Indie 2D platform series Spelunky is getting the trusty Switch treatment as both Spelunky and Spelunky 2 have been announced for Nintendo's hybrid platform.
Revealed during today's Indie World Showcase, both titles will become available on the Switch eShop in summer 2021. The series, developed by Mossmouth, is known for its procedurally generated caves which have you collecting lots of treasure, fighting away enemies, and dodging traps.
Here's some PR:
With Spelunky and Spelunky 2, brave your way through treacherous tunnels and caverns, outfitted with the survival supplies you find along the way. Featuring dense worlds teeming with secrets, surprises and slapstick hilarity, each time you play promises danger and delight. Watch out for leprechauns, ghosts, flying fish and galloping turkeys as you explore the unknown. Plunge into Spelunky and Spelunky 2 when both games launch on Nintendo Switch in summer 2021.
Both games are considered to be well worth your time, each being heavily praised by critics on other platforms.

Man I'm gonna be terrible at this game.
This is great I was thinking about picking this up on Ps4. Will definitely hold out for the switch version!😎
game of the year for 2021
That was a nice surprise. Never played either of them but have watched a little and have heard nothing but good things so I'm keen to give them a go. Always love a good roguelite.
Would be cool if they bundled them into one game file at a decent price.
As they say “the DaRk SOuLS of rouge likes”
Well ain’t that a surprise ain’t it? Used to play spelunky on mah ps3..
I've been hoping for Spelunky since Switch's launch and I'm happy it finally happened. I had a feeling it had a chance now that Spelunky 2 is out. Already own both on Steam but I'll buy them again. Perfect fit for Switch.
Looks interesting. Might give it a go.
That was the highlight of today’s show
Dude I haven't even watched the indie world showcase but after seeing that Among Us and Spelunky 1 & 2 are coming I already know that it was awesome
Spelunky 1 is a classic. I heard good things about the sequel.
Spelunky was one of my hopes for the indie world presentation, so I came away satisfied. May finally give Among Us a try as well
Which is better to begin with?
Awesome games, glad to see them get a release on switch.
Be aware that they are extremely unforgiving, and it is very easy for the player to die, so your experience will be directly proportional to tolerance of frustration.
That's how I particularly like latest franchise entries announced on Switch - alongside the previous ones. :3 And both games look very neat, too!
Yes Yes Yes!!! Thank you Derek! Two best games for the best platform. GOTY 2021.
Yes! Yes! Yes! I absolutely loved Spelunky on Vita. When Spelunky 2 came to PS4 I held off as the original was such a delight to play on a portable system. I nearly caved in when it went on sale recently but am glad I didn't as the Switch feels like the natural home for it.
My last job would get rrreeeaaaaalll slow in the winter, so I downloaded the free 8-bit version of Spelunky, and spent countless hours trying to beat it. Which I did manage a couple times! But pretty sure there were bonus bosses or some type of shenanigan that I never cleared. I'd love to give this a go on the Switch, but man, I've got so many other roguelikes to sink time into now-a-days.
Summer? Bummer.
Can't wait to play it.
@neufel I know right - this Indie World should have been chock full of games releasing this month to cash in on the holiday vibe and instead they give us a 6 month wait. Frustrating.
passes out from happiness
@Abeedo
From what I've read up on in user reviews about the second one, the general consensus among both newcomers and veterans to the series is that the first Spelunky is both the better starting point for newcomers, and just an overall better designed game.
I haven't personally played the second one, but I can whole-heartedly recommend the first one in both its HD and non-HD iterations.
@somebread game is already out on other platforms, so probably not.
Spelunky 1 (HD) is both my favourite game ever, and also my most loathed game ever. I’ve beat it many many times now but can still enjoy beating a hell run every couple of months. Despite the challenge it really is a very special game - even compared to special games. And I’ve heard great things about 2. Also I’ve never played multiplayer so online is my chance
Spelunky actually controls a lot like the best 2D Marios - but maybe better! That was my impression the first time I played it and it still feels that refined and kinda similar countless hours in. It’s like Mario if it was made sadistic.
@TrixieSparkle
The first was pretty much perfect.
They could never have hoped to improve on perfection.
Its also perfect for the VITA (I dont need the Switch version....but Id take it if it was in a physical double pack)
But Ive held out picking up the PS4 version because I wanted a portable Spelunky 2.
So Ill definatly pick that up!
@Abeedo First one for sure. It's not as brutally difficult and it explains the mechanics better. I also like its random map generation more. The rooms feel more fair. The sequel seems to be for those who have done all the first game has to offer and yearn for more.
Nintendo are going to make me double dip with these two, aren't they
@Abeedo As often is the case with sequels of this type of games, some of the design choices in the sequel are a little difficult to understand if you haven't played the first game. But if you play the first game and then the sequel, you go "ah, that's a nice variation of the old mechanics". Playing the first game first makes the sequel better.
Played the death out of the first on PS Vita. Going to do the same with the second on Switch!
I just bought La-Mulana 1 & 2 for Switch on retail. Needless to say, these 2 gems fix my spelunking needs for now, but if they release Spelunky 1 & 2 in a nice retail collection as well, chances are I'll buy it. I hope they're as good as La-Mulana 1 & 2.
@Res462 You think that will stop me?
Great game, difficulty level and very good learning
I was hoping these will come to Switch someday and now I'm glad they finally would.
What took them so long? This is one those games that could probably have been ported to the Switch with an hour's worth of work.
I'm very excited for this, I've always wanted it on Switch! I haven't played the second one so I'm in for a treat too!
I'm currently making a list on list challenges of 31 of my favorites as far as games go (my favorite number is 31 & I'm turning 31 very soon). Spelunky HD is my #1. I'm very much looking forward to playing Spelunky 2 for the first time on my favorite console!
