Fans of old-school shmups have long been aware that the Switch is one of the best systems to own right now, not just because it's home to many fine blasters, but because it can be played in 'TATE' mode using the fantastic Flip Grip accessory.
This seemingly simple piece of plastic allows you to set your Switch in TATE mode and bolt your Joy-Con to its sides, and really does allow you to enjoy and appreciate vertically-oriented shmups to their fullest.
Those of you who are already own the Flip Grip and are looking to upgrade to the Switch OLED this week might be assuming that, like so many other Switch accessories, it works perfectly with the new model. Sadly, we have to report that this isn't the case.
While the Switch OLED is very similar in size to the original Switch, it's ever-so-slightly taller, which means that it cannot be slid comfortably into the Flip Grip. It feels as though a little force might make it slide in, but we'd imagine it will result in some pretty serious cosmetic damage to the Switch OLED's casing – and we'd rather not risk putting that theory to the test if that's all the same to you. Our Switch OLED review unit is still so shiny!
Thankfully, Flip Grip creator Mike Choi – the same guy who created the amazing "New Nintendo Switch DS" – tells us that he expected this to be the case, and a revised model is in development as we speak.

Go figure...I thought something was Switchy about the OLED.
Love my flip grip but man it's edges are way too sharp. Sliced my finger open once on the dang thing reaching into my backpack. I'm that one dude with a bloody flip grip.
The Satisfye and Fixture S1 grips won't work either.
I have a Flipgrip and Satisfye grip. With the £310 for new Oled model and money for 2 new grips, it would be a very expensive upgrade.
I still regularly play Groove Coaster with my Flip Grip so this is actually a dealbreaker for me for the OLED Switch for the time being. Hopefully a revised Flip Grip doesn't take too long.
For those that upgrade, you can easily sell your old Flipgrip.
Wanted to use my flipgrip recently, but my left joy con turns off the second I pull it off my Switch, happens every time although it's fully charged. Not buying new ones again, so no flipgrip for me anyway.
I really need to buy Ikaruga to play with my Flip Grip someday...
Please keep us informed when he releases a new model. I’ll buy it again since I got the OLED to be my primary handheld switch.
I haven’t got round to ordering my flip grip; guess I’ll wait a little longer.
They never made one for the Switch Lite either so how come no one was sad about that? Regardless, you could still play TATE mode without the thing, just in table top mode and with you own custom kickstand.
@HIGHscores85 You game so hard, you put blood, sweet and tears into it. Legend.
NINJA APPROVED
@Dr_Corndog I play Ikaruga on my rotating monitor and it’s the way it’s meant to be played. Same for Dodonpachi and other shmups. I never tried a flip grip, I wonder how easy it is to hold the Switch without wrist cramps?
Never could find one. I have a stand that works tho.
@BloodNinja It's pretty comfy, though I've never used it for a long period of time.
Its nice how the split pad pro still fits the oled switch, it doesn’t feature rumble but it’s fit seems better than any grip out there.
I’d like to have a flip grip at some point as well… maybe wait for the next gen switch to be sure
Wow, I feel like nintendo has really... FLIPPED ME OFF!
@Paperboy mine used to do that, it's a fairly simple ribbon change if you're not scared to do it yourself
@Dr_Corndog I have to try and get one at some point, because games like Ikaruga are unreadable for me in the standard resolution. I'm also waiting for more shmups to be released to justify the purchase. If Mushihimesama Futari is ever released, that will probably cause me to get one!
@BigE That's good to know, I may try that, thanks!
I want one for playing stern pinball arcade & pinball FX 3
What a bummer! I use a Satisfye grip and case so my long fingers aren't contorted into crab claws trying to play in handheld. I was afraid the OLED would have a just slightly different form factor that wouldn't work with these accessories.
I'll just hold off and hope Satisfye puts out a new grip when/if the time to replace my Switch comes.
At least I can still play tate mode on my TV - Downwell and the video pinball games I've collected are so much better that way!
For me that's actually a big loss. Ah well, what's next Nintendo?
@Specter_of-the_OLED I make stands using LEGO bricks!
This has been known since July. https://www.express.co.uk/entertainment/gaming/1461157/Nintendo-Switch-OLED-Model-design-flaw-shoot-em-up-shmup-Flip-Grip
Hopefully Mike Choi lives up to his promise and makes one for the OLED. I'll throw my money at it.
I have a Flip Grip, Satisfye, and Fixture S1... three more reasons I have no interest in the OLED Switch.
I do hope there is a re-design of the Flip Grip that works with all Switches... and it needs to work with the Switch screen rotated clockwise or counter-clockwise.
Anyone know if hori split pad pro works with the oled ?
What game is that in the article picture?
Time for another kick starter.
I love the concept of the Flip Grip.
It would have been cool had Nintendo thought of and utilized this idea. All the vertical games would play awesome with this set up.
Just imagine for a second, NDS or 3DS ports or Emulators running with the Flip Grip set-up.
That would just add to the idea that the Switch is in a sense the culmination to all of what Nintendo released before it.
@HolyGeez03 Three more reasons you aren't interested in the OLED. May I ask what the other reasons are?
@Dan420
1) I have a Flip Grip
2) I have a Satisfye grip
3) I have a Fixture S1
@HolyGeez03 You said those were 3 MORE reasons you didn't want the Switch OLED, therefore referring that you had previous reasons for not wanting the Switch OLED. I was asking what the other reasons were.
@Dan420 Ok... so the main reason is because it's not worth the upgrade for me, just for a better screen. The items above are three more reasons not to "upgrade".
I designed and 3D printed my own basic one for the original model of the switch for playing Downwell.

I am not planning to get an OLED model, but someone who has one could probably adjust the OpenSCAD files to make it fit.
@HolyGeez03 Fair enough. I think a lot of people are thinking the same way. My Switch is a first gen with the older processor so I'm looking forward to increased battery life from the OLED. The improved screen and speakers are big for me too since I play a lot in handheld. The additional built in memory, improved kickstand, wired LAN, and sexy white dock are just icing. I can totally understand not wanting to shell out the cash though. I paid for my OLED with gamestop giftcards I bought online for over 10% off, so it cost me less than $320. No sales tax here in Oregon. I also have an active Ebay account to sell my old Switch, I hope to get around $250 for it. So in the end upgrading to the OLED will only set me back about $70. So for me it was a no brainer to upgrade but I can see why some people would rather wait until an actual Switch 'Pro' comes out.
@DamienMcferren can the site update us when a new one is released?
@Paperboy no worries, I've also replaced three thumb sticks for about €6 each plus screwdrivers from replacebase in the uk if that helps 👍
It’s a fun accessory. It had me day dreaming of making a swivel mount for my 65” TV so I could use tate mode while docked.
@HIGHscores85
Sounds like something that would happen to me.
I have an uncanny ability to slice or split the skin under my fingernails on the most unlikely objects. It's like a super power...that no one would want.
Hold up...
That's the "flip grip" you were referring to???
I thought you meant the flip case
Ahhh... so maybe this will work then
I mean honestly, who's buying the oled switch. Such a cashgrab
@Gs69 read comment #16
@Dan420 i was at my local gamestop in NJ yesterday and was asked if I wanted to upgrade to the oled switch for $40. You need the original box and everything that came in it. It sounds like a good deal to me.
@Herbalchunk1242 That's an excellent deal I hope you jumped on it. Sadly I'm stuck selling my old Switch on eBay because my local gamestops didn't have any trade in deals. Last time I asked they were only offering like $230 in store credit for a used Switch. I have the box and everything like new, but no deals. I remember trading in my 3DS for a 3DS XL for like $50 or so years ago, I wish my local gamestops had the deal that yours had.
@Herbalchunk1242 I just called my local gamestop and they offered me $150 for my old Switch, I guess it's gone down since the OLED was released. I'll definitely get more on ebay. That's amazing that they were offering you the equivalent of $310 for your used Switch.
I shoved my oled switch in the flip grip and it was okay, but the bottom didn't slot in properly (about 1/2 cm gap). I was still able to play in tate mode and it was 'okay".
However, using a tablet/phone stand on tabletop mode felt safer and gaming was still great on the OLED. Not sure it's for everyone, but the switch slotted in this insignia perfectly fine and gaming was excellent (model NS-MTSA1-C):

There are other stands at amazon and such, but this one is excellent and adjustable.
@Herbalchunk1242 My old Switch only went for $260 with shipping on ebay, minus about $30 ebay fees, and $15 shipping, I got about $215 for it. So my upgrade to OLED set me back just over $100, I don't regret it for a second. It helped that the extra Switch OLED my wife bought for $320 in giftcards sold for $460 though. So the OLED launch actually made me money. And before anyone calls me a filthy scalper, I bought Gamestops limit of one OLED per person. I started the auction at below retail price. And best of all the winning bidder was buying the OLED for his nephew who's father died from Covid last year. The buyer was actually super grateful for my auction.
I think this is just wrong, I've been using my flipgrip with the switch oled, it's glorious. It fits in perfectly, I don't see any cosmetic damage from sliding it in and out dozens of times... I'm not one to baby my consoles though, especially if they are portable.
Where does one obtain a flip grip in 2021 anyway?
