Nintendo Direct presentations are always full of surprises, and one welcome surprise was the launch of The Long Dark, which is available to download right now.
The Long Dark is an exploration-survival game where players are left to explore a frozen wilderness in the aftermath of a geomagnetic disaster. The game's Story mode is said to offer "a chilling narrative", while those who're looking for hours and hours of permadeath gameplay can jump right into a Survival mode.
It all looks very easy on the eyes, doesn't it? Here are some screenshots and an official description:
Bright lights flare across the night sky. The wind rages outside the thin walls of your wooden cabin. A wolf howls in the distance. You look at the meager supplies in your pack, and wish for the days before the power mysteriously went out. How much longer will you survive?
Welcome to THE LONG DARK, the innovative exploration-survival experience Wired magazine calls "the pinnacle of an entire genre".
It's not one of the cheaper digital experiences on Switch, coming in at $34.99, but Nintendo doesn't usually opt to feature any games in its Nintendo Direct presentations that aren't up to scratch. It's performed very well on Steam with plenty of glowing user reviews under its belt.
If it isn't appearing on the eShop in your region just yet, don't worry, we're sure it'll pop up ready to download very soon indeed.
Will you be giving this one a go? Let us know with a comment.

Looks really cool, probably going to grab you it.
Oh snap, already forgot about that in the middle of all the other announcements.
Yeah I think I am down for that. Not too keen on the comic look, but sandbox permadeath mode sounds really good.
Hadn't heard about this one before (that I remember at least). Wasn't initially sold so had a bit of a look at reviews/opinions on other platforms and the reception seems a little mixed which isn't too convincing.
This was a pleasant surprise I'll definitely be picking up.
Normally, games priced higher on Switch would cause annoyance, but seeing as 70 dollar priced games are happening for the PS5 and people want to continue to use the “games are more expensive to make” excuse, it’s all fine
10% off on the UK store. Instant purchase for me, will be great playing in bed at night!
@ukaskew Great! Let us know how it runs.
Fantastic game. Its won a lot of awards over the last few years, and 26k rated it very positive on Steam. Imo one of the best survival experiences out there. If the ports up to snuff, I'll definitely double dip.
The character models and walking motion really remind me of Timesplitters. Are there any shared creators I wonder? Or is it just me...
Errrr yes please! This sure grabbed my attention.
Love a survival game so will probs grab this.
I bought a Switch 3 years ago for this.
Oooooohhhhh Yeeeesssss, I was waiting for ages for it !!!!!
I almost gave up hope on this game coming to the Switch! I have this on PC and love it to pieces!
This should be free to play.
This is a buy for me. Yes Nintendo yes.
@Meuz Why?
@bozz No idea.
Will probably get this. Seems like something I could get into
Definitely interested - but I need to know how good the port is - so there will be not impulse purchase on this one. And I'm not tolerating blurry visuals in portable mode anymore. So if it's not sharp visuals it's a no-buy.
Loving the aesthetics, but the gameplay might not be for me. Hoping for a review one of these days. :3
"How much longer will you survive?"
Dude, Zombi U's tagline is almost identical to this one, "How long will you survive?".
@brunojenso started on the story mode last night, looks lovely to my eyes but I'm not one to pick up on minor graphical flaws.
Headphones on, playing at night in bed and it's amazingly immersive, I can't imagine playing it on a PC after those first few hours.
@ukaskew Brilliant - thanks for the early opinion. BTW do you know if this is up-to-date with the content of the PC version? The eShop write up is a bit minimal and doesn't explicitly mentioned the Story mode that was added to PC later.
@brunojenso there is a story mode, don't have it to hand right now but I think there are 3 chapters with a further 2 that say 'coming soon'.
I've never played the PC version so don't know what the differences are.
@ukaskew Ok thanks
With bears in it.
Dead on arrival.
