Thanks to today's financial earnings release, in which Nintendo revealed that the Switch has now overtaken the 3DS's lifetime sales, we now have an updated list of the Switch's best-selling titles.
In recent years, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe has consistently reigned supreme at the top of this list – it's perhaps no surprise, then, that the Mario Kart 8 titles have now become the best-selling of the series – but has Animal Crossing: New Horizons finally managed to zoom past Mario and co. for first position in this latest update?
Interestingly, not quite. Despite New Horizons selling a staggering 19.4 million copies between April and December after an already-impressive launch month, Mario Kart remains on top. No new games have managed to break into the top ten since the list was last published back in November, although Super Mario Party has now overtaken the Pokémon: Let's Go titles.
Note that this data only includes Nintendo-published titles:
Top Ten Best-Selling Nintendo Switch Games (as of 31st December 2020):
- Mario Kart 8 Deluxe - 33.41 million
- Animal Crossing: New Horizons - 31.18 million
- Super Smash Bros. Ultimate - 22.85 million
- The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild - 21.45 million
- Pokémon Sword and Shield - 20.35 million
- Super Mario Odyssey - 20.23 million
- Super Mario Party - 13.82 million
- Pokémon: Let's Go, Pikachu! / Let's Go, Eevee! - 13.00 million
- Splatoon 2 - 11.90 million
- New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe - 9.82 million
The numbers above are worldwide sales and include retail, digital, and copies bundled with hardware all combined.
Are you surprised to see Mario Kart 8 Deluxe still on top? Do you think Animal Crossing will eventually overtake it? Feel free to share your thoughts below.

I'm hoping for a zelda collection lol
I wonder how well Pokemon Glittering Pearl & Glistening Diamond will sell and where they will place on this list (and yes, I did just make those names up 😁)
I gotta say, seeing Zelda sell more than Pokemon makes me feel good.
And Zelda was at 16.34 million versus Pokemon at 16.06 million this time last year, so they have both kept pace with one another; in fact, Zelda sold 5 million versus Pokemon's roughly 4 million in 2020.
Glad to see BotW still holding on as it's my personal favourite but I'm interested to see how this list will change over the coming year
On a separate note.....I wonder how well MHR will do?
Previous Nintendo system entries seem to be 4.5m and below.
While i was hoping ACNH overtake Mario Kart 8 Deluxe place, i still hoping ARMS got more attention.
A Dhalsim style of Boxing game should get more love.
the switch is on a role. and I wonder why the ps4 which has sold 100 million units. Not one of their 1st party games has sold 20 million copies. And GTA5 is not a first party game. the switch have 4 that have sold 20 million and 2 have sold 30 million. 6 first party games have sold over 20 million copies and Sony Has 0.? why do they buy a ps4 if they do not buy the games. spiderman is at 16 million
the ps4 version only. looks like switch owners have a ton of AAA titles to enjoy while sony does not.
No surprise, it's all the usual predictable 1st party IP.
@JeffreyEngineer Seeing 4 games from different genres beat Pokemon is a great sign.
Not hating on Pokemon really - just enjoying the fact that Nintendo means so much more first.
I have five out of ten and want four out of the remaining five.
Do we think Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury will see Odyssey type numbers? I wouldn't be surprised as it has elements of both Odyssey and
NSMB so should have wide appeal.
I'd like to know current sales, for Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze and Captain Toad... 🤔
@brunojenso 10/10 comment there.
Be interesting to see if Super Mario 3D World gets in there. I hope Super Mario 3D All-Stars gets past NSMBUD, it's a much better package in terms of quality and content, though as it's only got another two months on sale that may well not happen.
Mario Odyssey should be number one but at least its in the top 10. My favorite game of all time such a Masterpiece.
@Bizaster how?
Also, swsh sold more than odyessy? Ok
Is there a larger list somewhere? Would like to see how gems such as Luigi’s Mansion and Astral Chain, or other third party stuff hold up.
That ACNH number! Over 31 million copies sold in under a year is insane!
@Friendly This is a larger list....BUT it's a bit deceptive I think, I believe it only lists software that had a million in sales IN THE LAST YEAR (that's why XBC2 isn't listed even though it was done like 2 mill) - but shows the full totals.
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe – 33.41 million
Animal Crossing: New Horizons – 31.18 million
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate – 22.85 million
Zelda: Breath of the Wild – 21.45 million
Pokemon Sword/Shield – 20.35 million
Super Mario Odyssey – 20.23 million
Super Mario Party – 13.82 million
Pokemon: Let’s Go, Pikachu / Eevee – 13.00 million
Splatoon 2 – 11.90 million
New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe – 9.82 million
Luigi’s Mansion 3 – 9.13 million
Ring Fit Adventure – 8.68 million
Super Mario 3D All-Stars – 8.32 million
Super Mario Maker 2 – 6.91 million
Paper Mario: The Origami King – 3.05 million
Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity – 2.84 million (overseas)
Clubhouse Games: 51 Worldwide Classics – 2.62 million
Pikmin 3 Deluxe – 1.94 million
Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition – 1.48 million
Mario Kart Live: Home Circuit – 1.08 million
New Horizons is now the 15th most sold game. It's only sitting behind Red Dead 2 for copies sold
Crazy that there are 9 first party Switch games with sales exceeding 10 million copies, with NSMBU DX, Luigi's Mansion 3, and Ring Fit Adventure to soon join that list of the end of this current quarter.
Mario 3D World, Breath of the Wild 2, and any future mainline Pokémon games (Diamond/Pearl remake, Gen 9, etc) will also comfortable exceed 10 million copies sold.
Great top 10.
I recommend them all
@Dang69 thank you!
Great to see the gems Luigi’s Mansion, Pikmin and Age of Calamity on that list, and the gem with a small flaw Paper Mario too. Thoroughly enjoyed that game for what it is.
And still so many probably awesome games to come on this platform. Well done, Nintendo.
@Friendly What's the "small" flaw in Paper Mario? I personally think it has 1 small/medium one and 1 big one.
@JeffreyEngineer now consider when Zelda was released and when Pokémon hit market.
This might change.
Amazing numbers! I´m really glad Pikmin and Paper Mario sold so well, they´re fantastic games.
Let´s predict the next big titles. 3D World will sell around 18 million in total. Zelda BotW 2 could get to 15 million in its first year as well, with a total of 20 in its lifetime (it will finish a bit below BotW). The next Pokemon gen, if well made, could easily reach 30 million, or probably surpass it. Metroid Prime 4 will be a big hit too, getting to sell 8-10m (which is crazy for the series). As for Monster Hunter Rise, I´d say it will reach 10-12m units worldwide (5m in Japan only).
I have no idea what else they plan to release XD
I still own a glorious THREE of these (and six of the earlier posted top 30, I think?). Whoever said "Nintendo consoles are best bought for Nintendo games" would probably deem me an alien infiltrator here on Earth.😅
@Dang69 I guess he refers to the battle system. Imo, it´s not bad at all (it´s a pretty good puzzle, actually!), but the game could´ve been better if it had a more classic battle system. Anyway, it´s an incredible game in general, and I love it.
@the_beaver Don't mind the puzzle - but the lack of resistance makes it all feel like a chore. Can't lose.
@Bizaster oh yeah thats true i thought you were implying a new game would take #1
Interesting that SMBU sold so well.
So 4 of the TOP 10 are on Wii U (or deluxe editions of WiiU games) No denying the fact that WiiU, despite its dismal numbers, had a killer library...now, bring us the rest, aka Windwaker and TP, and throw in MP Trilogy while you're at it.
@Dang69 @the_beaver yeah, it’s mainly the ‘chore’ of the battles. The battle system isn’t bad, it’s just that it doesn’t reward you at all, so after a while you just want to skip them all together.
Okay so Mario Party sold really well. Nintendo, time for a big DLC update. More boards, characters and mini games.
I found it interesting that Smash is not top because I hear more people talk about Smash then animal crossing and Mario kart.
I think they should make Splatoon 3 more accessible, leaving 2 as the Melee of the series.
It shouldn't be below Mario Party in sales.
Does anyone have a list that includes the 3rd party titles? Some article said they have 29 titles that are million sellers
@Dang69 Thanks for clarifying, I was just about to ask why Fire Emblem Three Houses is not on your list... 2.87 million as of March 2020, I believe (extremely impressive for a Fire Emblem game).
@Raiko Even if they did include 3rd party, the top 10 would still be dominated by Nintendo 1st party.
If Nintendo had a Grand Theft Auto on Switch they could literally lay in the shade and watch Sony and Microsoft fight for No. 2. My comment is not being a fan boy (remember that term? Haha) it's just Nintendo is so powerful without Grand Theft Auto imagine if they had that too? 😁
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_best-selling_Nintendo_Switch_video_games?wprov=sfti1
42 games on this list. 26 are entirely Switch exclusive. 1 is a Switch Console exclusive. 6 are Nintendo games that were previously on Wii U. 4 are remakes/collections of games from older Nintendo platforms.
One of the only games I have bought twice is Mario Kart 8. Obviously so that I could play it on the Switch.
So does that count as 2 sales? I think it does.
So really the sales figures are slightly distorted.
I think gamers are getting wise to these ported games that have none, or very little additional content or graphics upgrade, but are selling at full price.
It would be interesting to see figures that show how games sales rise the more Switch Lites that are sold. I know three people that have bought Lite's to play Animal Crossing, but have not bought any other games, and they are not playing on the Switch as much any more.
@Anti-Matter
I agree. In my opinion, ARMS mechanics are simply genius, it surely brings a different flavor to the fighting game genre. I still play it from time to time to try to beat those pesky level 8 challengers.
Still, ARMS sold about 2,4 million, which is not bad at all for a new franchise. I hope Nintendo is working on a sequel, even if it´s not for current generation Switch
@the4seer FE 3H is at 3.2 Million rn, making it the best selling in the series. However it just barely beats out Fates, HOWEVER AGAIN, Fates was sold as 2 games, so in theory twice as many people bought the Switch version, if Fates consumers bought both games (not really a Pokemon game kind of split, it's 2 different games).
@tonyp1987 that would be amazing.
All except Animal Crossing, Super Mario Party, and Splatoon 2.
