Re: Switch Hardware Sales Reach 89 Million Despite Facing A Year-On-Year Slump

ch37

Q1 2020 was utterly unique and a perfect storm with global lockdowns and Animal Crossing being released. Even the price of second-hand Wii's were through the roof during that period!

I wouldn't read into the 'slump' for that reason, it's still an absolute juggernaut and it's still more than double the next strongest Q1.

Re: UK Charts: Zelda: Skyward Sword HD Settles For Second After A 74% Drop In Weekly Sales

ch37

@Okko they rarely drop in price later on, in fact in the UK the best deals on new Nintendo first party titles can be found at launch, the likes of Currys PC World usually come through with a good offer/voucher code shortly before release date.

If you're willing to sell it on at completion you can play most new Nintendo titles for free (or at the very least the cost of a cheap rental back in the day) if you buy wisely at launch.

Re: Soapbox: Indies Lead The Way But Nintendo Shows Progress Representing People Of Colour

@nessisonett that's an interesting point about Japan, the ethnic breakdown is in stark contrast to Europe, the US and so on (I think 98% of people in Japan are Japanese) so I think it's a given that Nintendo may be slower to react to these things than developers in other parts of the world.

I live in rural England and it's a similar situation on a much smaller scale specifically where I live, 99% of people here are 'White British', so I've had to consciously expose my young son to different cultures as much as possible, I know his school does too as it would otherwise be very easy to assume everyone and everywhere are just like his little bubble of the world.

Re: Random: A UK Company Is Inviting Customers To Smash Up Old Games Consoles

This is only frustrating because it is visible.

Fact is if there was a useful and commercially viable outlet for all this broken tech, there would already be a market for it. Recycling it down to base metals etc is likely the only realistic outcome.

Thousands of tons of working tech get thrown away every year, if members of the public arent paying to destroy this broken stuff, it would be happening behind closed doors anyhow.

Re: Review: Zombies Ate My Neighbors and Ghoul Patrol - A Classic That Deserves Better

Surely basic button remapping and the option for plain black borders is the absolute minimum you could expect of a repackaged old game, especially so when they've actually gone to the trouble of messing with those two things to begin with?

So lazy, and does absolutely nothing to pull in anyone who would otherwise just acquire this game (a far superior version of it, no less) for free elsewhere.

Re: E3's Just Days Away, Yet Nintendo's Being Oddly Quiet About Its Plans

ch37

@BongoBongo I saw some insisting it was Thursday/Friday last week, then others saying it couldn't be on a Friday because NoA close on Fridays (because scheduled YouTube videos and tweets aren't a thing?!), so would definitely be last Thursday.

Throw 2000 darts at a dart board and one will hit the bullseye.

They're still selling Switch consoles as soon as they can get them in shipping containers, they are still dominating software charts in many territories and their short notice shadow drops of content during the pandemic seem to have been positively received. 'Normal' marketing rules need not apply, and in any case, this is a fully digital event that is still 11-14 days away, why does anyone need more than 24hrs notice?

Re: Nintendo Wins $2.1 Million In Lawsuit Against ROM Website

ch37

A hell of a lot of old games are tied up with rights issues, even first-party games have this issue sometimes. It's not as simple as just saying 'release them already' unfortunately.

It's also 100% not Nintendo's fault if third parties won't release their content for whatever reason (somebody above was imploring Nintendo to use the money to release Square, Capcom and Konami titles, for example)

Re: LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga Has Been Delayed (Again)

ch37

@E_Gadds_Garage the Lego games are also consistently buggy as hell, especially when you start to stretch the mechanics of the game like any competent 6 year old would.

Lego Marvel Superheroes 2 on Switch has been one of the worst gaming experiences I've had for bugs.

Re: Dev Explains Why Nintendo Made Mario's Anniversary Games Limited-Time

ch37

The 'Limited Edition' tactic is also used in various industries, fine when there is an actual number, but it's basically meaningless most of the time.

I remember falling for it with the Men In Black DVD release. It was limited edition, I was young. On release date I ran to Woolworths on my lunch break to grab a copy before it ran out. It was still available everywhere 2 years later!

Another example, the Vauxhall Corsa 'Limited Edition' here in the UK. Nearly every model sold was an LE for months on end, it's simply a marketing tactic and a nice buzz word.

Re: UK Charts: Super Mario 3D All-Stars Bounces Back As March 31st Withdrawal Looms

ch37

@TheFullAndy which is why I find the tone of the weekly chart articles quite odd. Last week it all sounded a bit end of the world because Nintendo were not utterly dominating the chart and Animal Crossing had slipped.

When things are going so well that it's apparently news when a 1 year old and 4 year old game slip slightly down the top 10 highest selling games in the country, maybe it's time to step back and look at the bigger picture!

Even this week, how is a 20% drop for 3D World even worth a mention?! It's still number one, thinking about it in the wider context there were some very very good deals in the UK on 3D World that ended prior to the start of last week.

Re: Switch Shifted 1.5 Million Units In The UK Last Year, Matching Xbox And PlayStation Sales Combined

ch37

The Switch was generally out of stock for at least 6 of the 12 months in 2020 in the UK, just sporadic deliveries. I'm pretty sure CEX have been selling used consoles above RRP for much of the year.

Between late December and early February they were nearly impossible to get hold of, stock came back for a while, then lockdown happened and they went back to being massively in demand and that never really let up much through till Christmas.

Re: Nintendo Gives Us A Look At The Switch Box Art For Zelda: Skyward Sword HD

ch37

@Porky in the UK at least, they have to fix them free of charge for quite some time (years from purchase). We've had our Switch a year, our left joycon has been back twice for repairs. Completely free including free postage both ways, turn around is about 10 days.

Not ideal obviously, but joycons are a requirement for some games (Mario Party, Ring Fit Adventure etc).
