We already know that Shin Megami Tensei V – the next numbered entry in Atlus’ beloved Shin Megami Tensei series – is coming exclusively to Nintendo Switch, but we now also know that the third entry in the franchise is getting remastered for Nintendo's system.
Shin Megami Tensei III Nocturne HD Remaster is a remake of the game which launched 17 years ago as Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne on the PlayStation 2. It's a HD remake of the original and arrives on Switch in spring 2021 – the same year that we'll be getting the aforementioned Shin Megami Tensei V.
Shin Megami Tensei III Nocturne HD Remaster places you in the shoes of a Japanese high school student who is transformed into a half-demon after the world is ravaged by an apocalyptic event. Tokyo becomes a nightmarish "Vortex World" packed with demons and monsters, and the player character becomes wrapped up in a devilish scheme which will decide the fate of humanity. Turn-based combat is present as you might expect, and a demon recruitment system allows you to bring monsters over to your side and have them fight for you.
It has also been confirmed that Shin Megami Tensei V will receive a simultaneous global launch.

I've waited so long to hear about this!
Nocturne too!
Beautiful. You came through, Atlus.
The rest of the Direct was pretty meh, but these two SMT games are day 1 for me. Was hoping for a 2020 release though.
Edit: Wait... Take that "meh" back. Cadence getting a physical release is pretty nice too!
Yes, but the all important question must be asked.
Will it feature Dante, from Devil May Cry?
This and the SMTV trailer was worth staying up to midnight for.
Wonder if Atlus is ready to break the RPG stronghold from Square Enix and Namco Bandai? SMT would be a good start. I may get the new one since I've never played any of them.
@Quarth Honestly, this is now my favorite Direct of all time. I'm so excited. I rarely emote, but I literally screamed when I saw these announcements at the end.
I need fresh pants
This was easily the highlight of this whole thing for me. I regretted not buying the PS2 original when it was available for cheap, but I'm going to get this Day One. An awesome move by Atlus, definitely.
Both announcements caught me by surprise. Strange Journey Redux may be the only SMT game I've played, so both actually has me really happy.
Finally. The most important game to me.
The wait was painful but SMT3 remaster works as an apology.
Would've been nice to see some gameplay footage but I trust Atlus not to do anything too stupid.
SMT V will be great - if they continue what they did with IV and Apocalypse then I'll be happy. And the pre-rendered trailers/mobile game definitely point towards it looking quite nice as well
Nocturne HD is a fun bonus, but more for the longtime fans? I'll be happy replaying it with audio and resolution upgrades...but it's not aged as well as it's gameplay. Those PS2 Atlus games are product of their time, but I'm personally looking forward to both!
@RupeeClock I doubt it. I think I saw Raidou Kuzunoha in the trailer. He was in the original version, Dante was swapped in for the western release but it looks like their remastering the original Japanese release.
YES ! Nocturne AND SMT 5 in 2021 ! There was a lot of rumors of a remake of Cturne on some SMT fandom, I can't believe it came true
Atlus, considered me truly wooed
@Ralizah I'm glad for you, my friend.
Never tried this :3 is it like persona ?
It was a pretty decent direct for "Mini" & "Partners" and being 8 minutes long
it started pretty meh BUT MAN, THAT ENDING, SMT3 AND 5?!?!?!?!?! worth it.
I couldn't get into SMT IV when I tried it sadly. Maaaaaaybe I'll give the series another chance on the Switch.
I am very, VERY excited to finally play this! Hopefully Dante from Devil May Cry will be featured!
Props to the editor(s) of the Nintendo Direct Mini, they know how to save the best for last!
@RupeeClock ah, I see you're a man of culture as well
I enjoyed SMT IV and SMT IV: Apocalypse, so I'm pretty excited about this. I also heard Nocturne is the best one so I've wanted to try it for a while now.
Wonderful, I'm excited to play these.
Can finally get into the SMT series with this, although rest of the direct was not really anything worthwhile to me.
I'm so down for playing Lucifer's Call again it was the first Shin Megami Tensei game I got to play, I still have the Ps2 original.
Currently playing SMT IV so looking forward to these but I think SMT III is not the Atlus remaster people were hoping for.
"tHiS isNT pErSoNa 5 aTlUS yOu iDiOtS"
hahaha demi fiend go recarrrrrrrmmm
I'm so Happy that were getting a remake of this awesome game.
YEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!
FINALLY SOME SMTV NEWS!!!!!!!!
@progx if you have a 3DS lying around, by all means try out IV if you have a passing interest in this series!
It was my first SMT game and I think it's a perfect introduction.
@RupeeClock Dante from DMC2 🤣 Must be clarified as that silent schmuck is a shadow of the Dante we know and love.
So happy about this. Been waiting for more info on V for 4 years and now they double bubble a remaster in the news. Highlight of the direct by a country mile 😃
I am pleased to see the joyful response on this forum and on Reddit. I think I felt the collective burst of surprise and delight from the "faithful" as I watched. Happy for you guys and girls.
(EDIT: Considering the events of 2020 and the general tenor of Shin Megami Tensei, happiness at more is kind of entertaining, when you think about it...)
Shin megami tenses III AND V both coming 2021?
Talk about a Shin new year!
This rules! I’ve been waiting to see Atlus support the Switch half as well as they supported 3DS.
So excited! Definitely wasn't expecting SMT Nocturne news today
Nice lil showcase. Was pleasantly surprised.
I was happy until I saw the actual gameplay. What a low framerate...!! Disguisting
Im so happy right now.smt 5 is the reason i got a switch.
@Hobbesyall Yes and No. My understanding is that the SMT games are set in the same universe as persona. A lot of the combat mechanics, are the same or similar. However the story, at least in SMT IV, progresses in a more typical fashion and doesn't have the social story elements that the persona games have. The difficulty level is also a bit higher in my opinion.
All that said, who knows exactly what they'll do on SMT V. The switch has a lot more power than the 3DS after all, and it seems like JRPGs these days have started to adapt more modern gaming standards. Which in my opinion is a very good thing, and a long time coming.
@Grayjedi13 thank you, I loved persona 5, so maybe I’ll like this too
@MS7000 It's not based on the version with Dante unfortunately, the website says it's on the most recent version (Maniax Chronicle).
There will be some DLC...so we can still hope! But knowing Atlus it will be some extra music and maybe a costume.
Very nice, never did play this game.
@Kimyonaakuma Darn, I was hoping the meme would have a triumphant return. Nonetheless, I am genuinely excited to play this for the first time.
Man i just beat this game recently. If you arent a fan of smt or this game in particular i can see why you hated this direct, but for me personally it was incredibly left field and awesome to see this. Hard as nails but very much worth beating.
ATTENTION POKEMON FANS WHO DON'T KNOW ABOUT SHIN MEGAMI TENSEI! YOU WANT A REAL CHALLENGE WITH A BRANCHING STORY BASED ON YOUR CHOICES? Check out the series that pretty much STARTED the monster collecting genre. Pokemon popularized it, SMT had started it with Digital Devil Story:Megami Tensei which came out in 1987. Infact, Persona 5 is a SPIN OFF of SMT! Take a moment to think about that.
Of all the SMT game, this one is the only one that I was hoping getting the remastered treatment the most as it's the only main one not release on Nintendo's console at all and now I'm glad it's coming.
Havent played this , now i have the chance to enjoy a better version
I guess I can switch my Nocturne playthrough to this. Didnt get too far anyway.
Nice. I'll pick up 3 on PS4 and 5 on Switch.
Oh great.... I literally just started this on my PS2... 7 hours in and finally beat Matador...
@RupeeClock It will feature Raidou Kuzunoha from Devil Summoner series, like the original version of SMT III in Japan. I think
@Hobbesyall the battle mechanics are basically the same (you recruit demons, fuse them to make them stronger, battle opponents to level up) but the similarities end there. In SMT, you have no "dating sims" elements (no social link, no free time with extra activities like reading, sports, job etc). SMT games are also harder, and for the most part more "complicated": you have different endings, represented by Law (often, the angels and god) Chaos (often, the demons) and Neutral (often, your fellow humans). You get an ending depending on your choices during dialogues or quests.
Don't be fooled, as siding with "angels" is not necessarily good, and siding with "demons" is not necessarily bad either (it's more a question of what the player consider to be right or wrong). Also, I would suggest trying another SMT game, like SMT 4 if you have a 3ds, or watching some let's play: I know some people who loved Persona and couldn't get into SMT (too hard, too dark, too complicated of a plot, not colorful enough, no dating sims...) but it really is worth it !
Give it a try !
This was the surprise of the direct. As an rpg fan it made my day, but overall I don't think Nintendo should do these partner directs in the future
Finally! I bought my Switch mostly for SMT V. And SMT III HD Remaster is also good news. I loved to play it on my PS2 and I gonna play it again on my PS4.
I was hoping for this! But I really didn't expect them to do it.
I can't wait to start this game again, with its brutally difficult combat! The game that got me into SMT
This is how I felt when Demons Souls was announced for PS5. Glad you guys got SMT V finally!
@Darlinfan
Because I look at it as an rpg fan. For someone who got no interest in rpgs their was not much else.
We got dlc for cadance for hyrule & that shooter game. The last game out of this 5 game direct was an ad for battleground.
The average direct does have an lot of filler, but their usually is something for everyone
I like that they added voice to the game now which is a nice plus but do hope they add an option too have voice off as I feel like the no voice added the eeriness to the game.
Seeing that Raidou was in the trailer it mean that date won't be in it. Which I can understand as the licensing of it would have been an nightmare so they are just using the original Japanese version instead.
YYESSSSSSSSSSS
Interestingly Nocturne coming to PS4 as well. I get it as its a PS2 classic and there is a lot of Persona fans there but maybe this may hint SMTV is a timed exclusive?
SMT unlike Persona on Playstation is never a nintendo focused product with arguably SMT best years was on PS2 and SMT also has Xbox, PC and Mobile releases.
Interesting.
@Sakaixx the 3ds got SMT4 exclusively, and still is, so I doubt SMT5 is going to be multiplatform when it was originally revealed to be Switch exclusive in the first place. Same for the Nocturne remake with the PS5 on the horizon.
After playing this on my ps2 recently I cannot tell you how many times I muttered to myself, "I really wish this was on the Switch". I'm totally stoked for this. Now Atlus, just release all those other great ps2 games on the Switch and I won't bother you ever again. Promise.
@BenAV
if you didn't like SMT IV, you most likely won't like V and III HD
@xshinox Maybe. Been playing a lot more JRPGs in general recently with the Switch than I was back then so maybe I'll enjoy it more now. Managed to finish every Switch JRPG I've started so far except FFXII (which I hated).
@NightMiroir thank you, it seems to be right up my alley I have a 3ds yes, I will look it up
This is going to look so good in HD. Just fantastic art direction.
hopefully physical release
cough Persona cough
Wow, SMT III has been on the top of my wishlist for HD remasters on Switch. Dream come true for me!
Great little Direct here, for what it was. A new SMT game and a remaster, next year's looking great already. 😁
I’ve only just seen this. So so so so hyped!
I really enjoy the main SMT games over the Persona games (don't get me wrong, the persona games are fantastic too!). I think its the dark setting that you play in post-apocolyptic world and have to recruit demons.
fingerst crossed for Digital Devil Saga games. Those had some great voice acting cast!
Remember playing this game so much I couldn't level up anymore. Which somehow gave me basic attacks that did 10m damage. Never figured out how.
@RupeeClock Sadly this version of the game is based on the Japan-only release of Nocturne Maniax Chronicle Edition which replaced Dante for Raidou Kuzunoha from the SMT Devil Summoner series which is another Atlus series that is also stuck on PS2. Hopefully, if they see this selling well they may consider bringing that series over as well as Digital Devil Saga duology.
YESSSSSS!!!
I'll take an HD remaster of Nocturne any day, tho it does look pretty good still when ran on a emulator. The SMT series finally returning on console, and both Nocturne and SMTV being on the Switch? Best day ever for SMT fans.
Long live Shin Megami Tensei!
I'm happy for other fans that Nocturne is coming to Switch, but for as long as it takes me to finish an SMT game, there's no way I'm buying it. It took me three years a piece to finish IV and IVA, and Soul Hackers is kicking my butt. I'm definitely getting V, but I don't have time for more than that.
This announcement dominated the direct for me in my mind
This is just my opinion, but Nocturne is the best SMT. Also, SMT > Persona.
3 of those are day one
@RupeeClock I wonder if we'll get Bayonetta considering this appears to be a Nintendo exclusive.
@Sakaixx I'm inclined to disagree to an extent as the DS and 3DS era for the SMT series was FIRE! Soul Hackers, Shin Megami Tensei IV and IV Apocalypse, The Devil Survivor Series, Strange Journey! There were some AMAZING tiles on the DS and 3DS from that franchise. Though the PS2 had some amazing hits, but I believe they were mostly a financial disappointment excluding the Persona titles.
I feel Atlus likes the idea of Shin Megami Tensei being a mostly Nintendo thing and Persona being a Sony thing. I feel it fractures their fanbase, but it seems to have been their strategy for the past 15 years. Though based on recent surveys that could change with the presumed upcoming Persona 6, so maybe time will tell. As long as we can get some nice updated ports of the PS2 games if SMT III and SMTV do well I'm beyond happy! Maybe, with the recent Persona 5 boom people will be more inclined to check out SMT III and SMTV.
@Apportal no one cares bro let us be hype in peace
Now if we can get Shin Megami Tensei I, II, if, and the Persona series for the Switch.
@Saro Nocturne was PS2 only even though gamecube and later wii existed but now got remastered for both PS4 and Switch.
billions of PS4 3rd party exclusives gets multiplatform releases later like Disgaea, Atelier, and many others and vice versa is happening to nintendo exclusives like professor layton or ace attorney. Times changing and wont be surprised if later they announce PS/PC port. No reason for 3rd party to stay loyal when they can reach a wider demographics.
@Wexter I have to disagree. I personally think Atlus had to move to DS and 3DS due to how niche the series is and they cannot do bigger budget on Wii or PS3. The most successful SMT, SMT IV only sold 600k in 2-3 year in the market as announced by atlus.
The DS titles were fire but there is a reason why the PS2 SMT games were so highly regarded and some in the most loved jrpg list. I mean SMT Digital Devil Saga duology on PS2, now that is a good damn classic jrpg hidden gem everyone should play once in their life.
Took what felt like forever
@Sakaixx I can see that. But, at the same time, I don't think there has been a true Golden Era for SMT games because they have always been consistently brilliant. It's one of those strange franchises where even the disappointing titles are still exceptionally polished and solid JRPG fair. I actually love Strange Journey (and it's 3DS remake) and Soul Hackers which makes me feel like I'm in the minority sometimes. But, I can see your point. Maybe if SMTIII does well Atlus will be more inclined to bring out remasters of the other PS2-era games. We can only wait and find out.
@RPGamer and I count 8 comments of yours in seperate posts. I’ve done it before so I can’t really say anything, but it’s definitely not aloud. Trust me, I know 😂
@RPGamer
No surprise their with an username like yours.
@RPGamer
You have indeed being caught for the terrible crime of enjoying rpgs. You sentence is having to wait at least 6 more months to play SMT 5
SMT V AND Nocturne? I just hope ATLUS promotes them well.
