As soon as Nintendo announced Metroid Dread - the fifth and final entry in the original Metroid story arc, we all had similar thoughts about revisiting the older entries in the series in some way or form.
If you can't see yourself playing through these classic titles before the new one arrives this October, never fear - as our senior video producer, Alex Olney, is here to give you a crash course in the entire history of the Metroid series. Not only does he cover the games you might want to know about leading into Metroid Dread, but he also touches on other entries such as the Metroid Prime series and even Metroid: Other M.
Be warned though - there are spoilers in the above video if you haven't played certain games before, but it's gotta be one of the fastest ways you can get up to date with where Samus is at in her journey. And if all of this has got you wanting to play actual copies of her older adventures, you can access most of her past adventures across the Nintendo Switch Online service, the Wii U eShop and 3DS.
Can you see yourself replaying any (or all) of the classic Metroid games before Dread arrives? Leave a comment down below.

Only two games I don't have the plot mostly remembered for are Hunters, (Idk if First Hunt counts), and Federation Force, which I haven't played.
I never knew there was a story…
Very good to have this full (so far) story.
I (and many others) have been waiting for a new Metroid for way too long.
Our bodies are ready.
Just hook it into my veins, we don't need an update as we have played these games numerous times over waiting for a new game in the series.
It's like asking F Zero fans (myself included) if we are ready for a new game, of course we are
Just release it already.
Saying that, this is great to get you up to speed or for newcomers and those who don't live, eat and breathe these franchises
No need to know about Prime games to understand Dread. Prime is only pseudo-canon, retroacitvely placed in a quiet point in the timeline where it wouldn't interfere with events of the actual canon. Dark Samus won't turn up in Dread, the SAX could though. I doubt they'll stop for a game of mech football either. I suppose without prime and federation force it wouldn't be "the complete story".
"and then Samus was a pinball" genius!
Thanks for this, really enjoyed it.
Seeing the story all in one video made me start thinking about how it could work for a movie/series. The story is a bit all over the place and Ridley showing up all the time with different forms feels like it wouldn't work. I think if they were to do something like a series they could pick a few things from the story but then go with something original instead to make it work.
Story of Metroid, Reverse Boss Order, Any% (wr)
Samus was born. Samus got a suit. Samus beat Ridley, Draygon, Phantoon, Kraid, and then the Mother Brain in just about an hour.
She also saved the animals.
The end.
Well, when you put it all in one video, it sounds crazy.
Would anyone be interested in scheduling a time to play online multiplayer Federation Force? I can't complete the game alone, solo is impossible in places (especially when you never play FPS games). Has Nintendolife already facilitated some kind of way to get people together? I don't even know if my 3DS has friend codes? Now the game is the second newest Metroid game, there is hardly anyone playing.
I already knew the whole story about this when Game Trailer made their Metroid Retrospective many years ago. Though they didn't cover Metroid Prime Hunters, Prime Pinball, Federation Force, and Other M as those were not out yet, the whole main Metroid saga from Metroid 1-4 and the Prime trilogy were all covered.
"and even Metroid: Other M."
You make it sound like such a surprise even though the game is canon and set between the events of Super and Fusion.
Great recap. There's a couple of games I hadn't played so it's interesting to hear what went on in those.
Samus's body must be pretty messed up, especially after the events of Fusion. She's been merged with Metroid DNA, "corrupted" by Phazon, and almost killed by the X-Parasite infection.
Can’t wait for dread and 4 love this franchise….
@Inc
The Metroid vaccine saved her from the X Parasite infection and made her immune to the X, meaning she can absorb them harmlessly - in fact, it can be beneficial for her, restoring health or missiles or even recovering lost abilities.
When Phaaze was destroyed at the end of Metroid Prime 3: Corruption all the Phazon in the universe ceased existing, including what was inside Samus' body, so Phazon's pretty much a non-issue after that.
The main change for her is that she can be considered a Metroid starting with Fusion (Even etymologically, "ultimate warrior" and all that). But the Chozo had already biologically altered her before any of the games had taken place, so she stopped being a regular human long ago.
Well done, thx for the update!
There are issues with the Federation Force recap in comparison to the other games covered. The Federation Force wasn't sent to the Bermuda System to deal with the Space Pirates. They didn't know the Space Pirates were there at first, and found out via an ambush several missions in. Samus saves the Federation Force from the Rohkor Beetle on Bion, reducing that to "local forces" doesn't really cover what actually occurred and oversimplifies what exactly the Space Pirates were doing in the Bermuda System. No mention of the Doomseye and Master Brain is the equivalent of leaving the Aurora Unit 313 and Phaaze out of the Prime 3 summary. Why are those details omitted for Federation Force's summary? If you don't like the game, don't do a complete series history.
Edit: "The Deleter" is mentioned for Metroid: Other M, but not Madeline Bergman and MB?

Only beat the Prime games, which are littered with lore and story. Didn't realize the older ones packed so much too.
