@Rainz Movies are not games. Mario games can get away with thin storytelling because the gameplay itself is part of the narrative, but you can't directly translate that to something that's meant to be seen and not played, at least not without the underlying flaws becoming a lot more noticeable. Unless you were to somehow create a "choose your own adventure" (which sure as heck ain't happening for a movie meant to be seen by hundreds of people in a theater at once), the storytelling has to compensate. The Mario movie got the reviews it got because it kinda dropped the ball on that front.
@Clarice So you think COVID poses no danger for athletes, but do you think packing the stadiums with thousands of spectators wouldn't have posed a risk? Especially after what went down during the Euro cup, and with how Japan has lower vaccination rates than U.S and Europe at the moment?
@Zuljaras But the artist here didn't work for them. The lawsuit states they took images from a book she published in the 90s and used them without acquiring the proper license.
@JohnnyC They're building exact clones of this at the Universal Hollywood and Orlando parks, set to open 2023 and 2025(ish) respectively, so you won't have to go to Japan for long.
Right now it probably functions as an entry door for cast members (most theme parks tend to have those out in the open), but the DK expansion is inevitable unless COVID were to cripple the park that badly.
This is pretty significant IMO, regardless of one's feelings on cloud streaming. Resident Evil 7 and Assassin's Creed: Odyssey only really worked in Japan, so something that works in US/EU markets would open the door for more of these kinds of ports.
The tiny text was a big reason I put down X for a long time. Even on a 50 inch tv it was frustrating to read, especially when large chunks of the game do not feature voiceover.
I find it very annoying as well how so many of the examples in this post have huge negative spaces in their text boxes on top of the hard to read text. It isn't even very appealing from a graphic design standpoint.
@PickledKong64 Where are they dropping? Not in the U.S at least, and the death rates are spiking if anything. There's also yet no evidence that heat is slowing the virus down.
I think it's fair to suggest it was greenlit soon after Echoes's launch since Echoes sold fairly well. Then when remakes like Luigi's Mansion and Bowser's Inside Story started underperfoming they canned it.
@Lynas Marketing and distribution, even on digital platforms, cost money, plus Nicalis most likely financed some aspects like the physical version on Switch.
I'd like to point out that the Florida/Hollywood stuff are only rumors and the Japan report is the only concrete information about the projects as of yet, but the timelines do match up.
By an interesting coincidence I first noticed this when I was looking at satellite views of the Universal theme parks since I had heard a lot of rumors regarding the Nintendo projects there lately.
If I have to make an uneducated guess the relationship with EA going south is why Criterion wasn't approached again after Need For Speed Most Wanted was finished (as since EA owns Criterion they would likely need their approval before they make a game for another publisher).
@CB85 It sounds more like the prototype they would've made would be shown at E3 and then be developed into a full game, like what they did with Star Fox Zero.
Pretty much. The Jim Henson Company sold off the rights to the Muppets to Disney in 2004 but the company itself remains independent.
The puppet scenes were fun, but I found that while Iwata and Miyamoto voice the puppet versions of themselves, it was a bit distracting that Reggie didn't. Would've been more consistent if either all three were on board or they all had different voices. But that's just me nitpicking.
The idea of Mario Galaxy HD always felt like a waste of time to me (the original is perfectly playable on Wii U and can still be easily located in stores) and Nintendo'd be better off going ahead with a third game. At least Mario Sunshine HD, though I won't have it either way, would make more sense.
As a theme park nerd and a Nintendo fan I just squealed so hard. If there's anyone outside of Disney that can do Nintendo justice, it's definitely Universal.
I played it a bit on PC a while back. The art style reminded me of those flash games I used to play on Newgrounds years ago (there was this beat-em up I really liked starring a purple kid with a mask going around beating up other kids, I think it was called Dad & Me?)
Edit: Oh and Castle Crashers on Xbox Live Arcade, which was awesome. I'd like to see that game on Wii U.
The problem I see with the timing of this announcement is that their E3 2015 showing is going to get overshadowed by everyone trying to squeeze info about NX out of them.
But what'll be? Wii U sucessor? 3DS sucessor? Sucessor to both? A third (fourth?) pillar?
Maybe Itagaki would like to provide some new pictures/footage so we can actually see what he's been talking about lately? Not a slight against the game as I'm personally looking forward to it, but words only take you so far when we haven't seen anything since E3.
Since I live in Sweden I never had much use for Club Nintendo since it wasn't locally available, other than I would occasionally find pin cards in retail boxes for some reason (which helped me get Mewtwo from the UK site).
I guess all I really could hope for is that the new program is made available in Scandinavia.
The Unseen64 article mentions that the game was picked up by a "major publisher" in July 2011 and Pandora's Tower was already out in Japan by that point, so I kinda think it rules out Nintendo.
In order for me to have any hope in this project, one of two things must happen:
1. They get Phil Lord and Chris Miller, the duo behind Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs and Lego Movie to direct. If anyone can make a stupid idea awesome, it's them.
2. They get Rich Moore, the guy who directed Wreck-It-Ralph. He seems to know his way around video games and how to make them work on screen.
Also, Sony backs down from having too much creative control and let the director + Nintendo do their input.
Because who wants to actually go on 4chan and check? For your own safety/sanity it's best one avoids that site like the plague and get their info from third-party sources.
On-topic, collaborations like this are admittedly trickier to pull off than handing out a license to a third-party developer (like what Nintendo did with Hyrule Warriors) since there's bound to be creative conflicts and one studio being more protective of it's franchise than the other. If this rumor is true (and that's a big IF) then it'd be a shame, since it was one of the earlier announced Wii U titles I was very much looking forward to.
On the bright side it would allow IS to go back developing a mainline Fire Emblem instead.
I haven't encountered it, but I've barely been able to go online anyway due to constant 118-0513 (it can't be a firewall issue since it actually ends up working if you wait long enough) so maybe my system is trying to save me from this bug?

Re: Capcom Facing $12 Million Lawsuit For Allegedly Using Artist's Photos Without Permission
@Ooyah At the same time, given how well the games infringing on her copyright have sold, $12 million may just be a drop in the bucket.
(Plus, the legal fees for a case like this are probably going to be humongous, so better cover your ground)
