Wow, so BOTW will basically be a trilogy when all is said and done. I enjoyed HW:DE but I'm on the fence on this one, I may grab it later down the line if it isn't too similar to the previous one.
@timp29 I'm not raging on a keyboard, to be honest you seem to be heating up way more than I am. And well, it may be that nobody cares, but you seem to care well enough to reply.
I don't see the reason for all this animosity: I left my take on the whole rumor thing, you were free and welcome to ignore it just like I could ignore this article, so don't put yourself on a pedestal.
By the way there was never ill-will on my part, have a good one 👍🏻
@timp29 have you skipped reading comprehension class perhaps?
"I hope that if it doesn't happen, a lot of others will follow me in leaving this site for good."
And no, it hinges on the fact that this site has stopped putting out actual quality content a very long time ago, and doesn't look like it's going to rebound any time soon.
I agree that those games were never the pinnacle of GC performance, but I'd say they still hold up nicely next to the very best the GC had to offer (Metroid Prime, SM Sunshine, the Zeldas, etc.), compared to Swoosh vs Odyssey, BOTW, Luigi's Mansion 3, etc..
And that is especially true if you take the animations in consideration: it's true that there were a lot fewer Pokémon to animate, but that quality has never been replicated in any other Pokémon game, as far as I know.
Edit: oh and btw, if you haven't read all the discussion it might not be clear, but the point I was trying to make with @doctorhino is: how can you call the GC games "atrocities" when they comparatively hold up much better, taking into account both the hardware and other games running on the same hardware?
It sounds to me like he's made up his mind already and decided to discard the GC games just because they're spinoffs, while at the same time elevating GF's work to unreasonable heights.
@Cool_Squirtle 100% agreed. I'd really like to see these new clones create a style of their own, like Digimon and Shin Megami Tensei, for example. I mean, if they don't they're bound to be seen as "oh, you mean that Pokémon clone?" and little more. A shame.
It seems to me that the concept of context eludes you. It's not hard to understand that a good looking GC game and a good looking Switch games are different things, with different standards. I might've been clearer in my explanation, that's for sure, but it's really not that hard to understand: the GC games look incredible compared to Swoosh when taking into account the hardware they run on, as succintly explained here: "the fact that for you Swoosh needs to actually look worse than 15 year old GC games says it all: your standards are incredibly low."
If it's acceptable to you that Swoosh look marginally better (from a technological standpoint, what with being HD etc.) than 15 year old GC games, well, I don't know what to tell you, you probably would've settled for BOTW being in the Twilight Princess engine then.
"You're not even focused enough on being objective to have a reasonable argument."
Says the guy who dodged the overwhelming majority of points I made in the previous wall of text.
Also, you're the one suggesting Game Freak are incapable of making a subpar game, even when the evidence is right in front of you: at this point, you're simply blinded by your love for the brand, so don't speak to me about objectivity, please. I'll say it again: if you enjoy the game, great! It's just that I haven't seen you bring any objective argument to the table. I'm talking about the game, you're talking about me.
"find me a screen of Pokemon s/s that looks half that bad and we will talk."
1) Swoosh does look bad in a lot of areas, see the trees, the textures, many animations and the weather effects. Those look insanely bad for a 2019 game.
2) the fact that for you Swoosh needs to actually look worse than 15 year old GC games says it all: your standards are incredibly low. Compare it with games on the same hardware, not 2 gens prior.
3) you speak of objectivity but then treat Swoosh as the holy grail based on brand alone, as if big franchises have to be good just cause they're popular: that's the way fansites like this review things, and that's super biased.
4) the GC games were spin-offs developed by Genius Sonority, which speaks volumes about how good a job they did at the time shaking up the formula more than GF ever did, and/or how low the bar is for the Pokémon games made by the main devs.
5) "Game Freak are so clueless" Yes, my friend, they are. They're a bunch of handheld devs clearly in over their heads since Pokémon went 3D. It's so obvious that they've lost the reins of their own franchise, what with gen VI onward being misstep after misstep.
6) the fact that you have to consider Swoosh better than Colosseum and XD just because they're mainline games, even though they look like barely upscaled 3DS games with loads of pop-in not even the GC spewed out, is indicative of just how clueless and/or naïve you are. If you wanna go around judging games by name instead of content and quality, by all means go on, just don't try to convince people that's the way to go.
7) "so clueless they made a game worse than the one of the worst received Pokemon games and screw sales, the real fans know it."
Lol at "screw sales" and at "real fans". Screwing sales was never an option, every single Pokémon game has always sold gangbusters and will keep doing that, based on brand power alone. It's plainly demonstrated by the fact that this empty husk of a game sold 16+ or so million copies, more than objectively better games like Splatoon 2 for example.
And "real fans", dude, seriously? 😂 Speaking "real fans" just makes every argument look silly in any case, but in this case in particular what does that even mean? People who blindly gobble up whatever has their favorite brand plastered over?
If you enjoy Swoosh, great for you, I'm genuinely envious, I've enjoyed my fair share of mediocre games too; just don't try to convince people these are quality titles made with quality first and foremost in their minds, because it's painfully clear it's not.
@doctorhino sorry to burst your bubble, but those "GameCube atrocities" are still better-looking and more engaging to play than Swoosh.
They were more limited in scope, sure, but the fact that a non-Game Freak spin-off on 2001 hardware still looks better than Swoosh, both artistically and technologically, is simply unacceptable, especially for the largest media franchise.
@Not_Soos I can't speak for FF as I'm a total noob in that regard, but if you're looking to expand your JRPG catalog, by all means buy Ocropath Traveler. It's aesthetically amazing, the music is incredible, and the mechanics are as tight as a drum. The only let down is the story and quests, which are pretty disjointed, but apart from that it's a very very good game.
@Dragonslacker1 nope, catering to everyone is catering to noone. It's usually best to have a clear direction and target audience and deliver a quality product, than a bland, shapeless blob of a game designed for the lowest common denominator.
@nessisonett yeah I get what you mean, sometimes a spark is enough if you're already heating up. It's happened to me time and time again, hence why I decided to count to ten before commenting instead of being caught up in my own frustrations, and I've reduced my interventions by a lot.
@nessisonett yeah but come on, you certainly sound part of the overzealous brigade looking to find supremacists everywhere if you stuff your mouth with terms like that.
I've seen you fight these battles many times in the past, and most of the time I'm by your side, but I'll admit you tend to sound overly fierce and victimized at times. Dude asked a question that could be interpreted in many ways, you jumped right on it and used the word Aryan...I mean, that's way more inflammatory than his comment, judging by the tone of those two comments.
I disagree with his take, don't get me wrong, but I don't think he expresses it in a way that warranted bringing up Aryans and the likes. I'm telling you this because that's the kind of remarks that risk putting you at a disadvantage even if people agree with you, because starting with unwarranted bellicosity automatically makes you the "bad guy", even if you're right in the substance.
Why in the world would you carbon copy stuff like the Normal type, which are so intrinsically tied to the Pokémon brand? And why do all these Pokémon clones do exactly that? And that goes for the Psychic type, being a 10-year-old spurred on by a professor, and everything in between.
@Mince "Third party exclusives just make me lose respect for the the developers."
It must be great not having to worry about how you're gonna pay the bills 👍🏻
@Henmii "so I know they said it's an XBox exclusive, but trust me, it's not"
It's starting to grate me how so many people on this site constantly doubt official statements and such and trick themselves (and others) into thinking that every game ever is coming to the Switch (even if it's exclusive to other platforms), or at least could be technically feasible, because of course the whole community is made up by the finest engineers in the whole damn world.
Stop being delusional.
Stop fooling yourself, and, most importantly, stop spreading misinformation.
You should've seen the salt on Push Square, all the fanboys were like "who even WANTS this game?!1! It looks like garbage, etc. etc.". It was so funny 😂
@ACNHislit lol, just take a look at the sales of games like Hollow Knight, Axiom Verge, Ori and the likes and then come back. Metroid doesn't sell gangbusters and never has, but to say Metroidvanias don't sell (especially nowadays) is just untrue.
@mantez You might not like it, but Prime 1 is one of the best 2D-to-3D conversions ever. It's actually mind-boggling how much they managed to keep intact and translate in a first person 3D game.
@Mushvision exactly. To be honest I prefer the EU version, the coins and flashes fit the style better than blood in my opinion. Of course, having both options would be ideal.
@KillerBOB IKR? I expected at least a couple of highlights from each year, otherwise what's the point? But of course, this being NL, we have to do the busywork and look them up ourselves.
As a SMT fan, I was overwhelmed with joy after waiting 3 whole years for an update on SMTV. That alone would've made it worth it for me, but SMT Nocturne HD really was the cherry on top.
So yeah, it was very good to me personally, but I appreciate that those who don't like SMT might not be that happy with this Direct.

@antdickens thanks! My mind isn't playing tricks on me then, lol It's weird because I don't think it read like an offensive remark, just a piece of criticism.
@Damo he was talking about Paper Mario, and only briefly mentioned the MP series. You (NL) have literally put words in his mouth with that headline, as the number 4 never appeared in there. And let's not even talk about the "newsworthiness" of this quote: he says it's always been like that in those series, so that's hardly news. If he had mentioned MP4, it would've been. I'm not saying that what he says will never apply to MP4, it probably will, but if you have to twist a quote to fit what you want it to say, that's clickbait. Case closed.
You and I both know that if the headline were about Paper Mario it would've raked in half the views and comments, just because everyone who sees MP4 at this point is gonna jump on that without hesitation.
At least be honest; I'm really tired of pointing out these things, hoping for a change, only for you to shut me (and others who complain) down. Try to be a little more self-critical: if people think you're putting out clickbait, even if it's a minority, maybe you should take that into consideration instead of totally dismissing it time and time again, even when we try to be constructive.
But hey, I'm just some random a-hole on the internet so I don't expect to be ever listened to.
@antdickens have any of you deleted my reply to you? If so, why? I just said I hoped you would keep your clickbait authors in check, since you're the boss here. I'm genuinely curious cause I might've not clicked the reply button by mistake, but I'm pretty sure I did. If I didn't, my bad.
@Damo you really have the gall to ask that? How in the world is an article titled around MP4, with no mention of it whatsoever in the quoted excerpt, not clickbait? I get that your super defensive about the site, but this is incontestable. I'm really tired of this site's shenanigans, I think I'll have to find another one soon enough.
@RazumikhinPG eh, seeing as things usually go down with these topics on NL, they shouldn't have opened it in the first place. But we all know how things go around here, let them rake in a hundred comments more and maybe they'll think about it.
@sandman89 totally agree!
I think that is pretty much the only glaring issue of the game, because the battle system is amazing, the graphics gorgeous, the music incredible, the level scaling fair and intuitive, the job system super fun, etc..
If they ever make a sequel (which I hope), I hope they have a more interconnected story, even though the whole 8 character thing is kind of a foundational gimmick, so I don't know how they should restructure the game around it.
That said, I'd gladly take a more linear sequel with set events if it offered a more compelling (and overarching) story.

@doctorhino so many wrong things in this comment:

Re: Series Producer Suggests Metroid Prime 4 'Won't Ignore Casual Players'
Re: Series Producer Suggests Metroid Prime 4 'Won't Ignore Casual Players'
@antdickens I hope you could reign in the clickbait your authors put out, instead.
Re: Game Director Swery Will Rewrite At Least One Scene In Deadly Premonition 2
@RazumikhinPG eh, seeing as things usually go down with these topics on NL, they shouldn't have opened it in the first place.
But we all know how things go around here, let them rake in a hundred comments more and maybe they'll think about it.
Re: Octopath Traveler Celebrates Its Second Anniversary With Some Adorable Artwork
@sandman89 totally agree!
