The release of Nintendo's Switch OLED model is now just over a few weeks away, and the excitement for this ever-so-slightly improved system with a better and bigger screen, wider stand, and new dock is starting to ramp up.
Over in Japan, we've already seen some shots of Nintendo's new device in-store and now we've got even more to share from all corners of the internet - there's even some video footage, too. The first lot of photos are courtesy of Reddit user KantanJapan:
YouTube channel Marty_Japan has some rolling footage - showcasing Metroid Dread and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe clips:
And on Twitter, we've got some more cabinet shots, courtesy of 'famicomplicated' and 'GotoGothelf':

Yep. That's a Nintendo Switch alright!
Big fan of those white joycons. Also that screen is nice.
The box design is Vertical just like New 3DS XL box.
Definitely looks cool and all but not enough for me to upgrade. I’ll be stoked for Metroid Dread that day though!
@Anti-Matter I just noticed that and was going to comment about it but......r/beatmetoit
I wish I could find Metroid Dread out in the wild already. October 8th can't get here fast enough.
The glare is strong with this one.
I know October 8th as Metroid Dread day, not Switch OLED day. But hey… this is cool. That new curvy dock is really REALLY nice. Hell, the whole thing is.
But nothing can hold an arm cannon to Samus and her new suit and colors. I can’t wait!
So rumour has it Nintendo will show off this “new controller” later this week.
Also, voice actor Stephen Critchlow has passed away, he voiced Bana in Xenoblade 2 and characters from Final Fantasy XIV: Heavensward, Dragon Quest Heroes, and the Killzone. 54 years young.
@locky-mavo RIP in Peace.
I was lucky enough to snag a pre order so l'm psyched for launch. September just flew by
Nintendo gradually approaching a vita quality handheld. Give it a few more generations.
@Moistnado someone is scared here...
Looks really good. I can't wait to see this thing in person.
@SwitchForce Sony discontinued vita some time ago. I'm sure they are not bothered by this. Vita is dead, but a nice handheld with no games to play on it.
Very pretty system but I am waiting on a BOTW2 version before I buy a third switch.
I went and looked at it yesterday too. The screen is noticably larger and looks awesome in person. I want it, but I don't need it lol.
@Mynameishello apple scan though your personal photos. Switch can be used without an internet connection, kind of, though lots of things wouldn't work.
@Ryu_Niiyama This coming Feb then!?
@KiraMoonvalley I have a Vita, but I haven't found many great games for it, apart from the obvious choices like Muramasa, Soul Sacrifice, Freedom Wars, a handful of JRPGs and a few collections of PS2 ports. Do you have any suggestions for games to look for while I can still buy games for it?
@Moistnado For that to happen the Switch would need to go on a significant weight-loss programme.
That extra realestate does make quite the difference. I just can't bring myself to buy a other system. Just, please Nintendo, release those joycon separately....
I wasn't going to bother upgrading, but considering how much I play my Switch (in handheld only) I think I will grab one afterall. But I won't be preordering it.
I just preordered the white one myself. It looks fantastic.
I still had a 10% discount member coupon plus a 90 euro giftcard for a local webshop, so it was a no-brainer for me to pre-order one with 140 euro discount. He he.
@KiraMoonvalley Thanks. I didn't like Dragon's Crown and visual novels are normally not for me (Doki doki literature club was great, but that's American). I have P4G which is great in many ways, I should have mentioned that. And most games I play are Japanese, that's the good thing about the Switch, it has Astral Chain, No more heroes, Monster Hunter, Shin Megami Tensei and so on. Anyway, glad you have found so many games you like on the Vita, I have also modded mine so I have a large pile of PS1 and PSP games to plough through before its time is up.
Looking forward to the release. I’ll be at New York Comic Con that weekend, so going to hit up the Nintendo Store Thursday night if they do a midnight launch (or that Friday morning if they don’t) and will pick up Metroid as well (usually Nintendo Store is a good place to nab collector’s editions on launch day as they’re usually better supplied day 1)
Got mine pre-ordered day one, can't wait those White joycon look awesome.
@KiraMoonvalley,
They both have great games, which is better will depend on personal opinions.
I am looking forward to getting mine. It'll be replacing a version 1.1 model bought on launch day in August 2019. For whatever reason, my one has a horrid light halo that runs around the edge of the entire screen on darker backgrounds when on higher brightness - as if the LEDs are non-uniform or leaking. I'm hoping this OLED panel will give me the deep blacks I've been missing.
It's a must at some point down the line, but this will become the base model over the coming year so no rush.
@Brad_Hogan I’ll wait for Nintendo to announce it if they so choose.
All we really need is the OLED tablet, everything else that came with the system could just be bought separately for the base model as well.
@Gwynbleidd OMG They did it, they are making stuff that could turn yellow again just like the NES, Super NES, and Game Boy. I'm loving this, that's the best feature of those old systems.
Damn, this system is looking sexy!
Love the colour and love that screen and i would have bit if they hadnt used exactly the same joy cons as the origional switch. I dont trust in the tech enough to take a punt and find in 6 months time my cons are drifting like my origional set does.
@KiraMoonvalley I am not surprised, but I couldn't find any good vita games, please recommend
Snagged an OLED and Dread preorder. CANT WAIT and praying Amazon gets my Dread copy here day 1!
Does it have a glass screen this time, or are screen protectors still a necessity?
@Mynameishello If I may be frank, honestly, I generally have not been impressed with Mercury Steam's work (I'm specifically referring to Castlevania and even Samus Returns)
I thought the sound in Castlevania was a bit horrid and crackly and the way things were designed, it was hard to see my character against the backgrounds. Maybe we can blame it on the compression for a handheld, I don't know.
Samus Returns was better, but it still did not blow me away. I beat the game and thoroughly enjoyed it though. I'm not sure if its nostalgia or what but I still enjoy the original gameboy one, perhaps a bit better. If the gameboy version had a map, I'd never touch the 3DS remake.
Now here we are with another Metroid from Mercury Steam. It's looking to be the best yet but I'm not looking forward to being pursued through the game by a robot. I don't like that sense of urgency when I want to explore but I can't because something is chasing me.
I'm not sure if that's how it will actually work, but being a huge Metroid fan, I am more than willing to give it a chance.
Hoping Mercury Steam finally gets their groove because from what I see (I'm not watching videos or looking at many screenshots so as to not spoil surprises) it certainly seems like they did and it's looking great.
So point being, my gripe here is with the studio itself and their design.
Hope you enjoy the OLED model! I'd like to think I'll get one someday but it's tough for me to put my old one to bed since my wife got it for me as a holiday gift. It's like throwing away something someone got for you. Some call me too sentimental.
As a big fan of hand-held mode, this looks BEAUTIFUL
Looks like a slightly improved Switch, the lack of any real performance improvement was a deal breaker for me, especially with the Steam handheld coming out soon, my money is going towards that.
Smyth's Winter catalogue also lists a neon version of the OLED Switch so guessing white dock with neon joycons rather than a neon dock too?
@Ryu_Niiyama Fair enough. I've gotta get that new N64 controller too after last night! Does anyone know when we can pre-order 1???
Think I'm about to pre-order a white one now
