Ah, the Smurfs, those funny little blue characters that have endured over decades in popular culture, albeit not necessarily residing in the top tier when it comes to mainstream popularity. The brand is still lucrative, though, and publisher Microids is working with developer OSome Studio to bring The Smurfs - Mission Vileaf to Switch and various platforms on 26th October.
And, well, it looks encouraging. In fact if you swapped in some different mascots and released this teaser many would possible react with "ooh, that could be good"; the sneaky peak shows the "do-it-all Smurfizer" in action, which looks a bit Super Mario Sunshine-esque in execution. There'll also be four different playable characters and five worlds, so potentially plenty to do.
There'll be two special editions, too, with 'Smurftastic Edition' having the following:
- The game on PlayStation®4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch
- 3 lithographs (10x15cm)
- A Papa Smurf keychain (5cm)
- Sticker sheets (11x8,5cm)
A Collector Edition will also have a resin Hefty Smurf figurine (14.5cm) and a digital code for the soundtrack.
No doubt there'll be more extensive trailers and details ahead of launch. Let us know what you think of the teaser in the comments!

Not sure how you get it looks decent from that short trailer but I'm willing to keep an eye on in but I'm not hopeful.
Finally, a game better than Mario Odyssey
I just hope it's not Vile AF
I'll wait for the reviews, and if it's good, I'm in.
I like the asterix games and so I’m sure I’ll
Find some fun here. Love my some smurfs anyway - day one!
Has there ever been a good Smurf game? Yeah I've loved the little critters since I was just a tiny kid but I've never enjoyed a game based on them. I heard Way forward did one a while back but I don't recall anyone talking about liking it. Plus it was based on those awful recent movies.
@Zeldafan79 I liked the one for the Atari 2600, but then again I was 4...
I hope it also featured my two favorite villains Gargamel and Azrael. You can't have a Smurfs adventure without them. Gargamel and Azrael are to the Smurfs like Bowser and Dr. Robotnik are to Mario and Sonic.
@Lordplops Nicely done
@Zeldafan79 I know this isn't a good game, especially by today's standards, but I remember having fun with that old Smurfs game on the Atari 2600. Even with that theme song playing ad-nauseam in that horrible Atari 2600 music style. I think that was at a time where I didn't know any better yet though but I just remember spending way too much time on that game as a wee lad.
...safe to say that this Switch game will definitely be better, if nothing else. XD
Edit: @GustavoMaciel Looks like we were kindred spirits back in the day lol.
Bah! Games were better in the old days! Why can't we just get a new version in the style of the fantastic dancing Smurf game on the Wii! Will be saving my money for Banal Sonderland instead
Smurf Amiibos’ would be good, used to love collecting Smurfs in the 80s
I feel like it's a shame that their popularity nowadays is more based on their horrendous CG incarnations and mediocre film adaptations. The original comics and 80s animated show were so much better and actually jolly good fun. There's room with today's technology for a handdrawn sidescroller that truly captures the fun and aesthetic of the original works if put in the right hands.
Microids' track record isn't all that great though so I wouldn't trust "them" to pull it off, as they're more into cash grabs than actual efforts to deliver something truly outstanding.
@RudyC3 Yeah, I'm also a bit worried about the upcoming Astérix & Obélix brawler. It'll be published by the same company.
Woo. Smurfsome.
Hope it turns out well.
Eh, it looks fine. Makes me wanna play Smurfs on PSone. Now THAT is an underrated gem.
@Gerald Same! Probably showing our age with that one.
Smurfs are communists!!!
The red one is the leader!!!
Yay, another 3D platformer games with Smurf characters. 😀
I wonder if this one will hit the States.
A longer trailer would be helpful, but I agree that it looks better than expected. I see shades of Yooka Laylee in it.
Looks right up my street from the teensy snippets in the trailer. Optimism engaged.
It looks like it's going to have better visuals and performance than the recent Ice Age Scratte game, which I guess is the last licensed game that was pretty decent that I noticed. Hope it's good.
Absolutely shocked this wasn't an Outright Games project. Actually might be worth keeping an eye on.
Gave me flashbacks to seeing the incredible (for the time) graphics for Smurf on the ColecoVision. That was a system seller back then. Game was pretty clunky, though. In that context this game looks completely incredible. But that is a context from 1982.
Morning cartoons were such a mixed bag of cheap animation and stories, but there was some comfort in the repetition. I remember chanting "is it much further, Papa Smurf?" on long car trips. "Not far now..." and then eventually...
The game play looks kind of decent, similar to Hat of Time.
Looks like my type of game, especially as they announce a physical straight away
Did these enemy creatures came from splatoon ?
@Spoony_Tech It looks decent b/c you expect it to look like total shovel ware Wii garbage but it looks like a PS2 game. Then it starts off looking like 2Dish Crash Bandicoot but then it seems a little more open world like Tak and the Power of Juju. All about expectations. Like I expected Yooka-Laylee to be good from the trailer but after the 2nd world the last 3 were simply not good.
I'll wait for reviews, and borrow it from the library, but that brief glimpse looked promising. I also like that the next Gen versions are 2022 so the devs aren't trying to do too much at once.
a perfect title to come with collectors edition shovel
Stiff lips, steady eyeballs and almost no eye blinking? Come on, put some emotion into the characters!
SGDQ 2022 Any% glitchful run awaits.
As someone who loves the Smurfs, genuinely looking forward to this one. Honestly, I think it looks great for a cartoon based platformer.
I did play the 3DS Smurfs game, and really liked how it was faithful to the comics. Loving how this looks like The Lost Village.
Doesn't look to terrible.
I used to love the Smurfs when I was little. But these days.. well.. I don't really care. Maybe if the game is good.
@Zeldafan79 Smurfs Nightmare on Gameboy Color was pretty decent.
Trailer looks alright. I loved the Smurfs growing up so I might give this a go even if mediocre.
@Zeldafan79 OH yes, Infogrames The Smurf from 1994 on Snes and Mega Drives is really good, Great looking and challeging.
The Gameboy and Game Gear version is also good with an amazing soundtrack.
The Smurfs Nightmare on GBC is even better one of the best plattformers of the system and again a great soundtrack.
I havent played a good smurf game after that...
@abdias Makes sense, people who believe in communism clearly live in fantasy land.
All good, but where's the black/purple Smurf survival game?
GNASH GNASH
@GustavoMaciel @Yosher Didn’t the 2600 game require you to press up to jump? It was difficult to control. I don’t think I got past the first screen. 😂
@Lordplops
"I just hope it's not Vile AF"?
@Tandy255 I honest to God do not remember. I played this game in the very early 90's when I was like 5 years old or so. But that probably was the case since I think it was like that on most if not all Atari games that had jumping. XD
@Mario500 It's an acronym, Google it.
Doesn't look bad, might be fun!
For the lack of 3D platformers out there, I will take it.
It looks better than expected, though, so at least there is that.
This is a must buy for me. I like cute 3D platformers with shiny graphics. I also loved the Smurfs as a kid. Were all of the Smurfs games for DS/Wii minigame collections, or were some of those 3D platformers as well? I'm curious now. It's a shame those live action movies were terrible because the CGI one they made after was also very nice looking.
Models and environments look good, but the characters need faces with some movement.
Do you guys think its funny were a game that should be bad, but it turns out great?
Could well be decent. 3D platformers are my jam, so I'm hoping this will be good.
@Lordplops
"It's an acronym, Google it."
(wishes to receive a meaning of the "acronym" from the author or creator of this message)
I love the classic Smurfs. Hope the game setting is solely in their world, the forests and castles, etc. No NYC please.
@Mario500 '(wishes to receive a meaning of the "acronym" from the author or creator of this message)'
And I wish people weren't so lazy, so i guess sometimes wishes don't come true.
@Lordplops
"And I wish people weren't so lazy, so i guess sometimes wishes don't come true."
(feels insulted by this message; prefers to receive meaning of the "acronym" mentioned by the author or creator of one of the messages to which I had responded here earlier rather than risk finding an incorrect meaning on my own)
@Peteykins It's a license title, license title doesn't stay at $60 for very long. Heck I don't think it'll be released at $60, it'll probably launch at $30 like Asterix and Obelix and hit the bargain bin after a year.
They seem pretty hopeful for this game to make a collectors edition with the soundtrack and everything, hope it’ll be a decent time at least
I love smurfs! But why is the trailer so short? We barely get to see what is the game like. I mean I get it's meant to be a teaser but I prefer to be teased with proper gameplay footage.
@Mario500 : [Removed: Offensive disambiguation of acronym]
The singing won't stop!!!!!
3d video game adaptations of 2d characters always seem to have lifeless eyes
Please stop comparing garbage games to top level Nintendo games. Only to give the game a 3 in your review. Game looks nothing like Sunshine.
Just because a game is licensed doesn’t make it trash but most of the time it is
I read somewhere that Smurf: Rescue in Gargamel's Castle for the Colecovision was the first platformer game. I played it when I was 12 or 13. It was impressive as there was nothing quite like it at the time. A glitch in the ColecoVision version allowed the player to see Smurfette without her dress on (not exactly).
Curious to see if this new game is any good.
So where are they selling this?
@YusseiWarrior3000 based on what?
@aaronsullivan
Smurfs on the Colecovision was truly awesome for the time. That and Jumpman Junior were my favorite platformer games until Super Mario Bros. came along (it SCROLLS!) 😱
Keep on Smurfin’!
