Re: UK Charts: Animal Crossing Stays Top With Mario Kart And Ring Fit Adventure Close Behind

ch37

Mario Kart success in the chart is usually linked to a fresh batch of Switch consoles hitting the UK. As per the last couple of lockdowns here demand for the Switch absolutely sky rockets.

As of right now the Switch is unavailable through key retailers (Amazon, Game, Currys PC World, Argos). Pretty incredible nearly 4 years after release! CEX are selling used consoles above RRP.

Been playing this with my 6 year old during lockdown and wow, what a game. We've defeated Ganon twice now (once before getting all the memories, once after) and reached 113 shrines completed yesterday.

Comfortably the greatest game I've ever played, and playing with a 6 year old is a delight as he tries things I would never, ever think of. It's a credit to the game design that 99% of the time, if he has an idea, the game will let him do it.

It does feel like hard work early on, but with the divine beast powers, master sword and some nice armor it's great to just explore everywhere, so many details hidden away.

He defated a white lynel on his own yesterday, he was running around the house for joy after!

Is there anything to stop Nintendo re-running many of these old Amiibos? Thousands of people are picking up games like BOTW for the first time at the moment but the actual range of available Amiibos is incredibly slim now.

It's potential profit that is going straight into the hands of scalpers and second hand sellers. My son desperately wanted the Zelda Guardian Amiibo but the cost is eye-watering now. I'm almost ashamed to say we bought a pack of cards on Amazon just to get hold of a few that we wanted to use in the game.

Put nearly 2 hours into this already, it's so good.

Finally won after an absurdly tense 20 minute round. Just two of us left for a good 5 minutes. I'm a terrible 2D Mario gamer, but there are tactics that work really well if you can literally just learn the basics of timing basic jumps.

Tips:

Start with a mushroom, don't waste coins on fire flower as you can get one almost immediately anyway.

Don't use the fire flower if you don't need it. Bop enemies instead and stack up as much time as possible. I can have 200-300 on the timer within a couple of levels now, which all but guarantees a top 3 finish even if you play it very safe from then on.

Don't rush through levels, there really isn't any benefit to doing so.

Never pass up on an opportunity to jump on an enemy. Having time in the bank makes everything so much easier.

You actually want enemies being thrown at you as much as possible, I don't entirely understand the logic but going with 'Attackers' seems to be the best for that.

It's undeniably cool, but space, flooring and cost will be massive factors in the success of this.

Our living room has space and we could afford it, but our living room is fully carpeted (fairly standard in the UK, at least) so this is a no go, sadly.

Re: Super Mario 3D All-Stars Buyers Left Upset At Amazon UK's Sneaky Pre-Order Tactics

ch37

Amazon UK (automatically?) link their prices to other well known retailers here in the UK. If Argos or Currys (for example) lower the price of something on their website, the Amazon UK price will instantaneously drop to the same price. That's certainly true of many games, toys and other products.

I'm guessing they have some sort of algorithm that sets certain thresholds, but there have been some pretty crazy prices because of that system in the past. My son wanted a particular Playmobil set for Christmas, somewhere like Smyths dropped their last few from £60 down to £15, Amazon UK immediately matched it.

Re: Switch Owner Claims To Have Taken Nintendo To Court Over Joy-Con Drift, And Won

Ours started drifting after 4 months (UK). Thankfully the repair service was quick (and free) and it came back as good as new.

I won't hesitate to go through the repair service if it starts to go again.

It is worth noting that this isn't exactly 'little guy takes on Nintendo and wins' as you might see for class actions in the US. Small claims really is just that, most companies will just pay up as it's cheaper than actually getting involved legally.

Re: The State Of The Switch eShop Is "Heartbreaking" Says No More Robots Boss

ch37

I make heavy use of the Wishlist feature to make it manageable, although announced games are really slow to get added (Hotshot Racing still isn't there, for example).

Even that doesn't always work though. Street Fighter 30th Anniversary has been on my wish list for ages. They dropped the price from £44.99 to £24.99 in the UK this week, but it's not a sale price, it's a permanent price drop, so it didn't flag up in any way.

Re: Nintendo Switch Sales Surpass 61 Million, Equalling The Mighty NES

ch37

And they still literally can't get consoles out quickly enough to meet demand. It's essentially been sold out (in terms of regularly finding units on sale in shops) in the UK since late December.

Stock arrives, stock goes. Same for Ring Fit Adventure, even Animal Crossing can be tricky to buy sometimes.

Re: Reminder: Use Your Switch Game Vouchers While You Still Can (North America)

ch37

@Benhop07 In the UK they are great if you're a digital gamer, in fact they are now the only way to get a discount on first party digital games since Nintendo withdrew codes from retailers like ShopTo.

For £168 I got Animal Crossing, Breath of the Wild, Super Smash Bros and Super Mario Maker 2, that would be £219.96 if purchased separately, so it was essentially like getting one game free (and lots of points, obviously)

Re: Nintendo Producer Says Working On LEGO Super Mario Was 'Taxing, But Fun'

ch37

It's a worry that Hidden Side is apparently being abandoned this summer, that doesn't exactly bode well for digital integration of Lego.

I can't help but feel this would have been far more successful (with both kids and AFOLs) if they had gone down the route of traditional minifigures and sets. A mix of sets, minifigure blind bags and some very cool AFOL sets (like the NES) just feels like a much better approach to this than what is essentially a gimmick with figures that cannot really be integrated into the masses of regular Lego that kids already have (I know for a fact my son would have built a minifig scale Mario Kart, had they released traditional minifigures).
