There's understandably a spotlight on Super Mario 3D World with its impending Switch port but we shouldn't forget what came before. 3D Land may be the better selling game but it simply doesn't have the same prominence in conversation and is largely seen as the lesser of the two. We're not here to compare them though, we went back to the 3DS original to see why it should be remembered on its own merits.
This is the game the saved 3DS and justified stereoscopic 3D - who knows where the system would be without it. 3D Land merged the essence of Sandbox Mario with the basics of the traditional 2D series and the results feel effortlessly elegant. Nintendo clearly had a lot of ideas for this one, so many in fact that they essentially packed a sequel into this post game!
We had a blast revisiting 3D Land and while it certainly has its shortcomings, we believe it deserves to stand alongside every other game in the series.
What do you think about Super Mario 3D Land almost 10 years later? (We're in denial about this game being 10 in November too)

I just don’t get where this sudden narrative of Super Mario 3D Land being underrated or forgotten has come from. It sold almost 13 million copies. Fair enough if it was a game that wasn’t a bestseller but it’s just strange.
I'd rather have a remastered version of SM3DL running in 1080p60fps alongside SM3DW than Bowser's Fury
@nessisonett Sometimes, things sell well because of name-brand recognition, but don't actually become well-received. In general forums/chat with friends, I feel like I'm the only person that likes this game, which is odd for something that sold millions!
That being said, a Switch port of this game would be lovely, get on it, Nintendo! The investors are watching, from the shadows!
NINJA APPROVED
Honestly I think the initial reaction to 3D World on Wii U kind of speaks more about how much 3D Land did change the narrative around 3D Mario
That game was considered a killer app for the 3DS at release and people thought it actually played to the 3DS' strengths incredibly well with its more concise level design and shorter length, in addition to being one of the few games that actually incorporated 3D directly into the gameplay. 3D World having the reaction it did in regards to being criticized for using a game that worked on a handheld and just blowing it up on the TV speaks a lot to how much 3D Land was in the conversation when it came to highlights in the 3DS library
@nessisonett I mean if 3D Land being in the top 10 best selling 3DS games of all time and being widely regarded as the game that saved the system's longevity isn't considered best selling then I don't know what is
WHO the hell forgot this game? I bet one of the main reasones people got a 3ds was to buy this game. No won will shut up about it showing up in 3d all stars two, ITS NOT FORGOTEN Its compleatly fine every one knows what this game his, there is no way anyone forgot it, so idk where this came from.
The game may not be liked quite as well as most other 3D Mario games but it's still held in pretty high regard for most people still and most likely remembered, yeah. I find it to be one of the lesser 3D Mario games but still enjoyed it a lot and look back on it fondly. I still remember those on-stage E3 images from when this game was still under the Super Mario working title even.
@nessisonett it can sell a ton while also being underrated and forgotten about. It hasn't been much talked about since 3D World came out on Wii U, and that game's improvements seemed to make a lot of people overlook it. Before that I think things were certainly different though, and I think it's omission is bringing it back into people's minds again.
Great take on 3d Mario on a portable.
Great bowser battle.
I don't really think this game is that underrated. It's a great game, but it isn't on the level of something like Odyssey or Galaxy. Also, it sold like 13 million units.
Maybe I’m an outlier, but this game didn’t click with me - perhaps I’ll go back and give it a retry. Either way, I feel it’s a game uniquely suited to a very small screen - not sure how that’d translate to switch, especially in docked mode.
@mariomaster96,
I would personally not, if you have 3-D world land is pretty redundant, even more when you need the 3DS for the 3-D effect, which was a great selling point of the game.
I will keep saying it... Its my favorite 3D Mario. (I just finished Galaxy for the first time two days ago, and I must say that is amazing, I truly understand why everyone loves it.. But I prefer the linear level design on a Mario game)
Love this game, especially the use of 3D. That's what sets it apart from the other mario games. Same as Samus returns, love the depth of the levels.
@mariomaster96 yes I rather buy old games I have played over and over again before than new experiences
@AlienigenX you now need to play galaxy 2
@TheFrenchiestFry,
I don't recall the article stating 3-D land did not sell well, they simply stated it was not held in such a high regard as 3-D world, which to be honest I don't know what this is based on.
Compared to other Mario games, it way too disjointed and bland. It really felt they rushed it to get it on time for christmas.
Easily still one of my favorite Mario games. Starts off too easy, but then it quickly becomes perfect.
@WahooTime Yeah I'd rather play new games too but SM3DW+Bowser's Fury is like 5% new game and 95% old game so at this point it doesn't really matter if it's 100% old game instead
It was okay for me, very basic 3D platformer with time limit.
I didn't play the games for very long time after i have finished the game several years ago.
@mariomaster96 let’s say 3d world takes 8 hours to finish and bowsers fury you can finish in 3 hours.
3d land is a great game that uses the 3d feature well.
Yeaahh, no. Sorry, but ripping some level gimmicks from Galaxy 2 isn't enough to make 3D Mario "original", the mechanics matter most when it comes to creativity and the early 2010s Mario games don't have them, so they all feel creatively bankrupt and samey. 3D Land is still NSMB 3D and deserves to be forgotten, and 3D World did too until Bowser's Fury.
@WahooTime I'm pretty sure SM3DW takes longer than 8hours to finish if you play every level, collect every green star und every stamp (which is all required to unlock the final level)
I liked it at the time because it the first good portable 3D Mario game. Upon revisiting it feels very slight, but it was definitely a 10/10 when it came out
I wish the Wii instalments (and even the DS and 3DS instalments) were included in New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe as well. They could have called it New Super Mario Bros. All Stars rather than the silly-sounding "U Deluxe".
And by extension, I was hoping that a full HD port of 3D Land would have been thrown in with 3D World (meanwhile, Bowser's Fury could have been a more fleshed out late 2021 release).
Ifs and buts...
@nessisonett It's obviously not a sudden thing this love for 3D Land, it's a respond to 3D Land being left out of 3D Allstar for no reason(because Nintendo were too lazy to remaster it for the Switch).
Another Mario 3D Land article so soon, really? What kind of obsession do you have with this game? XD
https://www.nintendolife.com/news/2021/01/feature_remembering_super_mario_3d_land_3d_worldrs_oft-forgotten_predecessor
This game was bland and boring.
@Isaix Why would it be in 3D All-Stars? It’s not even close to being like the other 3 games and Galaxy 2 is far more of an omission.
Who has forgotten it? The only people trying to suggest Super Mario 3D Land has been forgotten are the Nintendo Life writers.
Super Mario 3D Land ***** on New Super Mario Bros 2 - so how on earth did the latter outsell the former?
@nessisonett It's so weird. The only place I've ever heard that is Nintendolife.
SMG2 and 3D land switch port when?
Forgotten? The game sold like over ten mil.
Whenever I discuss Mario games with people, its usually regarded as one of the best after the NSMB formula got stale.
I disagree that it was a much harder game to play in 2D.
The only areas that took full advantage of 3D were those small single screen bonus rooms like seen at 2:59. Those spots couldn't be fully enjoyed in 2D, but it was a trivial matter to muddle through those few spots.
I played it through to 100% completion for the first time in 2020 and had zero difficulties doing so in 2D (I'm legally blind in one eye so the 3D slider was always kept turned off). While not as visually spectacular such as in the vertically oriented levels that were designed to show off the stereoscopic 3D effect, such levels are still fully 2D friendly.
@nessisonett Well the point of 3D Allstar is to make a collection of 3D Mario adventures and 3D Land is a 3D game. It's different sure but it's still Mario, having it in there is only a plus for the player, so why not have it be in there?
It's a fantastic game with no 'but' at all and I'm delighted to hear people finally and repeatedly discussing the merits of this wonderful Mario adventure. It's just great great platforming without any fluff. It's high on my Mario games list - because that list is based on sheer fun - and 3D Land has that in spades.
@mariomaster96 oh ok if your talking about 100% than I’m sure bowsers fury will take over 4 hours
You should try playing this running through Dolphin emulation at 4K inside VR in stereoscopic 3D on a giant virtual cinema screen via Bigscreen....
I honestly still think this is the best look for a 3D Mario game to date, with all the designs and stuff spot on, but also with a simple, clean, and soft shading to everything, with no real obvious shaders making things look more technically "showy" but also a bit strange, and just everything being as it should. It's a beautiful game, especially when you see it running in 4K and fully understand how great at job they did with the 3D assets and textures and stuff here.
PS. Now try playing Eternal Darkness on Dolphin and inside VR on Bigscreen too--and, yes, you can STILL see this in stereoscopic 3D using some of the settings in Dolphin and the display options in Bigscreen--it will blow you away.
It's not my favorite Mario adventure, but it's definitely a nice, chill one. This video's making me want to revisit the game, lol. I still have the Tanooki Mario keychain that came with my preorder.
Is this another "I want a 3DS game on Switch" argument? Choose your battles. We've got 3D World arriving next week, and we still have zero 3DS games ported to Switch.
@nocdaes Hyrule Warriors 3DS was ported.
I need to go back to the special stages. I can't remember how many of them I completed.
I had a good time with it. Actually finally played through it last month. Plan to finally play thru 3d world this upcoming week, but on my wii u since I have it and never completed it lol
I was so late to the 3ds, that 3D Land is five years old for me.
@nocdaes If three people in comments ask for 3ds ports, it will jinx everything, and 3ds ports will be all Nintendo does for the Switch, and there will be no turning back! 🤪🤪😉
They say insanity is doing the same thing again and expecting a different result...
I haven't forgotten 3D Land, it's a decent game but 3D World was much better for me personally.
3D Land was awesome! I think what's happening here is nowadays its way easier to overthink and over analyze everything. I remember enjoying the game all the way to the end. That's all that mattered to me!
Didn't 3D Land play a massive part in saving the 3DS? Yes its not the best Mario game i would argue its the best original Mario game on handheld. The game sold well, helped saved the 3DS and got great reviews, i think it has a great legacy.
Probably my favorite 3D Mario after Galaxy 2. It's just endlessly fun.
Just release this as paid solo DLC for 3D world.
@sanderev wasn’t Hyrule Warriors originally on WiiU tho?
Am I missing something? Or people just praising it due to it being Mario again? The 3D implementation is cool, but nothing stands out as this amazing 3d platformer. Levels are dull to look at and way too simple in nature, yes I know this is a handheld game, but these are just pathetic. Doesn't help that half of them are rehashes. Boss fighta are at their absolute laziest in this game as well. Please someone tell me, why is this considered a good game?
@Bolt_Strike I will never understand why you gamecube era kids have a weird hatred for any Mario Game between 2006 and 2017 (excluding the first Galaxy usually.) I think they have more creativity and solid gameplay than people give it credit for.
Great game! I first played it 2.5 years ago a bit after I got back into gaming with a New 2DS XL. A few months back I decided I had to experience it in Stereoscopic 3D so I bought a new New 3DS XL someone was selling. It was worth it. The 3D really adds to the experience. Currently enjoying the 3D in A Link Between Worlds as well.
Looking forward to 3D World + Bowser’s Fury next week. I’ve never played it. With the multiplayer maybe my kids will want to play it with me. They are currently really in to Mario Odyssey.
Great game with one of the best uses of the 3D effect, but even without that, still worth a playthrough. I hope both this game and Super Mario Galaxy 2 will eventually find their way to Switch.
@BirdBoy16 True, but the 3DS version had additional content, which was also ported to the Switch
my 3DS still gets tons of use
and I got a ps5 day one - but that doesn't have Samus on it
I always preferred 3D Land as the levels were shorter and easier to speedrun. There was even a water level you could finish in less than 10 seconds if you skipped it all with the Tanooki Suit!
Oh and it had the best Bowser fight in the series, pre Odyssey
@sanderev fair enough
I personally don't think they game had any shortcomings. The 3D effect was used well but wasn't completely necessary. The soundtrack was exciting and engaging
The game's levels were colorful and plentiful on secrets, and Mario controlled incredibly well. And the amount of content in the game was pretty staggering for a portable 3D Mario game. It easily stands alongside the others, even if nobody talks about it.
Still one of our favorite Mario games. My son was much younger when it came out, and I remember how much we appreciated that it was accessible for him but could still provide some challenge for those of us trying to 100% it.
This game was the second game I ever 100%ed and it's the reason I like 3D Mario and the reason I'm getting 3D World.
