it work.
Not sure how I'd feel if Samus joins Fortnite (a game I couldn't care less).
More exposure for the Metroid IP is always appreciated, though.
@NintendoJunkie Thats a good point. I guess they'd use Zero Suit Samus then? Her design would translate easier into Fortnite. That said, not the best choice for a rep since ZSS is barely in most Metroid games.
I absolutely despise anything relating to Fortnite, but this is exactly what Nintendo needs to do to break Smaus into the mainstream. Put her in that garbage game, release Trilogy HD for Switch, a 2D Metroid to tied us over, and then Metroid Prime 4 for Xmas. Multi-million sold, guaranteed.
I'd buy the skin in a heartbeat.
Nintendo should stick to their principles when it comes to being exposed like this and cut ties with these snakes but I know they're thirsting for Tencent so we’ll see…
I like how we live in this reality where a new 2D Metroid would be “tiding people over” but I guess that’s also the wacky logic Nintendo has they’d only make some half assed 2D Metroid rather than a gorgeous modern one while 3D Metroid lingers in development hell.
*****. If they do it, that's the only thing I'll buy in that game.
@SalvorHardin that's what annoys me, surely they could make a 2d Metroid fairly easily, hardly going to need the kind of budget that MP4 will have. Why not make one for the Switch? This series is so good that it spawned it's own genre but really we haven't had a new 2d one since Fusion!
The most likely scenario is that if Samus is going to appear in Fortnite in the first place, then they will save it until close to the launch of Metroid Prime 4. It's the same with the possible Metroid Prime Trilogy HD.
Fortnite has become a better celebration of gaming than the celebration of gaming.
That's not my Samus!
It has the same energy as the western SF2 cover art for SNES. Some artist or exec thought they knew better.
A simple "no Prime 4" would've been better.
On one hand I wouldn't want this if only because I don't want Nintendo stuff in Fortnite.
On the other hand this would be pretty good exposure to the Metroid franchise and hopefully keep it more properly alive and not fall into obscurity like certain other Nintendo franchises.
Oh this is awful...poor Samus
I think if it happens it'll be a 2 way deal. Samus comes to Fortnite meanwhile Jonesy comes to Smash Ultimate.
Interesting to see that the rumours from last year seem to have had some basis. Sounds like Samus was talked about but never made it far into development.
I’m not a Fortnite player but some of y’all really need to lighten up about it, btw. Nobody’s forcing you to play it.
Having Samus in Fortnite is the perfect advertisement for the franchise. Nintendo really has nothing to worry about with a crossover like this since they're just having the character on other systems.
This will never happen. Nintendo will not let anyone use their ip like that.
I suppose Nintendo need to find a way of using their Metroid IP... seeing as they appear have forgotten how to make Metroid games in a timely fashion.
If it were to happen it would have to be as part of a wider Metroid Anniversary celebration otherwise it would just feel cheap and aggravate people.
There have been cross overs with third party games in the past (e.g. Starlink, Skylanders) but they have been exclusive to Nintendo consoles even if the game itself was not. I can't really see Epic agreeing to that for Fortnite so I'm a bit sceptical that this will actually happen.
Just face it! Metroid doesn't exist, and it never has.
I imagine the skin would have a built in emote that lets you change between samus and zero suit
Are we sure the Twitter post didn't just use whatever image they wanted? And yeah, that fan art looks terrible...
I don't play Fortnite, not for me. But this would be cool for those that do. Hope it happens someday.
If Naruto actually happened, everyone would just Naruto run across the map together during a match.
If If Samus is going to be released in fortnite then that announcement should correspond with an announcement for a new Metroid game.
@Kyloctopus Nintendo would never allow it to happen unless the samus skin is exclusive to switch players and only switch players can see it in game
@stache13 samus in fortnite isn't happening, they most likely just had samus on the list as a potential skin but Nintendo said absolutely not
@Entrr_username Nintendo will never allow their IPs to be on other consoles or systems other than their own
@Grumblevolcano not happening, Nintendo will not allow their IPs on other consoles or systems
@Devlind it's not happening
@SalvorHardin Nintendo doesn't want anything to do with tensent because it's a Chinese company
@Chamver wrong, nothing is guaranteed in regards to sales, also, i highly doubt Nintendo even considers metroid to be a staple IP anymore
Nintendo would never allow samus to be in fortnite unless she's a switch exclusive and only other switch players can see the skin
@desireefan36 But they're not really doing that. They would only be putting their character in a game that just so happens to be playable on other systems
@Entrr_username Nintendo is extremely overprotective over all their IPs, they will never agree to allow any of their IPs to be in other games that are on other consoles
@stache13 Samus in Fortnite is the new Metroid game.
I'm all for more lesser known Nintendo Character crossovers. The more people that get exposed to and support Metroid, F-Zero, Mother, Star Fox, Kid Icarus, Wario, Little Mac, Waluigi, Luigi etc. the more likelihood Nintendo too supports said properties.
I'd even go further and say it's time Nintendo allowed for more trusted 3rd party development (with overall supervision) and handling using some of their IP's. Seeing as so many get neglected for too long and it seems they're either unwilling or incapable of satiating the consumer demands. Let it happen Nintie!
@desireefan36 ok well keep on believing that then.
I Wish Samus Was in Fortnite
She was (Kinda) The Master Chief of Nintendo
