Remember Goodboy Galaxy, the new Game Boy Advance game that hit Kickstarter towards the end of last month? Well, we're happy to report that the project has smashed its funding goals – and that's an understatement.
With the campaign now wrapped up, Goodboy Galaxy surpassed 1000% funding, with almost 4,000 backers generating a whopping £203,929 in total. The original goal was a relatively modest £18,000, so you could certainly say the whole thing's been something of a success.
That tremendous level of funding means that every stretch goal has been met, with physical editions headed to both Game Boy Advance and Switch. If you missed the campaign but still want to get your hands on a copy, you can pre-order here up until 3rd October (as long as you order by that date, you'll still receive all of the benefits offered to Kickstarter backers including a mention in the credits, the soundtrack, and more).
First Press Games, who will be handling the physical versions of the game, has shared the following:
"The Kickstarter campaign of Goodboy Galaxy surpassed 1000% funding and reached all its stretchgoals, containing packaged versions of the GBA and Switch version and enhancements to the game!
Thus, the development and preparations for the physical versions will move forward full steam going forth!"
"A large slice from the early physical sales will go straight into the development budget of Goodboy Galaxy, so if you decide to book your copy early, you will contribute to make the game as good as it possibly can be!"

It's so refreshing after so many Game Boy homebrew get made, but a full fledged GBA homebrew getting commercial-grade production is gonna be great.
Really, go play the demo if you haven't, it's a lot of fun. I'm really looking forward to this one.
@RupeeClock It looks like a game I wanna try out, could you please tell me where I can try out the demo?
I am one of the backers. Love me some GBA (especially Micro). And Goodboy Galaxy was handled well by releasing a demo beforehand. Here's hoping for more GBA projects in the future.
@Edwirichuu on the Kickstarter page https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/penguinrik/goodboy-galaxy-exploration-platform-game-gba-pc-and-switch/description just below a red banner with a GBA that says "demo available"
My Micro is calling to me...but so is my SWOLED!
Do these guys have a reputable history? It's really cool to see GBA games get made in 2021, but you never know with Kickstarter.
I funded Jool's Chicken Wiggle (Now Hatch Tales). It was due out December 2018 and since then he completely stopped updating the page and the game still isn't out. I loved Jools Watsham and pretty much all his games. Now I think of him as a crook/thief and doubt the game will ever release.
@Deerock69
SWOLED? I do hope that name catches on... it sounds all kinds of wrong!!! 😆
"I am going to play with my SWOLED."
"Would you like to see my SWOLED?"
"When your family arrives, I will whip out my SWOLED."
@JHDK seems like Jools never finishes the game he promises while making smaller games in between. Treasurenauts has never been cancelled, is said to be alive, but hasn't appeared in some 7 years. Hatch Tales is out on the 3DS, but seems they can't complete the HD version. Meanwhile they release lower budget and lower quality titles such as Soccer Blast, Totes, Petadachi and Pictooi (has anybody asked for those?). My favorites Jools game is Xeodrifter and honestly I feel like his output was better in the Renegade Kid days.
I want to support it cause Bomsae looks like a prinny/chicken hybrid but the comments have me worried.
Does anyone know when this is planned for release?? The preorder page says “winter 2022” towards the top of the page then “winter 2023” near the bottom?
@Zach1122 You never know. I stopped funding kickstarter games since 2013 since only half ever get released and maybe a few actually do everything they said they were going to do. (many have to just cut corners and push it out)
That is just reality. But after doing a few high tiers and get nothing it gets old.
@Paulo I really enjoyed Moon and both Dementium games.
@Ooyah
I cannot take credit for it. I'm pretty sure the first time I saw "Swoled" was on resetera. But yah, it's hilarious.
@JHDK they are good. I am not so sure how much Jools has to do with Moon and Dementium, because when Renegade Kid split, it was the now late Gregg Hargrove who kept the 3D games, while Jools kept the 2D games such as Mutant Mudds.
Enjoyed demo but didn't back as happy to wait for release
3DS cia is a pretty sweet offering, downloaded!
@Paulo I could be wrong, but I thought those games came out before the split. I know I played them on my DS so it was a while ago.
People sure like throwing money away.
They made a mistake with somehow splitting people up in super early backers and the rest for rewards besides price, the decision being communicated even only after the fact. I didn’t develop an understanding for it and many people brought it up, being excluded from a Kickstarter exclusive (packing and additional item in this case) because you weren’t there on day 1 makes absolutely no sense and does not incentivise to back (with risk attached) instead of buying once the product is finished.
If I preporder this now does that mean I pay now or pay when it’s eventually released ? Sorry this would be a first for me if ever
I played about an hour of the demo the other day on my Gameboy Micro. This is top class - the graphics, audio and animations are as good if not better than the best 2D classics on GBA. Everything felt great and I'm just hoping the full game holds up to the demo throughout the campaign.
Please, devs, more modern day GBA releases like this please!
