It's official, we're getting a 50-minute Nintendo Direct later today (UK time) and it'll be focused on games like Super Smash Bros. Ultimate along with titles coming to the hybrid system in the "first half" of 2021.
This year also happens to be The Legend of Zelda's 35th anniversary, so there are obviously expectations of some sort of news on that front. It seems hopes are already high - with "BOTW2" now trending on Twitter:
The last time we really heard about Breath of the Wild 2 was around 18 months ago during the surprise "first-look" announcement shown off at E3 2019. Since then, there have been no official updates.
If something about Zelda does pop up tomorrow, perhaps it might be as small as a standalone presentation announcement. What do you think, though? Reckon we'll get some BOTW2 news tomorrow? Share your own thoughts and theories down below.

As much as I want BOTW2 to get a trailer.. people are really just setting themselves up for disappointment. Just because Nintendo is known to sneak a few reveals for games coming up.. it doesn't mean that they will this time.
Yes please - the time is right for a BOTW2 trailer and release date!
Aonuma-san canβt let Sakurai-san have all the fun. π
I need botw 2 news. 'Here we go again' is perfect. Good job Mr. Doolan
I expect Genshin Impact Switch release date more than BOTW2 news.
Nintendo has historically teased holiday games in their early-year presentations, 2020 being the only exception:
2017: Super Mario Odyssey
2018: Super Smash Bros Ultimate
2019: Link's Awakening
I fully expect that trend to continue with this Direct, and BOTW2 makes sense as Nintendo's big holiday game with it being Zelda's 35th Anniversary and 4 years since BOTW released.
@ianl579 I mean, there's a possibility of the big holiday game being something completely different.
It might be a little too early for BOTW2, so I wouldn't....HOLD MY BREATH AHHAHAHAHAHAHA
Okay, I'll see myself out.

i actualy think this game will be at the E3. And not this direct. it will be the big christmas seller. I think the zelda collection will be shown tomorrow. we shall see.
I don't think we'll get news in this Direct. It just makes sense for there to be a dedicated Zelda Direct for the 35th anniversary.
That said, we are getting pretty far along. It's been almost two years since the initial announcement of BOTW2, so you just get the feeling it has to be coming sooner rather than later.
I suspect that if it's releasing this year then we'll find out in this Direct. I still have no idea if that'll be the case though. It's the 35th anniversary this year so it'd be nice timing for it but if it's still not ready then it's still not ready.
I'd usually be like "come on it's too early" but now that Jason Scherier is talking about it like it's a done deal I'm at the very least, intrigued
Safe to assume at least two of Pokemon Gen 4 remake, Bayonetta, Metroid Prime 4 or trilogy, and BOTW2 will have solid dates announced?
Hope we get some news on Windjammers 2, also.
Also feels like the new timing of directs are the week after major first party releases. Directs happens the week after the release of ACNH, Mario 3D All Stars, and Paper Mario, and now 3D Worlds.
All I want is a new Donkey Kong game with King K. Rool returning as the villain.
What does βlike Smashβ mean anyway?
Ah yes, the "quote a bunch of tweets" technique, essential to modern journalism needing to fill column inches, or whatever the equivalent online measurement is.
@MarinoKadame YES 100% IMPORTANT.
Genshin Impact has been out for a while and we still have ZERO updates on the switch version of the game. We have no idea when it will come. Same with BOTW 2.
but everyone, keep your expectations REAL low. I don't think we will see a BOTW 2 update but it might be saved for later. I personally want to see more zelda games announced in the Direct.
as @BloodNinja said , it is too early for BOTW 2 to come out. I think we will see an early 2022 release.
Nintendo might have something entirely different for this fall.
This might be a long shot but another Zelda remake would be great for holiday season
@anoyonmus Iβm hoping for at least Metroid Prime to get released. The whole trilogy would be great, but I would be happy with just the first one. Or a Zelda collection. Or Dark Souls 2. At the very least, I hope there isnβt news of another Smash fighter, that would be a waste of time!
NINJA APPROVED
Arlo is jinxing it again!! He needs to say "no BotW 2 news. I'm staking my entire reputation on the fact that there will be NO BotW 2 news." Then we'll see BotW 2.
@_Dan Yep.. means it won't happen if he says it has to happen. Just like how he said directs weren't going to happen, so they happened.
@ReWane Safe to assume we'll get at least 0 of those. Pokemon will usually have its own presentation and Metroid Prime 4 will still be a long way off so I'd be shocked if either of those showed up. We could see Zelda or Bayonetta but both are far from guaranteed.
@BloodNinja I am sorry but the direct has smash bros ultimate so I think there will be a new fighter but who knows.
Yeah, I do want to see Metroid on the switch, hopefully it happens.
I am sure you will approve that Metroid on switch?
It's taken years of practice but I know better than to get super hyped about these events. Better to go in with mild to low expectations and come out happy, than to go in expecting BOTW 2, Metroid Prime Trilogy and Prime 4, Pokemon D/P remakes, Animal Crossing New Horizons DLC, Xenoblade X port, Netflix, Crunchyroll and Disney +, GB, GBA, N64 and Gamecube NSO support, messaging, themes, and Switch Pro announcement.
So, low expectations. Got it!
@Heavyarms55
That about covers it
Is only natural for ppl to be talking about Zelda on 35th Anniversary though
Maybe not the big one yet (BoW2) but perhaps they will announce some remakes.
I wouldn't be surprised if BotW2 was originally scheduled for March this year, to match up with the anniversary (which was even on a Friday this year), but I think it more likely to be an "E3" announcment, as a holiday title because of Covid
@anoyonmus
Pokemon normally takes cake around that time so it would have to be before
@VoidofLight True, Nintendo might have something completely different up their sleeve. I'm just saying that I think there will be at least one big announcement tomorrow, and Zelda has a good chance of being that.
@ianl579 Honestly I hope it is. I'm just wanting to get answers to the teaser they gave us. I also want to know how this one will be different from the original.
I expect nothing, however I'm sure I'll still be disappointed.
Zelda will be in the Direct...which Zelda? Have wait and see.
Oh boy a bunch of words who cares why is this worth reporting on?
@VoidofLight Same here!
@MarinoKadame Yeet yes plez
Zelda collection and some sort of Battle Royal thing for online. BOTW vague trailer with a little more content and a general, non-specific release date. My hopes are not high.
Don't get your hopes up people. We might get a tiny peek but it'll be very doubtful that you'll be satisfied.
@anoyonmus I've been playing Metroid since 1987, I would 100% approve a (good) Metroid release on the Switch.

Experts agree that Nintendo Directs are like cocaine to Nintendo fanatics and urge those fanatics to 'just calm down before they harm themselves'.
@michellelynn0976 I do not think Nintendo cares about E3. Why would they pay them money for a digital event, when they can just... do their own.
Zelda 35th anniversary collection releases on the 4 year anniversary of switch...later that month 35th Mario collection gets pulled... March 31...... breath of the wild 2 and Mario kart 9 Holliday 21. Prime trilogy June...apex legends video for the soon release.
I think there will be tons of huge announcements as itβs been forever since a real deal Holyfield direct... I think for all games coming out this year. Iβm sure they delayed lots of stuff last year since COVID. Now they will roll out the carpet on it all and the E3 stuff will be like showing off in-depth. Iβd say up to two must own games a month.
But Iβd be more then happy with a just Zelda collection haha....
As much as I enjoyed Breath of the Wild, could we ask for things other than the usual rotation of Zelda-Mario-PokΓ©mon-Smash Bros.-Zelda? How about F-Zero, Pilotwings, Punch Out, Golden Sun, Advance Wars, Warioware, Elite Beat Agents, Star Tropics, or any of the other franchises that Nintendo neglects for generations on end? Let them take their sweet time and release the next Zelda as a launch title for the next batch of hardware!
People don't want to wait on games. We want them now, now, NOW instead of patently waiting. This is why we deserve undercooked games like Pokemon Sword and Shield. I expect BotW2 no sooner than 2022 Q4. Good. More time for it to get developed.
@jamesthemagi Honestly I would expect at least a teaser or a mention of BOTW2. Not a release date or even a trailer probably, but a window, like "Holiday 2021" or "spring 2022". It has been a while since they confirmed it was in development and it is the 35th. But I would not expect it to be a focus at all. More like something they tack on at the very end almost like a bonus.
I loved BOTW. It would make my day if we saw some news for BOTW2.
I'm beginning to believe that BOTW2 is being developed along the same lines as several Zelda before it, a hybrid release crossing the current platform and next-gen. Switch Pro, maybe? I don't know how anyone could be shocked by that.
Fingers crossed
@Orpheus79V Nintendo said they are focusing on games for the first half, you know Zelda will be a holiday title. If it is there, hey, I'll be down with that, but I'm not holding my breath.
Iβm ready to dust off my switch since it hasnβt been turned on in almost 2 years. Breath of the wild would be that game to do so.
There's only one question I have towards BotW 2. Release date is definitely not it - I don't even have all of the first game's map unlocked yet, and that's after 120 hours!
I do think BotW 2 will be released this year. And it might even be an early release. Or we might get a Switch port of The Wind Waker HD, Twilight Princess HD and Skyward Sword first with BotW2 coming in Q4.
Nintendo shot itself in the foot making celebrating 35th anniversaries a thing.
They'll have to go through this whole thing again for the 40th! Constantly spending time and resources creating rereleases, deluxe editions and collections for whatever console is around then, causing further delays in actual new games.
Iβm cool with waiting for botw2 news. When they do announce a release date, it will then be delayed again. I canβt think of a new 3D Zelda that this hasnβt happened too. Could be wrong tho! Xx anyway hope there are a few surprises! Xxx
We all want BOTW2 news, and if it comes today then that's just swell! Just keep your expectations in check to avoid disappointment!
If you assume that the only things announced at the Direct are going to be a Pikmin 3DS Port, some obscure GameCube game remaster, an RPG with a terrifyingly long title that has no fan base outside of Japan, an Animal Crossing update and a Smash announcement, then you can't be disappointed.
Please understand..
π
I'm calling a new Ring Fit accessory game or something else entirely leftfield.
I'd actually like a new experience with the excellent Ring Fit kit.
Why aren't people refering to it as "BotW Pro"? It would make as much sense as what they are calling a possible improved switch.
βThis year also happens to be The Legend of Zelda's 35th anniversaryβ
The original Zelda released on February 21st 1986. Makes sense this direct will at least announce the anniversary in some way.
Marioβs 35th was announced September 3rd, its original release date was September 13th 1985.
I just really want NMH 3 news tbh, BOTW 2 would be a nice treat ontop of it
Prepare yourselves for disappointed doomsayers.
Won't worry myself with this, because it's already announced and a short clip was shown back in 2019 direct, even if we never really understood what's going on entirely. So not getting my hopes high.
If people learned how to read.there is no mp4 and no botw 2.this direct is for the first half of 2021.those 2 games ain't coming in the first half of 2021 lol
Omg give it up. It's not gonna happen, go away
I just want that direct now lol. Show me some good games coming asap.
@Porky that would make it over 5 years since release of the original, there is no way it will take that long.
Bayonetta 3 has a bigger chance of getting a release date than Breath of the Wild 2 because of development time, and Metroid Prime 4? Pretend the game started development in 2019.
But here's the question. Would the 35th Anniversary be the reason for BotW 2 to be released, or would it be the reason for BotW 2 to be held back from other Zelda games? I think some Zelda fans are getting a little too hopeful.
nintendo hardcore fans sure like to set themselves up for disappointment with unrealistic expectations! Can't wait to have a good laugh at people being mad at nintendo for not announcing something they never promised.
It's always the same thing with new directs announced: Overhype, disappointement and angriness from fanboys
@michellelynn0976 Exactly, we are only getting games from the first half of 2021, no BOTW 2 this time around
@Darkyoshi98 Boom, exactly
We are of course gonna be disappointed. Remember that bakugan direct π¬
sigh. if this game is not at the direct so many people will cry. "this is the worst direct ever" even though with mario, who had his own 35 anniv. direct. the same will happen with zelda. so prepare yourself. BOTW2 May not be shown. so just calm down set your self for some good surprizes and just enjoy the direct. it is not the end of the world if the game is not there.
@michellelynn0976 I agree. I think that we'll get all the news about Zelda in a dedicated direct. If we get any news about the anniversary in this one, I think it's safe to say that's all we're getting
@Rhaoulos because it's a sequel, not an improved version of the original?
Skyward Sword HD!!!!!
@michellelynn0976 I wasn't saying BOTW2 would come that early. I just don't think Nintendo cares about E3.
@Orpheus79V My apologies.
@BenAV Metroid prime 4 is releasing on xbox.
