@ROBLOGNICK NL appear to have just copied the complaints of backers without fact checking it (takes all of 20 seconds to find and read the gov.uk page). Goods shipped from anywhere outside the EU are subject to the same fees. The fact that were sent to the US before being shipped to the UK makes no difference whatsoever, the same fees would have applied if Platinum had shipped direct from Japan.
@RazumikhinPG customs duties are calculated on value and can take into account many factors if the specific item does not have a specific cost attached (for example they should next use the value of identical or equivalent goods), there really is no wiggle room for sending it as a gift legally in these circumstances.
@Julien declaring it as a gift would be defrauding HMRC, and...fun fact...under customs law the importer (i.e. you) is legally responsible for the information declared.
None of this changes the fact that the NintendoLife article is factually incorrect. The fees have NOTHING to do with them shipping the goods to the US first.
Although the fine print wasn't there at first, Platinum Games are based in Japan so it stood to reason that items would be shipped from there. Anything sent into the UK from outside the EU is subject to legally enforceable customs fees.
That it subsequently came from the US makes no difference whatsoever, customs charges would have happened had they been sent from Japan.
This is a 'risk' with any Kickstarter, as unlike most e-commerce platforms, it's not always entirely clear where the goods will be physically shipped from.
Had no idea Splatoon 2 has sold that many copies. Feels odd that it's been 'dropped' (in terms of Splatfests) given that it continues to sell very well, sold more than Mario Kart 8 overall!
Two bought this year, Switch for my son and Switch Lite for me. Still wrestling with sharing digital games but other than that, loving it!
Stock is still hard to come by in the UK so those sales figures are impressive. It's never actually been regularly available this year, just waves of stock that arrive and then go within days. The likes of CEX are still marking up used consoles (£340 right now) due to demand.
@Porkfiend I think this is simply because most people have skimmed the article (which wasn't entirely clear, to be fair) and assumed this was really only an issue for the cards you could buy in GAME etc.
"Nintendo blocks third party digital sales in EU" would be a more accurate title for this article. It's a massive change that has happened with about 9 hours notice. It's very anti-competition.
@Mrnotultra this is not about the cards with codes on them, really. A huge percentage of people seemed to have missed that, this is actually a much bigger deal than the NintendoLife article implies.
Basically, first party digital games are now only available from the eShop. That means that overnight, if you want a digital copy of Animal Crossing it's £49.99 instead of the £39 it was available from suppliers such as ShopTo. 51 Worldwide Games? £8 increase overnight.
Nintendo have killed competition in the digital market with less than a days notice.
I'm confused, does this also apply to digital codes from the likes of CD Keys and ShopTo (i.e. that they email to you)?
If so that's kinda of a big deal, as they often have sales which make digital games significantly cheaper than aquiring them directly from the eShop (I bought an Animal Crossing code for £32, for example).
Has gaming changed drastically or something? I remember me and my friends playing Animal Crossing on the Gamecube for several years before we drifted away, not several months! The game has only been out 3 months and people are finding it stale?!
We've (me and my 5 year old) have been playing through some of the Lego games during lockdown and it's remarkable how many bugs and issues those games are full of. He was keen on Spongebob too but I'm a little apprehensive now.
Perhaps we were spoiled given our first games together were Yoshi's Crafted World, Luigi's Mansion 3 and Super Mario Odyssey, but the amount of times our Lego characters have got completely stuck in scenery or glitched through things has been pretty remarkable, also a good few full system crashes.
Would it really have not been beneficial financially to put a small team on this to at least offer some small, bespoke improvements? Seems crazy given the user base of the Switch now.
No reviews for Burnout anywhere yet? It would be interesting to know how it performs, even if I will inevitably wait until it's at least half price in a sale.
@Andgiles I think that's harsh, the whole point is to unearth games that don't get fancy press releases, review codes sent out etc. The community is a great resource, why not use it? NL still then need to play these games, write reviews etc.
Last week in the UK there were over 1000 games just in the 'current offers' section, that's insane and fundamentally a massive problem that Nintendo really haven't done enough to address. There are still no adequate tools for filtering/searching and not even a vague suggestion of how good a game might be (user ratings etc).
If I could have an Ironwood Dresser crop up in the normal course of play soon that would help. Seems to be a hugely common bottleneck for unlocking other items.
I decided to go all digital with the Switch, but now we have two users (me and my son) and a Switch Lite added into the mix, it's an absolute pain in the backside.
I still haven't got my head around the primary/secondary thing completely, but I do know I have to connect the Lite to my phone via wifi tethering every time I want to boot a game up when I'm away from home.
With regards to the article, there really isn't much to be saved (space or finance) from removing the card slot. If it was a bulky disc drive, sure, but it probably wouldn't be worth redesigning and having a separate line for a digital only model. Nintendo can't keep up with demand as it is.
Then hidden away as a bundle within Handsome is Legendary, which strangely is listed at £39.99 but immediately under that it says 'total if purchased individually: £34.99'.
@Zenszulu also content is often handled by completely different distributors in different territories who have more than likely paid for exclusivity in that region, so I completely understand why there is resistance to allowing video content to be a free for all globally.
With streaming services the differences are even more apparent. For example in the UK we have a few key services (Sky, Netflix, Amazon, Disney+), we don't have HBO, CBS, Hulu, Peacock etc, but most of that content still comes to the UK, it's just typically consolidated into our 4 main services.
We bought another Wii just before lockdown, it holds up really well. We bought a bunch of Lightgun games and a Nyko Perfect Shot, it's pretty much the last system that catered to that market.
Also, Endless Ocean. If the guys behind Abku could repurpose their engine/art for a real world diving game I'd be in heaven.
@WesEds rarely, and typically only as part of a major seasonal sale or event. 33% off is about a big a discount as you'll see for a major first party game.
I sold all my physical games and managed to convert to all digital with almost no financial penalty, but it did take a while to wait for some games to be discounted and a couple required the game vouchers to manage it (Zelda BoTW and Smash Bros is a great combo with the vouchers).
I know not everyone is fussed about design, but they could have at least made an effort rather than just pasting some horribly aligned text all over it!
I don't get how something like this is officially licenced, yet the beautiful (and functional) 8BitDo pads aren't.
@PretendWorking interesting, any official leads I can find as to what the data includes implies that digital sales from PSN, XBL and Steam from pretty much all major publishers began to be included from early 2019.
This article took longer to read than the entire Museum Day event! I was kinda expecting a little more. Presumably that's it now if you've done all 3 today and collected your awards?
@peanutbuttercup same here, first time I've popped in since it opened. Bit gutted to have to do it but there you go...
@link3710 considering the Switch has basically been sold out (or at the very least very hard to get) in the UK since the end of December, I'm not sure why or how it would be worthy of a 'worst territory' badge.
Ring Fit Adventure is like rocking horse poo here as well, Nintendo hardware has essentially been supply limited for the best part of 6 months now.
@sanderev they have no need to. They literally can't make Switch consoles fast enough as it is, the shortages in the UK have been since the end of December! Software sales are incredibly strong too.
It's a small but vocal group 'demanding' a Direct but really they have no pressing commercial or marketing need to do one until much later in the year.
@Archius9 there is always the relentless indie schedule to fall back on. Streets of Rage 4 and Lonely Mountains added to my collection in the last week, no idea when I'll get to play them!
@Nintendofan83 is the attach rate physical only? With the huge range of cheap eStore games I'd imagine the attach rate will actually be much, much higher.
Weird thing with the Nintendo system is, I think I'm right in saying I could change my name and avatar to exactly that of somebody in my friends group, and there would be no obvious way of the rest of our friends knowing which is which.
There is nothing easily viewable that is unique, even the friend code disappears once you've befriended somebody.
Fantastic work, just a shame social media was immediately full of...
"What about social carers?"
"What about postal delivery workers?"
"What about truck drivers?"
"What about supermarket workers?"
On a practical level opening it up to those with an NHS email address is much easier/quicker and less labour intensive than opening it up to any key worker and getting them to submit evidence of their job. You have to draw a line somewhere.

Re: Nintendo Scraps The Sale Of Digital Game Download Codes At European Retailers
@Heavyarms55 one example is 51 Worldwide Games. The digital code was £27 on ShopTo, it's £34 on the eShop.
For most first party titles it was slightly cheaper to buy from ShopTo (for example) than buying the 2 for £84 vouchers direct from Nintendo.
Re: Nintendo Scraps The Sale Of Digital Game Download Codes At European Retailers
@YonVonBlett indeed, I think a number of people have misunderstood what this means, it can't possibly be a good thing for the consumer.
As an example, ShopTo have a digital code for 51 Worldwide Games for £27 at the moment. As I understand it, that option will be gone tomorrow.

Re: Want A Complete LEGO Mario Set? Here's How Much Every Single Bundle Will Cost You
The total price is huge, but...
a) pre-ordering from Lego gets you the starter pack and one set.
b) you don't need all of them
c) they are - very unusually - releasing these all at once. There is comfortably 12-18 months of releases for a standard licenced line here.

@zemahon yep relative to PS4/XB games the size of Switch games is much smaller, so relatively speaking 256gb feels about right.
